Eh. That's pretty much sums up my thoughts/experience. The location is awesome. Located right on Water St., near the Nats stadium, with floor to ceiling glass windows for a waterfront view. That's probably where my compliments end. We sat at a high table in the bar area. Now I know a lot of restaurants don't put forth tons of effort to get their flatware/glasses sparkling, however, everything shouldn't be COVERED in greasy fingerprints. Oh wait...there was another redeeming quality. Our server/bartender, Rafael, was really nice & engaging. Okay...back to the rest. The salsa was bland, every 4th tortilla chip was stale, the "crab" guacamole was flavorless with a dollop of canned crabmeat on top, the yucca fries were burnt and raw inside and the tacos were aesthetically pleasing but tasted mediocre at best. This was our dinner stop after the Nats game was postponed due to inclement weather (sigh). We had a group of 4. First impressions were not the greatest: we arrived before a huge crowd, but the hostess kept seating groups that came after us, and my coworker had to remind them we were still there. We chose to sit outside because the inside had about an hour wait. My coworker and I were really excited for the cucumber margarita, but were disappointed at the first sip. It was not very refreshing and was more bitter than we had expected. The chips were thick and crispy, and pretty good with the salsa which had a slight kick to it. I ordered the baja fish tacos which were okay. The taco didn't have much flavor, so I found myself slathering it with the salsa. All the entrees were a la carte, so I ordered yucca fries on the side, which were thick and satisfying. It was my first time trying yucca fries and they were like extremely dense potatoes. Fun :) The coworkers were satisfied with their salad, empanada, ceviche, and the huarache. The queso fundido we ordered to share came out very late, and we were too full to eat it by the time it came out. When we asked about it, the server told us that the queso takes awhile because it's frozen. Got suckered in because of the awesome happy hour they have. Upon arriving I had high hopes for this place- it was a nice day, location was right off the water, the navy yard area is well maintained. However, once I entered my expectations and experiences slowly started to decrease. The service and the attention of the hostess was troubling. As a first time visitor I was unsure of wether to just grab a table if I wanted to sit outside or if there would be servers. This was never answered because she was busy texting and answering phone calls so I just grabbed a seat at the bar. The bar staff pretty much mirrored my comments of the hostess. The bar was packed and there were not enough Bar tenders available to take drink and food orders and took awhile before finally getting my drink. By the way don't get the sangria- not refreshing at all. For a Mexican themed restaurant the Mexican food was not good. I did not particularly enjoy the sets of tacos and honestly I should have stopped there. The aspect that contributed most to my negative experience however is the cleanliness of this place. The bar was sticky, the floors were dirty and tables were not unkept or cleaned for several minuets after the patrons had finished eating. This is in addition for the numerous children that will run in bare foot soaking wet from the water park that is outside. All in all I had high hopes and was attracted because of the great drink prices but this is truly a case of " you get what you pay for. I was trying to think of the word to describe the food at Agua 301. Most of the ones I thought of had negative connotations. "adequate", "edible", "fine", "not horrible." But I actually like yelp's description of "a-ok". The food here will not offend anything. It's nothing memorable, butif you're looking for something that's got a lot of choices for a larger group, this would be your place. We went here on a Friday afternoon because we were looking for somewhere to sit outside where I could get melted cheese. They were very accommodating of our dog, which was appreciated. We started out with the guacamole and the queso fundido. I thought the guacamole was good, but then I like guac without much cilantro or strong flavors. The queso fundido was basically melted cheese, which was exactly what I was looking for. You can definitely taste the peppers, but caramelized onions were missing. For the main courses, we got the chicken milanese sandwich (without the bread), a chicken salad and two sides (yucca fries and mushrooms). The mushrooms were well prepared and seasoned. They were quite good. The yucca fries were very soft, which isn't common. They didn't give enough of the mayo-based sauce. I suppose I could have asked for more, so that's on me. They weren't super crispy, which was a downside. The chicken milanese was reviewed as fine, and the chicken salad seemed good, but it was a large portion. We enjoyed a wonderful brunch here before a noon Nats game on a HOT summer Saturday. After striking out (ha) at our first choice, we were so happy that Agua could accommodate us as walk-ins. We scored a table outside in the shade, and enjoyed the live music playing from a private event across the little pool. It was honestly such a pleasant experience, only elevated by the awesome meal we enjoyed. I highly recommend the guac appetizer