Wow! I had a stellar experience with Colby at AJ's. Our Mazda had a mysterious issue with the parking brake not turning off that mechanics had never seen before. Even the Mazda dealership had no idea what was exactly wrong with the car but wanted to charge four figures to attempt to fix it. We were frustrated because the issue came out of nowhere and our car had never had any issue like this. Colby went above and beyond to research what was wrong and actually come up with a clear explanation for the error. You can tell he knows a lot about the mechanics of cars and is very experienced. He kept us updated day by day on what methods he was trying and got our car back up and running! And the price was about 1/10th of what the dealership was trying to charge us! I imagine that, like most people, I only take the time to write reviews for service that is unusually good or unusually bad. Unfortunately, my short experience with this business falls into the latter category. It is not a review of the quality of this shop's work, because it never got that far. It is a narrative of my interactions with two employees, Sabrina and Colby, and it is written for the benefit of the owner and any potential customers. I called AJ' last week to inquire about scheduling an appointment for three issues with my car: an oscillating idle, a battery light that dimly stayed on even though the battery and alternator had been replaced, and to see why the car felt a little rickety over bumps. I talked with Colby, who was helpful, knowledgeable, and was willing to converse with me at length and answer my questions. During the phone call, we talked about the possibility of cleaning the throttle body to address the idling issue, examining the shock absorbers since the struts had already been replaced, and trying to determine why the battery light stayed on (perhaps a faulty replacement alternator? He'd seen it before). He then told me they sometimes offer a complimentary 31-point inspection, and that I could bring my car in to see what he could find. I felt good about Colby and our conversation, so I made an appointment to bring my vehicle in the following week. When I got to the shop, I was helped by Sabrina at the front desk. She took notes as I explained that the idle was already repaired by someone over the weekend. She told me that if they needed to look into anything more deeply, they may have to do a 'diagnostic inspection' for which there is a charge. I agreed and left the shop. Two minutes later, I realized that Sabrina never told me the cost of the diagnostic inspection, so I called back and asked her to please contact me for approval before being assessed any charge. She agreed. She called me a few hours later - the battery light wasn't even on and the suspension was fine, however there was a small leak in my power steering return hose. She then said that I would not be charged the more extensive ($225) diagnostic fee, but only $85 for the initial inspection fee. When I told her that Colby offered me a complimentary inspection, she started to question me, saying 'I don't mean to be rude, but have you ever had an inspection done by another auto shop that DOESN'T charge a fee?' I told her that I did, however Colby offered me a complimentary inspection and I wouldn't have brought the car in otherwise. She then snidely remarked that she would be willing to remove the $85 inspection fee and replace it with the $225 diagnostic fee instead. Colby was in the office when I went to pick up the car, and I explained to him everything I wrote above. He immediately started in on me with the same line of questioning as Sabrina, asking, 'Have you ever been to an automotive shop that doesn't charge an inspection fee?' I told him I have. He asked me the name of the shop then made a disparaging remark about them, accusing me of 'assuming' there was no charge, and pointing to a sign telling me they had a 'legal right' to charge me $85 because the hourly fee was posted on the wall. He also tried to interrogate me by asking if I did or did not agree to a diagnostic inspection before leaving the shop. I told him that I initially agreed but called back two minutes later asking Sabrina to let me know if the diagnostic inspection had to be done before going ahead with it. After a few more attempts at interrogation, Colby told me I should go give my business to the other shop. And so, I must ask... even if it WAS a misunderstanding on my part, who would refuse to extend good will to a potential life-long customer over a charge they often wave anyway, giving up tens of thousands of dollars in future repairs for all my cars, my wife's cars, and my soon-to-drive children's cars, and knowing that Napa is a relatively small town and I would undoubtedly tell others about my experience at their shop? Colby and Sabrina would, and their stupidity speaks for itself. But maybe it's not stupidity. Maybe they just don't care. Maybe they don't need my business, or it's more important for them to believe they are 'right' and try to argue someone down instead of treating a potential life-long customer with dignity and respect over what seemed to be a miscommunication or misunderstanding. Again, I don't know. But it does lead me to ask an even more important question: what justifies the argumentative, disrespectful, dismissive, and wiseass way they spoke to me? Everyone here's super awesome and helpful. I thought my head gasket went, had my car towed to their lot at midnight, left my key in their dropbox. Called the next day with details, they said no problem, we'll take a look. I asked if they could ALSO take a look at my AC, which has been busted for years now, they said they would. Just a few days later, turns out it's actually just a coolant line not my head gasket. I dropped off my car expecting to pay $3K+, ended up paying under $700, and my AC, which has stumped multiple mechanics, blows cold for the first time in years. Absolutely A+ service, never tried to take advantage of me, can't recommend highly enough. Next time I find myself needing a mechanic, I'll be sure to bring an extra $20 to buy them a round. read more

I brought my 2017 roush supercharged mustang GT in that was a mess from a previous owner who put illegal mods and a pretty terrible tune on it. First time at this auto shop. Colby was very professional over the phone and gave the options of what I needed "fuel level sensor" I opted just to replace the whole fuel pump which was probably the right thing to do in the long run. Gave me a great quote on either the sensor or the pump...wayyyy better than the dealership or a couple other spots. I dropped it off a couple days later and boom done in efficient time. The quote was spot on and gave me advice for getting it smogged later that day. DEFINITELY would recommend. If I have any big issues with my Ram 1500 that's where I'm going. Good job guys read more
