I noticed Dr. Derek Tom was listed as "Honolulu's Best Doctors 2026: Pediatric Dentistry", so I thought it was a good time for a review. I was recommended to him by my Cousin and all 3 of her children is a Patient here. My Son has been established since he was 2.5 years old. I highly recommend Aiea Pediatric Dental Center - easy to find located right across Pearlridge Shopping Center, with good parking stalls. Dr. Tom and his entire staff are amazing. They're so welcoming with us. I trust the work they do completely as they are meticulous and very efficient. Doctor and his hygienist are knowledgeable, takes the care to answer all my questions, and seems to enjoy their job and I love that. His office staff is accommodating and attentive. They return my call when I leave a Voicemail and Patient with rescheduling. They're super helpful, friendly, and very good at responding. The office space is very new, clean, and spacious. It's overall the best place I've found for my only child and I plan to stay with Dr. Tom until my son outgrows his office. read more

After the pandemic lockdowns, we made an appointment only to be told we had been removed from his patient list. I asked why and was told because we missed too many appointments. I was in disbelief. We were always treated well by the receptionist too, but she was really dicey on the phone and it left wondering what the heck did I do to offend this lady. Like we know each other ma'am, what is going on??? I checked my phone to be sure maybe she was right and I had somehow forgotten appointments even though I'm uptight about keeping those, and I was right. We have never missed an appointment as "no shows" and had only ONE appointment we called in days in advance to excuse them from because they had coughs and hello, it was Covid time and I'm sure they and other patients would have appreciated me keeping my kids' germs away from the clinic. I called back and told her we never were no shows and we only had one missed appointment which was excused but she was adamant that my kids were no longer his patients. I didn't give no attitude or tone or anything, It blew my mind at the time and I was left feeling flabbergasted at the weird treatment towards us. I've since gotten another dentist for my kids, but this experience was wild. In hindsight I feel like they low key did that because maybe they wanted clients that were coming in more often for work and they can get more money vs me just bringing my kids in now for cleanings after all their work was done. Who knows.. just make sure you keep track and keep the receipts of your cancellations. read more

At this office, the assistants were very helpful. However, once you meet Dr. Derek Tom, that helpfulness seems to disappear. We had a consultation to determine whether our baby needed a procedure to release his "posterior tongue-tie" (a term provided by a lactation consultant). It became apparent during our interaction that Dr. Tom is not used to answering in-depth questions or having his expertise challenged. Keep in mind that this procedure involves a permanent change and requires thoughtful decision-making. Although Dr. Tom tried to maintain a neutral stance, he explained that our baby is doing well now but may encounter problems later. When asked if our baby had a posterior tongue-tie, he said no, but he also didn't have an anterior tongue-tie. Dr. Tom mentioned that children with ties up to the tip of the tongue can do just fine. However, he personally preferred stopping the use of medication (we are giving our baby Pepcid) and opting for the procedure. When asked why he favored a permanent treatment over temporary medication, Dr. Tom responded that he would rather address the root of the problem instead of treating the symptoms. This response led me to question how he concluded that the tongue-tie is the primary cause of our baby's reflux. I inquired about the typical range of spit-up symptoms and whether our baby's symptoms were beyond normal. I also asked about objective measures, such as our baby's weight, height, and sleep patterns, all of which seemed satisfactory. Additionally, I requested evidence from studies, as I wanted to understand if aging and growth might resolve the issue versus undergoing the procedure. A permanent treatment requires robust evidence to support its use. In the end, I asked many questions, attempting to understand whether a tongue-tie could be a genuine issue supported by evidence and if the procedure was worth considering. Dr. Tom was clearly unprepared for such inquiries, as he became agitated and struggled to provide answers. Some red flags regarding the dentist's answers: - He initially questioned my knowledge of studies in an attempt to intimidate me with authority. As it turns out, my day job involves being a