Can't go wrong with Oishi when it comes to Japanese food. If you are looking for value then Katsu curry or other rice dish seems to have the most portion for your buck. Ramen or udon I would try other places. Just very mid Ramen and udon because the broth is probably from soup mix instead of brewing it everyday. Anyway it is good spot for quick Japanese food. I never seen them have a lot of customers so food come out very fast. read more

Since I grew up in Japan trying to find authentic Japanese food In MI has been a struggle but I finally found a place!! Oishi is authentic Japanese food! We went as a family of 8 & had made a reservation. We were seated right away in a little back room area, which was nice & semi-private. We ordered gyoza & tuna nigiri as an appetizer & did not have to wait long for those to come out along with miso soup. Most of my family ordered tonkatsu, which was great and came with Japanese style salad. We ordered miso ramen for our 3 year old granddaughter & others in our family ordered chicken katsu curry & beef yakisoba. The portions are large & you leave full. A little hard to find but worth it. Large menu that is at times a little adventurous. My meetup group enjoyed all their choices from sushi to temptua items to noodles. Service is friendly and there when you need them. Flexible with reservations so larger groups are welcome. Parking is around the building. Went here for dinner and it was pretty empty which is how I like it! Got a window seat and was content with the surroundings. They have a small bar at the entry and a good amount of space for any number of groups. It's comfortable and a bit typical of an Asian restaurant in terms of decor. Menu is solid! A little something for everyone from an Asian food perspective. We ordered ginger salads, two sushi rolls (firecracker was awesome), and I got chicken yakisoba with a request for some spice added. Jackpot! It was soooo good. I loved it. Best I've ever had. I was sad when my main entree was finished. Matched with a cold Sapporo from the tap and it was a very very satisfying meal. Can't wait to have it again. Service was also great. Funny and engaging; thankful for our patronage and very helpful with recommendations. Still thinking about it right now and it's been a week. One of our favorite Japanese restaurants in Novi, MI. Excellent value. Nice selection of sushi and hot dishes. They have Takoyaki which is one of favorite appetizer. Not easy to find. Clientele is mostly Japanese which is good sign. I really loved the Katsudon bowl. Takoyaki has a ratio of octopus to batter. Sushi is okay for the price considering how far we are from the ocean. We prefer the hot dishes here. They have soba noodles here which you can't always find either at more Americanized restaurants. Service is friendly and efficient with a smile. I was really disappointed with this place as I had heard good reviews. Top disappointments were they were not GLUTEN FREE FRIENDLY. No GF soy sauce, nor food selections. Rolls were loosely made. See pictures. Waiter was immensely under trained. He didn't any any answers to any of our questions. He had to go ask multiple times for answers which is fine, most likely he was knew and young but not once did a supervisor come check on us even though our waiter was very new. The fish did taste fresh and the ingredients were good but cut in a lazy way. Cucumbers were unusually cut thick. Presentation was crappy but over all waiter was nice. I would not return due to their lack of gluten free options. Definitely needs some modernization with dietary friendly needs. read more

Over the past 20+ years, the Novi area has been a huge proliferation of Japanese restaurants in the city, and in nearby communities. This has been commensurate with the significant increase of Japanese businesses and population directly tied to the local auto industry. What would have passed as authentic cuisine from Tokyo or very delicious in the 1990s, wouldn't cut the mustard by today's standards in the area, which is especially true given how popular Japanese food has become in America since the 1990s. Oishi, is owned by a family from Korea, and they tend to lean more towards the type of taste and flavoring you would find in Seoul or other nearby cities. When I went here with a Akemi, a friend of mine from Osaka, she could immediately taste the difference as she ordered Takoyaki, which is a common street food found in her hometown. She calls this and Okonomiyaki "Osaka Soul Food." I have noticed that the fish that is served here isn't the freshest I have ever had, so I lean more towards the don buri (rice bowls). I've had Oyakodon, and Gyudon, and both were very delicious. I really want to try their dinner menu and checkout their Salmon Teriyaki in the future. read more

