A couple of workmates wanted to go to Nayong on Union Mall because they had Kare Kare that day. I ordered the two-choice plate, opting for Kare Kare (curry with peanut sauce) and Kalderetang (goat stew). My friends took the last of the Pancit so it was two scoops of rice for me. My plate cost $16.75. We brought the plates back to our office and opened our containers. My plate looked fine, but I found the taste of the Kare Kare wanting. The curry / peanut sauce was not very tasty; it needed bagoong to add to the flavor profile. On the other hand, the kalderetang was very good; the goat was tender, and the level of gaminess was Goldilocks perfect, just right. The Kalderetang featured pieces of potato and carrot, the latter adding sweetness to the dish. My compadres were less pleased. The one that opted for an all Kare Kare plate opined that Kare Kare must have oxtail and perhaps other pieces of offal; this one featured stew meat and a few pieces of tripe. He was an unhappy camper. The other had Dinuguan in addition to the Kare Kare. He didn't finish his plate which told me he didn't enjoy his dishes. The bottom line: We were disappointed and collectively stated we wouldn't be returning; the food truck that appears nearby offers arguably tastier food for the same $$. read more

Moved from Fort Street? Ordered banana lumpia for a coworkers bday. I've never seen it look like an egg roll before - usually the sides open and nice and crispy? Not my thing, so hard to judge, but the coworkers said was good. Workers polite enough. Funny though I order 15 lumpia, and I ask for napkins and he gave me 3. I may look like I can eat all by myself, or maybe share with 2 friends, but it was really for more people to share. Asked for more and got an exasperated look. Located on Front St x S Hotel St. Trying to find parking was a hassle but I finally found a spot. Also, I had a huge craving for some home cooking so I wasn't going to give up so easily. I ordered the pork adobo, pancit and pinakbet. The pork was very tender and the pinakbet had lots of flavor. The sotanghon noodles were moist and the veggies for the pancit were plentiful. I loved everything I've ever tried from here. My go-to is a mini plate with pancit and pinakbet - their pinakbet is truly one of the best I've had. Their pork adobo and pork guisantes is also very good! But, the best thing from here hands down is their turon - I've never had banana lumpia so crispy, sweet, and with such a generous amount of banana and jackfruit. This is one of my go to places if I'm craving authentic Filipino cuisine. Their dishes reminded me of the comfort of home-cooked Filipino meals. Its take out style and you have the option of getting one or two choices. I usually get two because it's so hard to pick only one dish. The adobo is savory and tender, the sinigang has just the right tang and warmth, and their pancit is flavorful. Their halo-halo - a perfectly balanced, and a refreshing dessert that is a must-try. They recently moved to Union mall next to 1132 Bishop. Their new location is more spacious with seating. While the location may be a bit away from the main Fort Street mall area, the journey is well worth it. The restaurant itself doesn't offer a lot in terms of parking, but street parking is usually available on Bishop (for grab and go only). The staff is warm and welcome. If you go there often, they will remember you and know what your regulars are. read more

I've passed by this place so many times at fort street and when I saw they had Filipino breakfast I had to come! It's been my latest obsession. Unfortunately I came too late but was happy to try their regular lunch plate. They didn't have garlic fried rice anymore too :( I got a 2 choice combo plate for 10.50 and chose the palabok as my carbs. The cashier asked if I wanted half half but said nah but good to know that's an option. The palabok was amazing since there were some pig skin pieces scattered throughout the noodles. Kind of regret not getting half half since the whole plate was so flavorful I needed rice as a chaser haha! Not a bad thing :P I chose pork adobo and pork guisantes as my two entrees. The cashier was super nice cause I kept asking about what each various dish was since it was laid out to see. He was super chill about it. The adobo and guisantes were stacked on I could not finish it! Maybe I need get one veggie instead of two porks cause it felt pretty heavy after x). I also added on banana lumpia as my dessert and damn that shit was good! It had the caramelization and brown sugar inside. They sell out of a lot of things quick since I also asked for their shanghai lumpia and their pork lumpia and they were out. Upon waiting in line to place our order, I see they offered a (1 item) plate lunch with your choice of rice or pancit for $5.50. If you want a (2 item) plate lunch with rice or pancit, it is $7.50.........Wot a dealage yo! Some of the items on the wall menu - Pork Gisantes, Fried Bangus, Dinuguan, Pork Belly, Chicken Timola, Sinigang Pork, Tortang Talong, Afritada, Pinakbet, Pork Adobo, Mongo Beans, & Pancit. For my lunch today, I ordered a (2 item plate) with pancit, and I ended up choosing the Pork Adobo & Pinakbet. My coworker also took a (2 item plate) with rice, Mongo Beans, & Pinakbet. What can I say about the grub? It was puuuuuuuurty good! I enjoyed the pancit.........it kinda reminds me of the Chinese Singapore noodles. The Pork Adobo was delicious, and not too oily.......very nice flavor to it. As for the Pinakbet, I ordered this dish not knowing what I was getting (sorry I not Filipino), only to find out that this dish is a bitter melon kinda dish. I'm not a big fan of bitter melon, as Chinese folks also eat that kinda stuff. Now don't get me wrong.............. regardless on how the bitter melon is made, it's just something I normally wouldn't eat, as I don't like the bitterness taste of the bitter melon. But when I ate the Pinakbet at Nayong, I must say........... surprisingly it wasn't bad at all........what made it palatable for me was the gravy sauce that came with the dish, if it wasn't for the sauce, I'd probably couldn't eat it. This is a small Filipino fast food restaurant (on Fort Street Mall), with about 7 tables or so. The place is clean, has really good a/c (great on a hot day), and service is fast & friendly. I guess this place must be pretty popular, as all the tables were taken, and there was a line of people trying to order their food. You can tell if a place makes good Filipino food, because all the folks who were dining here today were Filipino, with the the exception of one token Chinaman (me) & my coworker who is Japanese. Lol! Comfort Filipino food. They never give me a rough time when all I want is just soup and veggies for the chicken papaya. They are located in DTHNL on fort street mall. They usually get super busy during 11 a-1p. Lines are usually long and then you're stuck with left overs that you probably wouldn't want to order. So I suggest going exactly at 11am. Food prices are pretty reasonable. Space is a bit compact with no more than 8 seating areas. A place to order, pick up & go. I go in, order..total came out to 7.07. 7.07?! I asked the worker how much the tocilog costs and said, oh it's 2 items so that's why it's 7.07. Umm..the sign outside posted said 5.99! She said, "oh I'm sorry maam, my boss put that up 5 years ago and the price is not the same. I will chance it as for Dec 1st" uh..still no price change though..still charged me the 7.07. I haven't really seen Filipino food in downtown other than a few dishes featured at other restaurants (e.g. Golden Bowl), so I was shocked when I walked into Nayong. It seems everyone ordered some type of whole fried fish. I'll pass. I actually walked in for the halo halo with ube ice cream! It's not bad, and it has a lot of variety for $5.00. The plain halo halo is only $4, but c'mon what's it without ube ice cream?? Since I had to wait, I figured I'd pick up lunch, too. I got a 1-choice mini, which included pancit (you could get rice instead or both), and gisantes for $5.25. It was pretty good. Not quite like my dad's cooking, but way better than other filipino fast foods (i.e. golden coin, bautista's) and definitely filling without being too greasy. I definitely would go back to try the other Magnolia Ice Cream flavors. read more