and pork belly tacos. They have a bottomless brunch special for only $14 for mimosas and $17 for margs! We did not indulge since we were on more of a tight schedule for the game, but for $30 we got a generous pitcher of red wine sangria (enough for 3 people to have about 3 glasses comfortably -- a great option if you're not ready to get your drank on). Struggling with the star decision, as I'd say 2.5 is probably fair. I went 2 in hopes that someone actually cares enough to consider feedback and implement changes. The good: -The food. Chips & salsa were above average, crab guac was awesome, and we tried 4-5 types of tacos and very much liked them all. -The prices are quite reasonable. The bad: -They were out of any/all types of agua fresca. This is 1 of 2 categories of non-alcoholic beverages on the menu...so it was a lot to be out of. -The service was a strugglebus and a half! We were mistakenly brought 2 apps before the one we ordered, and then THREE rounds of dinners before the dinners we ordered arrived. Then there was 1 incorrect beer and a dessert. They didn't misunderstand our orders, the bus gentleman (he was at least 60) just had no idea which order went to which table. This overall gives the sense that the restaurant maybe just opened? (Nope.) That it's extremely disorganized/unprofessional, etc. Each time we sent food back he took it back inside and it was brought back out to a table near ours soon after. I can't imagine those tables were very happy about the situation either. We also had to flag someone down to ask for silverware and napkins 1/2 way through dinner, the table they directed us to was not wiped & set prior to our arrival. -Deal breaker: I went into both restrooms at the end of the meal. Why? Because I walked into the first, was completely disgusted, and hopped over to the second (they are unisex). Neither toilet was flushed and there was paper all over. Worst part is that they were completely OUT OF SOAP! I'm going to go out on a limb and say there aren't additional separate bathrooms for staff...which means...ew!!! We ate outside and my bathroom run at the end of the meal was my first view into the restaurant...and it was gross. As other reviews noted, the floors are dirty, wet/slippery in spots, etc. To me this is both very important and very basic. YUM! Went here with a few friends before a Nats game. There were plenty of options for the vegetarian in our group as well as wheat-free options for me. We shared the queso, which was different than we expected but very good, along with two pitchers of margaritas. They were strong and just what we were looking for. Everyone enjoyed what they ordered and Lincoln (like the President) was the bomb. He was very helpful and laughed along with us. As a member of the industry I'm rather tolerant when it comes to slow service and mistakes. However, this was probably one of the worst experiences I've ever had at a restaurant. First, I made a reservation through Yelp which needless to say the restaurant couldn't find even after I showed them my confirmation email and text. The host or manager was rude and short and was unaccommodating to our request to sit on the patio even though there were open tables that simply needed to be cleaned. Eventually we were told to sit at the open table outside. However we were not escorted to our table not brought menus until we requested them after 10 minutes. Our server only greeted us after we requested menus and then promised a bunch of things like silverware and such that never came until after our appetizers arrived. They forgot my boyfriends order and never answered his questions about items being vegetarian. The drinks and service were extremely slow and the staff was inattentive. The food was mediocre at best. It's unfortunate, I live just blocks away and will never return. We're always looking for new things close to home but this place isn't worth the 1 star I gave it. I gave it two stars instead of one because the service was great, and the location if pretty fly. I don't have much to say about it other than that it just wasn't for me. The tacos were not tasty. Staff is too inept to warrant another visit, and their reviews show. At the time of this writing, about 65% of the reviews are 3 stars or below, with a whopping 37% 2 stars or below. After being seated, we were rudely treated by a hostess by the name of Alexis who demanded we go back outside to wait. I understand if there was some confusion about seating, but that's no reason to take it out on innocent customers. It's not like we handled the seating charts. As we were exiting she makes a rude gesture behind my wife's back. I've worked in the service industry before, so I was willing to overlook the seating mix-up, but you can't insult my wife and not expect a complaint. Sadly, when I asked for her manager, a man by the name of Jonathan came out and he looked like a deer in headlights. Perhaps he didn't have enough training, but he didn't even have the sense to offer an apology. All he could do was stammer, "Umm...here's my boss's card, you can email him for compensation." Compensation? What? How about just saying you're sorry, apologizing for the rude staff, and saying the problem will be addressed? This is simple customer service, not a lawsuit. So, I didn't get to try the food, but judging by over half the other reviews here, it's not that good. read more

