We've been coming here for a while. The service has always been average. Today it was the worst! We ordered and didn't receive our meal until everyone else did. Except for one table, they all came after us. One woman took our order, another brought us our meal. Didn't come back to the table until I went to the counter to get some more beans. I haven't been here in years! What a huge,huge,huge disappointment! Food was old & disgusting! It def was sitting there since the morning(the waitress said it was sitting under the lamp when we complained about the food).Came here for a farewell dinner for my friend(she's moving to Florida). Then it's like she disappeared after the 2nd time.We had to flag down a worker for water & pressed toasted bread w/ butter(which is free). He wasn't even our waiter I think he was a busboy. We had to flag down a waitress to order after we waited a while.We all ordered food to share. I ordered a pastel (masa w/ pork meat). The masa consists of typically grated green banana, green plantain, white yautía, potato, and tropical pumpkins known as calabazas. My friend's son ordered shrimp w/ spaghetti. My friend ordered chicharron de pollo(crunchy fried chicken). My cousin ordered a Pastelillo de carne(fried turnover W/ ground beef) & and alcapurria(masa fried fritter W/ ground beef). The food came out pretty quick which wasn't a good sign. The chicharron de pollo was cold,hard, & tasted old. It was so hard I could have knocked someone out w/ it. My friend sent it back & they basically threw the same order in the fryer. So now it was oily! The ojo (garlic sauce) for the chicharron smelled like vinegar & smelly feet. It tasted worse!The pastelillo & alcapurria was so dried out & tasted like it was sitting there for a while! Nowhere near fresh!The shrimp had the tail still on it & the spaghetti was so soggy! The pastel tasted disgusting! I couldn't believe how bad the food was! It's so sad b/c this was such a good comfort spot to eat Spanish food! When the waitress asked us how things were going my friend didn't hold back! The waitress was trying to justify why the food wasn't good. She said the food has been sitting under a lamp. I was like who says that. She admitted it wasn't fresh! She was basically trying to argue w/ my friend. She didn't even knock anything off the bill. Absolutely zero ambiance, noisy, but excellent service and huge portions and food is very good. The place was packed early evening. I had a sandwich Cubano, which had tender pork, nicely pressed bread, a side order of red beans and for dessert, tres leches cake. The sandwich was so big, it could have served four people. Of course, I had to take the rest that I couldn't eat, home. All the food that everyone else was having around us looked delicious too. On the pricey side for most things (except sandwiches and soups which is why I got a sandwich) but I would return and try more dishes. Wheelchair accessible. read more

If you do a good Chicharron Mofongo, I'm yours. My Latina friend comes here all the time. I've only had Dominican Mofongo so far. I'm curious to know how it differs from Puerto Rican. I'm so ready for that taste test. Their takeaway game is strong. The service is quick and the portions are large. I had enough Mofongo for two days. It's one of the heavier meals so I can't eat it all in one sitting. Plus it's even better the next day. From the pork crackling to the gravy, it's all delicious. There's lots of seating which might be better than double parking and running in. But it's a busy shopping strip so you can get lucky and find a spot on a side street. I've only eaten in once and can't remember if there's waiter service. It's set up more cafeteria/diner-style than restaurant. Nothing fancy. But I don't need fancy when the food is good. read more

