Is it me? The ophthalmologist, Amelia Fong, answered all my questions. Eyes are fairly healthy for my age. Thought it was going well. She said I didn't have to come back for another year. Yearly check ups are the standard. Unlike another opthalmologist who wanted me to come back every six months without ever indicating I had a problem. Felt like my insurance was being milked. Checking out, the clerk tells me "The doctor said you can visit any doctor in a year." I was confused. Thought I just heard her say to come back in a year. Asked why I couldn't return here. Was told the doctor is very busy. Odd, because I got this first appointment in a week. Insisted on making the first available appointment fifteen months from now. If the waiting room had been empty, might have been less polite about it. Couldn't help but think this was the classic bum's rush. Did I not meet the practice demographic? Did I ask too many questions? Something wrong with my insurance? Or did the clerk take a dislike to me? Rude staff have driven me away from a number of physicians. Asked friends, including a medical professional, and none ever had that happen. As a feminist since age 5, I prefer to patronize women businesses. And for a host of reasons, I prefer women medical professionals to male. But, considering problems with the last two female ophthalmologists, maybe I should be less exclusive. I got a appointment made here by my other eye doctor, and I'm GLAD that I got referred to Aina Haina Eye center to see DR Amelia FONG, from the moment I stepped in to the doctors office I was greeted by the front desk staff a female lady didn't get to know her name but she helped me very quick by getting checked in and doing some paper work before seeing the eye doctor. Also big thanks to the tech Sylvia she helped me do my eye exam etc and she took my eye pictures. She was very HELPFUL from the start till the end of my doctors check up. Sylvia thanks a lot for your care you did an awesome job, and to Dr Amelia Fong I'm so glad that you did my eye check up and for taking care of my needs. This review is so overdue!! I couldn't be more happy with Dr. Tham and Dr. Fong and am sooooo glad to have found this office!! The history is that I've had a teary left eye for 10+ years and have asked every optometrist and ophthalmologist I've seen about it because it's an every day nuisance!! If I wear any eye makeup, my left eye is smeared before I'm even done and I am CONSTANTLY dabbing at my eye throughout the day - which is definitely not optimal during the last few years with Covid! Each optometrist and ophthalmologist said there's nothing wrong with your eye and the only advice I was given by one ophthalmologist was to put a hot compress on my eyes and gently massage them so that the oil glands are not clogged. Nothing worked!! I came to see Dr. Tham for a regular vision checkup and contact lens prescription and mentioned my teary left eye again and she looked at my tear duct and saw that the left ones were blocked and suggested I make another appointment with Dr. Fong who's an oculoplastic surgeon so that she could use a probe and clear/flush the blockage. Dr. Tham also spent the time to draw out the anatomy of the eye and explain what's was probably happening. I was hopeful for the very first time that this might finally be a solution! I was so excited for my appointment with Dr. Fong and sure enough, she used the probes - cleared the blockage in my tear ducts (upper and lower left eye) and flushed them with saline. The whole thing took less than 15 minutes and it's been a few months and it's been absolutely wonderful!! Thank you so so much Dr. Tham and Dr. Fong!! You both helped solve this when countless other doctors couldn't!! I'm so so grateful every day!! read more

Every year I dread going to the doctors because I get worried they're going to tell me something is wrong with my eyes from surfing or being outside too much. Not this year! I had a good experience getting my eyes checked. It's been a while, so I expected it to be a thorough exam and take some time. Parking was good. There is a big lot in front of Foodland, and I had no problems finding a spot. Entering the building was great because it was hot outside and the a/c was a welcome relief on a humid day. The office is on the second floor, and there is an elevator to take you there. After getting to the office, I was immediately greeted and asked what they could do for me. I checked-in and found a seat. The office itself seemed clean and cozy. All the wood furnishing gave it that contemporary Hawaii ambiance feel. The wait seemed to go by quickly as I was cooling off from humidity outside. The staff did their assessment and then set me up for the doctor. When the eye doctor came in, I was pleasantly surprised to see a young face. Just a few weeks ago I found out my medical doctor was retiring. Fortunately, though she seemed to know what she was doing and I felt like my vision was in good hands. I was curious about this young doctor, so I tried to get her story. It turns out she's from Hawaii, went to Punahou, away for college, came back for med-school in Hawaii, but had to go to back to the mainland to get specially trained in plastic surgery for the eyes. Alright good to know. Anyway, my exams went well, and I appreciated the doc's openness and talking story with a new patient. Overall it was excellent visit. The staff was friendly and considerate of my time. I'm glad I found an eye doc that's not retiring anytime soon. read more