Growing up with a Japanese Mom, I recognize and feel familiar with many of these items. They bring me back and they are not offered at many places these days. Overall, the food is very good. The ebi shumai is a favorite! Their ramen is good, I just wish they served it in bigger bowls with more delicious broth. The appetizers can amount to a nice diverse feast and allows for a lot of variety. The service has been attentive and friendly. The place gets busy at lunch. Tried a wide array of their dishes during my visit. The Age Dashi Tofu was delicious. Lightly fermented and Tempura fried. Four delicious servings. Both my partner and I really enjoyed it. Chicken Yakitori was one I was really looking forward too. The chargrilled taste was nice, especially on the green onion, but the chicken was a bit dry and the whole dish was quite bland. Usually this is accompanied by a sauce in my experience. No such luck this visit. Miso soup was cheap and yummy. Tuna Flight (8 pcs. Tuna and Avocado roll and 4 pieces Tuna Nigiri) This was the perfect size for my date and I to sample some sushi. Very fresh, very yummy, and very reasonably priced for 23 dollars. We also tried their Ramen selection. My partner had the traditional Pork Tonkatsu, which had a very warm and savory broth, something perfect to cure a cold. Reminded me a bit of my grandmothers homemade soup. Plenty of pork to pair with, but the egg was very overdone and rubbery. I had the hot and spicy ramen. the ingredients were a bit of a mess, mostly just onions, sprouts, and ill be honest, and meat? (im still not sure what it was... beef, chicken, or pork) was very overcooked and stringy. But the broth was absolute fire. Wonderful heat, just packed full of flavor. My bowl might not have been empty when I was done, but the broth had completely disappeared. The menu could use a little more thorough explanations, and their website needs updated pricing (everythings a dollar more now) but the service was very fast and friendly. It was also very clean. Their fried rice, however, has always been tasty. I've gotten sushi here before and wasn't impressed. It was basically the quality of something you'd get at an American grocery store, and it's expensive too! This time, I ordered the pork fried rice entree and enjoyed it. The pork and vegetables were finely chopped and distributed evenly throughout. The rice itself had a great wok-seared flavor. The portion size was also generous and it came with a bowl of miso soup. For $9.95, it wasn't too bad. Service was okay. The waitress was friendly but a bit slow to bring drinks. She also put my friend's drink on my bill, but he just paid me back in cash so we didn't have to wait for her to fix it (we had a movie to catch). I came here for lunch on a Sat with two of my good friends and I'd definitely come back for lunch. My one friend who is a frequent diner here says it's the best way to experience this place because of you come at night it's quite expensive. I had the Udon and sushi lunch special. It came with udon noodles, scallions, sweet tofu and some sort of seaweed in a decent but lite on flavor broth. It came with three pieces of sushi salmon, shrimp and tuna. All were fresh and the salmon in particular was very tasty. This lunch special comes in at $8.95 and you get a good amount of food for that price. My fiancé talked up this restaurant, said it was one of his favorites and an absolute must to visit when experiencing the town of Novi. So imagine my disappointment when my fiancé and I were sitting and waiting for what felt like hours for a single rainbow roll. Everything else was fabulous. We received our appetizers at reasonable times. Miso soup, Edamame, Tako Yaki. All great. We had a great conversation during. This was a celebratory dinner as I finally moved in with my fiancé. But... at some point you just sit and wonder why the rainbow roll you ordered to share at 6:00pm is still in production after 7:10pm. We asked the waitress multiple times about the roll and she kept saying she would check. She even started avoiding our table... So. I found it odd when I finally just requested the bill so we could leave. The waitress had the bill in hand already. No explanation about the roll. We didn't even see it being prepared. Like the order wasn't even put in? The chef even looked confused like he wasn't sure why we didn't order sushi. He asked if everything was ok, and we remarked saying all was well. My fiancé and I didn't see the need to escalate the situation. We are still