Okay. I really like the food here. Sat at the bar before the Nats game. The happy hour specials are really good. The service left much to be desired. Zero personality from the 2 bar tenders. No warm welcome, just nothing. Straight face, barely any recognition you are there. We essentially had to flag them down and yell our order over the noise once we made eye contact. I had the chicken empanadas and the hongos tacos. Both were very tasty and well prepared with some garnish and sauce. I'd eat those both again. A gentleman beside me had the beef tacos, with which he wasn't too impressed. He also bought me a drink which will come into play later. Most everyone there had the peach frozen sangria. This is not your abuela's sangria. You'll feel a little buzz off of one glass. But who drinks one sangria? I do! When the bill came my bill had my two appetizers and 3, count'em 3, sangrias on it. I said "sir, es incorrecto. I had 2 appetizers and 1 drink which he paid for (gesturing to the gentleman beside me." (He insisted on paying for it) ANYWHO, my bar tender brought back the bill with my two appetizers and 1 sangria. I again told him it wasn't correct and he snatched and crumbled the piece of paper and told his bar mate to deal with it. She brought the gentleman next to me his bill with 1 additional drink on it that he didn't order or drink. He started to fight it and then thought it wasn't worth it. She never brought my bill so I ask my bar tender for it. He asked his bar mate why she didn't give it to me, they did a little back and forth, and then I got my bill, paid, and left. I still left an extremely undeserved tip. I wonder how many times they get people to pay for extra drinks at this place...... read more