After over a year I decided to go back to the restaurant. The quality of the food was not as great/delicious as before. The pollo sin hueso ( bread boneless chicken) was over seasoned, dry and not soft. The rice was ok but not the best. I have know the owner for over 25 yrs when he first opened a small restaurant. I don't know what has happened with their cooking but the quality of food has went down. The service was fast though I waited a bit for my takeout order. The food has gotten very expensive and the quality of food not the best anymore. It appears as the years go by when I visit the Bronx from out of town the food is not the same. Oh boy where do I even start? First off, always call ahead if you are planning to takeout and if you want to eat outside, make a reservation. The place is packed and I know exactly why. The food here is delicious. I remember a few years back this is our go to spot and it hit the spot. You never know what you have until you lose it. We had ordered a chicken steak smothered in a lemon garlic sauce -- AMAZING. It's white meat chicken that is not at all dry! Had an order of the pernil and I do appreciate how it's not all fat. I wish I had asked for more crispy skin though! And we got an order of tostones and asked for extra mojito. Soooo good. I have also tried the pork chops here which was good too. With (probably) 2 Dominican eateries on the Castle Hill Ave strip, Brisas has a good following and decided for my Mom and I, to bond for a bit. Inside, you'll see Rotisserie chicken racks, the "Cashier" (oh, and when you pay, you slide your money under the thick glass...just plain tacky- but hey, I guess they have a reason), Juice Dispensers with Tamarindo or Passion Fruit and Hot Food Warmers- all, on your right. Plus seating at their long Counter or Dining Tables. It's 'sit yourself' kind of place. Well kept and large Malecón mural opposite their entrance. Our server was cordial and talkative. But I was bothered by several things after that: Strike#1: Ordered beverages and took about 10 minutes to start drinking them. The second she put our juices down, we placed our lunch order- quick. Mofongo isn't a typical Dominican dish, but my Mom went for it. She likes it a certain way and wanted pieces of both- crispy pork skin and chunks of pernil. Our server assured my Mom that the cook prepares it, with a little of both. Ok. Strike #2: Most of the food we ordered, is prepared in advance such as rice and beans- but almost 30 minutes to start eating? Come on now. Red Beans had a nice and thick consistency. Rice? A freaking mound of it- but very tasty and done well. My Shrimp in Garlic Sauce tasted good- sauce was loose for me, but used it to drip it on my yellow rice. Strike #3: Tostones-were in indeed fresh, nice size- not too thin or thick and not "re-fried". However, one bite and it tasted disgusting. The oil in which the Tostones were fried in, was horrible and almost tasted like f*cking lard or some sh*t or was either reused a gazillion times. I was freaking livid. I wanted to let our server know about my Tostones but heck, she was nowhere in sight. Asked another Dominican sister if she can bring our server by, but wasn't found. The icing on the cake was, right towards the end, our server still couldn't be freaking found. Listen, my initial girl was nice. But service lacks majorly and no one arrived to pick up our check. The plus was that according to my Mom, her Mofongo and sauce on the side was cooked to her liking. Tostones were repulsive- the simplest Dominican side dish- I don't get it. But they gotta use fresh oil: stop reusing oil or animal fat or whatever the freak they use. I'm heading for 3 Stars because the fact that Tostones were a major deal breaker for me and lack of attention was a doozy......man, I may be out. read more

3.5 rating - I have been coming to Brisas since 2002, and even though it was much better back in the days, my favorites are consistently good. My go to favorites are the cuban, chicharron de pollo, and chicken soup. I recently had the sancocho and was disappointed with how tough the meat an veggies was. The menu changes daily for the most part but there are some items that remain available everyday like roast pork (pernil), Pollo guisado (Chicken Stew), baked chicken, soup etc. One thing I love about this place is that the food is constantly replenished and is always leaving the kitchen hot and fresh. Food were delicious and they were big portion at affordable price. We ordered the whole rotisserie chicken for 10 dollars, pernil with a side for 12 dollars and little appetizers for 1.5 dollars each. Their dishes were not as greasy as others Dominican restaurants. Portions were huge and we saw majority of people taking doggie bags home. The rotisserie chicken was a little dry on the white meat side, but it was fresh. The pernil was really good and it is highly recommended. They served actual meat and not fat like some others restaurant- we were glad about that too. We ordered flan too-it had a strong vanilla taste and it was semi-solid texture, which we believed they over baked; it was a little small in comparison with the meal and price. It was not our favorite and probably we liked more softer texture. Service was a little slow and it was hard to get a waitress to order or get the bill. This is a criollo 24/7 diner. I have been here numerous times. The food is either a hit or miss probably because there are multiple sets of chefs. My test of a criollo restaurant is the white rice - only 3 ingredients go in the pot however deceptively hard to make well. The mofongo de chicharron is very good as well as the chicken soup. The lechon / peril is also very good. The empanadillas this time were rather dry and lacked flavor. The service is quick and attentive despite how busy this place is around the clock. read more

I couldn't give this place anything less or more than 4 stars. First off this place has good food I don't doubt that at all I haven't tried everything but a few things. The pernil pork rice and beans is good for that order I say its like a 4.5. Lemonade is good too 4 stars for that Alcapurria 1 star tastes horrible steak sandwich is bad too I wouldn't order that again. I also had the flan it wasn't to good either. I guess here it depends on what your buying because not everything tastes good here. this is a high volume restaurant and often times you'll be waiting a while to order food and be overlooked by the waiters, which Is not good for us customers but I can understand that the waiters are constantly putting out orders non stop in which it may be overwhelming to them. read more
