Excellent sushi place! The menu contains a myriad of fresh flavorful sushi with additional great daily specials on the board. The place is small but very clean and cozy which seems to have a large clientele. The staff is uber friendly, helpful and the service is great. My wife and I have eaten there a dozen or so times on both weekend and week nights, and the place always has a good number of customers enjoying the food and friendly ambience. Stopped in for a quick dinner with my wife and young kids. We were greeted and seated immediately and service was quick and professional. There was an extensive list of house rolls, but most seemed to be very slight variations on each other so it was hard to discern which ones to try. Nigiri selections were typical and the pricing was on par with the area. My wife had their variant of the shrimp tempura roll and was very pleased with it. I sampled 6 different nigiri options and all were fine for a casual dinner, although the unagi seemed a little dry. My kids had the gyoza, which they liked, and the Aka balls (strange little cream cheese and peas? things that looked like fried tortellini), which were like balls of molten lava. I'd definitely stop back in when the sushi urge strikes and I am in the exurbs of Northern VA. read more

Aka Sushi is catering to its local market with a smaller, streamlined menu of items that sell well in this area. This is good in that it helps keep things fresh. If you like modern sushi rolls, you can't go wrong and that is where the best parts of the menu are at. Don't venture to the more authentic "edges" of the menu for things like Ikura (salmon roe) or Tako (octopus). Nigiri (a clump of rice with fish on top) is cut small. Some dishes can be padded with cheap filler such as lettuce and imitation crab. Imitation crab is presented as a premium cut of sushi in the nigiri combos. Aka Sushi is in the Bristow Harris Teeter shopping center, rapidly becoming a popular dining destination as more local restaurants are opening up there. This restaurant has been open for three years, and I am sure is starting to benefit from increased traffic to the area. As I have mentioned in other reviews, sushi in Manassas is quite different than sushi in DC or in a big city. We have plenty of Korean-owned suburban Americanized "hibachi with sushi" restaurants here. These provide a variety of modern sushi rolls with a heavy Kimbap influence, especially in roll diameter. You'll be happy until you make the mistake of having truly excellent, fresh, authentic Japanese sushi and resetting your level of expectations to a whole new level. My son and I checked out Aka sushi for lunch. The interior is nice and very clean, there is a cute little three-seat sushi bar and around 10 small tables in the dining room. Service was prompt. The menu concentrates on sushi in its various forms, omitting teriyaki, udon and ramen. Sushi rolls are the emphasis. There were specials on a whiteboard that offered a couple types of katsu. I can respect the smaller menu as it is hard to offer quality udon and ramen in a market with little demand for it. To my surprise I saw chirashi on the menu! In order to try out a variety of things, we ordered a maki (roll)/nigiri (fish on rice) combo, the spicy Chirashi, and my patented sushi restaurant torture test, some Ikura! Here is where reality started to set in. The more traditional maki (rolls) were well-formed, and not oversized. The nigiri was cut smaller than I am used to, except for a super-sized imitation crab stick nigiri! I'm not sure how imitation crab ends up being served as a premium cut of fresh fish - that is a blatant cheap filler item. The nigiri was not bad, but also was not excellent. It was on par with what is expected in this area. The Chirashi at first looked amazing, but some digging into the bowl found a layer of rice on the bottom, several inches of chopped lettuce, a scattering of tiny 1/4"-1/2" cuts of fish, a large amount of shredded imitation crab stick, furikake, and some padding on top. The spicy part of the spicy Chirashi was a side of some super-tasty Korean red pepper sauce that could be added to the Chirashi if needed. However, the strong flavor of the sauce, the tiny bits of fish, the large amount of lettuce and rice, and the saltiness of the furikake ended up with this being a "salad", not a nice bowl of Chirashi. The Ikura nigiri is quite a challenge in a suburban sushi restaurant. It isn't ordered often enough to be a focus of quality, so is one of the first corners that can be cut. This Ikura was not "crystal clear red jewels of taut skin popping in your mouth with eye-rolling waves of delicious". It was also not something I would want someone to try Ikura for the first time with. But again, ordering Ikura might not be that fair of a test for the area this restaurant is in. Still, Aka Sushi has good service, a nice interior, great rolls and for the local market is a solid sushi option. read more

Delicious sushi! Everything is fresh! I had the dreamboat roll along with a Cali and Philly Roll. The dreamboat roll is so good! It is a Cali Roll wrapped in salmon topped with house sauce and baked. It melts in your mouth! I also would recommend the avocado salad with peanut sauce. My husband got the "Sushi Deluxe"- tuna roll and 7 pieces of Sashimi with miso soup and salad for $20. Not a bad price at all. He said the surf calm and unagi were very fresh and loved the miso soup. Only complaint I have are the drinks- $1.75 PER CAN of soda. They bring you a closed can of soda with ice and there are no free refills. You pay per can. So we get water, no big deal. Glad we found quality sushi close to home! read more

Hands down, the best sushi/sashimi in the Manassas area. Also, they have a stand-out miso soup (at $1.50 per serving, I always get a couple to go for my vegetarian bride.) Other places around may offer better prices, but they don't have the freshness and the proportion of rice to fish is waaay too high - especially the all you can eat buffet places. They're not perfect - some roll missteps as categorized below, but they're consistent. The unagi is superb. I've always found the staff to be pleasant and attentive. It's not Japan (I've been 3 or 4 times) or Hawaii (28 times), but for Manassas, it's stellar. read more

Aka Sushi was a great find. My husband and I were driving around and decided we were in the mood for sushi. We went in at 2pm so it wasn't busy at all. In fact we were the only table. We were greeted right away. The restaurant is small so I would get there early if your going out for dinner. We ordered Salmon, Spicy combo, the New Volcano Roll, and the Captain Crunch. The sushi was fresh and the presentation was great. I would highly recommend the Captain Crunch roll. I read a review that recommended it and it did not disappoint. Great choice!! This mom and pop sushi restaurant is a total hidden gem. I've had a lot of sushi in a lot of places, some of them tasty, some of them overrated or questionable. This place is the opposite of pretentious, it's the real deal. Just excellent sushi done to an impeccable standard and it is a really nice place with great service. Who would guess that some of the best sushi in the DC area is in a shopping center way out here? But it is. It is seriously better than the sushi that I have had in a lot of downtown places. The prices are reasonable, especially when you consider the quality. I love the dynamite salad, and as for the rolls, you pretty much can't go wrong with whatever you order. They are very close from my house and I'm regular here. It's decent and service is friendly. I especially like to sit at the counter and chat with the chef.