The drinks and food here are top notch. Outstanding margaritas, good tequila selection, and great tacos. Everyone was happy with the fare. Prices are not bad either. Atmosphere is solid - even when crowded, my party could all hear each other, which was nice. And the view of Yards Park can't be beat. Service, on the other hand, was pretty bad for our large party of 10. Now, I've been here before and their bartenders are pretty good. And the hosting staff is excellent - they handled a my special requests (we brought a cake for the birthday girl, and we also wanted checks divyed up a particular way) easily. But our waiter was not the brightest crayon in the box. And had a serious attitude issue. He couldn't understand and execute simple requests (can you bring three salted and three unsalted glasses with the pitcher of margaritas? *confused look, rude remark* ok then....) some of our party members were allergic to mushrooms. One asked him about some of the dishes and what he should do. Waiter's answer? Don't order anything with mushrooms in it. I know they are supposed to have capacity for large groups - there is a room in the back for them. But I'm not sure I'd come here again with a party. For me and up to 4 people? Definitely. read more

I wish there was a rating between "I've experienced better" and "A-ok" because I feel like 2 starts is too harsh, but three too many. I work in the area and will return. I suspect that they rushed the opening without much training for the front of the house or the kitchen. On to the review. Decor- Ok I guess, the concrete floor and the bar are the winners here. Surprised a bit by how small the place was and by how average the tables and chairs were. Service- Also just ok. Server left the extra silverware (2 eating 4 sets), failed to light our candle, and left our second drink order sitting at the bar for at least 10 minutes. Table was visited twice by what I assume to be where two different managers. The first took our drink order (same one that sat at the bar) and never came around again, and the second asked how everything was. I mentioned the guac was bland and needed something. He said he'd taste it and see.....never came back...odd. Food- Hit and miss. We started with the guac of the day, which had bacon and cheese. Even with the bacon and cheese it was bland. I looked at my brother and said, this is missing something flavor. Seriously though needed something acidity, some salt, heat, probably all of the above. Probably should up the price a bit and do the table side preparations that every other medium to high end place in town does. We also had the Queso Fundido (add chorizo for $1). This was pretty, came out in a cast iron skillet type thing, piping hot, pretty dark brown crusty spots on the cheese. Served with tortillas (think palm of your hand sized ones). Solid dish. We split three orders of tacos; Beef Barbacoa, Baja Fish, and Pork Belly al Pastor. I would eat all three again, and will likely try the other tacos on the menu. Each order comes with two tacos and they are well stuffed with meat and various accoutrement's. Barbacoa- a nice chili gravy that the meat had been sitting in for awhile made it enjoyable, Pork Belly al Pastor- crispy and tasty. This one comes with a pineapple habenaro salsa that isn't dumb hot and has a nice pineapple and mango taste. Baja Fish- light airy fish with a really nice chipotle crema on top. They all come with some kind of additional sauce or salsa, as well as each order comes with a roasted serrano pepper (do yourself a favor and eat this). Food was ok, and I suspect it will get better. Location is great but our food was average and service was sub-par. Our waiter was not very helpful in answering questions about the menu, for example - how is the kimchi, is it made fresh? I had the queso dip, chilaquiles entree and a michelada. Everything was bad. The dip was really oily and rubbery. The chilaquiles were basically a nacho dish with an omellete on top. Old review: 4.0 stars. New review: 4.5 .I'm updating my review having been here a few times since my first dinner on opening day. I've been twice for dinner since then and twice for brunch. Both times the place was buzzing for dinner, and quiet for brunch (which was nice because we were very well attended to). PROS ----- +They fixed the salsa. The one at brunch seemed less sour than the one I had for dinner the night before, but it was still great with a nice hotness. The one at dinner the night before was even better because it was pretty sour, and I love my salsa sour. +Good value, especially if you do brunch. +The braised short rib was awesome. Tender, and full of flavor. As well as the pork belly entree. +The kimchi steak tacos and the pork belly tacos are my favorite. +Reasonable prices on some of the tequila +Awesome ambiance and layout. Great views of the park and bridge. +My friends LOVED their Pozole (Poloze?) Verde and chorizo/egg/sirloin burger with yucca fries for brunch. All at a reasonable price. CONS --- -One time out of four I came here the chips seemed stale. The next morning they were perfect, though. -I sat a table at the full service bar, and I wasn't attended as often as I'd like. But it's not a huge deal because service has been great every time I've managed to get a proper table -Still wish the entrees gave you a bit more meat. I should try to the Adobo chicken again to see if it's any better, but there's so much I like on the menu I kind of don't want to risk it if I'm spending the money. I'm giving it 5 stars, but you have to understand I'm factoring in price. In terms of pure quality of food in the neighborhood, you can't beat Osteria Morini. But that place will cost you an arm and a leg. I feel Yelp star ratings should factor in the quality of the food for the price. We had brunch here during the middle of Tour de Fat and the outdoor seating for this restaurant is sublime. The prices are very reasonable ($11 for tacos) and the portion was surprising filing. I got the carne asada con kimchi and it was delicious although I couldn't really taste any kimchi. The baja tacos were also a hit among our group and the salsa and guacamole with lump crab was also very good. I also really appreciated that they allowed us to bring in beers that we had already purchased from the festival (for charity) without making a fuss. Overall, I think the food, price, and outdoor patio warrants this place high on my list. The service is a little slow but considering that they are a new establishment and they are super friendly more than made up for it. read more

Another one of the good new additions to the neighborhood that could be great with a few adjustments. First things first: the margaritas are great. If you like tart margs made with real lime you will not be disappointed here. Guacamole is also pretty good, but rarely do you need it with the chips and salsa coming. Chips are good, but can be quite salty. I've had the fish tacos twice and both times have been impressed with the generous portion and how well the fish was cooked. Aside from the salty chips, the main knock on this place is the service. I had hoped this would even out a bit after the place had been open for a while, but it's still not great. Timing of drinks/chips etc can be off. We also had a waitress that disappeared for about 10 or 20 minutes when we were finished with our meal. Also, this is not factored into my star rating because I don't think it's fair to knock somebody for something that's not part of what they are trying to do (looking at you reviewers who complaint about the wine list at a beer bar) but I do wish that they would have a few of the tex/mex standbys like enchiladas, etc. if only because there are so few places in DC that do them well and I would love to try a more "elevated" take from Agua. I hope they can sew up these loose ends soon, i cant wait for spring and the chance to sip a margarita on the patio by the river. read more

