I give this local bar 3 stars, the service is slow and spotty. You'll have to wait at least 5 minutes to get your order in from simple beer to appetizer. The bartenders are really nice and friendly overall. It seems very understaff unfortunately. Such a small bar so it's easily packed so that's the downside. Only slot machines for games, tvs everywhere which is nice for bucks season. So loud to hard to have a conversation! read more

The Loaded Slate is perfectly fine as a place to grab a meal leaving the arena (like we were when we stopped). You won't find anything too radical here...its bar food with some fun twists. They had a great brunch menu (at least on the weekends,) and I had a black bean and egg burrito with their version of hash browns (more like a fried potato pancake/tater tot patty). The brunch menu was pretty much the going rate - $9 to maybe $11 Our server was really nice despite seeming pretty busy and kept beverages filled. she also told us the artwork on the wall was done by a former employee...cool! Speaking of artwork...if you have a very bad doodling habit (not speaking for myself, of course, it's a "friend" I'm talking about:) you will enjoy colored chalk and the chalkboard that comprises the center of the bar tables. Lastly...and this is just an oddity not really a criticism but why were they playing a medley of 90s favorites when it seemed like the clientele was all 20-somethings? I had a great time here on a weeknight. We chose our seats and the bartender/waitress helped us right away. They have good prices for happy hour selection during the week and there are different weekday deals. I remember the wings from Wingfest a couple years ago, and forgot how great they are! They didn't disappoint this time either. The dry-rub on the Famous Triple-Baked Wings is magnificent- savory with a pinch of sweet. You can order up to two kinds of wings. The wings were crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. My partner ordered the Loaded Slate Burger and it hit the spot for his burger craving. I appreciate that the waitress checked on us for a final call before happy hour ended. The tables are spaced far enough according to social distancing rules, except I felt almost back-to-back with a customer that came in to play the casino game at the bar while I was at my table. I just dined here this morning for brunch. The bloodies are delicious and fun with all of the fixings, the food was bland and mediocre (I had the wisco breakfast burrito, my friends had the burger, Korean ribeye Bowl, chicken tacos). While the food wasn't great, the reason I'm writing this review is because of the rude service from the waitress (didn't catch her name but it was the blonde one). The menu says the breakfast burrito comes with pico de gallo and sour cream on top. When it came without either of those things, I mentioned to the waitress that I thought it was supposed to come with those toppings. She copped an attitude and said "they come on the side" without any apology, then didn't offer to get them for me, so I had to ask "can I get them please?" Then while I was waiting for the pico and sour cream for my flavorless burrito, she was handing a beer across the table and spilled it on my burrito. Again, no apology and just walked away. We got our check and asked for 4 boxes and she only brought 2 large boxes and a small box. When I asked her for a large box, she responded "well I'd have to go downstairs to get it." WHAT???? 1) it is literally your job. 2) given that there are other people eating, you are going to have to go downstairs to get boxes anyways at some point. 3) why didn't you bring the right amount of boxes in the first place? I really don't understand where her attitude came from and, as a first timer, can't say I'll be back and would not recommend it to anyone. The pandemic has been hard on everyone, as has inflation, so when I go out and spend money, I want it to be a pleasant experience with service that at least don't get sassy with me when I ask for the things that are supposed to come with my meal. Isn't that what I'm going out and paying for? To note, I have friends in the service industry and so I'm always compassionate about what they have to put up with and go out of my way to be friendly and say thank you for everything. I'm really confused why she copped such an attitude when it wasn't even busy and we had been nothing but nice (let alone spend quite a bit of money on drinks and food). By the end, we couldn't wait to leave with how uncomfortable she made things. TLDR: Please train your waitstaff to be polite and to do the job they're getting paid to do. I've been to The Loaded Slate several times during the bar hours, and after things get blurry overnight I would absolutely recommend stopping in the next morning for brunch. This is some of the best brunch food I've had, with a great array of choices from skillets to burritos, chicken tenders to sandwiches and several more. Since I usually go on the safe route, I recently ordered chicken tenders. I was expecting something out of a freezer bag which would be fine, but I got homemade chicken strips with a Cajun seasoning coating, which were then lightly breaded and fried to a perfect crisp. The inside was still juicy while the outside had the perfect level of crunch. My friends got a loaded omelette, a skillet and a burrito. The skillet looked excellent, with a cast iron pan and a wooden base served with warm tortillas on the side. The omelette was loaded, as it's name would imply, and the burrito was massive. My only qualm about the burrito is that it was slathered in sour cream from the kitchen, and given its size, that might make reheating a little difficult because it is unlikely that you will be able to finish it in one sitting. My goodness, all of this writing and I haven't even gotten to the drinks. While I've never ordered a Bloody Mary here, I do know that they have an absolutely *loaded* Bloody Mary which comes with a slider, cheese curds, and other toppings to actually make it a meal. They also have mimosa pitchers which are for two people but delicious enough to get down yourself. This is an excellent restaurant to go to for brunch, I can't recommend it enough. read more