physicist and reading scientific papers. He then shifted the focus to the difficulty of conducting studies due to ethical boards and other factors, resorting to anecdotal evidence from his own practice. - He claimed that tongue-ties are associated with future problems as children age, including sleep apnea and underbites, but also stated that the procedure gained popularity only about ten years ago with the introduction of CO2 lasers. He bases this claim on a limited sample size from his small office. It seems his office has encountered enough sleep apnea cases involving ten-year-olds? (Also, if you're an orthodontic office, you will undoubtedly see underbites. Have you checked random individuals with perfect bites for tongue-ties?) - He claimed that "the procedure wouldn't be done if it wasn't helping." At first, I thought this meant that doctors wouldn't perform it if it didn't help, so I pointed out that doctors conducted more C-sections despite higher risks 2-3 decades ago due to the profitability of those procedures. Naturally, he became offended and vehemently denied being motivated by profit (despite the tongue-tie procedure being a specialty of his practice and likely a substantial part of their revenue). He attempted to backtrack by stating that he meant parents wouldn't choose this procedure if it wasn't helpful. Then, I asked him if this meant parents always made the right decisions. Once again, he backpedaled to a "no" response. So, what exactly is his claim based on if neither doctors nor parents are consistently reliable decision-makers in this situation? In the end, the main issue with Dr. Tom is his inability to address substantial questions about the evidence-based efficacy of this procedure. No one should undergo a permanent procedure performed by a so-called "expert" who cannot even explain why he is confident in the results without resorting to the authority card. It seems Dr. Tom would prefer submissive patients who don't challenge his critical thinking and simply accept his opinions as facts. Apparently, he's only easy to converse with when you don't have anything substantial to discuss. Edit: Having seen Dr. Tom's response, you can see him backtrack on what he said, yet again. I guess this is on par for a dentist who is scared to have other dentists review his work on his patients (did you see his ridiculous policy on not allowing other dentists to see his patients, even in cases of emergency?). read more

From the day our baby was born, we had been having latching issues. She wasn't gaining enough weight and I ended up bottle feeding her my pumped milk. We didn't want to continue that pattern so we sought the help of a lactation consultant (and nurse) by the name of Deborah "Debbie" Dominici (find her on Yelp as "Babies Breast Friend"). After a quick look, the probable culprit of our breastfeeding issues was found: our baby had a lip and tongue tie! Our lactation consultant recommended Dr. Derek Tom to do an official examination and to perform the release procedure. A tongue and lip tie release meant two, very important things for us: 1) baby would be able to transfer milk efficiently thereby gaining weight and exercising those crucial muscles of tongue, mouth and jaw and 2) I would no longer have painful, blistered and cracked nipples! Win win solution! As a new mom, I was very nervous about the procedure and the discomfort my baby would experience after but I knew it was necessary. I was also nervous about my baby getting the procedure done and I couldn't be in the room but Dr. Tom was wonderful and allowed my lactation consultant to be there to hold her. The procedure was 5 minutes and Dr. Tom performed it the same day as the consultation and examination. His office runs so efficiently and staff is very kind. He is genuinely concerned about your baby's wellbeing and though he is a busy doctor, he never rushed us or made us feel like a number. He was gentle with our baby and patient with us concerned, hovering parents. He explained everything he was going to do, what could be expected and what our post-OP duties were (a.k.a "the stretches"). I would recommend Dr. Derek Tom to anyone with a baby/child/big kid. He and his staff are gems! His office is located across the street from Anna Miller's on the second floor near where Tony Roma's used to be. Parking is free but sometimes limited depending on the time of your appointment. We've never had problems finding any, though. His office is kid- friendly and there is typically a movie playing on the screen. read more

