June 2025 wife and I flew from San Francisco to Amsterdam, and then Frankfurt, Germany to San Francisco. Late April 2026 flew from San Francisco to London, and then Paris to San Francisco. All four flights by United Airlines business class, and on time departures and arrivals. We flew business class as Viking river cruises able to get us a 50% discount on business class fares in lieu of free economy fares, reserving 9 months in advance. At San Francisco, Frankfurt, and Paris Charles De Gaulle airports, we can eat hot food in the United or Celebi Platinum or Star Alliance lounges respectively by scanning our business class ticket. Traveling by business class meant expedited baggage check in in San Francisco and Paris. Also expedited security checks and passport control in Paris Charles De Gaulle, which is a very big thing if you've seen the lengthy passport control lines in Europe. United Airlines Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner can seat 257 passengers with 3 restrooms for the 48 lay flat business class cubicles. The 21 premium plus seats, 39 economy plus seats, and 149 economy seats share three restrooms in the middle of the plane, toward the front of the economy section, and behind the economy plus section. seat map at https://www.united.com/en/us/fly/company/aircraft/boeing-787-9-dreamliner.html The seating configuration is 3-3-3 in Economy and Economy Plus, 2-3-2 in premium plus, and 1-2-1 in business class. Each business class lay flat bed seat takes up the same amount of room as 4 economy seats, and every business class seat is by the aisle. I declined as my wife needs assistance getting her 25 pound carry on luggage into the overhead bin, and we would be seated on different aisles. I asked for contiguous window row seats for us. A and L are window seats, but business class row seating in United Boeing 787-8, 787-9, and 787-10 Dreamliners are staggered, with odd number rows adjacent to windows, and even number rows seated about 9 inches from the window in business class. So seat 2A is really like seat 2B with 2A being a 9" wide arm rest. The feet of passenger 3A in lay flat seat mode are underneath that covered arm rest. I got myself an odd number row, and my wife sat in the row behind me, 9 inches from the window. 10 hour 40 minute flight to Amsterdam departing at 5pm and landing at 1pm the next day, flying over the polar route at night and during the daytime mainly over ocean. 9 hour time difference Full meal with appetizer, main course, and dessert and unlimited beverages. After 24 years of marriage, my wife is getting picky in her old age, and absolutely hated the chicken and the fish. I got the beef and she got the vegetarian option. Business class passengers get a blue leather vanity kit including eye mask, ear plugs, disposable socks, bamboo toothbrush, toothpaste, mouth wash, and complete skin care kit, the latter I immediately gave to my wife. Great entertainment with airline provided excellent headsets and displays built into the back of the seats, and adjustable angled. I took off my shoes, and the stewardess immediately got me some disposable slippers, not taking a chance that my socks would stink up the cabin. Best thing of course is the lay flat seats, and being able to get 4 hours sleep between dinner and breakfast, and waking up the next day refreshed. It helps that no crying babies nor loud snorers. Viking river cruises in Europe reserves its trans Atlantic flights through United. We are scheduled to fly United business class in April 2027 when we take our 4th Viking river cruise in 4 consecutive years. Wife says that next time we fly business on United, she gets the odd number row window seat, and me the even number row behind.

The plane arrived on time, and since it was an overnight flight, they gave a complimentary blanket and neck pillow, both of which were incredibly comfy. United also provided numerous food and drink services. First they brought out snacks, which were high quality cheese and crackers. After, they brought out meals, where you go to choose from chicken, beef or pasta. I chose chicken, which was a chicken polenta. I don't like polenta to begin with, so I didn't like the meal, but the people next to me had the other options, which looked very good. After a few hours, they gave everyone sandwiches, which were my favorite. Definitely high quality airplane food. To finish off the flight, they did breakfast, which tasted pretty good. Drinks were served with every meal. The best part was the in flight entertainment. The screens in front of me were equipped with dozens of free movies, free services for TV like Apple TV and Hulu, and even an interactive flight tracker. The flight attendants were really nice as well. Would definitely fly United again!

The real frustration? American Airlines refused to refund our $160 for a service they chose not to provide. We were told the passes are good for a year, but we don't travel frequently and purchased them specifically for that layover. After several contacts with Customer Relations, we received plenty of apologies and explanations about the fine print--but no refund. $160 may not be a significant amount to a large airline, but it is significant to customers who deliberately chose to spend that money for an experience they never received. Buyer beware: You can pay $160 for Admirals Club access, be denied entry, and still be denied a refund. That's a disappointing way to treat customers.

All the flights were on-time. The cabin was clean enough, but I'll refrain from making a comment regarding some of the customers who fly on Cathay Pacific and their cleanliness. Cathay has some of the best airplane food, I usually hate the food but their food is good. And every meal comes with Haagen Dazs, so that is a plus. Leg room was sufficient which is absolutely necessary for a 15 hour flight to HK. Customer service was friendly. So just based off first impressions, Cathay gets a passing grade. The snacks were the usual fare and Helene and I purchased sandwiches on the way top the airport so we had a light but satisfying dinner. Plenty of coffee and water whcih keeps me happy on this semi-quick flight. We also enjoyed a couple of movies we haven't seen so all was good... The flight staff was excellent!!! The pilot kept us briefed the whole way as we hit some bumpy spots and the flight attendants were wonderful always checking in on the passengers. (I am the bigger drinker.) We were fed dinner and breakfast on the leg to IST. The only kinda disappointment is their lounge at SFO. They use The Club SFO which is all the way in Terminal 1. I honestly don't know how long it takes to walk between T1 and International, but I heard they used to allow access to the United Polaris lounge? The Club is included in priority pass and I've been there a million times, so we just skipped the lounge. ANA's contract lounge United Polaris and United Club were both horrific and embarrassing. Boarding was on-time and merely a photo was needed to board. As our plane was merely 1/3 full, boarding was quick and we left ahead of schedule. Service started with a pre-departure beverage and we were given a couple amuse bouches for the late night departures. Heavy snacks are available at any time. Flew out on the original Boeing 777-300ER and it was fine. All the seats face forward and wifi is complimentary for Business class passengers. Apparently ANA sends out a voucher via email...I didn't find mine maybe because I booked via United? The seat itself is lieflat and forward facing. The screen is touchscreen and can be also controlled by the remote. There is a reading lamp too. The seat includes a mattress topper along with a super comfortable blanket and pillow. Service throughout the flight was world class. A meal was served 2.5 hours prior to landing. Opted for the Japanese option which included a wide variety of appetizers along with a main course of steamed fish served with a side of steam rice and miso soup.
