I've been looking for a place (that's ACTUALLY adhering to the CDC and NYC's safety measures) to do my pedicure for a minute and lo anddddd behold, About Your Skin was 10 minutes away. The spot is in the cut so if you're not actively looking you'll completely miss it. One of my girlfriends, Brittani, is a new nail tech here so that's how I was made aware of it. Once she confirmed that they're safe and accepting appointments it was a no brainer. I heard Brittani mention how lavish and luxurious the salon is and my sis wasn't lying. The decor is beautiful, the staff is friendly, the ambiance is just IT and the cherry on top for me....THEY'RE BLACKED OWNED! LET'S GO! Upon entry my temperature was take and I was asked to wash my hands in the bathroom. Love to see it. I then sat on their beautiful baby blue couch while my tech prepared my station. During the small wait the staff checked on me to see if I needed or wanted anything & allowed me to select my color. I noticed that each station has a clear plexiglass that separates the tech from the customer. Again, we love to see it. Once my station was ready the gel pedicure began. Courtney was my sis and she was just derailed, thorough, efficient and on point. Everything I need honestly. And it's like a full blown pedicure. The cuticles, the cutting, the massage, every single step was perfect. An employee walked around to check on everyone and offered water. I humbly accepted. Then the owner walked around and offered wine. YES MISS MAMAS! I will loudly accept! She poured all of us a plastic cup of red wine with the cutestttttt About Your Skin coasters. You would walk right past this place if you weren't paying attention- it's in the basement but is very nice and I love the furniture. My best friend and I made an appointment for 7:30 for 2 gel manicures. We arrive at 7:30 and were told we would be seen soon. We were not seen until 8:30 - If my friend didn't want to do this so bad I would have gone home. Also, they only take cash so I had to walk back to the bank to take out cash. The woman who took care of me was very nice and professional but did not cut my cuticles very well. The gel was $25 which I thought was a decent deal. I have been to About Your Skin on several occasions for Brazilian wax. The entrance is clean, I had to go through covid 19 procedures just like when I go to a medical facility except I was able to wash my hands (which is better than sanitizer). The general area was clean and nicely put together, bright and comfortable looking. When you get your nails done its comfortable seating and the look is very IG and social media friendly. Ms. Jackie was a consummate professional, the wax was quick and not painful like I expected. It was my first time and I had a lot of hair-all of the hair-but it went well. I was guided and I felt comfortable and safe. That's central for me. Quite honestly, that's how you need to feel when you have your most private of parts -all out. You don't want to feel like anyone is judging you or going to talk bout the fact that you pulled with a forest between your legs, when you leave . I was also educated on exfoliation for skin care and ingrown avoidance. ALL of my friends who get waxed have never told me about this part. It's important to be educated about your skin to maintain and retain the benefit of your service. I feel like the price was reasonable for the quick, clean and safe service with minimal pain-less than the chain that recently opened in the neighborhood and much cleaner than anything I have seen available in a while. We went there for my mother in laws birthday. It's a cute spot with nice tufted faux leather princess style furniture. We had pedicures and I paid extra for foot massage and a birthday celebration that the owner was nice enough to accommodate. Reservations are a must and the place was clean and COVID-19 prepped. I had a wonderful experience here today! First visit and first mani/pedi during the pandemic. Felt very safe, temperature taken at the door and I was asked to wash my hands upon arrival. The foot tubs are lined with disposable plastic liners, chairs are spaced out, and there are plastic shields separating clients from technicians. I relaxed with a glass of wine while Misha gave me a great (and much needed!) thorough pedicure. Ms. Jackie offered great advice and helped me choose some fun colors. I'd been to this salon maybe twice or three times before and they really did put forth some effort at those times.. They are a new shop, I understand there's a lot on the managers mind so I let those small discrepancies go. I really did like Jackie but I think she needs a little more managerial and customer service skill as well. She was very accommodating until I became an almost-regular. I also really did like my pedicurist but she became very arrogant and rude after she started doing manicures. NOW ABOUT THESE NAILS... Gel manicure was good in the past with a different nail