This is a pretty standard filipino restaurant where you point at what dish you want with rice. I always struggle at these places because I'm not 100% familiar with all the dishes, and therefore always order the same thing. When I asked if I could have a glass of water, they said they didn't have any, but when I sat down with my bottled drink and food, I noticed other patrons using a cooler on the other side of the restaurant. Why didn't they point to that? The price for one option/rice was very reasonable given the amount of food there. I wish they had brown rice as an option. If I'm at the Ross nearby or walking around fort street mall for some reason while craving filipino food, I'll stop by again. This isn't a place that I would crave, however. read more

II seriously doubt that Filipinos would go out of their way to dine here.Asking for more soup is a common option that other places give freely and with a smile.Maybe the food is good but if you ask for extra soup prepare yourself to be treated like a homeless person asking for spare change. A lot more than I ever thought I would after having a Filipina roomie that could cook her pants off and a Filipino boyfriend that has introduced me to Nayong. Nayong is across from HPU, right next door to Govindaji's. Most Filipino restaurants I've been to seem to have their dishes sitting in a gallon of oil. Not Nayong. Standouts for me at this restaurant are the beefsteak (only on Tuesdays), tinola and sinigang. They have 1, 2 and 3 entree plate specials, all coming with either rice or pancit or half and half. Their halo halo is not bad either. If you are around Ft. Street Mall and are craving some Filipino food, make sure you pop in. Yay! Good Filipino food in downtown! I did not know they had a filipino fastfood in downtown but i love this place! I got the dinuguan, laing, rice and pancit - all in one order for just under 8 dollars. They also have the brown banana dessert which i miss a lot. their food is good unlike the filipino place in international market place. big servings too! can't wait to try the halohalo! just walk beyond blazing steaks and subway and you'll find a small sign that says nayong pilipino... :) read more

ONE BIG PLUS ABOUT NAYONG'S FOOD: NOT GREASY!!! I am not Filipina, but I am a big fan of Filipino food, having been exposed to it for the majority of my life. So I am a big, big fan of tasty Filipino dishes that are available here in Hawaii. Nayong's is my favorite Filipino restaurant in the downtown area. I will get something there at least once a week and always enjoy my meal. My favorite dishes there are the adobo, pork guisantes and the diniguan. I love that they call it "chocolate meat" lols! I DROOL whenever I see their pinakbet and always order that. Another favorite is the dessert with the Mochi balls, various types of sweet potatoes, and coconut sauce. I don't know the name of that dish in Filipino, but Nayong's makes it the best! Did I mention that their pork adobo is not greasy? I don't handle greasy food very well, so I really appreciate that their food is not bathing in grease, especially their fried stuff like their chicharones, lumpia, etc. The waitstaff is friendly and efficient. They knock that lunchtime crowd down pretty quick. And, most importantly to the Pake side of me (I'm Hawaiian, Chinese, Portuguese), their prices are very reasonable and you totally get your money's worth. If there is a Zero I would rate this place 0... I come here for lunch most times because the food is good. But this week, couple times I bought this week I noticed there was hair on my food. I did not inform them the first time but the second time when I pointed it out, the owner came out of the kitchen mad and told me it was my hair and that she will close the food selection because it's the customers hairs that gets in the food they're selling. Feels like home-cooked meal. For $6 I can get pork adobo (which was yum) with a scoop of rice and a scoop of pancit. That made me happy. The pancit was freshly made so there's nothing to complain about. The place itself is tiny just like most fast food places on Fort St. with about 9 tables. No special décor to boot but you're there for the food anyway. It's generally clean and will make you think it's also clean in the back which is the kitchen. I think it's worth to give this place a try if you're looking for your standard Filipino or Pinoy food. You can't go wrong with any dish, I suppose, as they pretty much represent all the many varieties from the country's thousands of islands.
