I loved that they had so many vegetarian options - that's rare. There was a normal veggie burger, a mega-stuffed portabella mushroom sandwich, and a Beyond Meat burger. With a couple of us there, we tried a the mushroom and the beyond burger. From what I heard, the mushroom sandwich was good. In terms of the beyond, I think they probably didn't cook it properly. Beyond-meat is very meat-like, and so you're supposed to cook them as such. Instead, they kind of flattened this out one and seemingly fried it. It wasn't horrible, but I've had it prepared differently elsewhere and it was much better. The sides were really good with the fries, cheese curds, etc. Probably the best part of the meal. Drove all the way here. The greatest thing is Yelp has a waiting list feature now. When we arrived, we asked if they received the waitlist notification. They said excitedly, yeah! We have been waiting for you and have a table for you! We felt so happy :D We also tried the Gumption hard cider, Spotted Cow beer, and funky monkey milkshake. The hard cider is pretty good. Almost like the Angry Orchard crisp apple. The Spotted Cow beer is so so. The milkshake doesn't have a lot of peanut butter and banana taste because the vanilla ice cream and rum taste take over. If greasy, unhealthy food is what you are craving this is the place for you! Have been here a few times over the years but never got around to writing a review. After having another good meal here finally going to do what I should have before. One of their catches is they have peanuts where you can throw the shells on the floor. They use to deliver them via bomber planes that would then dump the peanuts down a shoot. This visit they didn't use them so maybe they are phasing that out. This place is traditional bar fare. We got the frickles, cheese curds, and burgers. The frickles (fried pickles) were good but not great. Breading was a little heavy. Cheese curds were as light as fried cheese could be. Burgers were nice and juicy, definitely a 5 napkin affair. This is one of my regular stops whenever I go to Milwaukee. The best burger place in the world. (in my opinion) From beginning to end, AJ Bombers is an experience. Sure there is usually a wait, but there's a reason for that. The tables are classic wooden tables with random drawings and initials from past visitors, and you get peanuts rocketed to your table, where you can just push all of the shells onto the floor! Literally, the best feeling in the world. But the food, that's where AJ is killing it. The burgers are all amazing, I especially like getting them with a fried egg, avocado, and crispy onions. The egg oozes out of the burger and the combo with the avocado give it a beautiful burst of flavor. The cheese curds are to die for and the poutine is so bomb. Even the shakes are amazing. Literally everything here is amazing (unless you have peanut allergies...then gg). Your above average burger place. Service can be a hit or miss which makes me hesitate every time I think about going there. We have ordered from here on several occasions and it never fails our order gets prepared wrong. We will order bacon cheeseburgers nothing special about that and either they put it on the wrong bun. The burger is not cooked all the way. They will give us onion strings instead of fries. I can't quite figure out why people rave about this place. Its not that its bad, but it certainly isn't worth the 1+ wait my friends sat through. We came in on a Saturday night, and, expecting a wait, agreed to the 45-60 minute window we were quoted. We came back after about 45 minutes at a bar next door, and then waited another 20 or so minutes to be seated. To be fair, we were quote about an hour, and it took about that long. However, we would have been seated sooner except a lady with another party kept complaining to the hostess about the wait. It seemed the hostess finally caved and let them combine our table to be with another while we waited for another table to finish, be cleared, and then set up. When we were finally seated, everything went pretty well; we ordered our burgers and poutine to share as an app. The poutine took about 20 minutes or so, and was really vary good. After finishing the app, we then waited about 40 minutes for our food to be brought out to us. 40 minutes for a hamburger is a long time, especially in a relatively small restaurant with an even smaller menu. I'm not sure what they were doing in the kitchen, but making burgers seemed to be low on the list of priorities. The burgers themselves were ok, but more what I would describe as a fast food type, kinda like what you would get a 5 guys. The "bomber sauce" they use is very good and goes really well with the burgers. The fries and the tots were great, well seasoned and very crispy. Lastly, the service wasn't great. I already mentioned the hostess quietly reassigning our table to accommodate a jerky customer, and then there was our waitress. It isn't that she was rude, in fact she was very polite. Its more that she kept forgetting/messing things up. I asked for my burger to be on a pretzel bun, but it was brought out with a regular. She only refilled our drinks during our 60 minute wait for food twice, and we had to remind her to bring out the custard that came with 2 of the meals we ordered. Overall the food was ok with less than great service. I just wasn't impressed, and I'm sure Milwaukee has better burgers. read more