Yes when Dr. Cassen was there it was the best! Now a new doctor took over & its BAD! I understand that she is new, young & SLOW!!! Dr. Cassen was always on time & the appt didnt take more than 1 hour. I had to reschedule my first appt cause i waited a 1/2 hour & would be late for my next appt. Then when my daughter went, we got there early & asked if she was running on time? They said yes. In the meantime we see other customers come in after us & GET SEEN BEFORE US!! When it was 15 minutes after our appt., i stood up & checked on status? Still not getting seen & they remember that i had to reschedule my appt because the Doctor was LATE! What is the problem??? I understand Doctors run late & emergency happen, but please be honest with your incoming customers. Also this doctor charges for fees Dr. Cassen never did! And she doesnt tell you or ask you? Not a good way to do business!! How rude that she takes Dr. Cassen's customers & MANIPULATES THEM! I wonder what Dr Cassen would think if she knew who took over her good name?? She is ruining her reputation since Aina Haina Eye Center is what Dr Cassen built! Yes, i mean CUSTOMERS instead of Patients. But she just wanted to thank the staff at Aina Haina Eye Center for the time spent there and to thank her patients for all the great memories.****** Dr. Koide is the best! I might be biased because she is also my wife . But I do know that she really knows her stuff. Well educated Punahou (Iolani is better thou), UCLA and Cal for her doctorate. I also see how dedicated to her work she is. How she goes beyond for her patients, even after she leaves the office. Although I am also a doctor, I know she is the smart one in the family. I hear about the unusual cases she solves and am amazed at how intuitive she is. She doesn't sleep until she figures out how to help her patients. I know for a fact she cares about all her patients. A definite perfectionist. The rest of the staff and Dr. Cassen are great as well. My great grandma, grandma, parents have all been patients here. I guess you can say our family trust them. I just finished my eye exam at the Aina Haina Eye Center. I was pleasantly greeted at the front desk by two friendly young ladies. The office is very nice, clean, and welcoming. My first exams was done by Lily, Lily is a very nice person and did an excellent job performing my eye exams. She thoroughly explained every part of the procedures and made me feel very much at ease. Then Doctor Janet Tham came in to work on more exams with me. Doctor Tham was very nice and also did a great job explaining each procedure to me. I could very much feel the care and consideration of these two ladies, and it was obvious they love their jobs, because they do it exceptionally well. Although my exams were taken very seriously, I never once felt like I was at a doctors office. It felt more like visiting a friend. I had a routine eye exam today. It was a very pleasant experience. I didn't get the names of the receptionist nor the doctor's assistant, but they were very nice and helpful. I know the name of the optometrist who saw me because she gave me her card. Her name is Janet Tham. It was my first time seeing her. We had Dr Cassen for many years and she was very good. She always reviewed the results of the exam with me. When Amelia took over we had to find another Dr because the office is closed on Saturday. The one time my daughter was in for our final appt on a weekday, Amelia wasn't there. I found a Dr in the Kahala area who is open half day on Saturdays. read more

I have been coming to this location for years. Even through the change in doctors, I am a still a loyal customer. Ever since I could remember, I needed to wear glasses to perfect my vision. In high school, I was a little embarrassed to wear glasses due to the negative comments/reactions I feared I would get. When my mother forced me to come to the Eye doc and get an eye exam, I was a little nervous. My first experience here was amazing. I remember it to this day. Gloria was fun and energetic. She helped me pick out my first pair of glasses that matched my style and pudgy face. As the years progressed, I kept coming back for my annual exam. Shelly and Gloria are very helpful when it comes to picking out a new / hip frame for my glasses. I have received nothing but GREAT customer service from these ladies. Dr. Koide is my current doctor. This a is lovely quaint Eye Office. We have visited here for eye appointments with our son; its a child friendly environment with toys and most of the staff have children of their own. We also came in for an urgent appointment due my husband's eye. They were quick to take us in and the medicine my husband received took care of the problem. Service is not the same after Dr. Cassen retired. My son needed contacts and because his prescription expired in April and he only had a 2 weeks supply left, they wouldn't give him contacts to last him until the next appointment that they had open in mid July. If they had given him a supply to last him till the doctor checked him, I would have stayed on as a customer since my whole family have been patients of Dr. Cassen for many, many years . Because of this we found a doctor that could see my son next week in order to get him a supply of contact lenses! read more

Dr. Cassen is my favorite eye doctor and has been since I was 12. My son who has vision correction needs goes there and he's 12 now. It's funny how life works out. She's the best there is and the other doctors on her staff are awesome. Here's a tip if you get your glasses here: If you need them re-fitted to your face or adjusted, go in and they do it for free. My son is always messing with his glasses so we go here at least once every three months to have them adjusted. read more

Not a good experience with the new doctor since Dr. Cassen retired. The appointment took longer than it should have, and the new doctor tries to up-sell services to you. She also charges more fees for the exact same services that Dr. Cassen provided. I will be looking for another eye doctor. read more

I have been going here for 7 years and I have not had one problem. Everyone here is so sweet and helpful. There also very personal which I love. I go to school in California and when I come back to see family and get all my check ups done they also ask me how everything is going, how school is, my current jobs, and my future plans just like I would with a family member I haven't seen in a while. Over the years I have seen 3 different doctors and they're all wonderful. This summer I am going backpacking in Europe and thought that it would probably be easier if I got a prescription for daily lenses (so I wouldn't have to carry around solution). I wasn't to sure how this would work with me being in California but all it took was one phone call. Thank you! read more

She is short staffed and got rid of the very pleasant optician that helped me last month and replaced her with a rude young man.