tech. Stephanie was good with pedicures and they moved her to doing finger nails. On this day I walked in at 4pm. They were booked and told me to come back at 7:15. I came back at 7. Didn't get serviced until about 7:30, 7:45, fine. Jackie did go ahead and prep me, which was good- she removed the previous gel polish. The first mistake on both our parts was them booking me that late and me even taking an appointment that late because Stephanie, my nail tech was exhausted. I showed them the photo I wanted to achieve which is the "before" photo I attached. They said it wouldn't look exactly the same but they would try. Second mistake, on both our parts - the nail tech confidently accepting the challenge and me letting her. I'm not sure why they think I wanted the design on my own nails because I never said I did. I wanted what was on the photo and the photo clearly showcases ACRYLIC TIPS. So I sit back, relax and let Stephanie do her thing because she's the nail tech and I assume she's got this. Jackie told her to test it on one nail. There was a miscommunication here because By the time she did that one nail, i realized she prepped the rest of my fingernails without tips. This is when I told Stephanie that I wanted tips not on my nails. She replies, why didn't you say that, I already prepped the other nails. Mind you it's like 8:30pm now, she looks like she wants to go home and I feel bad for her so I'm like, it's fine just even them out and add tips to the two short nails I have then. Jackie only remembers that part but in the wrong order. She thinks I asked for two tips upon entry but I asked for two tips after settling for it after my tech passed the prep phase. So she does the two tips but the nails are still bumpy, unevenly matched by the cut and they just look bad. And I felt bad because it was just a mess at this point. Also I hadn't realized that the method she chose would cost much more, plus the two tips, plus they charge about another $10 to (attempt to) shape your nails in a coffin shape. And my nails just look like I been eating curry chicken or Cheetos, it just didn't work. I paid $55 for this. I came back a day later because it wasn't sitting well with me that I didn't even love this thing I paid for. I was really nice about it, and came to ask Jackie if this could be done over with tips (like i wanted to begin with)and she told me to go ask Stephanie for what I want. That was a bad managerial move, Jackie. I came to talk to you, you put us in an awkward position because the nail tech was right there. She got red in the face and put her head down and tried not to answer when Jackie asked her when she would be free next to take me. At this point I had settled AGAIN asking for them to simply put tips with no color, just keep it plain if that's all she knows to do. The next morning Jackie calls to tell me that Stephanie doesn't want to do it so we are going to have to CANCEL my appointment and that hopefully I can find somewhere else that can achieve that look. That was it. No incentive. Another bad managerial move, Jackie. Give your unsatisfied customer an incentive so you can keep them because I was nice about it, I was patient and I DID bring up my discomfort. I understand that you're a manager and owner and you have a lot on your mind but you are also a tad forgetful. Jackie proceeded to go back and forth with me about how I didn't ask for tips. I said the photo clearly shows tips, I never said put it on my natural nails. I asked her for a PARTIAL REFUND. There's me being nice again because I know this was badly communicated because of the pity I had for the nail tech being tired but also they did a shit job on the shape alone, charged me for every damn step without communicating to me how much more everything would be and then canceling on me last minute because the nail tech didn't feel like it. She also refused to give me a refund and you know what, it's fine. I still wish this shop growth and maturity and better nail techs because I want to see a sister win but you have got to do better. read more

Visited this place today with my 4 year old mini me. One word Amazing! I am soooo beyond excited to have them in the neighborhood. The menu is extensive and prices are decent. The decor is beautiful and unlike most nail salons it's quiet and no strong odor. My daughter got a manicure and Lexy was so patient and good with her helping her to pick out her colors and every step along the way making her feel like a princess. I got a aqua-hydra dermabrasion facial and the entire process was awesome. They literally offer almost every beauty service except hair so you never have to go anywhere else. This spot is a hidden gem in the West Harlem neighborhood. Called ahead to make a mani/pedi appt on a Sunday night and they were able to fit me in and graciously. I saw Stephanie and she was excellent - very thorough and kind. Jackie the owner was also very pleasant. Loved the included paraffin wax