I've been here at least a dozen times and I would say it is sufficient to fix a sushi craving. The staff are pleasant but some have more difficulty speaking/understanding English than others. The All You Can Eat sushi is great if you want to really pig out and have multiple appetizers and multiple rolls. However you could get an appetizer, a roll, soup and salad for cheaper than the all-you-can-eat cost. So if you have a medium appetite, you'll probably lose money on the all you can eat menu. The sushi usually tastes fresh but I'm not a huge fan of the rolls. The Shrimp tempura and veggie tempura are amazing and the best thing on the menu. read more

The management at this establishment is horrible! The sushi didn't seem fresh so we barely ate the rolls that we ordered. Understood that there was a 15 percent surcharge for wasted food but the manager came over to our table and yelled at us for not eating the rolls. We ate everything else because it was fine! She also said she was going to charge us 30 percent instead and if we didn't pay it, she would call the cops. Have been looking for a good sushi buffet in Minneapolis. The Chinese buffets, in general, do a mediocre job of turning out mayo-filled rolls, but this place sticks to Japanese (and not just sushi) across the board for a great value lunch. Their nigiri selection is a bit small (I suspect it may be bigger for dinner), but their noodles and donburi are great and many are included in the all you can eat $15 lunch. Is it the best Japanese in town? No. But is it the best Japanese buffet with reasonably authentic food and sushi and a pleasant ambience at a good price? Absolutely. The nay-sayers here are basically complaining that it doesn't measure up to the pricey ala carte restaurants, but Kyoto doesn't seem to aspire to that. If you love Japanese (which I do... having lived there for three years) and you love value (which I do, given my hebraic origins) then you will find much to appreciate about this place. read more

I use to go here alot but after today, I WILL NOT COME HERE AGAIN. My sister is 9 but they charged her as an adult. I asked to waiter to get the manager to talk about this. When she walked over she had a negative attitude and was trying to say that she was 10 and that I was lying (My friend told them she was 10 but that was because she didn't know her age and just guessed). My little brother even asked the lady if my sister looked like an adult and she "yes she does", in a arrogant and condescending way. I repeatedly told her that she was 9 but she still did not believe me and she wanted to see my little sisters Identification. Obviously I didn't have identification for her since we were just going out to eat and not out of the country. But the worst part was when she started talking about her financial status and said to my little brother how is 15 "I make more money than you and if you can't afford to eat then you shouldn't have come here". Bragging about how much you make doesn't make you better than anyone.This lady claims she's the "owner" of this establishment and I am disappointed and offended with the things she has said to me and my little brother. She was very disrespectful to us and went out of line. The food is good, the waiters are great and I paid the adult price for my sister but I personally don't want to give my money to a restaurant that has an owner that treated me like I was low class. I was having a major sushi craving & have never visited Kyoto. I heard some good things about it but I listen to the reviews I read & didn't see much good out of it. I have some car issues at the moment so didn't want to drive all the way to Woodbury to Akita, my favorite sushi place. Anyways, so my niece & I decided to take our $6 off all-you-can-eat coupon to Kyoto & give it a go since it's close plus we had the coupon. Horrible service. The waitress passed us multiple times, even w/ my menu open ready to order (which btw, it looks exactly like Akita's menu, c'mon be original), she still passed us by. She'd hang around behind the sushi bar & point, yes point at me saying some bs in Chinese-talking about your diners & pointing? No. Scallops are actually sea tape, not real scallops. Service overall was horrible, I never even got a water refill. Oh, here's the kicker, she never took my $6 off my bill. Wasted $50 to be talked about in Chinese & given one free glass of water. read more

