Dr. Chang is so amazing and caring. Her staff were just as warm and welcoming and caring and always asked if I'm doing okay. Dr. Chang is accurate and very good with utilizing the tools so you don't feel any pain or discomfort at all. She makes sure you are always doing okay before she starts work on your teeth. Their level of empathy, friendliness, care for patients are top notch. Seems like they all get along too which is always so great to see a team working together really well. Makes you feel a lot more comfortable in a good setting with good teamwork and communication. I'd highly recommend Honu Smiles if you're looking for a caring humble well educated dentist who works really well with their team. It makes a huge difference. And I love this place But wanted share that if you tell me at the time of check in that my amount is out of pocket at $X amount and then tell me it's a different amount bc you added on fluoride without my consent, that's bad practice. Then when I question it at checkout I'm told "oh you can tell us next time that you don't want it". No, YOU should have told me at the time of CHECKIN, (as you normally do the last several times that I've been) that I can be added or not. Unpleasant experience after getting lectured (twice) by the condescending front office lady who thought it appropriate to chastize me for not knowing that a dual appointment made for my 2 kids would not be interchangeable...I was committing dental crimes for not knowing that only my daughter could go first today and not my son. I have been dutifully bringing my 2 kids here every 6 months for the last 11 years. I think we were one of their first customers. They take in many more clients now and it has become apparent after todayʻs experience that long-term clients are not valued here & if you donʻt know the minute details of their scheduling policies, get ready to be lectured like a 5-year old. Alright so far, but the office management needs improvement. My daughter had an appointment for treatment (cavity) and we have to reschedule her since she is sick. The next available appointment for treatment is in 5 weeks!! Apart from that she might be in pain if she waits 5 weeks. We are also going on a 5 week long trip to Europe. So my daughter wouldn't be seen for over 10 weeks. It is frustrating that Honu Smiles takes on so many new patients that they can't service their existing patients. 5 weeks for a rescheduling appointment for a kid with a cavity who's going on a trip seems unreasonable. In addition the office staff comes across slightly condescending. I would recommend finding a pediatric dentist who is better organized for rescheduling a sick kid. read more

Thank you to the Doctors and great staff. My 3 year old daughter recently had a fall on concrete landing on her face during the evening . They took her in the next day , and made sure everything was ok (X-rays and physical check) and walk me through everything. Staff is always friendly, Doctors are really patient and really take the time to talk to me and my daughter. We have been taking our three kids to Honu Smiles for about four years and they have been wonderful. Their staff are very patient with my squirmy ones and the dentists always explain what they see and what we need to pay attention to going forward. My oldest is autistic and has always had a very difficult time at the dentist but the staff at Honu Smiles is very good about working around him. We go in a private room and they take their time, allowing him to hold the tools and practice on himself before getting to work, which really helps to set him at ease. Prior to Honu Smiles, we weren't able to get xrays of my son's teeth because it was so difficult, but the team at Honu Smiles somehow makes it work! read more

I found Honu Smiles through a co-worker who happened to go to school with Dr. JW Chang. Since we live in Mililani and the practice is in Mililani Mauka, I was down! We made our first appointment and my daughter is currently a patient still. Located in Mililani Mauka right off the freeway. There's a bunch of establishments in this little complex (dialysis, dentist, orthopedics, veterinary, bank, etc) and the largest rec center in Mililani is here as well. There is ample parking and we've never had an issue getting a spot. The office is located on the second floor. The waiting room is inviting! Pre Covid there were toys that the kids could play with while they wait. There is a TV with cartoons to watch and there used to be ipads to play on while waiting. Pre Covid there was also bottled water and a Keurig to make coffee or tea, but all of that is now gone. There is a small table for the younger kiddos and chairs while you wait. The TV still plays cartoons and there is a temperature check station prior to checking in. The front staff have always been very nice. The office is cutely decorated with figurines in a glass case prior to going into the back. There are TV screens for the kids to watch something while they're getting their procedure done. After they're done they get a sticker and a small toy. Nicole is absolutely outstanding! She is SO PATIENT. She explains everything she is going to do, she speaks in a soft tone, and she's genuinely welcoming and calming. I completely adore her and how she interacts with my daughter, and of course how gentle she is when it comes to cleaning her teeth etc. Each time I go I'm so happy to get Nicole because she's THAT good all around. She's definitely an asset to this practice! Dr. JW Chang is very nice as well! You don't feel rushed at all and everyone answers questions and provides education. Highly recommended! read more

