We came here on a whim. Just driving by looking for a place to eat, saw AJ's, and turned in. Boy are we glad we did! I had the beef stew over rice, my husband had a Cuban sandwich, and we split a chicken empanada. The Cuban was fantastic. The empanada was wonderful. But the real winner was the beef stew. Comfort food for the soul. So much flavor. Tastes like my grandma cooked it on a Sunday for a family dinner - not the garbage you get in a chain restaurant. The owner (A from "AJ") greeted us when we walked in. He was so welcoming and friendly, talking to everyone as they ordered. AJ's Breakfast Club has been a hit for us! It all started with my coworkers and I ordering through Uber Eats. Every time, the food is flavorful, and the portions are no joke! One time, something I ordered wasn't available, and he personally called me three times to make sure I had options. He went above and beyond, no question. The food is always tasty. I also found out he caters--and I'm hoping to have him cater my friend's wedding. We'll see! My friends are actually going in this weekend, so I'll get a report. SOLID 5 STARS! What can I say? I walked in. I ordered. I was served. I ate. I left. It sounds so ordinary, but my meal was nothing but ordinary. I ordered two eggs sunny side up, sausage, bacon, and breakfast potatoes ($14.45). Everything was just right. The sunny side up eggs were glistening and perfectly fried, the bacon was easily 10 inches long and had no grease, the breakfast potatoes were brown and crunchy just the way I like them, and the sausage was spicy and tasty. In-N-Out in 25 minutes with time to go to the clean nuetral gender restroom as well. The small venue only has about four or five 2 person tables, most of their businesses is to go. If you've never had Puerto Rican food before than I suggest you start with the pork chops and rice & beans. This place is so authentic. Second time here I tired the lasagna made with plantains instead of pasta. It made it sweeter but still delicious. I also had a bacon, egg & cheese sandwich on some Cuban bread pressed. AJ's is a hole in the wall with amazing Puerto Rican/Cuban food. My husband got the short ribs with some sides while I got the Tripleta sandwich and our friend got the Cuban sandwich. I had some of my husband's short ribs, which were so flavorful and tender! The Tripleta was one of the best sandwiches I had and perfectly balanced. Our friend said the Cuban was super good as well. The reason AJ's is called AJ's is because it's headed up by a husband/wife duo and his first name starts with A while hers starts with J. We got to chat with the husband who was extremely friendly and gave awesome recs. It felt like chatting with friends at home. The only thing that was missing was some wine! This is a great cafe for breakfast or lunch. Very friendly staff. We wanted a dog-friendly place for brunch close to the field where my daughter had her away soccer game. I found AJ's on yelp. What a great find! There were 4 of us and a dog. We planned on eating outdoors, but AJ offered to let us eat indoors, with the dog as long as he behaved. He even pulled together two tables for us. What friendly service! I had a cafe con leche and an empanada. They were delicious. My daughter had a Cuban sandwich, and it was very good. I'd happily return if in the area. read more

An unexpected treat! I spent the weekend at Treasure Island and was searching for a breakfast spot. There were a dozen choices in either direction when I noticed that one place was Puerto Rican and locked in on that with my sights set on a cuban sandwich with cafe con leche. It was a quick drive to AJ's on Alt. 19 via the Tom Stuart Causeway. They were just opening at 8am. Husband and wife owners Antonio and Jabnia were there with chef Hector. Very friendly and pleasant people who moved to Florida about 7 years ago after hurricane Maria. The place was neat and clean with indoor and outdoor dining. They serve sandwiches, hot food and a host of traditional favorites. As many of you know, I am very finicky when it comes to my cuban sandwich, with the perfect balance of ingredients more desirable to me than bulkiness or creativity. They brought me a Tampa Cuban made the way I like it, satisfying my fastidious nature. High marks for that! The right bread, pickles, mustard, ham, pork and salami perfectly balanced, pressed and charred. I also got the wife an empanada and an alcapurria. While I may never see them again since I live very far away, I was delighted to find a "perfect" cuban sandwich and to reminisce about our life and times in Puerto Rico. Come get you some. read more

