Had limited options of good dine-in restaurants on New Year Day, and luckily Yuan Sushi was still open. My favorite restaurant is a Japanese restaurant in another city, so I had high expectations, and Yuan Sushi did not disappoint! The dinner bento boxes were both very filling, including a main dish (we chose tonkatsu for one and salmon teriyaki for the other, some vegetables, rice, 2 steamed pork dumplings and a California roll. Together, our total was under $30 (not including tip)!! Everything tasted really fresh and I will definitely be back to try some of their sushi rolls. read more

Other reviews will have insisted: the best sushi in Cohoes! Technically correct (the best kind of correct), because as of December 2018, this is the only one. With four dozen stock photos of individual Asian dishes on the exterior plate glass windows of this restaurant (no one can see inside), everyone can see that they sell foreign food - for reasonable Cohoes prices! But I would think that a restaurant with the word "sushi" in the name would emphasize that experience - unfortunately, this was not the case during my visit, with the original failure apparently being one of design. I'm not sure who or what was the first occupant of this street front building, but the renovation to this restaurant placed the 8-seat sushi bar into a corner nook, with only 3 of the seats usable. Interaction with the staff was less than stellar. In an empty lunchtime restaurant, two different servers, hopefully thinking themselves keen, must have questioned me eight times before I set down my menu to order. They must have presumed that my lack of interest in the free generic crispy fried noodles and "duck" sauce was a clue that I needed more attention. There is a line between attentive and annoying. The chef who prepared my plate only spoke five words to me, but was able to maintain a lively twenty-minute conversation with two other non-kitchen members of staff who both squeezed behind the bar about three feet from me. Usually I despise the presence of an obnoxious blaring television at any sushi bar, but today I would have liked one to drown out their conversation. Of course, the ambiance and the service are important, but not so much as the food. As usual, I only ordered a few simple items, following the basic logic of walk-then-run. After the previously mentioned plate of crispy noodles was pushed away, an unremarkable bowl of soup followed before the main. The plating could have been much better. With no rush and no other patrons this was a perfect opportunity to display exacting talent. That did not happen (photo). A less-than-artistic blob of sauce on the bland spicy salmon roll was not appealing to the eye or tongue. The tamago did not taste as if it was cooked today. Eggs are cheap; that should not be a problem. Finally, the hokkigai was not bad, but was not stored in the sushi display cooler with the rest of the ingredients - the chef had to run back into the kitchen. The "it's normally stored in the back, out of view," always causes me to develop concern. I decided not to attempt the fried banana tempura roll or some of the other offerings not usually available at sushi restaurants. The good news is: Cohoes prices. The bad news: Cohoes quality. Ah, so I didn't have the sushi but I did sample the udon and a little bit of the tempura and gyoza and they were perfectly fine. Portions were enormous. The service was prompt and as we were the only ones in the kitchen, we got orders up fast as well. It's a little dim and downscale for ambiance but a nice little oasis in downtown. I expect this is the kind of place that could become a hangout if I had more occasion to come this way. read more

Really great dining option in Cohoes...finally! I've ordered from here a few times now (they are conveniently on GrubHub), and was not disappointed. I can safely say we will no longer be ordering food from other sketchy Chinese food takeout restaurants in the area. Their menu is HUGE, and although they are advertised as a sushi restaurant, they have some other Asian specialties as well (sesame chicken, fried rice, hibachi entrees, etc.). Some of the items we have sampled have been their pork gyoza, general tsao's chicken, sesame chicken, beef and broccoli, chicken lo mein, and some tempura sushi rolls. All have been excellent quality and extremely tasty. Even the presentation and packaging is thoughtful, which is a big plus in my opinion. Prices and delivery times are reasonable considering the quality of food you are getting. Ordered takeout lunch from here today. I got the Fried Banana Roll & the Sweet Potato Tempura Roll. They were good, average I'd say. However I will say, as a vegetarian who loves pseudo-sushi, I have never seen a banana roll on a menu before and for that reason I will order from here again. This order included 5 other people and because we spent a certain amount of money we were given a General Tso's Chicken meal for free! I had a great experience here! I showed up around 30 minutes before closing and they still served me. They accidentally put eel sauce on a meal and then said that it was their fault since I said that I was a vegetarian, even though I hadn't asked for no eel sauce. They made me a new plate. They substituted a sushi roll for me, even though the one I wanted was $1 more than the one that came in the meal, and didn't even charge me any extra. I also ordered tea and was surprised not to see it on my bill. I guess they don't charge for tea? I mentioned it and they said it was free of charge. It was super delicious tea; I asked and the waiter said that his grandmother brought it from China where his family grows tea. The staff was very friendly and I would definitely recommend this place. I was staying in Cohoes for just a week and, as a vegan, needed a place I could rely upon for quality food. Thank goodness for Yuan Sushi! The first time I visited I got the Veggie Maki combo with Miso Soup. It was a situation where I was ordering takeout with a group and when orders get messed up it is usually the vegan in the group that suffers. Not to worry - everything was exactly as ordered, fresh, delicious, timely and a nice touch of wrapping the eating utensils in a folded menu for cleanliness and portability. The staff was friendly and on my next visit very accommodating. I came at lunch and wanted the Vegetable Hibachi lunch special but it had California Roll (not vegan). They didn't flinch nor bat an eye when I asked if they might sub a veggie maki for it. I was so happy! Again, my lunch was tasty, fresh and took no time at all to be served. I sat at a table and chairs but saw another diner enjoying his lunch at the sushi bar. Some other customers were waiting for takeout and I heard they were offered a beverage while they waited. Yuan Sushi is a welcome addition to downtown Cohoes. For a vegan visitor like myself, it was an oasis that I could count on during my stay. read more

Yaun Sushi is one of the best chinese food places i've had in a very long time. I ordered the General Tsau's Chicken, as expected it wasn't too shabby, the best thing is it retained the fresh delicous texture you have when it's while it was cold. I did have the Salmon it was quite good considering I never really eat fish that much. The place was almost spotless, tables and chairs looked like brand new. The staff were beyond friendly, they helped explain what everything was down to the last detail. Overall I recommend this place to people who like cheap, delicous and lots of food! read more

This was by far the worst experience I have had with sushi or any take out restaurant. I had ordered hibachi vegetables and hibachi chicken. Our food came and hour and a half late, and the hibachi vegetable was just a container of steamed veggies with no sauces. The chicken was dry plain with no sauces. When I spoke on the phone the hostess was very rude, incredibly insensitive to the costumer, and the least helpful person I had ever spoke with. I would not serve the squirrels this food. I agree with all of the other positive reviews. I have visited this place 6 times in the past few months. Sushi rolls are great, and the traditional Chinese dishes have also been uniformly good. On one visit I ordered what I thought was a single appetizer order of hot and sour soup. The very friendly waitress brought out a serving bowl with at least four portions of soup, and it was excellent! I highly recommend this restaurant, and hope they continue to prosper on Remsen Street. read more

In Cohoes? Who knew? Stopped in to check it out and was surprised to find it was as good as the pictures show. We had tri-roll as app then chicken tempura and ton-katsu. Everything excellent.