I was reluctant to try Agua 301 due to its poor reviews. However, I was planning brunch with a vegan friend and they had something that she could order. So, we gave it a try. I ordered chilliquiles, which I'd been craving for months. They were delicious. We also partook in the bottomless mimosas. As the day wore on they became almost pure champagne. We didn't complain. Although the service was slow at times, our glasses were rarely empty over the 2.5 hours that we sat on the patio, which more than made up for it. I've fallen off my brunch game as I've gotten older. However, I will definitely be back to Agua 301 the next time I need bottomless beverages in my life. read more

Came here before a Sunday afternoon Nationals game for brunch. Got the agave pancakes which were decent and bottomless sangria. The chips and salsa we're just mediocre. If it weren't for the service I'd only give the place 2 stars. The waitress was great and charged our phones so we had enough charge during the game. With the bottomless drinks and being away from our phones, the time went by fast and we were late for the game. There is also plentiful outdoor seating, but it was too hot that day. She looked confused when we asked about it, and then said it would be "right out." 10 minutes later, nothing. We finally canceled it. Because our food took so long, we missed the first inning of the Nats game. Not cool. A mid-week lunch shouldn't take 2 hours. The food we did get was mediocre at best. The tuna tacos were overcooked and basically ruined. The corn tortillas with the tacos were tasteless and soggy; all the toppings fell out. The salsa was eh. Dined Sunday, May 17, 2015 Great location for sitting out on the patio. Aqua is adjacent to Yards Park, on the Potomac River, and next to the wading pool. The interior is boring. Met up with some girlfriends and we had a great time, and we ate a lot. Complimentary chips and sauce - pass on this, save room for tastier options because the chips are not that good and the sauce is odd tasting. Traditional guacamole - We ordered this because the chips needed a better dip. The guac is just okay. I would not order it again. Mexican Corn Pancake, Chihuahua cheese, creamy butter - This was tasty, it is sweet though. Sesame crusted Ahi tuna, arbol chile, red pepper sauce, pineapple arugula salad - The best thing we ate. We ordered one it was so good that we ordered another. The tuna was good but not the best I've ever had. The pineapple and arugula salad (I think on this day we had mango) was VERY good. I would like to order this salad again as a stand alone item. Agua Fresca hibiscus flavor - Yes, order this. I like it because it is not sweet but highly flavorful. I drank two. This was my first visit to Agua 301. I will definitely return because the patio atmosphere had a great vibe and the staff--manager, hosts, table servers, waitstaff are all so friendly, accommodating and attentive! We had Alethia for our waitress and she is beyond wonderful. She took care of us as if we were special guests in her home. She made dining at Agua 301 a 5 star experience. When all others fail Agua comes through!! Agua is the place to be for business oriented mature men and women. The happy hour is on point and the menu is popping. Speed: 5, typical drinks reach patrons within reasonable time frames 3-6 minutes, bar, 5-9 minutes seated in the restaurant. Availability: 5, Agua is always open, crowded at times (happy hour, Nat's games), but you can usually get in and be served within reason. Their brunch is well worth the visit, try it sometime. Staff: 5, The staff is always professional, always looking to serve the customer. Venue: 4, Tgis rates a 4 for me only cause the bar area is usually very crowded due to the seating around the bar, not at the bar. Parking: 3, parking in D.C. Is terrible to begin with, fortunately Agua is located some 3 blocks away from the metro. Overall 5, you can eat, drink, join a conversation without feeling left out, Agua 301 is the happy hour king! read more