The hubs and I go here all the time for date night! We love the food and haven't found sushi in the area we'd rather go to. My only complaint is the hosting staff. Horrible service! I've arrived late for an birthday event and the waitress didn't offer me any drinks. I have to ask her if I can get a water. On top of that, I've waited a while waiting for her to take my order, eventually I have to ask her if I can order something. Then of course, my order was never brought out to me. Had the AYCE on a Saturday night. Service was good even when it got busy. Our party ordered California rolls, shrimp tempura rolls, beef sirloin,beef ramen, spring rolls, sexy girl, chicken teriyaki and red bean ice cream. We loved almost everything our least favorite was the chicken teriyaki. Favorites were shrimp tempura roll and beef sirloin is a must! We always go to Benihana but I think this is our new fav.. When this place first opened, it was great! But lately, it seems the quality of their sushi is not as great as it once was.... and it seems they've taken off items off from the lunch menu. For sure, they took off seaweed salad. You can order that now only during dinner hours. I do find it strange that they close during afternoon hours around 2:30-4:00 pm or is that with all sushi restaurants? Overall, all the times I've been there, the food has been okay but not excellent. The atmosphere is great, has tvs... noise level has never been extremely loud. Overall place has always looked clean. I love the food! However, the service isn't the best. I have been to the Maple Grove location many times and I have yet to have a server that was polite, kind, and attentive. Usually my servers make me feel like the fact that I am at the restaurant, I am an inconvenience. And at times my server has not come back to the table to take more orders for all you can eat sushi, I have had to ask the person that comes around and fills waters for food because my server is nowhere in sight. If you like good sushi and don't mind being neglected by your server, go here for sure. I would suggest ordering as much food as possible right away for all you can eat sushi. read more

We used to come here all the time it lately the ambiance has been awful. The music is simply too loud. We ask to have it turned down and then a few minutes later they turned it back up. YUM! I'm a sushi fan, and have eaten at several restaurants in the Twin Cities, Chicago, east coast (e.g., DC, Miami), west coast (e.g., San Francisco, LA, Seattle) as well as Hawaii (Oahu and Maui). The quality and price of Kyoto sushi is exceptional - and extremely difficult to beat. While other sushi restaurants tend to be rice-heavy (Aji, Fuji-Ya, Origami), Kyoto has a great balance between rice and fish. The #9 is excellent. Fish is very fresh and service wonderful. read more

This was actually my first time trying either Japanese food or sushi. This place made me a fan. I really enjoyed the food and flavors. They also had an excellent, light, cheap Japanese beer. I went with the "all you can eat" menu option (for around $35 IIRC) so that I could try different things since it was all new to me. I ended up sampling tempura, ramen, sushi, and green tea ice cream. My only complaint was that I could have eaten more but didn't get the chance because the service was pretty slow-paced and the portions are small. So if you're paying for the all-you-can-eat option they'll bring you out one small dish at a time (like a few fried shrimp) and then check back when it's long gone. I don't know if this is calculated to save on cost or if they just happened to be too busy for quick service that night. Regardless I ended up eating a handful of small plates before the check came and then at that point I felt awkward continuing to ask and wait for more. I did manage to get a scoop of green tea ice cream before leaving, which is incredibly good. I would definitely go again for the food and I just hope next time I'll be able to get better value. read more

This is the best sushi restaurant in the Twin Cities, maybe in Minnesota. For just 25 dollars you can eat as much sushi as you want. This might be a bad thing at some all you can eat sushi restaurants. Many all you can eat sushi restaurants will have a poor selection on the menu, bad quality fish, or pack the rice onto the fish and the rolls so you get full more quickly. Kyoto is not guilty of any of these sins. Their fish is so fresh, and it melts like butter in your mouth. The selection is generous, with plenty of rolls and fish types to choose from - they even have sashimi included on the all you can eat menu! They also have regular asian dishes on the menu if sushi is not your scene. The ratio of rice to fish is just right, and the rice is deliciously seasoned, not too sweet or too bland. The salmon was so fresh it smelled faintly of cantaloupe. The yellowtail, tuna, and avocado was also fantastic! Our server was friendly and service was prompt. The restaurant is clean and beautifully decorated. I wish I still lived in the area, but I know every time I return to Maple Grove, I will be back to pig out at Kyoto! read more

Food and the servers are ok, but their manager was nasty and rude. Their coupon didn't specify limitation of one per table or party, it only states $5 off for dinner of two. When we told the manager that their coupon didn't list any limitation, she was upset and said that there's a note posted on the entry door and by their cashier that limit only one coupon per table. She yelled at us like we tried to give them trouble. We were so embarrassing. Instead of explaining to the customers that their coupon was misprinted (without the limitation fine print), she blamed the customers not reading their signs in the store. The restaurant can't cheat their customers by lured them to the restaurant with a coupon, then make the change and expect all customers must read all the signs they have in the store before seated. They should pull off the coupon if they're not intend to cheat the customers. read more
