Don't believe the perfect reviews for even half a second. I "just had to" go in and get my water pump changed here, because after 100k miles it's "guaranteed to break down and the owner said it's better to replace it and" and I gave up and went in. And then less than a month later my car, which had been fine for years other than like an oil change or tire replacement, suddenly had a dead battery. Well this could be because the battery needs replacing or the alternator needs replacing. Apparently it was because of the battery, according to this place. Which it wasn't less than a month later the alternator died. I got it towed here, gods know why, mainly to sit there and kind of ball out this place for totally missing a repair that could've stranded me in the mountains a week prior. Instead they just charged me a ton of money and the owner didn't even show up. The "good" reviews are all a song and dance about the owner of this place being "honest" and personable. Well I don't give a shit about that, I care if my car gets fixed correctly when I pay for that to happen. If you care about the same thing go elsewhere. read more

My '01 Wrangler wouldn't start and so I brought it into Pete based on great reviews here. I didn't need the car back right away (which was great for him -- he gets a lot of business!), and so he tried every few days to start the car himself to try and mimic the problem. Sure enough he was finally able to isolate it down to a bad safety starter switch and get my car running good as new! I love learning more about how my car works and getting details about what went wrong, and Pete was more than happy to take the time to explain it all to me. He laid out my options before starting any work too. Over the phone he said it would be about a $250 fix. When I arrived in person to pick up my car he mentioned it was actually closer to $300 but since he mentioned $250 on the phone, he'd honor that price (even though I fully knew this was merely an estimate). Unfortunately as a woman who loves her old car, most mechanics look at me and just see dollar signs. Pete is in this for the long run and I really appreciate both his demeanor and the way he does business/treats his customers. A sad rarity, but I'm so happy I found this place! Summary: Pete is very friendly and knowledgeable. He is also very fair and helpful. My wife and I had a problem with her car when we happened to be visiting Napa for a weekend, and had it towed to him because he was one of the only mechanics open on a Saturday. He told us his rate and said he'd be about an hour to do some analysis, then we were dropped off at the Oxbow market. Later he called us back and said that the car was actually working fine but he had diagnosed what the problem source likely was. I went to pick up the car and expected a charge, but he said that he didn't feel comfortable billing me when he hadn't been able to actually perform any repairs. I know he would have gotten the car fixed fine, and we probably would have saved money with him instead of the dealership, but he helped us get up and running to enjoy the rest of our weekend, wrote down the problems we had, and didn't charge us. I suspected it was the starter (and Pete confirmed that) so had it towed to Pete, he pushed it up his schedule to get it done same day so I could drive home. He's close enough to walk to from downtown and several people told me he's completely trustworthy. When I went to pick up, I realized I've been here before to get a pre-purchase check up on a car my sister-in-law was considering (he recommended we not buy it and had good reasons, he was great then too). Amazing! My car broke down on highway 12 and I needed a tow to a mechanic. I was going to go to the dealership, but after calling them they said my car would take 3 days to fix. This was just through phone diagnosis, not even looking at the car. I began to search YELP and found 3rd street auto. I called Pete - could tell just by talking to him that he knew his stuff, that he wouldn't rip me off and he was great in squeezing me in since I was from out of town and basically stranded. Because my car overheated - I knew I was potentially looking at something expensive. I know very little about cars, so I always feel at the mercy of my mechanic. Pete ran tests and diagnosed my car - he made the necessary repairs to get me back home safely and advised me on things to inform my hometown mechanic. He did this all that day and for a "super" reasonable price! I highly recommend Pete! Pete is always honest with you, shows you exactly what is going on and is straight up about what really needs to be repaired and what can wait if financially you aren't ready. After driving my car across the country at about 100,000 miles, it began making funny noises like it was going to just fall apart while I was driving. I took it to Pete. He's local, and I can walk to work/home from his place which is key for leaving my car there. Although I had gotten my car checked out before I drove cross-country, they only replaced the brakes and spark plugs. Luckily, I made it all the way to California without any problems. It turns out my suspension was shot, which was causing the struts to wear out my tires. Also, my bearings were in terrible shape. All of this work added up to be a lot of money, but Pete was very understanding of how I had just moved and was still trying to get on my feet with my new job. I brought my '02 Mitsubishi Montero Sport in for valve cover gasket replacement (both sides), cam cover O-ring, spark plug & wire replacement, which is a real pain in the.... maintenance that requires removing the intake manifold. All repairs were done on time and at the agreed