trying to understand what happened. I have never felt more disregarded and disrespected in a restaurant in my life. The service originally was fine and my friend and I were sat quickly, The food was decent. However the issue came as we were trying to check out. Our waitress presented us one bill and we planned to split it amongst ourselves. Our collective bill was about $95. On my card, I left a $10 tip to the server. Planning to leave the remainder in cash as we left since we were still finishing our wine. Before we could finish our wine and conversation, the waitress comes over looks at the bill and says " this is not enough, need more" We're confused and asked her to repeat... she continues on that our tip was only 10 percent and she needed a much larger tip and circles the tipping break out. Oishi means delicious, and we really do quite like it here a lot! It's a great option for Japanese food in this area, a strong contender in a heavy Asian restaurant stretch of area. My favorite things here are the veg croquettes and the katsu pork curry. Really, I am a sucker for a big bowl of rice topped with simmered Japanese curry and some crispy protein. There isn't much that'll make me happier in terms of comfort food. Except for maybe a fluffy curry omelet, which I have yet to find in the US - but I digress. Surreal experience! If you're the type of person that expects a decent meal for just above $100, I would probably avoid this place. We ordered 2 appetizers, beverages, and 4 specialty rolls -- 3 of which were just OK, the fourth was inedible to us and frankly, a bit worrisome. The Oishi Fire roll smelled like the fish had expired three days earlier and tasted even worse. When we politely asked our fantastically friendly waiter (Jake) to take that roll back to the kitchen and perhaps bring us any one of the other three we had also ordered, he sheepishly said "I'll try" which was an omen of things to come. Next, we heard him trying to explain why we had sent back the horribly smelling fish and we witnessed them laughing at our politically sensitive explanation that it tasted "way too fishy". The manager/owner then sent our waiter back out to tell us he refused to switch out the roll or "do anything about it". What an incredibly petty, prideful, and quite frankly stupid thing to do. We will never, ever, return to this place and will spend the rest of today hoping we don't get ill from the spoiled smelling fish we took two bites of. We happily paid our bill and left with the knowledge that neither us or anyone else we know will ever patronize this place again. In days when restaurants are struggling to stay afloat, we're simply dumbfounded at the refusal to speak with us about it, swap out the roll (probably an extra $1 of food cost) or better yet, remove it from the bill. Loved this hidden gem! It's a Novi must try. Finding good ramen and sushi outside of the big cities is either a hit or miss. Oishi was a home run! We couldn't decide between sushi or ramen so we decided why not get both. We started off with miso soup, it was $1.50! We got panfried gyoza that was slightly undercooked, but the spicy California roll for $5.50 made up for it. Plenty of wasabi and ginger for two. Cory got the Katsu Kare, amazing. Breaded and friend chicken with the perfect amount of curry sauce. He's been to japan and he says it's almost identical to how it tasted over there. Extremely authentic and flavorful, portions are huge! I got the hot and spicy ramen, holy cow portions are huge and it was fantastic. Grab the napkins though, it's spicy! The server was nice but the restaurant was clearly understaffed and it took at least 30 minutes to receive our food. Love to have been introduced to this spot. The food is pretty on point. Service is better on the weekdays when it's not as busy. Seems like they need more workers for the weekends.. The food comes oit just a tad slower during their busy times, but super fast during their ok times. Depending on who u get, service is really good, or just average. For me, I actually like their udon better than ajishin.. The bowls are larger, a few dollars more. But I just enjoy the udon more. I love the flavor and the crunch of the tempura. They dont go cheap on the shrimp, pretty big, and u get two. I am not a ramen person, but the ramen here is really good! Both times I've tried my friends, and wishing I got ramen instead, which dont usually happens! Their broth are flavorful and different between each type of ramen. The noodle itself is chewy, not limp after soaking in the broth. They give a good portion of pork that's more meaty than fatty. Sushi is pretty good. Almost comparable to