We had an excellent meal at Ahan Lao. We ordered the deep fried pork belly, yellow curry, pad see ew, papaya salad, and beef jerky, and every single dish was incredibly tasty and well-seasoned. The portions were very generous, and everything tasted fresh and made with care. Parking was also very easy, with a free parking lot available, which is a big plus. This is truly a small business worth supporting, the owner is also the chef, and even though she speaks only a little English, she is the sweetest and most welcoming person. Highly recommend if you're looking for authentic, comforting food and a warm, genuine experience.

This is a small place it only has 4 tables inside. My pineapple fried rice with shrimp was okay the pineapple or raisins were not sweet but the rice and shrimp were good. The boy loved his chicken satay sticks we ordered a side of jasmine rice for him to go with his chicken. If you spend 40 dollars or more you get a free Thai iced tea. It was watered down but that's okay, it was free. We also ordered the lemon grass chicken that was good. This was one of those stops from rosarito to home better than a fast food joint.

Absolutely loved this place. When you're served with a paper plate, you know the food is going to hit. Our favorites were the fried pork belly, pad thai, Lao papaya salad and spicy eggplant. I don't have a bad thing to say about anything that we tried.

Really small and cute restaurant with 4 tables. The restaurant is run by an older Lao couple who are very sweet and friendly. The Lao Beef Pho was very flavorful and unlike Vietnamese pho. It has a deeper beef and spice flavor compared to Vietnamese pho. The khao piek is light and warm, a great soup after a long cold day. This is the only dish though that was a little light on the noodles. Me and a friend ordered one each, and neither of us left completely full. We were just barely satisfied. So if I could give one feedback, I would kindly ask that they add a little more noodles to this dish. Since I was still a little hungry, I ordered a chicken pad thai--this I would recommend. Very generous portion and very flavorful. This I would definitely get again. Also, if you spend $50, you get one free drink (soda, thai tea, or coffee).

Be warned. The prices listed here is not updated. I just came here to try out this Lao Thai food and the first things the chef/owner told me was "What do you want?" I didn't know if I'm gonna laugh or get mad. Anyway I ordered the "beef pho" and thought it was nothing special like some people post here. Veggies were just 2 stalks of basil and some sprout heads. For protein they use some beef meat which is tender and some beef balls and that Lao sausage which has some sour after taste. This pho is 3/5 at its best. I prefer the traditional viet pho. I ordered fried pork belly which again is 3/5 at best. The dipping sauce was the best part of this dish. But the pork doesn't taste marinaded at all and the skin is chewy like rubber. I can cook better than this. I ordered jasmine rice and the rice they served is not jasmine at all. Overall I paid 30$ when I think I would have a better time at a Chinese buffet. Best of luck to this family business. 3/5

Small place with big flavor. My friends and I tried various items and all were equally as delicious. Portions are generous so it was easy to share. Especially loved the Tom kah soup and spicy eggplant stir fry. Service was great too.

The food was SUPER good! The only thing is that the shop is pretty small so if you dine in, you might have to wait. Also the service is pretty laid back but it's good. Also the portions are a little small.

The food was overall ok. They did not have condiments out to add to the kao piek. Not having condiments out for the kao piek was a little disappointing. Also not enough spice, I asked for Medium spice but I think they thought I wanted mild. Overall service was nice. The flavors weren't there.

I LOVE THIS PLACE!!! wanted to eat some pad thai but my normal place was closed, and might I say that if this place wasn't so far i would cheat on my og pad thai place EVERYDAY. i ordered pad thai, pork belly and some sort of salad dish and good god and all the highest heavens, i was in bliss. flavorful, good portion, JESUS CHRIST!!! can i add that the guy up front was super nice on the phone and gave me a free thai tea? LIKE LITT!!! also the restaurant itself is so cutesy it felt so cozy authentic. tbh just stop reading and go, this place is GOOD AF if yall told me that this place had 5 michelin stars i would not doubt it for a SECOND

The food here is a MUST! Been going here for a few years now and the service and quality never disappoint! There is seating but I usually take mine to go. There is plenty of free parking as they have their own lot. The service is quick and I usually place my order on the phone. The atmosphere is clean and simple.

Laotian cuisine is quite rare to come across in San Diego. My boyfriend who is Laotian himself and I was excited to try this place and have had our eye on this place for a while but we don't live anywhere near Chula. That day we happened to be nearby and decided it was time to try this place. We weren't super hungry so we decided to get a cucumber salad and beef larb to-go. The shop itself is super small, there were only about 3 tables inside. The man helping us was also super nice and the pick up process went smoothly. We were a bit disappointed when we came home because the beef larb that we ordered wasn't the minced beef like we were expecting and was super watery. Unfortunately, I ended up finding a fly in the beef larb when I already was halfway done eating it. We threw both dishes away. So so sad because we were really looking forward to it but our first experience just left our stomachs churning. I'm glad to say we tried it but I don't think we would come all the way down here again.