price. Pete also straightened out a slightly warped valve cover and took extra care in making sure the cover seated correctly against the head. Excellent work performed with an attention to mechanical detail more in common with an aircraft technician then car repair! In replacing the ball joints in my car Pete noticed that the wheel bolts on my car were only engaging with five threads,and alerted me to have this checked out. I had bought replacement rims about six months ago and they were incorrectly installed on the car using the stock bolts. I immediately went to the tire store and they replaced the wheel bolts with the correct thread engagement of thirteen threads. I had an engine light issue that went on on my 4 runner. The code said that I needed to replace my oxygen sensors. My usual mechanic whom I will not mention, was having trouble with replacing these sensors and the light still would not go off. I had a fix it/registration ticket that needed attention in a hurry or I would risk paying an extra $300.00 fine. I read some reviews and felt Pete was my guy. He not only responded to the urgency of my problem but he solved this problem in short order. You know when you are dealing with an expert in their field. Pete is an expert no question. The going hourly rate is high all over the Valley, but Pete's knowledge and wisdom means he doesn't not waste time problem solving, he gets to the issue. Pete had me out of there quickly and he had arranged for me to see his smog referral colleague at a discount. They were waiting for me and they had my vehicle tested and passed in short order... which allowed me to get to DMV with 2 minutes to spare, saving me the $300 fine. Pete was a lifesaver. We had been on vacation in Calistoga and were driving home when we got a charging system warning light on our car. As we approached Napa, we googled for repair shops and chose him based on Yelp reviews. We arrived at the shop a bit before 2pm and the repair was done by 6pm. My car had an intermittent problem. The kind that only occurs when I would hold up traffic. Pete told me to drop it by for an hour or so and he would take a look and try to recreate the problem. Sadly, the issue did not arise in an hour of him driving the car around. He told me that it could be a couple of things, but it would be better to wait until the car actually had the problem while he could look at it rather than fixing any number of things it could be. A couple of weeks later, the problem arose again and I dropped it off. The issue was that the last person who did my tune-up had left the wires too long and they had rubbed down to the wire and were shorting out. Pete replaced the problem wires and even offered to keep the car over night to make sure that it was truly fixed. I have had no problems since and am thrilled to find an honest mechanic. I would definitely recommend this shop to my friends and family! I'll also be a return customer for sure! My rear driver's side window wouldn't roll up anymore on my Ford Expedition. I called about 5 places who all wanted to charge me a diagnostic fee straight away before they would give me an estimate and then charge me by the hour. One place said they'd apply the diagnostic fee to the total cost of the job and the others wouldn't. I understand that you can't get an estimate without knowing the problem first, but in my case, there could only be a couple of options according to You Tube/internet research. How difficult is it to figure out how long it would take for this job and the cost of parts? Anyway, in my opinion, great phone customer service is just as important, if not more, than face-to-face service because that is what gets a patron in the door! Right? Disheartened by lack of effort and discourteous attitudes I received over the phone, I was reluctant to choose any of these places. So, I decided to choose a place reviewed here on Yelp. I realize that there will always be negative reviews for every business. So I figure I'd go by the number of positive reviews vs. negative ones. I ended up calling Third Street Auto Repair and spoke to Pete, the owner. Right away, I got a good vibe from his pleasant tone and eagerness to help diagnose my problem over the phone. He took the initiative and extra time to ask me a few questions and on his handy dandy computer, looked up the possible causes. 10-15 minutes or so later, I had an appointment, the approx time needed to complete the job and the estimated total cost. Wait, whhaaatt? Did I just get an actual estimate OVER THE PHONE without a diagnostic fee upfront? Whoa! SOLD!!! Pete even pre-ordered the part that he thought was most likely the problem. End result, my window was fixed in the estimated time I was given! Yay! But wait, there's more! 1) Pete and the other mechanic (name unknown) was kind enough to remove some of the sticky residue left on my window by the temporary window covering I used. 2) Received an extended warranty on the window part at no additional charge. 3) Pete charged me about $29 less than he originally estimated. My experiences in the past at various locations, especially at the actual car dealerships, have not always been the most pleasant. 9 times out of 10 I am "told" that I need this this and this done to my car and most of the time I have actually already done what was said needed to be done because I treat my car like a baby. Yesterday morning my jeep began making a very loud, screeching sound while driving it. I went online and looked up car auto repair shops in my area and Third street was one of the top reviewed businesses. I called them as soon as they opened on Monday and they got me in within 15 minutes! The owner and his son were both very friendly.
