Our first visit to AJ's. I've driven by here so many times and didn't give it a thought until I saw a YouTube guy talk about it. Growing up Italian in a family that owned 2 Italian restaurants where I worked for many years I know what I like. My personal measurement is the meatball sub and it was delicious. Soft tasty meatballs and a nice homemade sauce. The eggplant parm is one of the best in the area. Angelo's (Stoneham) and Morena's Cucina (Wakefield) are our usual favorites but AJ's is their equal or better. Thinly sliced and lightly breaded. Not bitter at all. About a month ago we had a birthday party for my wife and had it catered by AJ's kitchen We were going to get the food on Saturday but Dave told us he would go in on Sunday morning to get everything ready He did an amazing job with the food and I was able to get it while it was still hot Unbelievable job Everyone was extremely impressed and happy with everything He didn't have to do that but he did Just want to give a thumbs up to him and next time we have a function I will certainly go to AJ's read more

What an incredible find! Small place with friendly and kind owner. Know that there is not much seating but fine for my husband and me. Seems like more of a to go place. But wow. Homemade bread subs - with bread that we wish we could eat every day. We both had the chicken bomb - chicken, peppers, onions and mushrooms with delicious cheese. Ok, so we have lived in Wilmington for years and have gone to AJ's here and there and have used their catering services but today we watched Phantom and it sparked our want for some AJ's! Everything we ordered was delicious! And we have leftovers for another meal! The subs were delicious and his bread is soooo good! When I was picking up my families food, the gentleman in front of me made a comment that he watched phantom this morning himself and that is why he was there! Had not been there for a while, so decided to order the meatball on a braided roll which I have always enjoyed. I very rarely (if ever) post about pricing but when the bill for a soda and sub was $19.03 it just seemed a bit high. Sub was of a fair/adequate size and certainly tasted very good. Braided roll is absolutely the way to go. Nice people. Wish there was a comfortable area to dine in. read more

I always try to make an effort to sample what the locals eat. This small place is located in a working-class neighborhood. I found it on the web and decided to give it a try. I ordered Ziti with meatballs. The sauce was thick with gusto, as one expects from slow-cooking totato sauce. It's a bit on the salty side (to me), perhaps it's something a tired body needs after a long day of toiling. I observed that most of the patrons are the take-out kind. If one needs a quick dinner after a long day at work, this is definitely a good place to stop by. In that regard it deserves 4 *. The portion is generous and I felt satisfied after devouring the pasta and meatballs. read more

my son and I went to this restaurant yesterday at around 5:00 PM. We ordered the 2 foot long steak and cheese calzone. This was probably the best calzone we have ever had, we didn't come close to finishing it even though we thought we would.we got a table with no problem and barely beat the dinner rush. The staff was fantastic and made sure everything we had was correct. I highly recommend this restaurant to anybody that has a appetite. well done! read more

My friend and I tried this place since we were starving. We both ordered the Penne with cheese. This very young girl waited on us and proceeded to hand out our order on PAPER PLATES, NOT EVEN STYROFOAM...I asked if she had anything else to use and she said no. I then asked for about 4 more paper plates so that the liquid sauce would not fall through the other plate..she grudgingly did...food was passable.. Never again read more

Had seen a AJ's on Phantom Gourmet and heard locally it was fantastic so I was in the area and decided to phone in a BBQ chicken in a wheat wrap. When I arrived a very lovely young lady at the counter greeted me and my wrap was already ready. Services is extremely friendly and efficient, excellent value ($8.99 for the wrap). The wrap was thin (which I prefer) but held everything nicely, chicken was SO tender & perfectly cooked not to mention generous, perfect amount of sauce, shredded lettuce and diced tomatoes. The bonus - the slices of bacon, which I've never had in a bbq chicken wrap. Can't wait to return again to try their pizzas and calzones! read more

Aj's has always been pretty well known in Wilmington and I order every so often. As with most places, it's gotten expensive, so I'm not sure if what you get justifies the price anymore. I got a large steak n cheese calzone and a small (like individual sized) pepperoni pizza, and if came to $50. That's not a typo. It's not a knock on them. I get they have to charge what they have to charge to stay in business. Add in a tip for the girls (for literally just ringing you up) and your closing in on $60 for this. Was it spectacular? No. Was it tasty? Not $50-$60 tasty. Just my opinion. read more

The staff is always friendly, seem genuinely interested when I order something custom or changed from the menu. It wasn't the standard eye roll and big sigh like most other places. Asked questions for clarification to make sure my order was accurate. They produced a lunch better than I could have hoped for. Of course the bread made daily is a nice touch. I have been ordering from AJ's kitchen for ages. Tonight I attempted to order and they declined my order saying it had to be at least $15.00. Mind you the distance is 1.7 miles. I always tipped the drivers decent and at work we have ordered plenty from Aj's. They forgot their customer base that was loyal to them even through the pandemic. Maybe it is due to the bride not asking specific questions, or maybe it is just the caterer. But if you are catering an event, you would think that serving utensils would accompany the chaffing dishes along with sterno's. But what am I to say. I have 100 guests waiting. Discovered AJ's today. My daughter and I had dinner. We got 2 subs, Italian and steak & cheese with a fries. Friendly staff. They were doing a ton of takeouts. This place makes their own breads and even sells jarred marinara sauce! Plus 2 stars for that! A calzone eating challenge 1 star! Great italian sub loaded with fresh coldcuts! Litterally just litterally left AJ's Kitchen. Ordered a large roast beef sub, chips and a soda. It all came to just over $13. problem is they have the smallest "Large" sub in town for around $9. The roast beef was scant and brown. No pink at all. I know people really like the pizza and calzones but the sandwich was truly a disappointment to me. I will not be back for subs when there are at least 5 better places right here in town. i will try there pizza sometime. read more

