My family and I have been enjoying Nishiki Sushi for years. At least once every week or two. The food is always so fresh and delicious. I highly recommend the tuna capaccio and the ninja roll. And the Rensselaer Roll. And the gyoza. And the Tom Yum soup. So many favorites! The restaurant is owned by the kindest people, a local family who live right here. If you enjoy sushi, hibachi, ramen, or poke... you really must you dine here, like immediately. Eat now, enjoy, and thank me later!

The food was bland. The only thing I enjoyed was the raw salmon. I ordered take out instead of dine in. Maybe it would be better if I dined in?

Got a nice variety of sushi which they serve on a cute boat platter. Delicious and fresh fish!

Visited Nishiki for the second time yesterday, and it was as delicious as the first. Got a variety of fish including spider crab, salmon roe, spicy salmon, Godzilla roll and Nishiki roll. Nice fresh fish, delicious hot sake, and very pleasant friendly staff. We would definitely return.

Nishiki Sushi is located in a strip mall, a few miles from the main city center, in a township more comfortable with diners and chain restaurants than the authentic or exotic. The ambiance was simple and straightforward, with disposable chopsticks, paper napkins and a reasonably-priced menu with quite a few pictures. Despite my concerns, I followed the Yelp reviews, sat at the sushi bar and ordered a simple lunch - a couple of rolls and a few items off of the à la carte menu. Spicy salmon roll, eel-cucumber roll; sushi: egg, red snapper, smoked salmon and eel - the presentation was pleasant enough, following an unremarkable miso and salad. Unfortunately, I visited on the day that the chef must have forgotten to season the rice with vinegar, salt and sugar (sushi-meshi) that is required for every piece I was served. Flavorless rice is not a good starting point. Going downhill from there, the spicy salmon roll was apparently a crispy spicy salmon roll. Surprisingly, the tempura-style crispy batter mixed into the roll overpowered both the spicy and the salmon flavors leaving bland filling surrounded by bland rice. Also, the grilled egg (tamagoyaki) was, upon closer inspection, not rolled. It appeared to be scrambled eggs shaped into a square, sealed in plastic and cooked in a immersion slow cooker (sous vide) - not grilled at all. Hopefully this was done on site. The service was prompt and attentive, which did improve the experience, but the bottom line is always the food - and all I ordered was a few simple items. The food is not particularly bad, but it could be so much better. Luckily for them, there is little nearby competition to force improvement quickly.

This is the sort of restaurant that warms my soul. It is authentic, house-made with care, and served graciously with attention. Not what one would expect in a Rensselaer strip mall, but I was nearby in the late afternoon and went in for a late lunch/early dinner, in large part encouraged by fellow yelpers. The interior is pleasant enough and very clean. It seems the hostess/waitress is an owner and was very gracious. I had miso soup, gyoza and sushi. The miso soup and gyozo were excellent, flavorful and served hot. The sushi was so-so. Not bad, not great, somewhat poorly cut and not the best quality. I didn't get sick (I was wondering as I both ordered and ate since I was, after all, at a Rensselaer strip mall on a Monday). I will happily return when in the area. I think it's unfortunate that much of their business is take-out. It diminishes the respect and quality for the preparation. Would you order high-quality French to go (if they would let you!) and eat 1/2 hour later? It would not do the food justice. Same here, I believe. I encourage people to go and sit there to eat. I will again. Maybe I'll see you there!

Today was my first time ordering from here. I did not eat-in, and the preparation time was only 15 minutes. I ordered the Christmas roll which is a spicy tuna roll with tuna and avocado on top, a regular spicy tuna roll, and a sweet potato roll. The Christmas roll was very good as well as the spicy tuna roll but the sweet potato roll tasted a bit bland. I would order from here again and it seems like they have a nice dining area as well.

Their sushi is consistently fresh and well prepared. There is a fairly limited number of special roll choices, but every one that I tried has been excellent. Honestly, for the price you can't beat this place. Mostly I've had their sushi rolls, both the regular rolls and their special rolls; but tonight I tried their Chicken Ramen. The boiled egg was perfectly marinated and done to perfection; with a slightly soft center. The chicken was grilled and very flavorful. There were three nice thick slices of fish cake in the dish, along with pickled bamboo shoot. The bowl compared very favorably to the ramen I've had in restaurants specializing in ramen. This bowl was priced at $14. The staff are all very friendly and eager to make suggestions. There is not much to say about the ambience of the place. There are probably some 20 - 30 tables evenly spaced in a manner that calls to mind a school cafeteria. This is not a place to bring a romantic date; but for a quick bite before a movie, or for take-out, it's all it needs to be. I'm giving this restaurant five stars because it does what it does so well. No pretense, just very good sushi at a very reasonable price.

Then came the pineapple fried rice with pork belly. Savory, caramelized pork belly met bright bursts of pineapple in a perfect sweet-salt balance. Fluffy rice studded with peas, carrots, and ribbons of egg. My three year old son dove in without hesitation, happily scooping forkfuls of rice and pineapple like he had discovered treasure. No negotiations. Just joy. Fifteen minutes later, box in hand, the real event began. Across melting ice. A sharp jaywalk. A cut through the gas station. A full sprint toward the train station as the gates threatened to close and my family waited. It was an unofficial, record-breaking mile fueled entirely by fried rice ambition. Once the cold air finally left my lungs, I cracked open the box. Steam rose into the winter air. The smell alone was victory. I ate every last grain on that train, a triumphant feast earned the hard way. My wife was not impressed with how close I cut it. I, however, stand by the decision. Some meals are worth the sprint.

A tea leaf salad or Lat phat thoat has "Crispy pea, peanut, sesame seed and garlic oil with ground pickle tea leaf, cabbage and tomato." It was a little funky, a bit like kimchi, with a wonderful textural crunch provided by the peanuts. Palata (deep fried layered & flattened dough), commonly served at street food stalls, is reminiscent of scallion pancakes (without the scallion). In this case, it was served with a chicken, potato, and dahl stew. The saltiness of the stew was tamed by the layered and fatty dough. I might skip the chicken dumplings because those were boiled from frozen, store bought items. The pandan dessert, similar to a bubble tea, was an added extra. I'd definitely go again.

Upon entering, the girl behind the counter just stared at us. No greeting. No direction on where to sit. No smile. We assumed it was self seating so we found a booth. She came over, poured our waters, still said nothing. We had about 45 mins until the restaurant closed so I'm unsure of what the cold attitude was for, as there were still 4-5 other patrons there eating as well. My friend is a vegetarian and ordered the veggie dumplings, and I had the same but with meat. Once the plates arrived, the one set in front of me was green, and his not. I figured I would double check to make sure we had the correct ones - I didn't want him to end up eating the meat ones if it could be avoided. Sure enough, the plates were mixed up. Honestly seemed to be done purposefully because it's very clear they are 2 different orders. The texture was chewy/foamy and they also tasted like old grease. Disappointing but we still had soups to look forward to. Our ramen finally arrived and I was hoping it would be the redemption moment of the evening but it wasn't. It really lacked any depth of flavor. Again the meat was chewy instead of tender. More distracting was how we awkwardly felt rushed as the server was shutting off lights and music...again...with at least 15 mins until the kitchen closing time. She seemed annoyed we asked for to go containers. At no point did she check in with us, refill waters, or even crack any resemblance of a smile. I used to love this little spot when I was in college. It was cozy, delicious, inviting. Couldn't have had more of the opposite experience this time around! And for this reason I would not return. I will travel to Colonie for Kuma Ani for better food and MUCH better service. TLDR; this place is extremely overrated