At long last I decided to order a platter for a family dinner. The platter presentation was nice with plenty of rolls (7 I believe). It's a good value for the quality and quantity. Big patio dining area and just a chill vibe inside. The front of house employees were friendly and very helpful. My transaction was quick and easy. I arrived as a party of one and was told I could not be seated at a table, despite multiple tables visibly open. Not reserved, just unavailable to seat me specifically. The explanation given was that they were "saving tables for larger parties." I understand managing seating during busy hours, but in this case the dining room was not full, and there was clearly space available. I requested to sit outside. I was offered a seat at the bar instead. I explained that I have sensory sensitivities and cannot comfortably sit at the bar--especially in an environment with loud music and a DJ actively playing. That context didn't seem to be meaningfully considered. What stood out most was the prioritization of keeping tables empty over seating a willing, paying guest. I was ready to order and spend a full meal's worth, but the preference appeared to be theoretical larger parties that had not yet arrived over an actual customer in front of them. Overall, it felt like a missed opportunity in hospitality and guest care. I left feeling unwelcome as a solo diner, which is disappointing given how common and legitimate solo dining is. I won't be returning.

First off, there is free parking available, just circle around the building until you see a garage entrance for retail parking. Two hours for free! Let me first explain the aesthetics of this place. Clean and modern with mid century feel accented with greenery throughout. Please note that they won't seat you until most of your party is present. We came here for Happy Hour which was from 4-6pm from Tuesday to Sunday! This is fantastic that HH includes the weekend!!!! To start, got a wellness shot which had a meld of juices and ginger. A great drink to ready your palate. For cocktails, I tried the Suika Spritz, which was refreshing! The Absolutely Pho-nomenal definitely tasted like cold Pho broth but spiked. It wasn't my favorite drink, but glad I tried it nonetheless. Of course we ordered the $1 oysters, and ordered all three - Baja, Pacific Northwest, & East Coast. It came with some Asian fusion sauces to dress our oysters. My fave was the Baja as these were the freshest! All three were smooth and non briny. On the HH menu we also tried - Bulgogi Birria Vampiro - Tender meat with bulgogi seasoned beef on top of a tostada. Really liked the meld of the two cultures in this dish. Duck Liver Mousse - Comes with rustic bread & crème fraiche. Very duck forward. I liked this because it was rich with flavor. Stone Crab Taco - Loved the nod to Loganisa in this taco! This was by far, my favorite protein dish on the HH menu!!!! Regular Menu - Mango Nasturium Kimchi Salad - I absolutely loved this vibrant and fresh dish!!!! I had to go back for second and thirds! Shishito Peppers with Bonito Flakes - This was definitely a fun and flavorful dish with lots of umami. Dessert - Hotteok and Vanilla Ice Cream - this was my favorite dessert! The pancakes were flaky and delicious!! Bonbunja Tiramisu - Beware! This has a strong coffee taste. It reminded of the strength and flavor profile of a Vietnamese coffee. I can't believe it's not cheesecake - Definitely a mix of a brûlée but with a cheesecake flavor. Confusing but works lol. We met the executive chef, Kyler, who explained and served some of dishes we ordered. The entire staff was so accommodating and even reminded us if we needed our parking validated! Our water never ran empty and our dishes were promptly taken away as we finished. Definitely a place to visit during HH since they offer amazing food and cocktail choices.

My wife and I went here for dinner expecting to eat great food based on all the high reviews and…read morethe upscale price, but we were instead left with disappointment and a big fat check with an unexpected automatic 20% gratuity fee for 2 people. Food: We got several appetizers and 3 entrees. We had the Mango Kimchi Salad, Bulgogi Birria Vampiro, Silkworm Pupa Tacos, Doenjang Risotto, Miso Lingcod, and Braised Short Rib. We got plenty of dishes to try, but unfortunately they were either simply mediocre or had an issue. The Kimchi Salad was too strong in spice and the mangos were unripe and hard. The Birria Vampiro was simply mediocre and sort of bland. Silkworm Pupa Tacos were again sort of bland. The Risotto was undercooked and crunchy instead of 'al dente'. Miso Lingcod had a very fishy taste and not much else. And the Braised Short Rib was too salty. Drinks: I got the Choi's cocktail and my wife got the Gangnam Style espresso martini. Both drinks were very well made and tasted great! Service: Unlike the food, the service was great! From the person who confirmed our reservation, to the staff at the front of the door, and to our server, they were all extremely friendly. We were celebrating an occasion, which we made known when booking and upon sitting down we got a handwritten card with a congratulations note. That was very unexpected and awesome! We also got a couple of complimentary cocktail shots from the bartender while we were there. Overall, I would say the staff and service was extremely good. Parking: The area of San Diego that Choi's is located is unfortunately very bad. Overfilled with homeless, drug addicts, and just plain shady looking people who roam the streets. I was overjoyed when I found out that they give you two hours of complimentary parking in a safe place! So to summarize: The staff that provide great service, the bartender with awesome drinks, and the free parking in a safe place simply do not make up for the main reason we were there: the food. The only reason I gave this place 2 stars instead of 1 was because of all these other factors besides the food. Before paying the bill and leaving, we did let the server know about the issues we found with the food in a very friendly and constructive way. She was thankful for the honesty and the feedback.
