I am not a huge sushi eater, but my family and I both really enjoyed a light dinner after the spa...thanks to yelp showing me what was around. Matsu sushi had great reviews and I can see why. We came around 7:00pm on a Sunday night, and it was pretty full but luckily we were sat right away mear the sushi bar. We ordered the sushi and sashimi combo, chicken teriyaki, and Sapporo. The sushi and sashimi seemed fresh and were tasty. The chicken teriyaki came on a hot plate with lots of veggies under it, and a serving of rice on the side (just fyi--doesn't come as a bento box). Waitresses were kind and didn't rush us. Gave us all appetizer salads, miso soup despite only ordering 2 entrees. Service was good. The restaurant was clean, yet a bit small. If I could put it shortly, the sushi is slightly above average. It's not the best sushi I have ever had like some of the reviews are raving about. I cannot tell if it's because they used to be great or maybe the taste is not consistent all the time. I was glad to be able to find a sushi restaurant with White Tuna available though. It was quite satisfying but again it wasn't the best white tuna I've ever had. I feel like something is missing in the taste of the sushi but I cannot pinpoint exactly what. Maybe I wasn't feeling the love the chef had for his/her sushi. The place isn't huge but also isn't small so you should be able to find an open table without issue. My wife and I used to come here all the time, like 2 times a week for dinner. Then life got busy and we came back after a coupleonths and it looks like it went under new ownership. The first time we sat down under the new management, their ikura didn't seem as fresh as usual. We chalked it up to just new ownership quibbles. Today, I go in to make a to go order at 2:15pm. They close at 2:30pm and reopen later. I walk in and the 3 waitresses and 3 sushi chefs are hanging around the cash register laughing and didn't even acknowledge my presence. When they finally noticed they had a customer inside one of the waitresses comes up to tell me they are closed. I tell them it's 2:15pm and I'm getting a to go order so I'm not even sitting down. There's no one in the restaurant so I don't understand why they couldn't make a sushi order to go in 15 minutes before closing for lunch. If you're not going to serve food 15 minutes before closing, perhaps you should close at 2:15pm. Well, I can take this restaurant out of the rotation. Such a shame as the previous owners are what made this restaurant great. This new ownership has a lot to be desired. With service and food quality down, it's only a matter of time before this place goes belly up because there are certainly other great restaurants in the same shopping center. read more

I'm unable to eat raw fish, but my family wanted sushi so I ordered cooked fish rolls like unagi, shrimp tempura, and a specialty roll where it had shrimp tempura with spicy mayo listed on their menu. Came home to find spicy tuna and the staff was arguing that I was wrong and that's it's not listed that way on the site.... despite multiple views on the menu that that's what was listed. I'm not sure what they're arguing for and blatantly just lying - I already spent $100 on your mid tasting sushi..why would I fight to keep $15? Owner was rude and didn't want to hear it. You literally can get shut down for falsely advertising ingredients..if someone had a severe allergy and went by your items blindly, you'd get sued. Never returning and do not recommend to ANYONE. I didn't enjoy my meal here at all. The service was not the best and the food was disappointing. I ordered the katsu don (donburi) and it sounded and looked delicious, but I was let down with the first bite. Everything about it was bland, from the egg to the fried pork cutlet. There was no sauce in the bowl or on the side. I wished they would've offered at least tonkatsu sauce. I had to use the soy sauce on the table and chilli pepper powder (given by the server for the curry udon) to add more flavor to my dish, but it didn't help and was still pretty bad. The katsu wasn't crispy enough and some pieces were chewy. My friend's curry udon was okay, but also lackluster. I struggled to finish my meal. The servers were decently attentive, but the host decided to just hand us our checks once she noticed we were done eating. I didn't feel too rushed, but it wasn't very tactful. Ambiance was just okay, but it got quite loud when it was packed and the tables were quite close together. I would not come back and do not recommend this restaurant. read more

I have been to many sushi place in the area and this is my favorite sushi restaurant so far. I have order sushi (regular/deluxe) and fried oysters from them for to go multiple times as well, but I am just going to write the review of my experience on the night of my visit to the restaurant. That night I ordered the sea urchin sushi, which was on their daily special. The urchin was very rich and creamy. Delicious! Then I got the all cooked sushi, because I just felt like it, and it didn't disappoint. (Their regular sushi is also excellent but my stomach didn't feel too good that night so I limited myself from eating too many raw stuff). My boyfriend doesn't like seafood so he got the Beef Donburi - it was well prepared- full of flavor and the balance of amount of meat vs veggies were great as well. He loved it. Server was super nice and attentive. The restaurant was busy but she didn't forget to check up on us. Even it was busy, the place was kept clean. No loud music so we could enjoy our conversation over the dinner. Will definitely continue visit/order delivery!! read more

If you're craving a well thought of, mouth watering, and exploding flavors in your mouth, this is the place. The photos of the sushi in their menus were helpful and served as is. No disappointments there. We ordered the "yellowtail lovers". The yellowtail sashimi could have been sliced thinner in my opinion to enable that melting effect in your mouth possible. Matsu has a pretty standard menu that many sushi restaurants have, which consists of basic and specialty rolls, fresh salads, teriyaki, yakisoba, and more. But what puts Matsu above most sushi restaurants in the northern Virginia area is the exceptional quality in the sushi. The sushi rolls were rolled with attention to detail and it showed in the presentation. They also tasted fresh and flavorful. For the specialty rolls, you really don't need soy sauce because I think the flavors are so well-balanced enough that even the slightest dip of soy sauce would be overpowering. But of course, please dip your sashimi in soy sauce! Service was friendly and attentive. Sushi came out in decent time. The price value is pretty average, but appreciable because I think the sushi quality is above average. Overall, Matsu is a pretty solid sushi restaurant with an extensive menu. I went for lunch with some friends and all of us liked it! The food came out quick and we were able to take advantage of their lunch menu for cheaper yet delicious food. I am trying to eat healthier so I ordered the sake bowl. No it was not a bowl of rice wine. It was actually a bowl of salmon sashimi with rice and other random pickled veggies around it. The salmon sashimi was nice thick and fatty! I havent been eating carbs so the sushi rice underneath was heavenly. The meal also came with a tiny bowl of miso soup and some salad.
