Ramen joints in Southeast Connecticut are few and far between and AJ Noodle Bar fills the gap with some solid offerings in a very casual space. The service is very attentive and pleasant and the food is fresh and well prepared. It may be hard to find as it's tucked away in a corner of a strip mall, but clearly a well-known local establishment. If you're in the area it's a reliable option worth the stop.

Loving this addition to Old Saybrook, AJ Noodle Bar! Before, the closest ramen or bubble tea place was in Middletown. We were greeted by a super sweet woman (I'm assuming she's the owner?) when we entered and guided us to choose our seats. It felt very welcoming. AJ Noodle Bar's menu is simple and has all the classics gyozas, pork buns, rice dishes, stir-fry, ramen and more. We tried the Vegetable Ramen and Bulgogi Fries with Taro and Thai Coffee Bubble Tea. Everything was delicious. The ramen was a big serving of noodles with fried tofu, zucchini, mushrooms, carrots and bok choy. The Bulgogi Fries were a big hit too and highly give them a try. We ordered it with the mayo and spicy sauce on the side. Share it or have it as your meal, it's very filling and satisfying. The bubble tea was so good, the boba lightly sweeten and boba cooked perfectly. AJ Noodle Bar is tucked in the plaza with the AAA office and the Paperback Cafe on Main Street. Love that it's in the plaza because of the parking lot! The restaurant is small inside, but is very busy. There is bar like seating at the window looking out to the parking lot and tables that could hold 4-6 people. On spring or summer days, there is outdoor seating too. It does seem they do a lot of takeout orders and you can order online. If I am in the Old Saybrook, I would love to stop by again to try more. I can't wait to try some of there desserts like Green Tea Tiramisu (we were too full this trip)!

Perfect spot to grab lunch after shopping at the local outlet malls! The place is small and cozy and there is plenty of parking outside. Our server was very kind and the food came out very quickly. Their bulgogi ramen was absolutely delicious. Definitely recommend AJ Noodle Bar!

Everything about this place was amazing, it's nice and cozy like a cottage. The people who work there are pretty friendly and will help with anything you need. The food was really lovely and I'm glad I was able to visit.

A solid spot to get ramen and rice bowl in the area. It's a small cozy spot and our group of 7 was able to push 2 tables together during lunch. If you have more than 7 people I would recommend calling ahead though. We had the Tonkutsu ramen, beef rice bowl, fried gyoza, takoyaki and fried shumai. The broth and ramen itself was just a tad bland but the charsui pork was very flavorful and tender. The beef rice bowl was good and really flavorful. My daughter enjoyed the gyoza and shumai. The takoyaki was a miss for me. Too much dough and not enough tako pieces. Overall, the food and service was good enough to earn a 4 star from me.

Is it the best ramen? No. This is also a ramen shop in the burbs... of Connecticut... keep that in mind. However with that said, if you're craving a decent bowl of hot ramen or rice bowl, AJ Noodle Bar will hit the spot. Cozy small shop, with a handful of tables, the hostess/waitress was attentive and efficient. -Tonkutsu ramen is going to be the better option (not the bestest broth but quick fix) -Bulgogi ramen could be your back-up option, the fatty beef is good -beef rice bowl was delicious -chicken rice bowl was a bit dry but still decent -gyoza pan fried was ok -takoyaki is meh... crunchy but not a lot of tako... you can have better ones elsewhere -fried shumai, kids liked it Had a Thai Bubble tea, Thai coffee boba - both were pretty darn good. Nice small, cozy little nook of a restaurant. Little hard to find from the road, but visible clearly when you get into the parking lot. Staff were very friendly and helpful. We kind of knew what we wanted as we had looked online. So it didn't take too long for us to order. Food was prepared quickly and came out all at once. We had ordered two types of Ramen, the Miso and the Tonkotsu. Both were delicious, although we favored the Tonkotsu one more. Portions were good as it filled us up. We ordered the House fried rice to try that as well. It was good, but we had to bring home the leftover. Compared to other Asian style restaurants we have been to, the fried rice was one of the better ones we had tasted. We also ordered the Chashu rice bowl, which was a meal in itself! Definitely a nice find, and a place we will go to again.