Was walking by last night and decided to stop it. Good vibe for a Tuesday night. Sat down and it took a while before someone came up to us but eventually they did. We put our order in for food, cheese curds were nice and hot not to mention the wings were pretty good. The drink was pretty good and not on the weak side at all, seems to be a younger crowd. But overall it was good, not sure if I would stop in again but who knows :) The place is small when you get inside, but when you look from outside looks BIG however they have nice big windows to look out of which is nice. They also have seats outside which is good if you want to eat outside in the summer weather. What I didn't like was being asked to close the bill because our server was leaving for the night. Not sure if that's s common thing, but it was a first for me ..... so we were asked to close the bill because she was leaving for the night, but we could re-open a new one with the next server. It's an interesting concept. All the slate and chalk writings. A very young crowd resides here. My bloody mary was so salty that I simply could not choke it down -- good thing is our young little tank-topped in winter server was so sweet and kind enough to get me another drink instead and not charge me after trying to fix the first bloody mary. Absolutely the worst bouncer I've ever seen. Closed my tab and 3 seconds later the bouncer comes up like a tough guy saying "you gotta get the fuck outta here" I replied yeah we are leaving i just closed my tab my wife has an inch of her drink she's finishing. He replied "nah fuck you bro i don't play that shit" "get the fuck out" Then precedes pulls my stool out from underneath me attempting to drop me to the floor. It was my second drink all night so obviously he had failed. Mind you there's 18 other people in the bar and they had just called last call at 1:42 am. After this i said "dude just chill for two seconds that was absolutely unnecessary" she was finishing her drink we are leaving. We then started walking out and he threw the ice from my wife's drink at me as we walked out. He then chases us out of the bar and throws an entire pitcher of water at us outside as we walk down the street. I'm very tempted to file a police report. I've never been harassed so harshly in the bar as we were leaving. Let alone by an employee. What an absolute disgrace. I get there's drunken idiots in this town. But we're sober patrons calmly leaving and we're faced with this Harassment from a man that obviously felt too short so had to be "tough guy" Unbelievable. read more

I had a coupon to use for 25 dollars worth of food. They honored it with no issue. I stopped in on a Friday, it wasnt packed at all. We ordered all apps. So we ordered a couple orders of jumbo cheese sticks, french fries, chicken wings (BBQ and Plain) and cheese curds. Lastly, we had the chicken quesadilla minus the mushrooms. Its smaller on the inside then what I imagined. It is big enough to get the job done. We had a fairly large part of (6). We sat down at two separate tables at the entrance. The interior is dark and filled with sports memorabilia. The tables have chalk boards built in. This kept my kids occupied until the food came! The food was really good. I was surprised. I have one complaint. It was a Friday and I am allergic to seafood, Im sure I tasted the food and it was cooking (fried) in the same grease as the fish. I stopped eating the fries right away. Only the fries tasted like this so I dont know? Besides that I had a great experience. They have multiple nights of the week when they have specials. I would love to go back to try other specials that they have. Oh yea I tried to go about 2 weeks ago on a Sunday and we were told that they kitchen closed at 5pm on a Sunday......plan ahead, also parking is a royal pain. read more