This place was great! Not only were all the staff there welcoming and friendly it is clean and very inviting for the little ones . Waiting area has great toys/ tablet center /tv for the kids as well as tv for the adults/ magazines/ free water and coffee! Took my 4 and 8 year old and they were great with them . Kids can pick a movie and watch tv while they work on their teeth. At the end they were given little gift bags with electrical toothbrushes,floss , and travel size tooth paste . I absolutely love Honu Smiles Pediatric Dentistry! To start off with a great location in Mililani Mauka ( good parking and easy to find and very central). My two children are patients here (17 & 3). From the moment that you walk in the staff makes you feel so welcomed. They remember you and your children's names. The clinic is brand new so it is a very updated facility. They have lots of things to do for your children while they wait, like toys, books puzzles, tv and iPads. They also have kid sized chairs. Patient care is phenomenal, Both Dr.Changs are so great with their patients. They have amazing bedside manner just so caring! The hygienist and dental assistants are also so nice and sweet. For the past 7 years I've searched high and low for THE pediatric dentist and I'm happy to say I finally found it!!! Well...Honu Smiles is actually hard to find as there isn't a sign anywhere outside of the building or on the building directory but once you find it-the back corner of the 2nd floor of Liberty Dialysis Mililani-you'll immediately know this is THE pediatric dental office for your kids! The office is bright and clean but screams kids come play here! There's puzzles, activity stations, 2 IPads, two TV's, and even foam mats for the littlest ones. And don't worry parents...one of those TV's is for you....the one right above the self serve coffee and water station. All of the staff at Honu Smiles are genuinely warm, friendly, patient and helpful! It isn't like those overrated popular pediatric dental offices with multiple hygienists and dentists who's smiles don't reach their eyes and they're rushing to get to the next kid. Dr. JW Chang spent a good 20 minutes going over my children's current dental status, needs, and potential future needs. And get this...all 3 of my children left with big smiles and amazing goody bags complete with toothpaste, floss AND electric toothbrushes!!! That's right, electric toothbrushes! Not cheap ones either...nice Oral B ones with replacement heads. All 3 of them also talked about how nice everybody was! And of course they compared the TVs and movie options to our former dentist; Dr. Chang has nicer TV's and newer movies lol read more

Completely unprofessional. I will never entertain this business again. Dentist and assistants services were good. The problem was with one of the girls at the front desk. She has a chip on her shoulder and a huge ego and can't admit when she is wrong. She also doesn't have an inkling about treating customers with respect, dignity, and courtesy. I brought my 2 children their at the same time. While waiting I asked if I could pay my bill and I PAID MY BILL. When my last child was done I walked out to the hallway and waited at the elevator. One of the secretaries came running out the door and YELLED from the end of the hall way that she could check me out. I told her that I already checked out. And she talked through the door... "did you guys check her out?" And then disappeared. She never once said oh sorry yeah they got you. Since she disappeared, I walked back to the office to see what was going on. I go up to the girl and repeated... "I already checked out. " And they girl makes up some lame excuse because she was in the wrong. And tells me I need to sign this paper, but when I look at the paper... it is just an estimate. I ask her about why I have to sign it because it says total due today. And she says, " oh we usually have parents sign that on the day of the appointment." (So why is she saying I have to sign it NOW???) She never once apologized for making the mistake. In fact I called back, after my children were not around me, to tell her I didn't appreciate being embarrassed because she thought I didn't pay my bill. She gave excuse after excuse after excuse and it wasn't even good excuses. She thinks she is smarter than she is. Not once ever apologizing for running out of the office, or yelling down the hallway, or embarrassing me or making mistake. It was... "oh no mom. I always talk from the end of the hallway. " or "I didn't know that you were embarrassed." Never again. My money can go to someone else who doesn't treat customers in such a horrible manner. read more