A small, very clean piece of Puerto Rican paradise! Their Cuban sandwiches and empanadas are amazing, but the true gems are the sandwich de bistec and their bread pudding with a coconut and guava sauce!!! The steak in the sandwich is so tender and flavorful, mixed with all the perfect toppings to make this your favorite sandwich ever. Their bread pudding is different to any I have ever had. The bread is cut into little cubes and fried, after having tried it this way I wonder why all bread pudding is not made like this. And the sauce for it is incredibly wonderful. I would love it on ice cream and so many other desserts. This is a small family business that takes tremendous pride in their product, food that is fresh and full of flavor. Antonio and Hector make you feel like you are family and that you've known them all of your life! I cannot say enough compliments about the food and the people that prepare them! This was a 10/10 breakfast! My boyfriend and I are visiting from out of town and I noticed AJ's had great reviews. The service was top notch. Even the soda cans were delivered to our table with a cup of ice. When I realized they had coffee and went up to order one he said we should've ordered from the table so our food didn't get cold. Wanted something local and found this place. Three words...oh my gosh! This place is a hidden gem. The food was Amazing! Had pork chunks that were like lechon with rice and two eggs over easy with the crab and shrimp empanada! My lady had the pastrami sandwich. Best food ever! And met the owner....fantastic guy! Great addition in the area! There's not that many Puertorrican restaurants around and of those few, this one offers genuine PR cuisine. The place has limited indoor sitting but looks very clean and also has outdoor sitting. Food looks freshly cooked and the menu is not overwhelming. My daughter and I enjoyed their friendly atmosphere and service. The owners explained that they are still occasionally changing few items on their menu based on what customers like the most and also listened my suggestions about offering vegan options. They let us try some samples of their menu to help us decide what to order. By the way, their bread (krack) pudding is to die for!! Definitely much better than the typical bread pudding! My picky daughter loved all of it! She had arroz con gandules (rice mixed with pigeon peas), chicken stew and tostones (green fried plantains). Prices were reasonable as well. I highly recommend this place to anyone who wants a good puertorrican meal. read more

Great new addition to the breakfast/lunch scene in the Seminole area. The minute you walk in you know you're in for a treat, the aroma's are wonderful and the owner greets you and is very helpful with any of you questions. I had the "chicken of the day" (chicken stew) with rice and beans and I was thoroughly impressed. The flavors were wonderful and the portions were ample without being too much. My wife had the pork, rice and plantains which, was also very tasty. While it's probably more take out, at this time, we ate inside and enjoyed the atmosphere while chatting with the owner and the chef. Certainly, worth trying and we will be back. read more

Nice, but Limited Breakfast AJ's is a small diner with Puerto Rican food. The breakfast menu is quite limited. I had the egg/ham/toast plate and a café con leche. The scrambled eggs were pretty flat and should have been fluffier. The ham was thin-sliced deli ham which isn't my favorite. Nevertheless, it was nicely seared and had good flavor. The bread was traditional Cuban style and quite nice. The café con leche was very good. Prices were a little high. I'd be happy to stop in for an order of toast and café con leche, but I wouldn't return for a full breakfast. read more

This is a small corner restaurant on a divided highway. The owner (I assumed) is a friendly, and welcoming gentleman. The menu included breakfast items and sandwiches, but I opted for the lunch special, which came from a buffet with several selections. I asked him to choose his best. He served me green plantains, which were exceptional, four well-seasoned pieces of chicken (two breasts and two thighs), and rice and beans. The flavors were great but the food quickly cooled after being plated, and the chicken, though flavorful, was dry and overcooked. I also thought the portions were small for the price which was $21 and I included a small bottle of water. Seems like a local favorite. Several repeat customers came in for lunch while I was there. I would give my lunch here 3.5 stars because the owner was very engaging and the food was exceptionally well seasoned. read more
