I came here on a weeknight around 6pm and was seated immediately. It was a nice change, considering that it's always packed on the weekends. I ordered the Ajishin Udon with tamago (egg block), and a few rolls. The udon was yummy, albeit a tad lukewarm. The broth was flavorful and the noodles had a nice chewy texture. The egg is one of my favorites; it is on the sweet side but with very good consistency. The rolls were good and didn't stand out particularly. The sushi rice was cooked expertly, not soggy and you can taste the individual grains. Maybe it's the waiting in line, but I remember the food tasting hotter and fresher on the weekends. Whenever I come back to Michigan, my family will always make sure to go to Ajishin! Be ready to wait at least 30 minutes no matter when you arrive - it's always busy. But it is SO WORTH IT! The lunch special always comes with a full-sized udon noodle soup with a different main dish each day. Review disclaimer: This is purely on TASTE and my experience on the receiving end of a takeout order. My uncle who was in town brought over Ajishin for lunch. He had ordered udon for everyone and a variety of sushi, sashimi, nigiri to share. The portion sizes for udon is very generous and the noodles/broth were both very tasty!! I want to say we got the Ajishin udon as it came with boiled egg, fish cakes, and crab meat and a side of tempura shrimp and veggies to top. It definitely fulfilled my udon craving! The sushi, sashimi, and nigiri were all also pretty good quality. I was pleasantly surprised! The sushi rice is also well seasoned and great fish to rice ratio. I looked at their menu afterwards out of my own curiosity and their pricing is fantastic!! They have great lunch specials - sushi and/or sashimi lunch platters starting at just $9-$10! There's a reason why there is a line outside the door every day before opening, like it's Black Friday. Ajishin has the most delicious made-from-scratch broth for their udon bowls. The udon noodles themselves have a great chewy texture (not mushy). I usually get the tamago (egg) sushi and shrimp tempura roll to go with the udon. The tamago is different from other places - it's not just a thin strip of egg tied to the top of some rice with seaweed. Instead, the rice is enveloped inside the egg, so you get at least twice as much egg as you'd normally get if you ordered this somewhere else. The shrimp tempura is fresh and crispy. Their sushi rice is seasoned well with sweet vinegar. I don't think I've had better sushi elsewhere. The prices here are very reasonable for what you get. It is worth the wait. I should mention, though, if you order carryout, call way ahead of time and find out how long it will take so you're not standing there for a long time waiting for your order. read more

Udon is their specialty. It is a small dining room and there is usually a line out the door. However, it is currently still carry-out only. Just hand over the udon! I'll eat in my car; I do not care. Joking aside, something is lost if your carryout trip home is too long. It's so much better when it is fresh and hot. The broth is light, but flavorful. The udon is plump with the perfect consistency and chew. It's very satisfying. The dish includes shrimp and vegetable tempura, fried tofu, boiled egg and dried seaweed tangle flakes. The combination makes for a complex profile of flavors that keeps me coming back for more. They have unusual hours in that there's a closure between lunch and dinner times. First time here to check out if Ajishin lives up to all the hype. We were there today, Saturday, for lunch and arrived early, close to 11am, and waited in the car. Around 11:15am the first person showed up to be first in line, followed quickly by a few more so we decided to line up as well in the cold. We were about fifth in line and by the time the door opened there were probably 40 people in line. The line moved in quickly and we were seated immediately and given hot green tea that was good to warm up with. Our friends joined us a few minutes later. While all of the people in line when they opened made it inside, many were left standing to wait for a table to open up. We placed our orders within five minutes of being seated. I ordered the Large Sushi Lunch and Curry Rice to share while my wife ordered the special, which was a Bowl of Udon with a Chirashi Sushi Bowl. Mine came with a Salad as well and my wife's came with a small bowl of Clear Soup. All of the dishes were delicious. My wife was pleased that the crab was real and not Krab! Service was polite as well as prompt and didn't seem bothered by first timers asking lots of questions. The prices for lunch were very reasonable (Curry Rice with Shrimp was $6 and, with very fSalad was a complete meal by itself) given the portion sizes. Ajishin definitely delivers good value and deserves its high ratings. First off, big ups to every person who wrote in their review to try the curry rice. And big ups to the folks that reported that even though it's no longer on the menu to ask for it and ye shall receive. The response to this dish was so overwhelming that I ordered it (without even really knowing what it was all about) and I was thrilled with it. A dark curry sauce with veggies and some meat mixed in served with some rice and small fried shrimp. I ate to the point of discomfort. We also tried some sushi and my fella got a bowl of the tofu udon. I only took a small taste of the udon but I was really impressed. The sushi was fantastic. No fancy rolls here, just your standard fare like California and Spicy Tuna rolls but it was excellent and amazingly fresh. I also got some salmon and tuna belly nigiri and both just absolutely melted in my mouth. As a matter of fact, I'm craving some right now. Also the price was REALLY cheap for such quality. The space is small but we went at about 8:30 on a Wednesday and didn't have a wait at all. If you're cool with eating later it might be strategic move to go then to avoid those long lines I've heard about. Our waitstaff was a-ok as well. At the start they were really attentive and our food came out EXTREMELY fast but once we finished they were nowhere to be found and I had to flag them down to get our check. Not a big deal since I was too full to really move in a hurry anyway but just a warning to maybe ask for your check when your food comes if you're in a rush. It's worth mentioning, I think, that my fella was head over heels for the wasabi here. I'm not a huge wasabi person so I can't compare but he was was all over it. The space is very small and cramped. During the winter months when people don't like to wait outside, the inside is soooo cramped with people waiting. You can call ahead to make reservations butttttttt they don't seat you when you arrive at the designated time, they document your time of arrival and somehow move you up the list a bit...(I can't explain it in all honesty, my average wait time is roughly 40 mins if I don't come during regular/peak time). The food I would say is mediocre to good at best. Nothing that I would say is phenomenal but it hits the spot for me since it's the only udon shop I know of around here. The sushi is okay, nothing too fancy. It's not high grade sushi for sure but okay. Such a unique flavor that it's hard to describe, but I'd say sweet and creamy with a slight hint of ginger. The flavor is heavenly. The ajishin udon is the best udon I've ever had as well! The broth is very flavorful yet not overpowering. The udon noodles are thick and cooked perfectly, and there's so many great ingredients that come in the soup that add to the flavor (egg, assorted tempura, shrimp, etc). The sushi here is extremely well priced, and very fresh. The salmon melts in your mouth, and the California rolls are very creamy/flavorful. This place exceeds all expectations in every way possible. The restaurant doesn't have a ton of seating so it fills up quickly. However, you cannot find better food for the price, with the average bowl of udon being ~$6. The food comes out very quickly after ordering too! The seafood broth in their udon they use is very flavorful and fresh. They make you sit outside on the curb and they don't give you an estimated wait or really any information. I'd never come here in the winter with the waits they have. A solid 5-star for food. A 3-star service. They open at 5pm for dinner and I arrived around 4:55pm. There were already at least 10 people waiting in line. This is how popular they are. The fried tofu in there is surprisingly good. It's thin fried tofu slice instead of cube, and very flavorful. I highly recommended on that.
