I visited Sakura Grill for lunch today - my first visit. I sat at the bar and looked over the offerings. I ordered their Poke Bowl - with everything. Unfortunately, they do not offer an option to serve the Poke over greens - just rice options. I suppose you could order it with simply no rice. Next time I will ask that. I ordered with Sushi rice. I applied some soy sauce - and requested some Sriracha sauce to spice things up. Protein-wise - the Poke Bowl included salmon, two kinds of tuna, and Yellowtail. I have come here two times for lunch to go; the first time, the food tasted pretty good, however, left me with an uneasy stomach ache for a couple hours after. I come here the second time, a Wednesday afternoon, for to go, and got the Teryaki chicken. It honestly just looked fake if that makes sense (didn't look fresh that's for sure). Nonetheless, I hadn't eaten all day and was so hungry I ate most of it. 3 hours later, I am in severe stomach pain and have extreme nausea. 24 hours later, I can't do anything except try to make it to the bathroom every 10 minutes. This was an awesome spot in Gainesville for Japanese food. I was really craving some sushi at the time, so of course I got the Eel lover's combo which came with some Eel Nigiri, Eel and Avocado roll, and Eel and Cucumber roll. All of the sushi was delicious and the fish tasted very fresh! Auntie got the chicken Teriyaki Lunch meal, which came with a generous portion of chicken with some rice and vegetables. One thing she definitely wishes is that there were some more vegetables that came with the meal, but other than that everything was cooked perfectly. Nanny got the steak and shrimp meal off of the regular means, which can be seen to have more vegetables. This was plenty of food here and the steak was cooked just liked she had asked. Lastly, my girlfriend got the steak teriyaki bento box, which came with 3 pieces of a California roll, shrimp tempura, 3 vegetable tempura, salad, vegetables, and fried rice. This was a ton of good food for a relatively cheap price, and I would definitely recommend getting the bento box when you come here. WOW! What a great place for an afternoon lunch. My husband really enjoys hibachi, especially the fried rice, while I enjoy sushi and sake. We typically sit at the bar because we do not need any fancy flare at a hibachi grill. We were greeted promptly and handed menus. I ordered a sushi roll from the neon board that listed some of the specials. The roll I selected was called The Amanda Roll. It had spicy tuna inside, topped with salmon and mackerel(?), spicy mayo with each piece topped off with a jalapeno, YUM! I also order a cold, unfiltered sake. Delish! My husband ordered the veggie hibachi with a Sapporo beer. I was still wanting more so my second roll was the Salmon Avocado roll, yum! The salmon was fresh and the avocado was perfect. I'll say first that the craving is what drove my group here the other night, and as far as meeting expectations and hitting the spot, it did the trick. Is it my favorite go-to spot now? Probably not. We had a variety of items - sushi, bento, hibachi, so we got a broad sense of the menu even though there is so much menu left to try, of course. The sushi was alright - I can't put my finger on what, but the California roll didn't taste quite the way you expect. It tasted like it should but something was missing or a component was a different quality than other restaurants use. Regardless, the soups/salads were actually really great and had a lot of flavor. A far cry from what you expect with the 'soup/salad that comes with my junk' routine you know and love from hibachi places. No bland broth here, so I am compelled to maybe try the ramen everyone is raving about. The food tasted just fine overall and it wasn't anything sensational or terrible. The service was really, really slow. For being one of two tables there, it felt like years passed in between visits from our server and we did get a little antsy to go when we sat long enough. The one thing I will conclude with, and I don't want to spoil this for anyone else - is that before even leaving the restaurant I felt the familiar wave of food poisoning. Possibly the quickest/record time of my life, but once you've been struck with this luck you remember that feeling forever. I hadn't eaten much that day after lunch and this was a good 7 hours later; I was in misery as we were leaving. Lunch was a salad and a bottle of water, so I think I survived that meal unscathed although obviously I was pretty hangry by dinnertime. I don't have any food allergies or history of intolerance, despite having had a similar experience elsewhere at a hibachi place in recent history. I