Definitely worth the five stars. Extra bonus points for being so close to home, but it would be worth the drive from elsewhere on island. Brand-spanking new office in a year-old building, so everything is fresh and clean and modern. It's on the second floor, and there's an elevator. Lots of toys in the waiting room, some books and magazines, and tablets for older kids to play on. Free coffee or tea for the grownups which is A++ for those first-thing-in-the-morning appointments, amirite? Weekdays and Saturday appointments available, plus they will text or email you a reminder ahead of your appointment. They also let parents accompany kids throughout the entire appointment, though they do have a no-photo policy. We gave this place a try after I was not impressed by a different pediatric dentist in Pearl City. Our kiddo was a preemie, which means he can have some enamel issues, and the dentist was on top of it right away - that meant a lot to me. He also takes a bigger-picture approach, giving advice on the types of snacks that are better for teeth than others, plus taking into consideration any health issues going on outside his mouth. The staff was really patient with my 4yo, who was a little apprehensive about X-rays and cleaning, but they put him at ease by explaining what they'd do ahead of time, showing him what they were going to use, what the tooth polisher feels like, etc. They also gave him an appropriate amount of autonomy, like choosing a fluoride flavor. And all of that is exactly the point of a pediatric dentist office - they should understand how kids work and can make them comfortable! TV screens on the ceiling so they can watch something while getting their teeth cleaned and examined (although I really wish there were shorter TV episodes, not movies - the kid is only in the chair like 20 minutes, and movies are barely getting started by the time they're done). Tons of stickers plus a bunch of vending machines with toys that they can spend a token on after they're finished. He also got a take-home bag with a toothbrush, toothpaste, and flossers. They accept HDS; I'm unsure what other plans they take. read more

We LOVE this place!!! Every single person here is kind, loving and so great with kids - it's amazing! When we first started coming here we lived in Waianae, and it was definitely worth the drive. From the moment we walked in we were welcomed and made to feel very comfortable. My daughter had some bad experiences with mean dentists and was nervous about an appointment here, yet by the time we left she was smiling and looking forward to the next visit. When you arrive, there is coffee (keurig) and creamer to greet you when you think an 8am appointment is a good idea. There is also water if you're cutting back on caffeine. The waiting room is immaculate, with toys for all ages, a tv playing movies and an iPad station with 2 iPads to keep children occupied while they wait for their name to be called. When you go in for your cleaning, there are TVs on the ceiling so the children can watch a show or movie (Netflix) while they get their teeth cleaned. They even have cute, fuzzy blankets to keep warm in the AC. Everyone is SO KIND, I cannot emphasize that enough. Dr. Chang is AMAZING. gentle, kind, informative - very relatable and kids are drawn to him. All in all, it's a fabulous place that we recommend to everyone we know. Love this place. I originally saw an ad on Facebook for this office and I am so glad I did. I liked them so much I moved my older son there from another office as well. They are very kid friendly and parent friendly as well. The office is modern and clean. The front desk is organized and knowledgeable (I love them). And my son cries (he's 3) when we have to LEAVE. Trust, after a morning where u didn't get to have your morning coffee this was a life savor. Water of miniature size is loved by the keikis. Latest technology for x-rays; quick and simple, 5 minutes and pau. Attentive hygienist, even to twins who cried the entire time (1st timers). My 4 year old had some major stains and the hygienist was very good in getting it taken care of and the appoinment time was not rushed. Courteous, knowledgable and concerned dentist, Dr Ching. Just making sure that the stains were not due to low iron or eating too much blueberries, multivitamins and how to brush those areas later. Modern decor tailored to children eg. Dentist chairs were fun colors and fit a child comfortably. There were gum ball type machines with toys for children after their exams; Stickers of all types too. Flat screen tv to watch movies while the kids got their teeth cleaned. You can also sit in the room with your child. There is a separation of room but not enclosed kind. Take home bag of the not so normal, first time incentive: electrical toothbrushes, floss and full size toothpaste!! I have taken my 4 yr old daughter on four different dentist appointments and all have been so disappointing. My prayers came true when i got this flyer in the mail and I began researching the company. I couldn't find much, but the philosophy of their practice drew me in! They took three of my daughters in On the same time and day. They have an inviting dentistry that is fully emersed with all aspects of children. The culture is friendly, warm, inviting and they remain this way the entire time. They speak on a level that is professional enough for parents but are able get on a level where children are comfortable and relaxed. I can't rave enough as my anxiety of taking my children to the dentist were super high, but now I have faith that the right choice of coming to Honu smiles dentist is a now a relationship for years to come. This is by far the best pediatric dentist I've seen. The waiting area was clean and full of toys and books. They even had free water and coffee available. The staff was friendly and great with kids, they all knew how to make my kids feel comfortable and at ease. When we got to the actual dentist's chair I was pleased to see they had tv's fixed to the ceiling so that when the children were laying down getting their teeth cleaned they had something to distract them. My kids have been going here since we moved to Oahu 3 years ago. Everyone's great, from the front desk to the assistants, to the dentists and hygienists. They have TV's on the ceiling which helps distract my kids. They also always have fun stickers and give the kids a token after every visit so they can get a toy from the little machines. My younger one has autism and is non-verbal and the staff is always very patient with her. The waiting room is nice as well. There's always coffee and water bottles. They provide a couple of ipads and a TV. There are also books and toys. Last time we went was after Christmas and they added the Ninja Turtles arcade game. read more