FINALLY, my search for a pediatric dental Dr has ended! HAPPY DANCE! As, a parent of two little girls (6 and 8 years old) going to the dentist was a horrible nightmare. Constant tears and anxiety. Sleepless nights the night before. Might you add I went to two dental offices before I heard about Dr. Tom. As a parent, I believe the offices before scarred them. Dr Tom and his staff are incredibly AMAZING!!! If I could give them more than FIVE STARS I would. First time visit was a bit nerve wrecking just because this is the visit where they do the exam and basically let you know everything of what's going on. Front office staff AMAZING. Before, I went to my first appt with them. They basically laid out the expectations of the office. And this is me being completely honest. At, first when they laid out the expectations on how I could not go in to be a "silent parent" when getting teeth work done I was shocked and my anxiety shot up to the sky. I was super hesitant to get work done here especially knowing how my daughters were very scared of the dentist. I just could not allow that, but I gave it a try. BEST dental decision I ever made. The very first visit I was able to go into the office, but visits after that the office staff's will come out to your vehicle to grab your kids for their dental work. The hygienist and dental assistant were FABULOUS!!! My kids were just super comfortable with Aunty and uncle. I wish I knew uncle's name that we first had an encounter with because oooohhhh man both my kids were so comfortable with him. They could not keep quiet. I felt so bad for uncle. They kept wanting to talk storied with him. Also, can't forget the aunty that truly helped keep my 6 year old calm through out her teeth work without "laughing gas." AND yes my 6 year old graduate from "laughing gas." Actually, both my daughters did. Now, for Dr. TOM. BOMB.COM!!!!!!!! Do not expect your TYPICAL DENTAL DR. First, visit he came into the room with stretchy Hurley pants and a long sleeve shirt which threw me off guard because I was not expecting him to be dressed like that, but as a parent I feel that's what partially made my kids and I comfortable. He looked at me and basically told me lets start with my oldest then we will discuss my youngest. Both kids had tons of teeth work to be done. Dr. Tom took the time to explain everything to both my kids and I. He allowed my oldest to ask all the questions she had. He even kneeled down to my oldest's level while she was talking and made her feel comfortable. I have never had a dental Dr take the time and patience with my oldest. Then, it came my turn. He also allowed me to ask away and answered all my concerns. One thing, I remember him saying to me before I left though was all this that we are talking about before I even do work on their teeth please make sure you communicate all of this to them. So, parents YOU WILL HAVE HOMEWORK FROM DR. Now, here's the thing about Dr. Tom he is brutally honest (he gives me ALPHA male vibes). If you can't handle that this isn't the office for you. But, if you okay with that I promise you, the decision you make to go to this office you will not regret. Both my kids teeth are FINALLY stable and it thanks to Dr. TOM and his staff!! read more

I'm actually surprised with some of the negative reviews on here. I have to honestly say, I've never had any issues with Dr Tom or his staff. The only issue I really have is having to hear them remind my kids to floss even though I tell them every darn night LOL We've been coming here for a really long time and besides the boys regular cleanings every 6 months, we also come here because my younger son has braces. I was very happy Dr Tom could do braces and Invisalign. It makes it so convenient to have my son get his teeth cleaned and braces worked on in one appointment plus the cost of the braces was affordable. Most importantly, my boys love Dr Tom!!! He is so darn cool and he takes interest in their activities and school work. Dr Tom reminds them not only how to keep their teeth cleaned but to keep up their grades up in school. Dr. Tom and the rest of the staff are very professional and friendly. They take the time to explain everything to you and answer your questions. The location is convenient, and we tend to make appointments early on Saturday mornings so parking isn't an issue. The office environment is kid-friendly and decorated with an ocean theme. There are books and a play table in the waiting area and TVs above the exam chairs to keep the kids distracted. The hygienists are very good with the kids and extremely patient. When my baby was born, I thought something was wrong, but was told by inexperienced lactation consultants that she was fine. After many LC visits and pediatrician visits, we discovered she was lip and tongue tied. When Dr. Tom explained my daughters posterior tongue tie, I cried. I wasn't upset that she had it; I was so relieved that we finally knew what the issue was. Dr. Tom was helpful, informative, and there was zero pressure. We decided to do the