suspect it was undercooked food in that case (hindsight is 20/20 right? trust your gut, people.). Otherwise, I eat shrimp and raw tuna regularly, and have been to many hibachi and sushi restaurants (too many, it's my favorite, so let's leave it at 'many' times in my life) without incident. I've seen a physician who ruled out anything suspicious aside from my crappy a$$ luck. It seems 2021 is the year of the bad juju for me. The last two hibachi places though - almost instant onset or gradually building misery shortly thereafter: bending over, rocking back and forth like a psycho clutching my outsides wishing I was clutching my insides to calm them down, nearly-doing-Lamaze, begging to be left for dead kind of fate. This could mean my days of eating at hibachi may be numbered or I need to pray first, or perhaps my food has been undercooked or touching undercooked food near it (possible, hibachi is usually prepared on one surface), there was a bacterial invader, improperly stored/prepared food, I am unluckiest person on earth....the list of possibilities continues, but it was not a fun experience for the rest of the night and the only trigger was eating. So, the wide possibilities of of this trigger, seeing as it was a lot of raw fish, communally cooked foods or stored foods, point to something during the meal either just not being what it was supposed to or a brand new and selective food intolerance that only manifests when I enter these dining circumstances......the latter seems far fetched, but I will stop short of saying they gave me food poisoning as an indictment. I may have the worst luck in the world but I will err on the side of attributing some % of the aftermath on the possibility it's a strange anomaly with 0 blame but the universe. read more

I was seated and while sitting there, had to listen to the staff having a loud conversation in her language while she was cleaning up. Eventually I said to the waitress "she is rather loud" hoping someone would get the hint, but the loud talking continued. I ordered two sushi rolls...I don't even remember what they were because they were not that great. I had to ask for more ginger, but actually had to get up and ask because nobody was coming to check on me (come on now, I'm the only customer here!). I have been eating sushi since the early 90's. I have always eaten everything that I ordered. I could not finish either my spicy tuna roll or spicy yellowtail roll. They were crunchy. They has some form of breading on them. They also were in NO WAY spicy. I hated every bite. The server was nice but their sushi truly was horrible. 1) this is not a hibachi "cook in front of you" Japanese steakhouse. This is a sushi place that also sells hibachi grill style fare made in the back of house. Had no idea until we walked in. Didn't try the sushi so I won't speak to that product or quality. Sushi chef "looked" the part and entertained our five year old (even though we didn't order any) since the cook at the table we promised wasn't going to happen. 2) everything from the hibachi/teriyaki tastes canned and frozen. A few years back, the Japanese sushi industry landed a bunch of media attention for announcing that it was planning to launch its own equivalent of Italy's well known DOC designation. Sakura Grill alone is the reason for this to exist. Basically, if you take everything that's really prized about Japanese cooking--freshness, tradition and craftsmanship most of all--and then throw them out the window...you have this place. Jiro dreams of deep fried Mars bars rolls nigiri with cream cheese frosting? Seriously, it wasn't that I was afraid of getting ill (although I think some fish had been sitting for awhile) but rather that there was little care here in everything from service to presentation. "Spicy" rolls had barely a hint of hotness, for example, and dishes just sat on the table uncleared. I have the sense that there may well be good stuff on this place's menu and it's heavy carry out business and large clientele indicates that it's owners are probably serving the local area well. I wouldn't go here again myself but the size of the menu and popularity must mean that hey...this place serves the market. read more

They take forever and rarely check on you even though we've never seen the place half full. Its pretty expensive, but we found a hack to save money. I get sushi and my wife and daughter get hibachi. The trick is to order the kids hibachi. Its much cheaper, but still a lot of food for one person. Using the kids order hack we have been getting a lot of delivery during the pandemic, but recently the food has not been as good. The sushi rolls fall apart and the chicken has a boiled texture.