Little double is the best bartender on this side of the Mississippi!!!!!!!!! They have delicious bloody Mary's and brunch food

Four of us came here for dinner before an Admirals game. It was busy but not packed or crazy. It took at least 15 minutes (it certainly felt like longer) before the server came to our table, and that was just to ask if she could leave the ketchup caddy here. She had been to the two tables next to us several times and didn't even look our way. I suggested that since we wanted service, she was welcome to leave the caddy, as well as bring drinks and menus. Things were better after that. The food was....fine. if you've read my other reviews you know that "fine" makes me mad. We have so many amazing food joints in Milwaukee that I hate wasting money and time on anything other than great. My pulled pork sandwich tasted like chicken broth and had almost no BBQ sauce. The fries here are always tiny potato nibs. No one likes tiny fries. My friends concurred that the food was fine. If you need to grab a bite in this part of town, choose ANY of the other restaurants within spitting distance. Ugly's, Harp, the new place Cantina can't be worse. read more

Our work team was indecisive on where to go for Downtown Dining Week, and after 20 mins of reviewing the menu's of almost all of the restaurants we finally decided on Loaded Slate. The menu items seemed to have something for each member of our work team. It's only 5 of us but hey lol. Also let me add that parking can be a bit of a hassle so be patient when coming to the area, it's a lot of construction. I dropped my coworkers off at the door and parked a several blocks away. Once I arrived I already knew what I wanted to order after 20 mins of looking at menus in the office. I decided to go with the Yellowfin Tuna Brushetta which was amazing. The tuna was seared to perfection and marinated in a garlic pepper rub, and topped with fresh pico de gallo and parmesan cheese, olive oil and balsamic drizzle. This was excellent, I would order this again and again, it was just that good. I love the flavor combinations going on and the textures of the foods all complementing each other. Crisp, clean, crunchy, flavorful, etc. Next was the Moroccan Chicken Kabob, which was marinated Moroccan chicken served with a warm pita, tzatziki sauce and a side of tator tots. The kabob was aromatic and flavorful, pita was good as well, and the tator tots were excellent. Lastly, for dessert I ordered the deep fried oreo which was a double stuffed oreo coated with a crunchy cookie batter, deep fried and drizzled with chocolate syrup, served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. This was an excellent ending. Not to sweet, yet crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. All in all I had a great lunch experience for Downtown Dining Week and would definitely patronize again. read more

I will warn you by stating that I am a little biased (shout out to my sister, the best bartender in Milwaukee). That being said, I enjoy the Slate. It's a smaller place but you can play jenga and they play good music. I went in for brunch yesterday, and I had a killer bloody mary, and a so-so veggie breakfast burrito with cheesy hashbrowns. The hashbrowns were great, but I don't suppose it is too difficult to make something delicious when you add a hunk of cheese to it. The veggie burrito was fresh but I couldn't put my finger on what was missing until I was halfway through... oh yes, it was the eggs! =/ My friend ordered the grilled cheese and did not really enjoy it. My other friend got the Slamberry wrap with waffle fries and said it was really good. Like I said, I know the bartender, so I received great service. However, it was not too busy so I'm sure you will also get a bartender's undivided attention. Once it gets nice out they will have outdoor seating, so I'm sure it will be busier then. I used to love Loaded Slate and have been here more times than I can count. Been really unfortunate slip in quality of food, cleanliness, everything you'd want in a bar in the last 6 months. Last night unfortunately may be my last visit other than the occasional 11pm visit for a bottle of beer. The food used to be awesome here, last night it became clear they have changed their ingredient quality. My old favorite, chicken rolls were soggy and just real off, sliders were obviously poorly thawed frozen patties, wings were not the wings I used to enjoy. I'd eat the fries again. The thing that really did it for me is the draft beer, the lines are definitely dirty. Got a shorts IPA I'd had elsewhere and it tasted awful, tried to wash it down with a Guinness, didn't taste like any Guinness I've ever had(I've drank a lot of Guinness in my day, humble brag). I really hope Loaded slate recovers, great space and I have seen glimpses of amazing. For the time being I will be hanging out on the south end of Old World Third Street. read more