procedure, which was done with lasers. It was hard for me, as a mom, to hear my baby cry for those two minutes, but I know it was worth it, and when she nursed directly after, it was already a lot better! Dr. Tom gave us his cell phone, and we texted him with any questions and about her recovery. We also went back a week later to check. He was very helpful, as was the rest of the staff. The worse part about the entire situation was having to do "stretches," which make sure that the ties don't regrow. The office worked with us, regarding insurance, and was extremely helpful. We switched our son to this Dental Care center from the first one he was at because we didn't like their vibe so my sisters-in-law recommended this place to us. We love them! The facility is spacious, clean, and very kid friendly. Going to the dentist is a terrifying experience for any kid.... we all remember that! My son has been going here for 2 years now and this dental office is really organized and runs like a well-oiled machine. The hygienists that do the cleaning are really sweet and good with kids and they have toys and books in the rooms. The office is located in the little strip mall across from Pearlridge above Toy's n Joys, and Milano Freezer and next to Lily Koi restaurant and Tony Roma's. My son just went in for 2 crowns on his molars on Monday which gave me a new perspective on the office. First of all, I felt sooo bad that my son's teeth were so bad in one year (we somehow missed the 6 month appointment), but Dr. Tom reassured me that these things happen (even with our 2x-a-day brushing) and that the baby teeth with the caps will fall out. Second, they are really quick and make the procedure as relaxing as possible for the child. My son's appointment was at 8:30 (they only do morning appt for fillings) and within a 1/2 hour before his appt, 4 kids had their teeth fixed and they were out of there. The kids take a mild sedative/relaxer medication an hour before they come in so that the procedure is safe for the child and less scary. I was very uneasy about giving him the medication because it sounds bad to medicate them for dental work, but it made him slower, more tired, and less anxious. I wish there was a better way than to medicate but 2 crowns done in 20 mins is pretty amazing. They did a very neat job and explained everything that was done. The only downside is that the medication makes them tired and woozy. The child is not allowed to go to school for the whole day and you have to watch them carefully for the first couple of hours after the procedure as they can fall and hurt themselves. They seem drunk (uncoordinated, sleepy and floppy). My son fell off of the couch when he got home and didn't try to get up. Strange and scary, but it was over in a few hours and he was back to his normal self. He was also impressed with his "new shiny teeth!" read more

LOVE this dental office. Everyone in this office is always so nice and sweet! My children have been coming to see Dr. Tom for the past 10 years (?). Both of my children just love coming to the dentist, I know no one likes the dentist. But the staff is always so kind to them. Yes, my children have had a cavity, so it's not always just a easy cleaning. The staff makes them feel so comfortable that they don't worry or have anxiety about going to the dentist. The waiting room is always nice and clean. It's a really cool waiting room with fishes on the wall. They always have a movie playing, usually a Disney movie. Awesome dental experience for me and my children!!! Dr. Tom has recently started doing orthodontics. I wish he did it earlier so my daughter could have done her braces with him. We've been with Dr. Tom for such a long time now, ever since Nainoa was a baby. He's currently 9 years old now, soon to be 10. My other two daughter's also comes here and they're 3 & soon to be 6. We are very thankful and we appreciate everything that they do for us. Especially for my keiki's. Dr. Tom, his staffs and everyone in this office are very friendly, smiley, caring and very professional. I love how friendly and supportive they're. Right when you enter the door, they stay smiling and greet you, Good morning or Good afternoon. They're always willing to help out whenever I needed emergency appt and whatnot. They try to always squeeze us in and there's no other dentist that does that. Cleaning wise and dental procedure, Dr. Tom is very thorough and cares so much about each kid. He gives me best advices on what to do and whatnot. He gives you choices on what the best and next step to do. Although, he might sound very anal but in a great kind of way. My third baby was born with a severe lip and tongue tie. She could not breastfeed effectively and she couldn't even suck at the bottle. After reading reviews here we decided