the flavors......unmatched my partner and I decided to take a little trip but heading up north I knew vegan options would be hard to come by. so glad we found aiko - not only did they have vegan options but they were really delicious. i got the Yakisoba w/ Kokonattsu Sauce - I loved all the toppings - Crispy Shallots, Cucumbers, Baby Corn, Mint, Basil, Cilantro, Green Onions, Pickled Carrots & Daikon. the noodles themselves were super salty which paired really well with the acidity and freshness of the toppings. this dish was so flavorful. my partner got a fried tofu sandwich. the bun was soft. the tofu was fried in rice paper which i thought was super cool. the non-vegan version comes with ranch which i'm sure would have been delicious because it definitely needed a sauce. so glad we found a spot with some delicious vegan options. read more

The Food: Over-cooked and over-hyped (by the chef). I've lived in Tokyo and had okonomiyaki in Tokyo, Nara, Hiroshima, and Osaka, and I can say that this did not deserve the name nor the boasting of the chef. It was middling at best. The egg was overcooked, there was barely any discernable cabbage in it, and the shrimp was clearly pre-cooked cocktail shrimp that were made rubbery from their second cook. The Atomosphere: The Coin Slot was a nice little corner to enjoy a drink and a meal, with very friendly staff. Definitely recommend the pizza! The Experience: The chef/owner was unprofessional, clearly stretched thin (lacked the humility to admit he was overwhelmed), and threatened to call the police on my friend when she asked for a refund for food he never produced and refused to issue a receipt. The Rundown: While visiting Traverse City I visited the Aiko truck with friends in town from out-of-state. Each year I take them on a tour through parts of Michigan and show them the beauty of my home state. Having lived in Tokyo for a time, I was excited to try Aiko, as I saw okonomiyaki on the menu, which is a favorite of mine. As we approached the truck, the owner and chef -- unprompted -- informed us that the fair was handcrafted and not fast food, so a wait and patience would be required (he approximated the cooking time would be 15 minutes), as he was the only cook. We were fine with this, as we also wished to sit and enjoy the atmosphere. There was no line when we arrived. We placed our orders online via the QR code as instructed: I ordered the okonomiyaki with shrimp and bacon at 7:21pm, and my friends placed theirs around the same time. One of my friends checked on our food after 40 minutes -- an incredible wait for STREET FOOD -- and was given a buzzer and told the food would be ready soon. The wait time was lengthy enough that one of my friends went and ordered a slice of pizza. Eventually we were buzzed that the food was ready and ended up with a tray of orders that included 4/5 of our orders (the pizza friend's ribs and salad were missing) + an additional okonomiyaki we couldn't place. We later overheard him blame us for taking another person's order -- even though he had given us a tray with their food on it -- so I walked around until I found the person who had placed the order. She was only one of 4 patrons after us who had screwed up orders. When my friend inquired about her missing ribs and cold salad, she was berated for her "lack patience" and the authenticity and quality of the food we were being graced with. At this point it was 8:36pm. AGAIN: She ordered the ribs and COLD SALAD. When it was clear she wasn't getting anywhere, she requested a refund, which was initially refused. She calmly repeated herself over and over that she no longer wanted the food, she just wanted her money back, and the owner threatened to call the police if we did not leave. I told him he was welcome to do so, as 3 of us were lawyers and the person he was threatening actually works for the MI Department of Public Health (in food access!). He backed down at that point and said he issued the refund. When my friend also asked for a printed copy of the refund receipt, he refused, stating his machine could not issue paper receipts. We issued complaints to the owner of The Coin Slot about our experience and later received a snide remark from the chef/owner of Aiko to, "Say hello to Cornell [West] for him." All 5 of us identify as black. UPDATE to Owner's Response: We had pizza slices from Two Sons Pizza afterward -- inside Coin Slot (strongly recommend) -- I don't know anyone named Cornell, I'd never been to Traverse City before that day, and I'm not from Detroit. read more

He kept reminding us this was not burgers and not fast. Which was fine. My friend was told all our orders would come out together. After 40 minutes my friends got their order but mine was missing. So I went to check. The owner proceeded to be rude, hostile, and aggressive. He threatened to call the police on us, a group of black people. When I took him up on a refund, he refused to give me a refund until after he made everyone else's order. Judging by his inability to complete orders, it would have been hours. He was also very nice to his white clientele. NEVER PATRONIZE THIS TRUCK. I do recommend the Coin Slot and Two Sons Pizza at this site. He also kept threatening that this was all on video. I would like him to post the video so everyone can see how much of am unhinged, lying, failure of a chef he is. Edit to respond: To begin the chef and the owner are the same person, so it is extremely weird to write as if you are not. I was the person whose food you forgot to make. When I asked for a time estimate you offered a refund, then refused to actually give it. I asked for a receipt and you stated that you could not. I then informed you that that was against the health department rules. And stood waiting for a receipt. You called me drunk even though I had barely had half a drink. Which was part of you being RACIST and trying to discredit my requests. My friends walked over to see what the problem was. You threatened to call the police. You were then informed that there were 3 lawyers in our group so try it. Then you issued my refund. And continued to get other orders wrong. I reported your behavior to the owner of the lot. Also staff at the outdoor bar who heard you verbally abusing us came to apologize. Then when we were relaxing, actually drinking and eating pizza (because your trash food left everyone hungry), you came to further harass us with your presence. We were INSIDE at a different location, and you were not invited to our table or our space. It was aggressive and meant to intimidate us. YOU ARE DELUSIONAL AND SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH YOU! read more

It had a well balanced flavor- the sauce was spicy and saucy, the chicken was juicy, and the cabbage topping complimented the chicken with the perfect amount of crunch. We ordered Yaki Asuparagusu No Goma-ae and a brunch item which was an open faced rice paper crisped with tofu, onions, cucumber, crispy shallots and a fried duck egg....both were delicious and a welcomed alternative to typical pub fare. The owner/chef is rude a​nd unprofessional. The food was not good enough to justify the terrible experience my friends had with Ryan, who is clearly not ready to run a business. I do not generally leave reviews on Yelp but since he called one of my friends who detailed our experience on here a liar, I feel compelled to reaffirm what she has stated. Ryan made a mistake on an order (that took way too long for street food, but we were fine with waiting!) and then handled the situation just terribly. My friend who's order was missing was so calm that I had no idea there was even a confrontation happening but for the length of time of the interaction. Ryan knew exactly what he was doing when he threatened to call the police on 5 Black people for one person requesting a refund. I deeply appreciate the Coin Slot, where the truck is located, as the bar staff and staff at the pizza place were incredibly kind and went above and beyond to turn our bad night around.