I got what I deserved for disregarding the low Yelp rating when I decided to come here for happy hour the other day. First of all, "half-price apps" is misleading. It sounds like a fine deal, but the apps available for half-price also come in smaller portions. I'm no math wiz, but if I'm paying half and then getting about half, that is not a savings. That's just paying less and getting less. That's directly proportional. But that's the least of this place's worries. I'm primarily traumatized by the food. We ordered what I believe was called Third Street Nachos and they were the most bizarre interpretation of a basic bar food that I've ever seen: A pile of stale tortilla chips topped with raw sliced mushrooms, cold and uncooked chopped onion and red pepper, a few chunks of lukewarm chicken, a blob of nacho cheese and what appeared to be a sour cream drizzle. The mushrooms were downright jarring. I say that as someone who likes mushrooms, but just... not on top of nachos, you know? The two other apps we ordered -- sliders and buffalo chicken rolls -- were not memorable or particularly warm, but at least they were inoffensive compared to the shroom nachos. Beer prices were steeper than I expected for a happy hour deal, but maybe that's just nature of being out on Old World Third. The Loaded Slate may be a fine bar, if you're looking for a place to grab a drink and you happen to be in this part of town. I can't speak to that, as it was a Tuesday night and we were two of four people in the entire place. But I would encourage you to explore other options if you're looking for a bite on Old World Third. Unless shroom nachos sound like your thing. read more