one world, which is near the area. Watch out for the wasabi tho, because I got a tuna roll and had too much wasabi in one of the rolls, nearly died. Lol. I've been a long time customer for dining in but had not been due to COVID pandemic of late so decided to take out. My son missed their fried rice so much and I have to agree that it is the best which I cannot replicate at home. Their lunch special has always been the best value in Novi area. I ordered for four and they packaged meticulously to my delight and in a large box to avoid spills. The dining room was open with some customers when picking up for Friday lunch hour. What an amazing experience I have been going to oishi off and on for over a decade now and this is the best it's been. The quality of the food we had was amazing. The appetizers, sushi and ramen were all 5/5. The Prices were very reasonable, the food was flavorful, fresh and lovingly crafted. The sushi was fresh, cold and beautifully presented The service was so good. Our waiter was incredibly sweet and gracious. The atmosphere is relaxing, quiet and comfortable and the place is spotlessly clean. I'm glad I came back after a break and gave it another try. Ill definitely be back again soon! read more

Stopped in for post pandemic treat - takeout to bring home. service began fine - when ordering inside the restaurant - menu very confusing - so went inside to place order - made a $100.00 order- asked for host for some water while I waited patiently and was handed a styrofoam cup and a straw - water no ice - then asked me to wait outside and sit on cement bench - I have a cane and said I would prefer to use a stool - he pointed to some in front if the bathroom doors - I then asked the woman who had taken my order if there was someplace else available to wait - - I asked about the ones in front of the counter - within the restaurant - and was told - they were not available ! The place was practically empty - so there obviously plenty of seating ! Food arrived (3 people working in dining area - 2 full bags of food to carry ( which I had moved to be directly in front of the restaurant ( a warm august evening ) - I nicely asked for assistance to the car - with the food - and was rudely obliged ! Felt like telling them to just keep the food - I have never been so mistreated by anyone like this before! ( impossible for me to carry 2 bags of food with a walking stick - in August's hot weather - no less- I would have just left without my paid for order if I hadn't had a hungry family waiting at home . After all this I had high hopes for dinner. Unfortunately the Food was not very good - soup portion tiny - salad wilted - one main dish not edible - second terribly under spiced. Gyoza was okay - only ' enjoyed' the 'fried rice and an under spiced pork dish. Will never go back again - which is unfortunate - was hoping for a nice meal! No excuse for rude behavior!!! Ended up coming here in a pinch, it'll do but it's not great. My friends and I decided to come here after reviewing the menu online and saw that it was pretty affordable with a variety of Japanese dishes. We noticed as we were looking at the menus that the online version is slightly different than the menus they handed us. A good amount of dishes had their price increased. For example, the tonkotsu ramen went from 8.95 to 10.95. I hope they redo their online menu to reflect the real prices. In addition, the menu does not have a description of food which made it slightly hard to choose what we wanted. I ended up getting the tonkotsu ramen to settle some cravings. They have two versions - shio and miso. The tonkotsu miso tastes like a blend of tonkotsu and miso soup. Shio means "salt" so I would say the tonkotsu shio is more like regular tokontsu ramen. Unfortunately, I thought the broths for the tonkotsu shio and tonkotsu miso ramen were incredibly salty, including the noddles. Maybe their other dishes are better, so unless you enjoy over salted food, I wouldn't recommend the tonkotsu ramens. read more

I think that Oishi is a wonderful place to have good Japanese food. Their udon is warm and delicious and their chicken curry is good, but bland. In terms of sushi, they are just delicious. Their inari is great. Although sushi is not on the menu, there is a slip of paper of all the sushi, and all you have to do is check one off and the quantity. As soon as you walk into the door a seater is always there. The service is quick. But when in comes close to dinner, they close to prepare for it then reopen later. Over all it's a great place for children and the prices are moderate, but I think it is a wonderfully place to try out!! read more
