A mix of good and bad. The Nishiki roll is easily one of the best sushi rolls I've had in the US, the flamingo roll was incredibly bland. The gyoza and seaweed salad were also very good. But I received the gyoza after I had received the check and the restaurant was not Very busy. read more

My family and I have been enjoying Nishiki Sushi for years. At least once every week or two. The food is always so fresh and delicious. I highly recommend the tuna capaccio and the ninja roll. Visiting from out of town and found this place on Yelp due to good reviews. The service was good and quick. Ambiance was decent. My stomach wasn't feeling the best so I started with a miso soup, which was just ok. I ordered 2 California rolls and a mango roll with brown rice. I know, basic, but that's what I was craving. THE. ROLLS. WERE. SO. FRESH! Sushi in general is usually pretty fresh but the flavors and crunch were phenomenal. The ginger really helped to settle my stomach. The next night I was craving sushi again due to how good this was, but I was back home 2 hours away. I got the same sushi locally and it was nowhere near as good. My dinner date agreed, her's were also so good and fresh and she also kept craving it the next day! Of note, we got there right before closing. Highly recommended. read more

This place does not have good sushi. We had the spicy scallop roll (more like spicy panko roll, legit don't think there was any scallop in it), tuna avocado roll (there wasn't much tuna, nearly all avocado), eel cucumber roll (eel was fishy in a bad way and super chewy and slimy), Rensselaer (just no), and the hurricane roll (the only ok roll b/c it was deep fried, a cooked roll should not be the best roll at a sushi place period). Other than that, the waitresses were nice and the inside was clean, the food just wasn't good. read more

Nishiki Sushi is located in a strip mall, a few miles from the main city center, in a township more comfortable with diners and chain restaurants than the authentic or exotic. The ambiance was simple and straightforward, with disposable chopsticks, paper napkins and a reasonably-priced menu with quite a few pictures. Despite my concerns, I followed the Yelp reviews, sat at the sushi bar and ordered a simple lunch - a couple of rolls and a few items off of the à la carte menu. Spicy salmon roll, eel-cucumber roll; sushi: egg, red snapper, smoked salmon and eel - the presentation was pleasant enough, following an unremarkable miso and salad. Unfortunately, I visited on the day that the chef must have forgotten to season the rice with vinegar, salt and sugar (sushi-meshi) that is required for every piece I was served. Flavorless rice is not a good starting point. Going downhill from there, the spicy salmon roll was apparently a crispy spicy salmon roll. Surprisingly, the tempura-style crispy batter mixed into the roll overpowered both the spicy and the salmon flavors leaving bland filling surrounded by bland rice. Also, the grilled egg (tamagoyaki) was, upon closer inspection, not rolled. It appeared to be scrambled eggs shaped into a square, sealed in plastic and cooked in a immersion slow cooker (sous vide) - not grilled at all. Hopefully this was done on site. The service was prompt and attentive, which did improve the experience, but the bottom line is always the food - and all I ordered was a few simple items. The food is not particularly bad, but it could be so much better. Luckily for them, there is little nearby competition to force improvement quickly. read more