Welcome to the Loaded Salt... I was with Heather C... and really she summed it up quite nicely. I have to say that their happy hour specials were pretty decent with $3 tap beers and $3 apps. That's why the 2 stars. BUT - Holy salt Batman! I did not get the aforementioned Salty Tots... I got the chips as a side - and WOWSA.. SALT LICK. YIKES. Who knows what happened - but boy oh boy they did not skimp on the salt. Our server was very kind and sweet - AND the only one. They weren't properly prepared for an event night so our food came out cold. Everything looked great and the ambiance was pretty AOK. I must have caught them on an off night (the first Thursday of Summerfest); as my experience was nothing of the 'friendly' sort. I stopped in with two friends to check out TLS and by midway through the meal, determined I would not return. A brief summary: 1. Our server wasn't exactly welcoming or friendly. If you want people to spend money in your establishment, even faking like you care would go a long way. She seemed more interested in the music selection (TODAY'S HOT POP HITS VOL. 74). I get the feeling this place pops off on a Friday or Saturday night, but I'm not sure TLS knows what the theme would be. Are they a dance club? A sports bar? A bar with a chalkboard theme? Pick one. That's not the fault of the wait staff, just a note for improvement. 2. Taco Bangers = grease party. These should be served with a side of Tums. Interestingly enough, I couldn't find these on the official menu; they were recommended by our server. 3. Burger selection: solid options (7) including black and blue, triple pepper, and a patty melt. The accompanying chips were a bit overcooked and I'm not sure a $2 charge for previously frozen fries or tots is necessary. 4. Beer: $1 PBR cans on Thursday is no joke. Despite those dollar PBRs, this -- like many of the establishments on OW3rd -- is just not my type of place. I'd like to be able to hear the conversation while not having to yell over club music on a dead Thursday evening. TLS seemingly markets their business to anyone and everyone -- Brewers/sports fans, weekend old world third street club-goers, businesses (catering), birthday/bachelor/bachelorette parties, families (?!?) -- without a clear plan of attack. In the end, it's trying to be a pub that thinks it is a club yet wants to be a sports bar while attempting to cater to everyone. Located one block from the Bradley Center, this is one of the best places to catch any Wisconsin games. With great happy hour specials, I love to stop in before any Bradley Center events and when you show your ticket.... the second drink is on them! I also think they do have great brunch and bloody marys. The staff is really nice and accommodating. There is a great atmosphere and plenty of space. I rented the back room out for an event and they gave us a great deal. It was a tad disorganized at times but they definitely worked with me throughout the night. A unique concept for a bar--chalk provided so you can see if your artistic ability increases while you drink! I went to The Loaded Slate on a Saturday afternoon. I feel bad for this place, as there is a lot of construction going on in the area and parking was difficult to find. However, as soon as we walked in, we were greeted by some staff who jokingly invited us to help them put up Christmas decorations. We declined, as all we wanted to do was drink beer. :) The bartender was very friendly but knew nothing about beer. I didn't think this could be possible, especially since beer is an essential element of the Milwaukeean's diet, right? I had initially asked her what porters or stouts they had in bottles or on tap? She replied that she didn't know much about beer because she doesn't drink it, but I could come around and look in the case if I wanted to. I have no problem with bars hiring young, cute, female bartenders, but could you teach them at least a few things about beer? It's a Milwaukee staple. I was so excited to try this place. In fact, I picked this place over other restaurants that sounded great out of the Downtown Dining week options. Definitely regretting my decision. We got a waiter, Hal, with a RIDICULOUS attitude. He acted like he was doing us a favor the entire time, never smiled or was polite. He probably noticed how angry I was by the end of our time so said a couple words for us to have a good day when we were leaving. The food was average, at best. The pina colada was AWFUL. The asparagus wrapped in bacon was tasty but that's about all that was good. The burger was just ok and the dessert was disgusting- a few Famous Amos-like chocolate chip mini cookies with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. I ate one mini-cookie and left the rest of it. I understand a place can't serve the best options on a limited-priced menu. But serving swill isn't acceptable either. The WORST part: My friend got the burger and didn't realize it had avacado in it. He's deathly allergic. He wasn't going to say anything and was just going to pay for it and not eat it. But I asked our waiter (who was too busy socializing at the bar) if he could please get us a new burger. We apologized over and over, my friend said he'd pay for both his burgers and explained his issue. The waiter took his burger, walked in the kitchen and probably didn't realize I could see him. He went in there, pointed at us repeatedly and used all these hand gestures and looked like he was really angry. He came out later with my friend's burger. My friend apologized again and thanked him. NOT ONE WORD from the waiter!!!! He didn't come by and refill waters, nothing the whole time. Last time I'll ever come here. On our first visit to the Loaded Slate, I ordered their chicken sandwich (a nice quality grilled chicken, which I really appreciate, by the way) with cranberry and fresh baby spinach plus provolone cheese, supposed to be served in a wheat wrap, but instead came on well-greased sourdough type bread without explanation. The sandwich, by default, came with chips, which were lightly dusted with Parmesan and herbs. I appreciated the combos of this sandwich, with the cranberry flavor and a bit of spinach for added oomph to keep me "strong to the finish". The bartender, a young brunette gal, was friendly and helpful, talking up the black and Bleu burger and their brunch. The Loaded Slate, at least on this Monday night, appeared to be popular with the college-aged crowd. The bar had a clean appearance and the patrons were low key. I would describe the place as primarily a bar, with some decent eats to be found. On our next visit, we tried some of the $3 apps including the sweet chili wings. We were given a sample of the sauce before ordering, and they were a hit with us. We also had the Rueben sticks, of which a version is available in many establishments in Milwaukee. These were fine. So we went here because we bought some gift certificates on restaurant.com, i know it's already a bad sign when a business needs to sell gift certificates to get customers. This should've been a red flag. I asked our waitress prior to ordering how these work because I didn't want any surprises. I asked you beforehand and now there;s been a systems change? Another table near us hears the conversation and also asks what the deal was because they have the same certificate. Then another table. So this seems to be a bait and switch tactic and we were not the only ones who fell for it. I can't imagine this was the first time and the waitress did not look new. Systems change..highly unlikely. Nice location, unfortunately construction is currently going on so it might be hard to locate for those not familiar with MKE's downtown. Solid beer selection and a good-sized menu. I went with the Buffalo Chicken sandwich and was very pleased. They put some sort of garlic seasoning on the bread, which was delicious, and I highly recommend getting the waffle fries. I went there for lunch today with my husband. The food is above average pub fare. Wait staff was very friendly. We order the Slate sticks for an appetizer with guiness mustard; they were very good. I had the loaded slate burger and the pub fries; I was very pleased with the quality of both. My husband's reuben was also very good. Bloody Mary's were good and only $6. Other than a very loud, drunk patron who came into the bar & grill early in our meal, it was a very pleasant dining experience. All hail the mighty Ultimate Bloody Mary!!! I went here this weekend for brunch and one of my girlfriends and I split the Ultimate Bloody Mary. Hands down amazing! We ended up coming back later Sunday night with my friend to grab a quick drink and the two brothers who were working taught us how to play bar dice too! I know I am from Wisconsin and I should know how to play lol. I think their names were Dakota and Allen they was super nice and friendly. read more

