This is a great place for sushi. In case you're looking at the photo of the outside, the restaurant has moved to the other end of the same plaza. The place was clean and staff were warm and welcoming. I ordered miso soup, kani and a Godzilla Roll. I knew what I wanted when I got there so I placed my order right away. The soup and kani were out quick and the roll took just a moment to cook and it soon followed. Service was quick and professional, stopping at the right moments. My only negative point was the plate for the roll. t's a unique ceramic plate with a giant shark head and tail sticking out. It just made it awkward to pick up my food. I'm not feeling the love for the local favorite Akanomi. It's fine. The missus and I went for a rare date night and got a cozy corner table. We had no reservations, and were lucky to find a spot was available, although we were prepared to sit at the sushi bar if needed. Akanomi's four seat sushi bar, really feels more like three seats, because one is adjacent to where a stream of people pick up and pay for their takeout orders. It wouldn't be terribly pleasant to sit there and try to enjoy a peaceful sushi dinner. One of the things I love about Japanese food is the clear soup, so I started with that. What really thrills me about this soup is how so much flavor can be packed into something clear. But this one cloudy and also oily. For our sushi we went with a combination of nigiri and maki, looking for simpler offerings that let the ingredients shine. We weren't looking for fancy rolls, and were advised that the spicy tuna crunch roll was something people really loved. But we didn't want anything to obscure the tuna, or add fried bits to an otherwise healthful meal, so we took a pass. The cuts on the nigiri were generous, but the fish was oddly soft and almost mushy on both our snapper and tuna. The yellowtail had a bit more texture to it, which made it the best of the bunch. Our white tuna nigiri was generously filled, but wasn't sealed very well, and was served falling apart. The eel and avocado roll may have been the best thing on the plate. Salmon skin and cucumber was also tasty, but I wasn't expecting it to be slathered with unagi sauce. On the plus side, service was friendly. I loved how the tea service came with a heavy cast iron tea pot. The green tea with toasted rice was lovely. Less lovely was the smell of cleaning agents that wafted by our table every time someone opened the door to the bathroom. Maybe we ordered wrong. It's fine. But this was not the secret superior sushi spot I was hoping to find. read more

I was very pleased with my lunch in this tiny restaurant (only four seats at the sushi bar and seven 4-seat tables) located in a small strip mall about a 20 minute drive outside of the city center. The server and chefs were attentive, friendly and polite, despite the close quarters both in front and back of house. The sushi bar itself was a bit congested, with a bunch of small advertising stands cluttering the space, each extolling one or more types of beer or sake. But that was the only advertising, as there was thankfully no obnoxious TV, which is all to common in other local restaurants. The food itself was very good. As usual, I ordered a couple of maki and a handful of nigiri. The presentation had very little ornamentation - just fresh ingredients, quickly and elegantly prepared. For some strange reason, I have found very few local restaurants with fluke or flounder either on the menu, or available when I order. Of course, I am always glad to order. Love. Great value, great presentation, and great service. What else can you ask for? I ordered the Pink Panther, Spider Roll, and the regular Sashimi plate. Both rolls were quite tasty and was fresh. At some places, the soft-shelled crab in the spider roll is soggy but at Akanomi it tasted like it was just deep fried. I was equally impressed when the tea was brought out in a iron kettle with iron cups, which keeps the tea so incredibly hot that it's almost impossible to even hold. The only small complaint I had was the sashimi plate had smoked eel which officially isn't sashimi. On the night we came, they were getting their DSL line fixed so couldn't run my credit card until the technician finished so we had to sit tight. In the meantime, they brought us out green tea ice cream mochi on the house. The excellent service we rec'vd coupled with the delicious sushi Akanomi delivered is gonna seal the deal for me to come pay them a re-visit on my next trip to upstate NY. read more

Visiting from out of town (Long Island NY) This was the only sushi place we could find that had dine in service. Big sign in front saying No mask, no Sushi! (Sorry Karen!) Felt safe and comfortable. Staff all wearing masks. Sushi chefs wearing gloves. We had a few interesting things that we don't typically see at home. This is a cozy little sushi place in a small plaza in Guilderland. We mostly stop here for sushi, but they have lots of other wonderful food. The atmosphere is nice and small, with tables along a wall and chefs behind a counter. We often get takeout, and the service is great. My kids can be picky about their vegetarian sushi, and we have no problems ordering just what we want - even "sushi" consisting of rice wrapped in seaweed. They always ask if I want the seaweed on the inside or out, or if I want sesame seeds on it, which I really appreciate when I have young kids. It's nice to have a little hometown sushi place that has reliable sushi. We have been going here since they opened and will continue to return. read more

This is my first time here, but my mother in law has been many times and swears it's the best in Albany. I agree! The service was quick and the staff is very polite. We started with miso soup and a house salad, and both were better than the normal fare. The rolls are well balanced and very flavorful. The rice is the best I've had in years. This place is the tops in the Capital District. Sushi made the traditional way, not American Chinese goop. Try their kitchen, for cooked dinners. Japanese food doesn't have to be raw fish, leave that for me! They make the best ikura sushi wrapped in salmon! Spectacular! such a quaint cozy little place---and the sushi is awesome! I'm a vegetarian so I can't speak to the fish, but the veggie sushi I had was great! The waitress made sure to ask me if i was vegetarian and left the fish sauce off the sweet potato tempura roll when i said yes, which i really appreciated. My boyfriend ordered a nigiri sushi platter and loved it, so i feel confident in recommending the fish sushi too! Since there's only about 6 tables in the place we had to wait a few minutes, which we were completely fine with, but nonetheless the waitress brought us out some delicious red bean ice cream for dessert on the house for our inconvenience. Speaking of, the staff is so incredibly nice and everyone from the waitress to the sushi chef is willing to answer any questions you may have and offer suggestions if you can't decide. Akanomi is definitely worth a try, and i bet you will go back once you experience it! read more
