I was turned into this place by one of my election coworkers. We got takeout while we were working and it was pretty doggone good. So much so that this is where we order from when we have a hankering for Chinese at home. Large menu so there is entry to choose from and so far everything has been great. We had an experience here a couple of months ago which left me feeling I'd never order from this restaurant again. Well, with some help from Patrick, I was able to get a dish I really like. We ordered the chicken fried rice (could have used a little more chicken) and I ordered the (either Hunan or Szechuan?- I wasn't sure of the difference and the male taking the order couldn't explain) white meat chicken extra spicy with no vegetables. Bang average. I do not understand the hype for this place. Egg roll wasn't very good, too doughy, fried rice is just rice with soy sauce, and the chicken with broccoli sauce is nothing to write home about. Young Chow Cafe in Haymarket is my go-to and will remain so. read more

Since the closure of my favorite, but less than ideally located Chinese restaurant China East... I've been craving good Chinese. Hunan Cafe was a huge disappointment. We ordered the Spring Rolls and Egg Rolls... both of which were fried in oil that was not hot enough, this resulted in a mouthful of grease. The stuffing in both rolls was underwhelming and lacked flavor. Next up was Pork Fried Rice. A staple in any Chinese restaurant. This should be a slam dunk. Sadly, it wasn't. The non traditional manner that they choose to marinate the pork in made it taste of game. I found it off putting. The pork in most fried rice comes from the trimmings of Chinese Spare Ribs. It is usually bright red in color and tastes of the sweet marinade. This pork was almost gray in color and had no discernible seasoning. It tasted gamey and was way over cooked... like thrice heated leftovers. Finally, we tried the Happy Family. What couldn't be more decadent and enjoyable than Beef, Chicken, Shrimp and Lobster sharing the same plate? It was another swing and a miss. The portions of each protein were balanced. A pleasant surprise. The knife work on the chicken and beef were very strange choices. I've never needed a knife and fork to eat Chinese food until now. The cuts of beef were considerably larger than a person could consume in a single bite. Certainly impossible to eat with chopsticks. The chicken cuts weren't clean either. They were misshapen with smaller bits dangling from larger bits. At one point, I was scratching my head trying to identify the protein. The lobster tail was left in the shell. I had to put my fingers into the brown sauce to pry out the meat. The lobster was also over cooked and rubbery. I wound up throwing everything in the bin half-eaten. I don't expect fine dining for Chinese or any restaurant that specializes in take away food... but there is a standard. Hunan Cafe is well below that standard. I will not be ordering from them again. I suggest that you avoid it at all cost. read more

Really wanted to like this place but it fell flat of our expectations. Husband and I ordered a few small dishes (General Tso's, Green Beans, and Mongolian Beef along with Hot & Sour soup) and nothing was what we expected. The hot & sour soup was neither hot or sour -- turned out to just be brown and starchy with soy thrown in. The Mongolian Beef was oddly sweet and was 90% sauce with little to no beef/green onions. The green beans were lackluster--not at all blistered/wrinkly like they should have been -- and lacked salt. The only "saving grace" was the General Tso's which also was over-sweet and over-sauced. To top it all off, we had placed our order online and paid in advance but were given a hard time at pick up. Staff insisted we hadn't paid several times, to which we had to respond with producing the online receipt that they had generated at the time we placed the order. Overall, the entire experience of take out front this place was so subpar that we won't be going back. I hope for their own sake both the food and customer service improve in the future. Definitely recommend passing on this place -- not worth the time or money. read more

I took my fiancé to this restaurant today. We found the food delicious and the service was great. We had the lo mein and it is far better than any other lo mein we have ever had in this area. Plus, we ordered spring rolls and they two were quite delicious. we will be making Hunan Café as our go to for Chinese food for years to come. also, my fiancé commented on the white rice that we ordered and she thought it was authentic Chinese rice much better than other places we have ordered the same. Try the lemon chicken eaten as a salad! Yummy! We're converts now after trying a lot of their dishes! I miss Taste of Asian's General Tso's Chicken though. Too bad they've closed. My favorite Chinese places are always either nice sit-down restaurants, or scary-looking holes-in-the-wall. Hunan Cafe is the other type: the clean, tiny, franchisey take-out-focused place. There are tons of places like this around, any they generally serve bland, inoffensive lunch specials for nearby offices with limited options. I've been to at least a dozen such places, rarely more than once. I drive past Hunan Cafe every week day, and never gave it a second thought, until, desperate for something new, my wife and I gave them a shot on a Thursday night, based on their Yelp rep. Let me tell you, it is shockingly good Chinese for what looks like a strip-mall working lunch joint. Everything tastes so fresh, better than my favorite nice sit-downs. The young guy who usually takes our orders is a delight after a long work day, and folks who seem to be owners or managers are friendly and personable. Who likes to be patronized by potential providers of at least several meals a week? As I prepare to move; I'm taking my search for restaurants in my new neighborhood seriously. Today I tried Kung Pao take out from the Gainesville store of this 14 location chain. Looked like just about every other place these day; Take out & delivery only. When I got to my new home a few minutes away and popped open the tray; I noticed lots of fluffy looking random shaped and sized "chicken". If there was any chicken in that menagerie; I had a real hard time finding it amongst that flotsam. ( The owner later stated that they don't coat their chicken) The first taste was of deep fried oil that probably get's its fair share of use. Strike 1: no stir fry taste The next issue was lack of any other flavor; I did ask them to leave out green peppers but the few bits of carrots, celery and bamboo shoots looked bright but tasted dead: Strike 2 The final nail in Hunan Cafe's coffin was the canned retort from the owner when I called and asked: do you actually have any chicken in your "Kung Pao chicken". No matter how good the food is, a bad service experience wipes the good away. I would consider myself a loyal customer having supported this business from the time it opened until now. Personally, I think the food is very good. I would even go as far to say it's the amongst the best in the area. Unfortunately, a few days ago I walked into the restaurant to pay for and pick up an order that I placed over the phone. I am a frequent customer and they know me. On most occasions when I approach to pay my order is waiting. Without asking, my invoice is presented, I pay and I go. On Wednesday, the man at the register, who has seen me countless times before looks at me as I wait to be either greeted with a hello or told that my order was in process, and asks in a very rude manner what did I want. I was shocked and surprised at his tone. Matching his energy, I asked him if he had a problem (or I said something to that effect). Long story short, his reception was deplorable and I left without my order. A few minutes later he calls and asks if I plan to pick up my order! No apology not nothing. It was laughable yet sad all at the same time. I was hungry, and at that point eating an ice cream cone trying to process why familiarity breeds contempt. I've had a hard time finding good fresh tasting Chinese food in the Manassas and surrounding areas. I have been here before and remembered the food was good. Went last night for carry out and the food was again good. The man and woman at the front were very nice also. Only one thing as the orange chicken and general tsos chicken hard some chewy kind of hard pieces. I've found that kind of normal for these dishes. The food was good all in all. This is by far the best Chinese food in this area hands down. I'm from Hawaii, so imagine my frustration with all the bland/boring Chinese food around here prior to Hunan Cafe opening. And I've tried them all. I thought I was gonna be limited to eating Panda Express when I needed a fix :( Pretty much I have enjoyed every single dish I've ever ordered. I especially love the egg drop soup with crispy wonton strips, the combination fried rice and the cashew chicken. So tasty and flavorful. I usually order about twice/week after a long day at work.
