    Turo turo style ordering
    Richard U.

My recent discovery was that Maunakea market food court is 90% filipino turo-turo stands! Even though there was a little redundancy in the foods offered at each filipino stand, most had things that the other stands did not have. After circling many times to figure out where I should eat, I settled on Aje's Cafe. I think I really wanted to try their classic sweet longanisa and their more tangy ilocano longanisa! They also had ong choy which I haven't had at a filipino place before. All was delicious and tasted as I hoped, homemade. There is communal table seating in the middle of all the food stands for immediate eating.

    Small container of pancit.

This is the best pancit I have ever eaten!!!! The little pieces of pork are bursting with such amazing flavor. (Btw, I usually dont care for any type of noodles, because usually it is so bland) I love getting my pancit fix at least once every couple of months. It's a little stand place but the workers are friendly and service is quick. Most mornings food is available at 6:20am, so a quick detour on my morning commute. The little container of pancit is $4 (small styaform container). The big container is $10 and if you want to pay $15 then ot is the big container with noodles mounded on.

I have passed this stall many, many times when I come to the food court at Maunakea Marketplace and today tried here for the very first time. I originally came to Chinatown to pick-up some dim sum from Happy Garden and decided to walk around. It was a mistake to stop by Bread House as the cheesecake made me hungry so I walked to the food court looking for something substantial to eat. It was about 1pm so many of the places had leftovers and didn't really find anything good but I bumped into this patron who had pork adobo with rice that looked really, really good. I found the courage to ask the man politely where he got his plate and he advised me Aje's Cafe. Right next door (to the right) of Nestor's, where they have good food, I immediately saw the pork adobo which had large chunks with pieces of pork skin all curled up. Because I had a heavy breakfast, I opted for the 1-choice which costs $3.50. The pork adobo was very tender and flavorful. I am fully aware the pork skin is not good for me but I couldn't pass on this and wolfed it down. The next thing I know my tummy is very happy! I found myself another great place for fast-food Filipino food in Chinatown... Apologies as I forgot to take a photo before eating. I was too hungry and only remembered just when I was about done. I'll make sure to post my plate the next time I come here. NOTE: Cash only

If you want good Filipino food, made the right way, don't go anywhere else but here. This place has HANDS DOWN the BEST Filipino food on the island. It's located in the Maunakea Marketplace Food Court. Okay, this place is not the prettiest place to eat, BUT the food here is PHENOMENAL. They sell some of the same things the other Filipino places do in the food court, but theirs is the best. It's not spectacular. They don't do anything crazy or different with the food. It's 'just right.' It reminds me of the way my father used to cook, and before discovering Aje's, nothing would compare to a good filipino home-cooked meal.. until now. Everything is cooked simply and done well. Meat dishes are always tender. Rice is always sticky but not too wet. Everything from the pork guisantes (a pork dish simmered with peas and bell peppers) to the tortang talong (grilled eggplant and fried with egg) is seasoned well. It tastes the way its supposed to taste and nothing else compromises its simple flavors. It's cuz ingredients are always fresh and the food is made fresh daily from the produce sold in Chinatown. My personal favorites: Nilagang Baka: Beef soup made with cabbage.. Sounds so simple because it is. She really gets the beef flavor to permeate throughout the soup and the meat is so tender it melts in your mouth. Tortang Talong: Honestly, it's just grilled eggplant, smashed, and fried in egg, but I can't get it to taste like that at home! What's the secret? Pork Guisantes: Probably the most popular filipino dish. Pork stewed with green peas and bell peppers. If you've had this before, you haven't had Aje's. Laing: Taro leaves simmered in coconut milk with spices. First of all, anything with coconut milk is good, but this classic dish is sooooo good. The prices are cheap $3 for one choice and $7 for 3 choices.