My fiancé and I are huge ramen people so we were really excited to try the noodle bar on our most recent weekend getaway. The restaurant is tucked away in the back of the plaza, but the outdoor dining area was really nice and if it wasn't blazing hot we probably would've opted to eat outside. We ordered the Pork Buns, Miso Ramen, and Tonkotsu Ramen. You were able to order from a QR code on the table which was convenient and our food came out relatively quickly. Everything tasted great, and I'm usually not a huge fan of a Miso base but I really really liked their broth!! The restaurant quickly filled up as we were sitting down so you can tell they can get pretty busy around lunch/ dinner time but we would definitely come back when we visit the area again.

Fantastic!!! I live in suburban Boston, visiting family in CT. AJ Noodle Bar puts in lots of effort to prepare the fully home-made tonkatsu ramen that I ordered. It was great! My folks had stir fry w/ noodles, whose "lightness" and incredible taste were really notable. I am excited to return again and again to try the other ramen dishes too. (Also: ask them about their pork belly used for the ramen - melt in your mouth). I wish them much success! read more

I had my first meal at AJ's tonight. They opened two weeks ago and the place seems to already be getting a crowd at meal time. The owner and staff members are SO nice and came around while we were eating. It's casual- you order at the counter and then they bring you your food to the table. I had the beef bulgogi ramen, and we also shared the pork buns and agedashi. Everything was piping hot and delicious and so flavorful. The bowls of soup are huge portions. This will definitely be a local go-to for a quick bite to eat. We can't wait to come back! read more

The food is obviously frozen and not fresh. Flavor is lacking and below average. Probably better off getting some frozen prepared food from the supermarket but at least AJ's is heated up for you. read more

I have only ordered takeout, but have found the preparation was Excellent...in all aspects! Ingredients are fresh and quickly prepared. Broth, noodles, veggies and meats are all presented in separate containers! Once you add them all together in a bowl.....the result is amazing! Fantastic Experience!! There were two seating options at the Aj Noodle Bar; Inside or out. The inside was nice, maybe about 6 seats, and the outside about the same, maybe less. We decided the outside would be perfectly breezy. We looked around the menu which was neither too full or too small. We got ready to order. The waiter was very friendly, and was not just interested in taking our orders, but engaging in conversation with us. There were four of us there and the drinks we decided on were two Japanese sodas (lychee flavored) as well as a Lychee Refresher and Matcha Boba. The Japanese sodas were sweeter than expected, but they weren't a bad kind of sweet. We were told they're pretty popular, especially with kids because of both the sweetness and the way you eat them, which is with a marble. (Somewhat confusing but you understand it when you order it.) The Matcha Boba was delicious and the Lychee Refresher was described as perfectly sweet, (and really did taste like lychees) and fantastic. The Pad Tai was a 2.5 out of 5 on the spice scale, (or a medium amount of spice) and described as "perfectly flavored". The Tom Yum Noodle Soup was "densely aromatic and intensely flavorful." and it "felt like food your meant to eat." . The spring rolls were also tasty if a little bit on the oily side. Next up is the Shrimp Tempura which came with rice and the choice of soup/salad. It was "Perfectly crisp without a hint of oil. The Tempura vegetables retained their crispness also without a hint of oil." The last order was Miso Ramen was "Perfect in every way, whether it was the delicious pork or heartwarming broth, the flavor was top notch." The people who ran the establishment put gallons of effort and love into their dishes, just ask! We will be coming back 100%!! Thank you for the experience! read more