that whether or not our insurance covered the laser lip&tongue tie surgery we would pay for it to preserve the breastfeeding relationship. Pumped Bottles were the only way my sweet girl was gaining weight. Dr. Tom saw us for a consult and then squeezed us in a few days later for the procedure. Fair warning, there will be blood and your baby will HATE the stretching exercises post op but if you do them as Dr. Tom recommends and do them correctly even though they cause baby pain then you will experience success. She had the surgery at 10 days old and now, 14 days later we have finally gone a full day with no bottle at all and it is a sweet relief to me- the pumping gets real old. There will still be bumps in the road but I'm so thankful that Dr. Tom listened my concerns, took me seriously, and cared about the well being of my baby. He did a great job with the surgery and he has earned 6 stars if I could give them :) As a note, we convinced our dental insurance to back date to birth and we only paid 80% but the price was reasonable even without the coverage. read more

I have three children who have attended this office for around 4 years now. My first visit post covid was in late April 2021, and I was hesitant to schedule a visit because of covid. However, the office staff, rooms, and overall covid preventions are amazing. Patients are brought into the office after temperature checks, and parents are called in during the time with the dentist. We chose coming here based on the reviews. I called on Wednesday and they scheduled us for Friday, which was pretty awesome. What wasn't so great and minus a star, was they wouldn't make an appointment without me first giving them my insurance information. Normally, you schedule and go in a little early to fill the paperwork out and provide the information, but that wasn't the case here. However, after you give them the information, you have two options of completing the patient questionnaire. You can come in a half hour early, or you can do it online. I chose the latter, since everyone's time is valuable. The dental office is located at Westridge and two doors down from Ichiriki. We checked in with the receptionist, who acknowledged us right away. We then took a seat in their pretty huge waiting room. It was equipped with a television and activity table to help entertain the kid's. There also, was a magazine rack to help entertain the adult's. Which by the way is nice, but in my case my kid did all the entertaining for me, if you know what I mean. Lol! There is one doctor to see everyone! I don't know how many hygenist and assistants they have, but it's quite a few. I thought we'd have a long wait, but that wasn't the case. We waited 15 minutes and we're escorted in to see the hygenist. She was pleasant and warm and went over our little one's history. She then proceeded to clean his teeth and I give her credit, because my little guy put in a good fight. When it was over, she educated us on his teeth and what to expect within the next few years. Dr. Tom then showed up and reviewed with us and examined our little guy's teeth. He also, gave us pointers on what things to avoid to make sure we keep his teeth healthy and hopefully, cavity free. He was with us maximum of 5 minutes and poof, he left and on to the next patient. Before we left the room, they have you fill out a postcard and this will be your reminder card that they'll mail to you, reminding you of your next appointment. We also, scored a new toothbrush, which was nice. As we were exiting, I stopped by the reception area to inquire of our next appointment. The young lady was sweet enough to just make an appointment for me and said they'll still send out the postcard to us as a reminder. Overall, I was very content with the visit and the genuine care that was given to our little guy and us. We were referred to Dr. Toms office to correct our daughters tongue and lip tie. We weren't quite sure if we wanted to do the procedure but we decided to go in and see Dr. Tom to get his perspective. Dr. Tom was very informative and thorough about the procedure and didn't make us feel like we HAD to do it. He was very knowledgeable about tongue/ lip ties and the problems they can cause in baby's. He asked us things about her eating and latching explaining to us some of the problems she has can be connected to her tongue ties. Dr. Tom didn't pressure us to do the procedure and told us we could take some time to think about it and get back to him. Our nurse was Kelsey and she was amazing!! As first time parents the dentist for you and your child can be very stressful. Kelsey made us feel at ease and very comfortable. She explained to us step by step what would be happening so we wouldn't be surprised at any point. All in all, Dr. Tom and his staff are amazing!!!