treatment at the end of my mani - it was a delightful surprise! The ambiance is lovely, though I wish the pedicure chairs were massage chairs. Honestly one of the best mani/pedi's I've ever had. The service here is phenomenal. From the moment you come in, the manager Cassey is so warm and welcoming. She helped me get settled in and even helped me pick my colors. Stephanie was my tech and she really did such a good job. Her manicure was very healthy and she took her time with the details. HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE AND TREATMENT FROM THE OWNER HERSELF. I was in the area and I decided to give this place a try despite being skeptical based on horrible reviews with proof of their mediocre job with acrylics. I opted for a regular gel manicure and add on of $6 to repair two of my broken nails. Simple task right? WRONG! I'd give this place no stars if it wasn't for the nail tech, Jennifer who was so nice during my visit. P.s she was not the one who did the nail fix it was someone else. (This should've been a red flag to me but again I wanted to give this place the benefit of the doubt.) I came in on Wednesday and just TWO days after, Friday night, One of my nails that I PAYED THE UP CHARGE FOR BROKE. Now, I have gotten nail fixes before and can say that my nails have NEVER lifted or broke after getting them repaired not even after the 2 WEEKS HAVE BEEN UP so imagine my disappointment when this happened, not a week- not even 4 days- but 2 DAYS after my initial visit. I was more annoyed at the fact I would have to travel so far to get ONE nail repaired after just two days. I called in today, Saturday morning to explain the situation and the "manager" if she can even call herself that, replied with "well what do you want me to do? There's nothing I can do if you walked out with a fixed nail and it broke because I don't know what your daily activities are" I said "you're telling me it's okay that I payed for two of my nails to be fixed and one already broke" she said "we're not going to fix it for free". After expressing my frustrations she showed no empathy and simply brushed me off. Now you tell me Jackie, why would I come to get my nail RE FIXED after just 2 DAYS and after hearing how condescending you are basically blaming ME for YOUR poor services. Horrible place!! I had a facial appointment at 5 pm today, so I came and was waiting long, then I asked how long should I wait, then the lady told me that I have to come at 5:30 instead. I got a shellac pedicure from there and within a couple of days the polish from two of my nails completely fell off. They didn't chip or anything but simply fell off. I called a week later because I had been busy and the owner said that she didn't know how I'd been treating my nails and it had been too long so she couldn't be responsible. I just wanted those two nails repainted and nothing else but she made it seem that it was my fault that happened (she said the heat outside probably made them do that). She also said that I would already be due for another pedicure at this time... my previous shellac pedicures have lasted 4-6 weeks at least. I'm disappointed in this shop and will not be returning. As nice as the place is and as kind as the ladies were, we are paying for a service and i was very disappointed with my outcome. I found this place on yelp and went in for a regular pedi and acrylics. Pedi was fine, very standard, however when it got to the acrylics, everything went downhill from there. The tech was very nice and seemed to know what she was doing in the beginning. I asked for coffin nails, medium length and ombre - neutral base with a reddish/orange tip. She showed me a picture of her work and i was excited as that was exactly what i wanted. Sadly, that's not what i got. The service took over 2 hrs, the acrylic was thick and bumpy and the color and style looked absolutely NOTHING like the picture she showed me. I bought a Groupon for a bikini wax. The bad experience started even with the phone call. The woman on the other end was rude and short with me (who I also believe to be the owner and the waxer). I get to the salon, and it is steaming hot and poorly decorated. The waxing room itself was VERY unclean. My waxer would blow on the wax with her mouth. Every time. That can't be right. That's unsanitary. She said the bikini wax only included the outside parts. Fine; I figured as much. I asked if I could pay extra to get more done. She became slightly upset at this and exclaimed "you'd have to buy the Brazilian next time. You got the Groupon for the bikini. I don't make a lot of money off this deal!" If you don't make enough money on these deals, why do them and turn off potential consumers?! As we were finishing she asked to see my voucher. And she meant right then and there. So there I am standing half-naked with a crotch covered in baby powder and leftover wax while this upset woman waits for me to pull out my phone. Unbelievable.