I visited for the first time this week. Not liking spicy foods I asked for recommendations. I was showed what not to choose and went from there. I ordered the Seafood Ramen from the picture, OMG what a delightful taste experience. Corn, baby bok choi, seaweed, bean sprouts and Ramen in a delicious broth topped with 2 scallops and 4 shrimp. The food is delicious! For lunch I had a shrimp Bento box which had veggies, rice, shrimp, salad and Goya's. The flavor was great and the portion was a good size. I also took home the curry noodle soup which was so flavorful with chicken. The woman behind the counter was so friendly. Run don't walk to try this new gem on the shoreline. I had not ordered ahead. The food was ready in about five minutes. There is a lovely sidewalk with tables and umbrellas or you can eat inside. Give them a try. I thought the prices were very fair and the food was out of this world. Can't wait to go back to try something else! read more

I had researched AJ's before coming. We are relatively new to the area and I am trying to find fave go to spots. This will now be added to the reg go to list. It is that good. The place is a hidden gem, so cute/clean and the staff is wonderful and attentive. We dove in right away w/shumai, gyoza, and pork buns. All fast, hot and well prepared. Even though the dumplings/snacks were fried they were light. No losers here! We went for the seafood ramen which was also fresh light in a miso broth. As another reviewer commented, the tender baby bok choy was fresh and great w/seaweed and corn. We love pork belly and bulgogi so that order will be next time-no doubt. We considered ordering to go for later... Finally we finished with the AJ house fried rice, also flavorful. I also treated myself to a passion fruit refresher. Perfect for the unseasonably warm day we had! The summary: I could eat here daily... so happy to not have to go to NYC or Boston. Just go! You will find something you like! read more

Excellent Asian food! We tried a variety of dishes including Japanese Ramen, Chinese stir fried noodles, pork char siu bun, and Hibachi chicken, everything was amazing! They are also great with allergies. My kids have peanuts and egg allergies and that's why we usually don't eat out at Asian restaurants. But they were great about it and my kids enjoyed their food with no problem. read more

We have gotten take out a 2-3 occasions and it's all been so good. They're really friendly and food was prompt. I'm not totally sold on the corn in some dishes but maybe that's just me. The others in my group were fine with it. They have a small seating area so you can eat there also. It's a good local spot! read more

Wow! This place is a hidden gem by any standard! The food was so fresh tasting and delicious. Their house fried rice was some of the best I've ever had and the seafood ramen was out of this world. And I have no idea how they got our order out so quickly! The entire staff was sincerely friendly as well. Do yourself a favor and go (you won't be sorry)! read more

Excellent Chinese restaurant. Love the food, the environment and the service. I normally eat at non routine hours so I have the place all to myself, which is great. Beside the routine Chinese food you find in other Chinese restaurants, they carry other dishes that are tasty. I highly recommend this restaurant. read more

I will absolutely be coming back here again! The service was friendly, the food was very tasty, exactly what I would expect when ordering at any other well known noodle spot. Their takoyaki was on point, the bubble tea was perfect and not overly sweet and the chashu in their ramen was incredible. Great Ramen experience! I have been here with family 3x and done takeout 1x so far. The bulgogi Ramen has an amazing complex broth and the perfect amount of everything. The curry soup was spicy and packed super carefully in separate containers so nothing got soggy. Veggie Ramen had the best baby bok choi and crunchy vegetables and tofu. This is real good authentic ramen and I am so happy to have it locally. Further staff and owner are pleasant and fun and there is a good vibe through the place. It's a little spartan inside with bench seating and I hope they get a wine/beer license at some point, but this is a new favorite place for me and everyone at my house. read more

This is a very new restaurant. The lovely staff informed us that they have only been open for a month or so. I ordered the chicken fried rice and my fiancé ordered a noodle soup. We were both blown away and how good the food is. We will be returning frequently. The pricing is reasonable and portion size is generous. I highly recommend this restaurant. read more

AJ Noodle Bar! The place was in Middletown. It felt very welcoming. AJ Noodle Bar's menu is simple and has all the classics gyozas, pork buns, rice dishes, stir-fry, ramen and more. We tried the Vegetable Ramen and Bulgogi Fries with Taro and Thai Coffee Bubble Tea. Everything was delicious. I would love to stop by again to try more.