I came here with my friend for national taco day and words can't describe how gross the food in this place is. after being seated by the host, the manager screamed at him in front of us and other patrons and basically told him to move us from the table. it was incredibly rude to both us and the host. that was bad but the food was worse. we ordered their fish taco and chicken tinga taco and the guac. first they brought out the chips and salsa which is always nice. the chips were good, no complaints there. the salsa was a little strange but also fine (but definitely not great). then they brought out our guac. first off it looked that weird grey green of old guac. still we decided to try it and it tasted old, flavorless, and NOT DELICIOUS. so we ate a little and decided to see if maybe it would taste better with our tacos (yes a flaw in logic but desperation). then our tacos came. my friend was pumped, took pics for her snapchat, took two bites of each taco and just gave up. the fish tasted old and fishy. the tortilla was subpar and the toppings were meh. overall a very dissapoinitng experience. do not come here if you're looking for good food. terrible excuse for food. read more

Lets just say that maybe I came on a bad day.....Went for a team lunch during the holidays and the food was......just A-OK.....I figured that if I ordered something that no one could mess up then I was sure to get a hit.....Tried the Steak Quesadilla (pretty simple) and lets just say that there was something funny about the way the cheese tasted.....weird right? don't get me wrong, it was indeed edible but others in my party sent the item back into the kitchen after one bite. Horrible service, waiter had an attitude when we pointed out that they brought us the wrong drinks. Table was dirty when they seated us and we had to ask them to clean it. Waited at least 30 minutes between each time the waiter came. Food isn't great either. You're paying premium prices for horrible service and below average quality of food. read more

I came here for lunch with co-workers. The food was delicious presentation was pretty good. This was my 1st time eating here and I've heard nothing but positive things about it. Some info: The staff is helpful when you don't know what to choose. The food is tasty and satisfying. The price is fair, but there are great values on certain items. The place is has a slight upscale feel. Bar area looked on the smaller side. If you came here on a ball game night, I doubt you will find a seat. I can't really recommend one item, so try them all. I had the Chicken Tortilla Soup, along with the free chips and dip they brought out. The guacamole was insanely good a must order. read more

I made my fifth visit to Agua 301 today, third time for brunch. Everything about our experience was mediocre to poor. While other visits were slightly better, this time the restaurant was nearly empty, further reducing reasons for trouble. We were there with my 2 year old son, and apparently they didn't have high chairs as we were given a plastic booster seat to use on a slippery outdoor chair, which top 10 minute to arrive. They brought a kids water, which was nice but filled it so full the top didn't worked and kiddo got soaked. The coffee came out without any real sugar, followed by meals that were totally covered in low-quality salsa from a jar. Like a half inch deep layer. This is a Mexican restaurant, right? You make your own salsa to go with chips and then use nasty Costco quality preserved salsa on your food? Huh? Coffee refills weren't brought so we asked and the waiter took our cups away (?) returning them to the wrong people. Service was slow and disjointed, with a bus boy so seemed so stoned, it took him three tries to pick our three plates up. With such a great location it's a shame management is clearly putting zero effort into training wait or kitchen staff to think critically and provide quality service. I'll plan to spend future weekends at Morini, which has their act together. read more

Bottomless sangria was nasty Bottomless mimosa was JUST ok and yet was the best thing on the menu Brunch menu was terrible and you HAVE to order an entree from it just to get the bottomless drinks The person I came with had the pork belly taco... which literally was cubes of beef. And overlooked. She didn't even eat 1/2 of the first one. Our server was inattentive and rarely checked on us. Overall, if I could give this place "0" stars, I would. Located near the nationals stadium in DC, Agua301 has been one of my favorite brunch places to go all of last summer. Yesterday was no exception. The bottomless drinks are very tasty and at a good price!! I usually get the steak and eggs every time. Steak is always cooked at the desirable temperature. The service never disappoints. Our server yesterday was Marlon. He was very attentive to our table. We never had to ask for refills on the non alcoholic beverages as he always made sure our cups were filled. Summer is upon us and I will be visiting Agua301 a lot and will be requesting Marlon. read more
