Service was good cashier was helpful with my questions. Overall the place is nice, plenty of parking and will definitely be back.

This place is a nice place for a quick bite. I had the jerk salmon wrap. Although it was a bit too spicy for me, it was delicious! The place is LOUD and electric! A fun place to hangout for a super casual lunch or early dinner. The staff was friendly. They car about cleanliness and I loved to see the dining room being cleaned everytime there was a lull. I will definitely be back!

This is a nice restaurant in a good location. I've also tried the location in Bronzeville where I feel I've enjoyed the food more. Today, we had the Tuscany panini, the tomato spinach bisque and a grilled chicken cheddar sandwich. The soup is consistently amazing. I have stopped here just for the soup a couple of times. The panini wasn't good and I wanted it to be so much because I love pesto. The pesto lacked flavor, was missing lemon or something. My son said his grilled chicken sandwich was okay. The food here could use a little more umph has been my experience. The soup is divine, though. Oh I forgot one thing. I asked for a small cup of pesto in my sandwich was dry when I made it home, they asked me for $1.10, which I found insane. The prices here are not inexpensive so to charge a customer who has spent $30 for another $1.10 for a couple squeezes of pesto just felt greedy and unreasonable.

Stopped here on a whim as we are not normally in this area. Sandwiches and sweets was the theme here and felt like an updated cafeteria. Spacious inside and you order at the counter. We decided on a few things: chicken cheddar croissant, Ruben panini, potato salad, sweet potato cheesecake and upgraded chips for soup. There two soups to choose from-tomato and clam chowder. I went for the clam chowder which was very good. Downside is no salt or pepper at the tables nor in the bag. They packed everything like a to go although we stayed to dine in. They also have a smoothie selection if you are interested in that. My husband liked the chicken sandwich even though the gardinera was a little tangy for him. My Ruben had a similar reaction from me. Next time I will leave off the thousand island dressing, otherwise it was good. Both sandwiches had a nice amount of cheese and meat. If you like the mustard type potato salad and sweet relish this is for you. The cheesecake was good. Lots of nuts and caramel. I could do without the added honey but still delicious. Would definitely go again.

I'm usually a regular at the Hyde park location but I stopped in with a friend. I felt as though the menu is slightly different than the other one... the customer service wasn't that great... the cashier wasn't exactly friendly, but idk maybe she wasn't having a good day. The food was good, no complaints. They have a coffee bar inside this location, I don't believe the Hyde park spot has one.

Let me start with saying this is my first time there! I have been riding past this place for a while and I've always been intrigued and I found out it is black owned so I had to try it! I ordered the Caribbean Jerk Chicken Wrap and let me tell you how flavor full it is!!! The meat was not over or undercooked, the veggies inside and the sauce all blended together very well! It even has a little kick to it which I love! The pineapple lemonade I ordered was good as well!! The service was great, even though I ordered food Togo they treated me as if I was dinning in, they were nice and courteous! The inside is nice and spacious definitely sets the ambiance for a place you should sit down and eat. I will definitely be back to sit down and eat next time! But if you are in the area make sure you go try it!

Been a fan since the Bronzeville location was the one and only. I have tried the Beverly locale a few times and the food is just as good. I tend to get a salad or anything jerk. Call in orders are taken and recommended if you are in a rush. Everything is made to order so be prepared for a wait if dining in. Love it.

My cousin and I came here because it was close to her house and they have vegan options. I had also heard good things about them and wanted to give it a try. The workers there were very friendly and our food came out quick. I had the vegan jerk wrap and my cousin had a vegan chicken wrap. I thoroughly enjoyed my wrap as it wasn't too spicy and was well seasoned. You also get a choice of chips. For $10 that's a great price and I highly recommend this place!

    Madge salad

Paying attention to what ppl order. My daughter ordered salmon wrap and she ordered me a Maya Salad, but I received a Madge's salad completely different. We live too far to take it bk and pay the difference. I'm so disappointed! I had a taste for what I ordered and it was my first and last time going.

First time I came in got southwestern chicken soup. Spicy without being overwhelmingly hot. Lot better than progreessos version of the soup. And a grilled cheese that came with fries. Grilled cheese is an outstanding sandwich one that I don't eat as much since I'm not a kid anymore but it felt all warm, gooey brought back childhood memories. Second time I came got jerk chicken salad. Flavorful, zesty. The jerk chicken didn't have the taste from like an actual jerk place but I liked it. I got the Maplewood fat pug for a beverage. It also looks like they sell beer to go.

Food is fantastic. Price is high. Service from Nick (owner) was TERRIBLE…read more I was a long-time (20+ yr), loyal customer up til I was yelled at by Nick because I spoke up about consistently receiving orders much later than promised via online orders. I had placed many online orders for pick-up on my 30min lunch break, to ensure I had proper time to drive to, pick up my food, and quickly drive back from the restaurant. After a few pick-ups took around 20mins after promised time, I was pretty upset. I was told they only start making food once the person is there to pick it up, so I asked what's the point of placing an order online and receiving a pick-up time, when the food only starts to get made once you're at the restaurant to pick up? That's when the owner stepped in (My family and I have had many pleasant convos with him before at the old location), turned red, bunched up his face, and legit yelled at me "What do you expect? Do you want your fries to be cold or do you want them fresh?" (I was taken aback, and responded "I expect my order to be ready at the time indicated"). He told me I could go elsewhere. I get it. I was receiving consistently poor service and was upset when I asked the cashier about timing, so he stepped in to defend his worker. What I don't get is how you can tell a customer to go somewhere else when they're expecting their food at the time promised (or at least within 5 mins...I'm not THAT picky). Perhaps my expectations are too high?

This black owned business has above average standing room in the waiting area, two TVs and an ATM with a good amount of seats/benches. Seems like it might've been an old chinese food joint with a few tables, but they opted for a pure takeout experience (which is unfortunately the trend nowadays.) Since it was my first time I thought I'd try both the fish and chicken combo along with the dirty rice. The total came out to be $24 with the wait being about 15 minutes. The staff overall were nice.      After leaving the place and checking the food. I realized that the combo dinner didn't contain a roll and coleslaw like advertised which was kind of disappointing. It did have the fries though. The requested lemon pepper was there, but they also seasoned the chicken/catfish with garlic powder, salt and parsley which is fine. Everything was fried hard, but not dry which creates the perfect pleasurable crunch. The chicken and fish tasted better than a lot of the restaurants in the area with the fish having a lightness to the breading that's sorely missed. Some of the chicken was weirdly tough though as if it was slightly undercooked.      Speaking of misses we have to talk about the dirty rice. Dirty rice is one of those dishes that seems like it either is absolute perfection or an abomination with no in-between. This unfortunately falls into the latter with it not only looking boring with all brown notes, but the initial taste as well as texture being an off putting creamy rancid trip to flavor hell. After a just a few bites my stomach turned which does not bode well for this dish. I have no idea what went wrong here, but it seems like it may have been sitting out too long. Even the smell was a bit rancid. At least it has a good ratio of ground beef to rice which a lot of places skimp on. They also attempted to add in some vegetables like peppers although they are barely noticeable.       Overall Surf's up is a good spot with friendly staff, decent prices, but some issues with quality. My advice is to make sure the cooking temps are correct and consistent. Definitely make sure if food is sitting idle, that it is kept at the mandatory minimum of 140 degrees farenheit to avoid it going rancid so quickly. Also, double check the orders before sending them out or edit the menu if it is outdated.
