Ordered takeout from this spot the other day, but we have dined in a handful of times. The food is good but not good enough to warrant the customer service I experienced this last visit. I arrived at 9:50am. As I was walking up to the entrance i noticed that there weren't any hours of operation posted, but I could see through the window that there were workers inside and the lights were on. The door was unlocked as soon as I stepped inside, the woman standing at the hostess stand told me "we open at 10." She puts her fingers up showing me the number 10. Ok no problem, I'll just wait outside. I was sitting on the bench, scrolling through my phone, a couple walked into the restaurant and they were seated right away. I looked at my watch, it was 9:57am. Unbelievable. I walked back into the restaurant and a different woman greeted me. "I just wanted to place an order to go" I said. This lady was more pleasant than the first, and she took my order right away. I ordered the 3 choice plate lunch and the chefs special adobo fried rice with lechon kawali. I'm pretty picky when it comes to Filipino food because I feel like nothing compares to my mom's cooking (biased, I know) and Shay's was one of the better ones we enjoyed. Dined here a couple times about 9 years ago and really enjoyed my experience. I wish I could say the same for my experience last night. My family and I were craving Filipino food and walked in hoping to get our fix. The restaurant was empty with 2 people dining in so we thought we avoided the dinner rush. Upon entering we were approached by a middle aged woman who points us to a chair and tells us "over here is fine". No greeting or acknowledgement. Even before we could get to our chair, she shouts out about 5 dishes they were out of with her back turned to us. This lady was cold and absurdly rude. We left and ended up just getting dinner from Foodland. I would've loved to have spent my money on a Filipino owned restaurant but it seemed that lady didn't want the business and never cared to help anyone that came through her restaurant. Such a very disappointing experience. I rarely drop 1 star reviews but I walked away stunned at the lack of customer service this lady displayed. Do yourself a favor and go to Elena's. They actually care about their restaurant and the people who spend their hard earned money there. I'll never be coming back. I can't believe it took me so long to try this place. We came in for a late lunch one Sunday afternoon. The place is bright and well lit, nice Filipino decor with map of the Philippines and nostalgic giant wooden fork and spoon. We were craving Kare Kare and the nice waitress said they were out and only had lechón kawali Kare Kare. Talk about a surprise win, it came out delicious! I got to try a few items that I have never tried. Their Bangus fish, which was deep fried with a spiced vinegar sauce on the side. The "crispy" silit which i am only figuring out now is fried pig intestines. To be honest because it's fried so well, it's basically chicharron with no flavor unless you dip in vinegar! But this was close enough. The portions are great probably good enough for two. The lumpia were fire as well. 4 for $10 is a bit steep but not too bad. Crunchy wrappers. Tasty inside. They have this vinegar based dipping sauce, that I didn't really enjoy. My mom softens that vinegar by mixing it with ketchup and a bit of sugar if needed. Parents was craving some pork soup dish so decided to check out "Shay's Filipino food" in Waipio. For me it's my 2nd time only eating at Shay's Filipino food. So not sure what is really good at this Resturant, but let's check out and see "Yah You" So what we ordered on this visit was - *Adobo fried rice topped with scramble egg (it was Okay) *Pork guisantis (good) *BIHON noodles (it was okay) *Pork soup (not bad parents liked it) Service - It was okay they refilled water when needed to, but at times had to get their attention on other requests. Ambiance - pretty good open spot with tables and chairs also they do have a private bathroom in the Resturant which is good for customers who are dining in. One thing I wish had tho when we ate in the Resturant was there AC wasn't working and it was hot like bruh, I mean they had FANS but still buggah was hot ladat. Not to sure how long it has been down. Some of the staff were rude and impatient while the other half were nice, but inattentive. It took over an hour waiting for the food, even though the restaraunt only had one group dining inside. The food wasn't anything fancy, it tastes like what you would expect, but it was overly priced. For two items alone costed almost $50, including tax and tip. There was a secondary upcharge for the Lechón. The Pancit and Adobo were good, flavorful and authentic tasting. The Lechón was actually quite good but definitely not worth the upcharge.