Pretty decent choice for a place here outside of Albany! Miso soup - not the best I've had, fairly average. My friend and I share 3 rolls. The Pink lady was hands down the best!! Definitely get it if you're a sushi eater. The red lobster roll & the sexy beach roll were both pretty equal on goodness. And yes, both good, but like I said, pink lady outshined then both easily. Our friend ordered the shrimp and chicken hibachi and seemed pretty happy with his choice. It wasn't busy on a Saturday night around 7:30pm. But again, it's an odd location. First off, this is a vegetarian review. I am a vegetarian food lover and I frequent this place a lot. The food is delicious and the staff is very cordial. This is the sort of restaurant that warms my soul. It is authentic, house-made with care, and served graciously with attention. Not what one would expect in a Rensselaer strip mall, but I was nearby in the late afternoon and went in for a late lunch/early dinner, in large part encouraged by fellow yelpers. The interior is pleasant enough and very clean. It seems the hostess/waitress is an owner and was very gracious. I had miso soup, gyoza and sushi. The miso soup and gyozo were excellent, flavorful and served hot. The sushi was so-so. Not bad, not great, somewhat poorly cut and not the best quality. I didn't get sick (I was wondering as I both ordered and ate since I was, after all, at a Rensselaer strip mall on a Monday). I will happily return when in the area. I think it's unfortunate that much of their business is take-out. It diminishes the respect and quality for the preparation. Would you order high-quality French to go (if they would let you!) and eat 1/2 hour later? It would not do the food justice. Same here, I believe. I encourage people to go and sit there to eat. Today was my first time ordering from here. I did not eat-in, and the preparation time was only 15 minutes. I ordered the Christmas roll which is a spicy tuna roll with tuna and avocado on top, a regular spicy tuna roll, and a sweet potato roll. The Christmas roll was very good as well as the spicy tuna roll but the sweet potato roll tasted a bit bland. I like going here to have dinner. First off the hot towels they give you to clean your hands remind of of the first class or business class on an airplane. I love the fact that the hostess and our server all know us and when my wife ordered the wrong thing she was corrected.... the waitress said don't you mean chicken tempura (for the kids)... that was a nice save/catch on her part. I like that I've been here 3 times over a year, since I don't live here, and I'm already a "regular." Service is friendly and efficient, fish is fresh and well prepared. I am not a huge fan of wacko rolls, so I stick to the classics, and they do those well. One of my measures of success is the size of the Gunkan-maki, which is the little nori boat that ikura and uni are served in. Sometimes, it's too big to eat! These are just the right size for me. Our group of 13 people descended on this place early and took up the entire back. While we certainly didn't make it easy on them that night, the waitress was a pro and was willing to put orders on separate checks. She was the only waitress working the entire space, which is pretty small, and we were sure to leave a good tip for all the excellent work she did. The food was delicious. The sushi menu is wide-ranging with very extensive descriptions of each roll. A range of bento boxes, appetizers, and noodle dishes are also available and looked great. Three rolls was plenty of food for 2 people. The drink menu was also very fun, with several hot and cold sake options, as well as sake mixes drinks. I wanted to update my recommendation and make some suggestions. -Be open minded, try everything. -Drink Saki, then drink some more Saki - ask for recommendations from the staff when ordering. - learn the difference between sushi, sashimi, Nigiri - learn to use chopsticks -go with a pro I mentioned that I would be a regular, well I am now part of the chop stick club, like a mug club in bars. A Regular indeed. The dumplings, the back pepper tuna and oysters are a great starter. Try a roll, get the the roll of the day, or just say "surprise me". You will love what will show up on your plate. For me it's a home away from home. Friendly and attentive staff that loves to engage in conversation. My husband and I like to tour the Cap. Region's sushi places when we're out and about. Last night we picked Nishiki and it didn't disappoint. Your usualy small quiet sushi restaurant (on a Sunday night). I had my standard three roll order (cucumber, Alaska, and Spicy Kani) and my husband had his standard "pick a couple of rolls I've never tried and go to town" plus his favorite eel avocado. He had the Nishiki roll and thoroughly enjoyed it, as well as the spicy crunchy scallop and really enjoyed both. My rolls were nothing fancy, but hit the spot and tasted great. Service was quick and the prices were good. If/when we find ourselves in Rensselaer again (which we will if we move out there), I will definitely be going back to Nishiki. read more

Time has improved a very good sushi bar/restaurant. The teriyaki beef was excellent. Sushi is generous quantity and amounts of fish in and on rice. FINALLY! A decent sushi restaurant in Rensselaer County! It brings tears to my eyes! The wasteland that is East Greenbush dining (sorry, Chez Mikes; you guys are great too) finally gets a sushi oasis. I'm a happy man! This place is very good. The Sushi Bento box is chock full, and hearty. The special rolls are interesting. The decor and service are excellent. And my wife, who does not eat sushi, can find various vegetarian "sushi" rolls on the menu that make her happy. So I'm happy.
