I was so excited to try this place by reading the reviews and they did not disappoint! They are authentic Lao food at its finest. We were staying at a hotel right next door, so it was super convenient. We ordered a whole spread -- I mean it was enough for a party of 20 and we only had 4 adults and 3 kids. It was to go, but the service was great and it was so easy to order online and the food was ready as promised. They even gave us a nice tray since we ordered past a certain amount. Some of the reviews mentioned the male worker was rude, which I agree. The woman worker was nice. I ordered pad see ew with chicken Pad Thai with chicken Cream cheese wontons Banana matcha When I got it the pad Thai was missing, I checked the receipt and he didn't add it there but I was too tired to wait again so I left. When I got home, I noticed the pad see ew had 2 pieces of chicken in it, the wontons were flat with a pea size amount of cream cheese, and the matcha was not great for $10. This place is located in a small strip mall across from Auto Zone. This place appears to be a fusion of regional foods that may be beyond my understanding. There are some pictures of Laos inside so maybe there is some influence from that region. I usually always order Pad Thai when we go to a Thai restaurant. This time, having recently discovered Drunken Noodles at another restaurant , I decided to give them another try here. Well, I learned that drunken noodles do not have a uniform recipe. I ordered mine with chicken. While you might expect that noodles would be the primary ingredient, not here. These seemed to be equal parts noodles, chicken and vegetables. The seasoning was very very good. I asked for mild heat, and I'm pretty tolerant of spicy foods and mild had no kick at all for me. It didn't matter, the taste was amazing. My wife had the Pad Thai, and I regret I didn't order it. Not because my food wasn't good, but only because the Pad Thai was simply amazing, which is why it's my usual order when we have Thai food. The place was run by a couple who appeared to be the owners. He took our order and she cooked. The food arrived very hot. I mean like right out of the grill. So, be careful. Before our main dish we had some Thai Ice Tea (very sweet) and some spring rolls that were very large and very good. As we left the woman came to say thank you and wish us well, and said "see you next time." And she's right. We'll be back. Give this place a chance. You won't regret it. read more

Ahan Lao is a quaint family-friendly restaurant with fantastic food and exceptional service! The friendly staff at this hidden gem will make you feel right at home, and the prices are incredibly reasonable. My personal favorites include the Pad Ka Pao with medium spice (although if you're not used to Asian spice, go for a level lower), and the Mok Pla - both of which are very delicious. The Papaya Salad was really good too. And of course, you can't leave without trying their mango sticky rice. I must admit, I'm hesitant to write this review as I'd like to keep this place all to myself, but it would be a disservice to them and their amazing food not to share it with others. Was craving Pad Thai noodles and decided to try this place out. It's located off Broadway and E St in Chula Vista. We arrived midday on a Saturday afternoon and only one other couple was eating inside. It was quiet except for the sounds of the cooking. The service was very friendly and welcoming. I also ordered the Drunken Noodles along with the Pad Thai noodles to go. We could've ate there but want to relax at home. The food was ready in less than ten minutes since it wasn't too busy. Overall, I did enjoy the food especially the Drunken Noodles 4 of 5, but thought the Pad Thai 2.5 of 5 was just ok and had better elsewhere. I definitely return just to try other options. read more

For all my khon Lao, this place is a nice spot for some good authentic Lao and Thai food. My boyfriend and I came here three separate occasions during two weeks. We tried the lao sausage with a side of sticky rice, Nam Khao, Chicken Satay, Chicken Larb, and Khao piak sen and yellow curry! All were delicious! I do recommend having a condiment tray for seasoning for the soup, more lime more serving of fish sauce, hoisin sauce, and chili oil. Thai tea was delicious and ended it with mango sticky rice desert! We will definitely be coming back for more! I want to take my lao mother here. Mok Pla- fish steamed in a banana leaf with fennel- it tastes as delicious as it looks- warm still by the time I got home, tender chunks of fish with flavor soaked through and through! Solid eats here at Ahan Lao. We usually get our Thai cravings filled at the Thai Joint, Mekong, and Bamboo Garden. When we found out about Ahan Lao and that it was kinda close by we happily gave it a try. Lao sausage-good flavor just a little on the dry side on texture. Needed to keep using their Lao salsa (pretty hot!). Tom yum-I normally don't order Tom Yum but I was feeling a little sniffly so sure. Great broth. When I'm sipping down the last drops from the bowl that's a great sign. However, the chef needs to work on knife cuts. Kinda on the chunky side there in the veggies. Like shouldn't stuff fit in the soup spoon? Did I really just use a knife and fork while eating soup? Noodles-pad Thai and pad see ew are usual orders. Good flavor profiles but again in the knife cuts especially the Chinese broccoli for the pad see ew. We ordered both with fried tofu. Crispy pork belly- Real winner here. Crisp and juicy at the same time. Fist bump. Did takeout so can't comment on service. The place is in an area that was a little sketchy at night. They are super busy and close around 8pm, which is my only complaint because I've wanted to place an order through Ubereats and they are closed. They are located off of Broadway, which is a busy shopping center/location with limited parking but people seem to be in and out. Dinning inside and outside is available and they have rearranged the inside a bit. Ordered some noodles and curry and the curry is always enough for 2 meals for me or enough for a meal for 2. I love the flavor so much, I could just drink it like water! I mean its Spicer (mine is) than water but you will see... order the yellow curry about a medium spice and you will not be disappointed! this is my first time eating Laotian food (so I might not have the best judgment metrics!!) but I think the food was overall pretty good. I got the Pad Kee Mao (which is actually Thai?? to my knowledge) and Khao Poon Lao Curry Noodle. Pad Kee Mao thoughts: it was alright...this is something I've had before. I think I've had better experiences at other restaurants/making it at home with regard to taste and texture. the noodle was a bit too much on the chewy side and there wasn't nearly enough chicken. the spice was decent. I'm usually not a big fan of Super Spicy Foods but I decided to be extra today and I ordered it Extra Spicy. to my surprise, it wasn't as hot as I was expecting it to be. it felt a bit more mild. so if you're a chili person, I'd recommend asking for additional spices on the side (like powdered chili or a chili oil). overall, I'd rate this dish a 4/10. I'll be honest and say I don't think I'll order it from here again. Khao Poon Lao Curry Noodle thoughts: this was really tasty! I've never had anything like this before so it was a lot of fun to try. the broth was so silky and light and it paired beautifully with the bean sprouts and cabbage. I also loved the vermicelli noodles in the soup! they soaked up a bit of the broth so it was such a nice taste with every bite I took. my only complaint for this dish was that it was a bit lukewarm. I think it would have been more enjoyable if it was hotter (but I'm actually unsure of whether this dish is supposed to be a bit cooler). I rate this a 8/10. I'll definitely try this again! service was good! they greeted us and handed us mini water bottles, which was cute. they were pretty attentive as well. as for ambience: also nice. very clean and sort of serene atmosphere. there are candles on the tables with a nice scent.