Went on a thursday evening, thought it looked dirty but you never know. The reuben rolls appetizer was greasy but delicious enough. Our entries, black and blue burger and black bean burger were disgusting. Just disgusting. Charred, the saddest slice of onion I've ever seen and a dried out hockey puck of a pretzel roll. The fries were good though as soon as the food was set in front of us we got a lot of old fryer grease smell. I kept having to remind myself I wasn't on water street. I was on the verge of giving a one star review, however I held back only due to the fact that our server was attentive. We dined in for the Fox 6 Dining week and upon reading over their menu, we were actually excited to go. We both started with their 'famous' loaded slate wings with spicy bbq sauce. They came out, somewhat burnt, and no sauce to say the least. The blue cheese sauce or whatever that was was completely tasteless as well. As we were still getting down the chicken wings (they come whole which I like), our entrees arrived. Go figure. I ordered their chicken club sandwich. From the looks of it, the sandwich looked promising. It has a chipotle mayo, lettuce, tomato, and red onion. When I placed the top bun on top, I knew I was in for another disappointment. The bun was super hard, almost like cardboard. The sandwich was flavorless as well, and I had about 30 percent more bun leftover as the chicken slid out. Chipotle mayo? Again, so flavor, and no spice. My coworker order the same wings, same experience. He ordered the reuben panini. As he said it was large in size, and it was, he also said it had no flavor. The dessert came and we both ordered the brownie and ice cream. After all, the choice were ice cream, brown ice cream, or brownie. The ice cream was hard as a rock, again flavorless. Who serves flavorless vanilla ice cream?! I tried to cut into their 'melt in your mouth' brownie, and could not even get a fork through it! I picked it up and the thing was burnt underneath. You had to be kidding me? We both walked out and both expressed that we wanted to get that taste out of our mouth, the burnt brownie that is. We both left about 80 percent of the dessert on the plate. I would not recommend this place. Sure, for a beer maybe, but the food? No way. read more

We went there on Sunday for a bloody mary. We ordered the ultimate bloody mary, this is big enough for two, and tons of garnish to share and brought some home. Sliders, wings, onion rings, poppers, breaded mushrooms, olives, mozzarella sticks, and a tall can of beer. Delicious bloody, the menu looked good. Great food, good music, hot girls, decent guys (girls win, sorry lads). Definitely a fun place to go in Milwaukee especially if you're trying to get your rumple fix on. This is probably the worst place to go if you want your food in a timely manner. I came here with my family and no one greets you when you walk in. You have to figure out that you have to seat yourself, no big deal. Three groups came in after us. After about 15 minutes, someone finally comes but SERVES US LASTS LMAO. idk how they figured out who got menus and drinks first but I find it hilarious that we got served last after getting there first. It takes about 45-50 minutes to get your food - and it's not even busy. DO NOT COME HERE IF YOU ARE IN A RUSH. read more