AJ Bombers seems like a pretty cool place. It has a full bar as well as booths to sit at. They have a cool paging system where you get a text on your phone when they're ready to seat you. The wait time for us on a Friday night was about 30-minutes. While waiting, I noticed that a couple of servers had were wearing knee braces. Hopefully it wasn't from slipping on the peanut shell-riddled floor, in which any case, the kids enjoyed stomping and crunching on. We ordered some cheese curds and for my main eats, I got the "Bomber Burger" which had American cheese, lettuce, tomato & Bomber sauce and a giant stuffed mushroom. Choice was to have the mushroom grilled or deep-fried. With the suggestion of the waitress, I went with deep-fried. The burger overall was pretty big.. I would say it was about a 6-oz meat patty with decent toppings. The deep-fried mushroom, I wasn't feeling it, and overall, the burger was A-OK. The burger was cooked too "well" and not a "medium" that I was hoping for. Cheese curds were good though, and the kids liked their grilled cheeses. On a small note, I was looking for a place that was catered toward kids and apparently, AJ Bomber's resulted in my Google search efforts. I wouldn't say this place is kid UNfriendly, but I don't see how this place sets itself apart, in terms of being kid-friendly or not, to any other restaurant. The place features a rocker/biker theme with the stickers and writing all over the walls. There are the classic peanuts available and shells on the floor- perfect with beer! The burgers itself weren't too big, but size doesn't matter always! However, I wasn't too blown away by any aspect of the burgers. The buns were just a white french bread that was spectacular. The patties were thin and the bacon on the Milwaukee was hard. I also ordered the onion strings and the ketchup mayo sauce served with it was more mayo than ketchup, so not very balanced. The onion strings had decent flavor, but were really small thin! I also ordered the seasoned fries.. I love fries and I hate leaving fries uneaten, but not today. OK, full disclosure: We went here because we saw it on Travel Channel and wanted to experience peanuts being "bombed" on our table. Neither my wife or I have ever had curds before. A bit "gummier" than I expected, but I thought they were pretty good. My wife... not so much. She got a pint of Spotted Cow, which she loved. My Schlitz... not so much. The burgers: She got the Milwaukee Burger and loved it, though the onions got a little overwhelming for her. For me, the Colonel Mustard! The beef was seasoned so well, the quality was amazing, and the playfulness of the onion strings and pretzel bun were the perfect touches. In town for business from Texas and wanted something a bit different than Mexican food. AJ Bombers has good reviews and it was MUCH cheaper than the restaurant at the hotel I am staying at. I did the lazy approach and ordered with Uber Eats so my review is based off a meal that wasn't hot. Yes I got lucky with a bike riding Uber Eats individual. Not used to that at all. So thought process was when in Wisconsin you have cheese curds?! They were pretty good. I think they would've been crispier and better at the restaurant so I say they were delicious. They had a chipotle ranch that I enjoyed as well. The Milwaukee burger wasn't my favorite. Just lack of flavor I suppose. I prefer bold flavors so it could be just me. The tator tots needed a bit more salt or flavor. The skin on fries were delicious but a tad bit too much salt. Don't laugh - I promise I'm not super hard to please! I've long heard a lot of hype, bordering on cult-like devotion, on social media in Milwaukee about AJ Bombers. I have been there twice and would simply say it's "OK". The atmosphere is fine, albeit unremarkable. The service both times was adequate. The french fries are sub-par compared to a lot of other places in town. The first time I went, I had a portabella burger that tasted fine but was really soggy. The second time I got a regular cheeseburger that was decent. I'd give it three stars, but I've got to knock it down a star because I had on one of the visits what I still rank as the worst buffalo wings I've ever had in my life.