I used to go here all the time to get my filipino food fix. Unfortunately they closed the Kalihi…read morerestaurant and now have to make the drive out to Waipahu. If you have never been here I highly recommend you trying their filipino food. Portion size is good and worth the money but the main reason you're buying their food is cause it's winnahs. I did take out a few of their menu items. Their special for July is lechon Kawali, pancit, pork gisantes and pork adobo fried rice. It's good to get this or mixed plate with 3 choices. It allows to try more of their menu selections. While one is good 3 or 4 is much better especially if coming here for the very first time. You won't be disappointed. I called in to place my order and it would be twenty minutes which is fine cause that's how long it took me to get there. The food was hot and ready to go. I made sure my ac was off so I can enjoy a nice hot lunch. The place was crowded even at 1pm. People know good food when they eat it. Lots of parking. The lechon Kawali was good. It's nice and meaty with some nice soft fat pieces. Oh so good. Yeah if you are worried about cholesterol then this might not be for you. If not you gonna enjoy it. The pancit is good. The pork gisantes which is more commonly known as pork and peas is really good. It's like stew and you wanna mix your rice with it. If you like eggs over easy then you should have that over your gisantes. It's sooooooo good. Kinda like Loco moco except it's stew. When that yolk breaks and blends in with the gisantes hoo boy. Just really good stuff there. Then the main attraction is their pork adobo fried rice omelet. I believe they were the original restaurant that brought it out. I might be wrong but they make it just right. Every bite is so good especially when you bite into one that has fat in it. Yummy. Yeah not a good choice if you're staying away from cholesterol but if not you're gonna enjoy it. The pork adobo fried rice is not dry like some other places I've tried. Ok I admit i love filipino food. I had to get dinuguan. Chocolate meat. Another winner with rice and really good with over eggs on top of it. Nice tender succulent pieces of pork. Oh my God, it's so good. I also got Shanghai lumpia. This is da bomb. You gotta eat this one hot and fresh. If not it gets stale and soggy so I ate this first. You dip it into vinegar. I like a little heat so I add Tabasco to it. Great with beer. It's so good. I'm missing it already. Then the final dish i got was their sari sari. It's soup with mixed veggies, baby shrimp and lechon. The soup is delicious and comforting. It's great on a cold night or maybe when you're feeling sick. Better than your chicken noodle soup for sure. It's also great remedy for that hangover you got last night. Lol All in all you just gotta try it. Let me know what you got and how good it tasted. Enjoy and thank me later.

The pancit was a standout: bihon noodles perfectly stir-fried with green onions and subtle seasoning, light yet satisfying as a side that balanced the richer dishes without overwhelming. Dinuguan brought that deep, savory pork blood stew richness - tender meat in a chocolatey gravy with a vinegar kick, way better than average and not overly gamey Monggo (mung beans) was hearty and comforting, simmered smooth with malunggay or bittermelon options for that homey veggie depth - grows on you with each bite. My family and I were craving Filipino food and walked in hoping to get our fix. The restaurant was empty with 2 people dining in so we thought we avoided the dinner rush. Upon entering we were approached by a middle aged woman who points us to a chair and tells us "over here is fine". No greeting or acknowledgement. Even before we could get to our chair, she shouts out about 5 dishes they were out of with her back turned to us. This lady was cold and absurdly rude. We left and ended up just getting dinner from Foodland. I would've loved to have spent my money on a Filipino owned restaurant but it seemed that lady didn't want the business and never cared to help anyone that came through her restaurant. Such a very disappointing experience. I rarely drop 1 star reviews but I walked away stunned at the lack of customer service this lady displayed. Do yourself a favor and go to Elena's. They actually care about their restaurant and the people who spend their hard earned money there. I'll never be coming back. I'll also be sharing my experience so others are spared their time and money.

Too bad it didn't play out well. The boiled peanuts were always a buy when we were in the mood. A posting this morning on the doors indicates they will re-open after renovation (does not mention timetable). Social media indicated they closed down 4/14/26. Same owner? New owner? Totally different business? Would be a shame if the iconic "Fort Ruger Market" disappears. If you lived in Kaimuki or went to Kapiolani Community College, this store was an example of the mom n pop stores that used to dot many neighborhoods before the arrival of 7-11 and other convenience stores. They were a Kaimuki Institution for over 75+ years. Hope they come back in a new and better form. Posted notice seen 4/15/26. Note: 4/16/26- a kitv news broadcast indicated that the owner, connected with the Young Fish Market family, told KITV after renovation the bldg would be occupied by CU Korean store, and that they would carry some of the Ruger Mkt favorites like poke and boiled peanuts . Hope they can incorporate the Fort Ruger Market name. Too iconic to disappear.