Our first visit to Honu Smiles was great! Everyone was kind, they did a good job cleaning my two kids teeth. Unfortunately, my oldest (5) needed a good amount of work. And to start, I know I'm the only one to blame for her oral hygiene. I was told she would need a tooth extraction and a crown, and that several other teeth had decay and they would put something on to slow the decay. They also told me to watch her bad tooth for signs of infection. The very next day(which seemed odd) her cheek was swelling. So I called and they had us come back in. They prescribed her an antibiotic and said to come back the next week to check the swelling to see if they could numb her enough to do the extraction. The only appointment they had was only two days later, so we went in expecting to check the infection and swelling. I got there and was told they were doing the extraction and a crown that day. I though that was soon, seeing she only had the antibiotic for two days. But I trusted them. They gave her gas and numbed her, which scared her but she did okay. They then started working, drilling her teeth. She was doing fine at first, but as the drilling got deeper she started to scream out in pain. They told her to hold still and that she was fine. My gut told me to say something, but again, I trusted them and hoped they'd be able to work fast. We then endured 20-30 more minutes of screaming and crying and pinning her down. I'm mad at myself for not saying anything, but I'm more upset that the professionals I trusted did nothing when she was obviously in extreme pain. They also were not very nice to her, repeatedly telling her she needed to hold still and they were just "brushing her teeth". I understand that kids get scared, and that working on them is hard. But they didn't once ask how she felt, if it was hurting, or even check to see if she was numbed all the way. It all ended with a traumatized child who is never going to want to see a dentist again. And to top it off, when paying at the front office they tried to schedule another appointment for more treatment(that I hadn't been told about) and when I asked what they needed to do, they said, "umm it just looks like a lot more crowns, root canals and fillings". It all felt very off and I was extremely uncomfortable the whole time. Unfortunately, I will not be bringing my kids back here. read more

When we lived in Hawaii we absolutely loved going to this dentist! I was sad to leave them when we had to relocate. We are now on our third dentist for my 3 year old daughter here in Texas because their first option and ONLY option is to put caps on her for the SMALLEST cavity between her molars. When I took my older daughter(at the time 4) to Honu smiles, she had a cavity between her molars and they chose to use silver diamine fluoride (SDF). Best decision and completely painless! Great clean, new place! Doctor suggested my son to have an extraction. We came into our appt to have other stuff done. He took a look and said we no longer need to pull it, but rather monitor if we do need to in the future. That shows he doesn't just want my money. He would've gotten $200 for that single appt. We have been visiting Honu Smiles for 2 years now. I cannot say enough great things about them! Being a military spouse, one of the top 3 worst things is finding new docs for everything, so I will be so incredibly sad when we must move off the island. The office is bright, clean, modern and organized. The office staff is always so friendly, even though I only see them every 3-6 months depending on our dentistry needs, they always treat us like we're there every week! I felt it necessary to write this review today because we had an appointment this afternoon and walked in on an irate parent yelling at the sweet office staff about some sort of scheduling and appointment mishap that meant she would have to stay an extra hour and a half in the office with her 3 kids. I mean, mistakes happen, and it's a bummer, but ya know....it's not the end of the world. The upset parent even went so far as to curse loudly in a waiting room that had her kids and mine in it. I almost said something to her then. Even while they were handling her issue, they still got me checked in and acted with the utmost professionalism. Less than 5 minutes later we were called back and had an amazing cleaning and check up by the dental hygienists and Dr. JW. They are always very punctual and timely. I've never spent more than an hour there with both of my kids for their 6 month cleanings. They are also so patient with my sassy, dramatic 5 year old. They are always so thorough in explaining any issues or problems they see, or might occur in the future. I have found their practice to be preventive in nature, but not in a greedy, unnecessary way. My 7 year old son, even says he likes going to the dentist. For someone who had an awful pediatric dentist experience and now has full on dental anxiety, it makes my heart so happy. Afterwards, I paid our copay and made our next 6 month appointment, all the while their two front office staff were apologizing profusely about the irate mother. I love how it's not overly crowded and the staff is so friendly. It's in Mililani Mauka so now we don't have to drive into traffic from Waipio. We have four kids (3 under 5) and the experience was so smooth compared to another office my oldest used to go to. They also don't make you feel like a bad parent if they find a cavity. There are a variety of activities for the kids to prep them before going on "the chair." The facility is brand new and clean. They also play Netflix onscreen while your child is in the chair! The only reason we wouldn't recommend them is to keep them to ourselves so they don't get too crowded. read more