One of the go to places for Pizza in town. They make a solid pie with a decent crust. I also enjoy the sandwich offerings. Staff is always friendly and they always give you an honest time estimate on your food order which I appreciate. If you're having a pizza night you can't go wrong with AJ's. read more

I have been here a few times prior to covid and had zero issues and perfect food. I went for an in house order and waited from beginning to end 8 mins. Pretty quick. But to their process I will never go back. When ordering inside you have a clear view of the kitchen staff. I had gotten there 45 mins after they opened. The staff in the front wore their masks and gloves and stayed apart from one another the best they could. The kitchen staff can't be bothered to wear any of their masks properly. NONE OF THEM WORE GLOVES. There is a sign for drivers to wash their hands prior to going out back, one driver went in and out 3 times never once washed his hands or wore his mask above his chin. I get the 2 subs and arrive home 7 mins later. Everything was cold to the touch. Putting everything in the microwave was a waste of time. Everything I ordered was dumped. I immediately messaged the owner and he couldn't bother to respond. Anyone know the board of health, that reads this, should do a surprise cleanliness walk thru. They should fail miserably. Do your health a favor, do not buy food from this untrained, disgusting, filthy place. read more

I haven't had the pizza yet, but I have had the Fat Candy sub. The bread is very good although it was a bit soggy when I unwrapped the sub from my takeout order. Chicken was pinkish colored (from the Boom Boom sauce) and a little sweet. The pizza pockets were pretty good, superior to many of AJ's rivals. Excited to come back and try the pizza pies. read more

Let me tell you why this place has my favorite subs in the area. Their bread is fresh baked and frankly I would be happy just eating loaves of it for dinner. However, I get turkey and cheese here with onions, pickles and lettuce. Here's the catch: they dice all those goodies. Which means when you take a bite you don't have an onion dangling from your mouth or a pickle smacking against your chin. Each bite has equal parts of meat, cheese, lettuce, pickle, and onion. And, even more impressive, you can save half your sandwich and pick it up 2 hours later and the bread's not all soggy and sad. So why not 5 stars? I'm not a fan of the brand of chips they sell and I wish they had fountain soda rather than bottled soda. I might stop in for the pizza one day, but they're sandwiches are too good to pass up! read more

Ordered delivery last night for my daughters birthday what A nightmare....Ordered two large two Steak and cheese subs they came with no cheese and ice cold. a chicken Caesar salad completely raw Chicken pink bleeding chicken. A steak tip sub cold....... I caled ack and spoke to someone who said their name was Anna offered to give them back this food and returned for properly made food after several minutes of trying to explain to them she had told me they were close 45 minutes before they said they were going to close which was 8 :15 Close at nine. All this started at about 630 this evening. Completely ruin are a little birthday celebration my daughter the birthday girl in question who wanted to chicken Caesar salad is also pregnant. Had to find another restaurant to get a salad for my daughter... they told me to call back tomorrow when the manager would be working I called back and the manager want to send me a new salad 14 hours later never even said he was sorry did not want to want to return my money or replace the whole order My daughter did not want the Salad next day... I was led to this place by the phantom gourmet. I saw their Italian sub on T.V. and thought it looked very appetizing. So naturally I decided to go here and give some of their subs a shot. First I've tried the Steak Bomb. It was great, the bread was very fresh and soft. The steak was quality, and tasted great. Probably one of the best sub shops in the area. The calzones look incredible, just have not tried one yet. Next time I will for sure. I didn't try the Italian, but it did look great, and from word of mouth it is as good as it looks. The portions are a good size, so I have not left here still hungry. The dining area is a little small, but all the times I've been here I have not had any problem being able to sit and eat. But, I could see at lunch time it running out of seats pretty quickly. The staff is friendly as well, which is always a plus. I look forward to trying more food from their menu. read more

So why AJ's Kitchen thinks charging $32 for a large deli ham and cheese calzone makes sense is beyond me. Especially when they used to charge $20.99 for the same item. AJ's Kitchen has always been hit-or-miss with me. Their pizza and subs are pretty good, but their salads stink. AJ's service is always what kills me. The first time I tried to order delivery - 8:30pm on a Friday night - I was told that they were closing at 9:00 and were no longer taking delivery orders. I understand not taking orders at closing time, but it was 30 mins before closing and I live right down the street! My roommate really likes their pizza, so we thought we'd try again a few months later. We were told that if they were too busy and were not taking delivery orders. Really?? Isn't this how most pizza places make money? We opted for pickup. Every time we've tried to order since we've had about the same results - slow, rude service or no delivery option. This place is always busy and always packed. All for good reason. They have the most amazing subs! Its really the delicious homemade bread that makes it so wonderful... then they really load it up with yummy toppings. This is one of my favorite places to get a sub. Italian, steak bomb, or a specialty sub it doesn't matter- you cannot go wrong. Just as a heads up, if it is busy or late in the day, they can run out of bread.
