I took mom here for a nice Mother's Day lunch after a day out at the Tulip Festival in Albany. We tried to keep it light because we were planning on a big dinner with the family later that evening. We originally planned on eating at Sushi Shine but that was a bit of a disaster, so mom recommended Sawa instead, she had been to Sawa before and really liked it, so off we went. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The interior of this restaurant and dining area is much more elegant when compared to Sushi Shine. Everything was clean and just had more class overall.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Service was very efficient, we were seated promptly and our server, Vinnie, brought us water and fresh tea. We ordered a bowl of Miso Soup ($3.50), Seaweed Salad ($7.75), a Shrimp Tempura Roll ($11.00), and a Godzilla Roll ($16.00). Our soup and seaweed salad were out first (about 5-minutes) and our rolls followed about 10-minutes later. All of the food tasted fresh and had great flavor. I really liked the Godzilla Roll and probably could have eaten two orders if they weren't $16 each; you do get a really nice roll for the money. At the end of our meal, our server brought over a hand-made crochet carnation which was beautiful and unexpected. This was a lovely treat for my mom on Mother's Day and we really appreciate the surprise. If you're visiting in the area, I highly recommend checking out Sawa Sushi, they got a great thing going in Glenmont, and I can't wait to come back next time I'm in the area. read more

This spot lived up to our expectations having tried other restaurants from the same owner. We started with pork gyoza and some drinks - they have a big beer list which we love and Japanese vodka seltzers that were very refreshing. We then shared a regular roll of yellowfin and the Rock n Roll and Tiger Roll. Everything was delicious, tasted fresh and presented beautifully. I got four shrimp (tail on which is super annoying), literally one piece of broccoli, 2 small little corn cobs and a plethora of onions. Nobody wants that much onion. Nobody. Nice little spot for a good lunch special! This place is cute and bright inside, it's nice and modern. A friend and I stopped in for lunch before doing some shopping in the plaza. We both went for lunch specials and a kani salad. I went for a sushi and sashimi lover lunch special ($16) which came with miso soup and salad. She got the two roll combo ($12). These lunches were a steal and everything was pretty good. Service was good. A very average lunch for a great deal. Finally, Friday lunch! I was happy to find I could once again sit at the sushi bar of a US sushi restaurant- it's been over a year since Masa in Columbus Circle. But it would be unfair to compare Sawa to any but local Capital region restaurants, especially after all the changes in the last 18 months. This brand new restaurant in a strip mall is off to a good start, with relatively muted sea-blue-green décor, with 2 giant flat-screen sports TVs facing the 15-seat bar (more full bar than sushi bar), and additional seating in another dozen or so booths. The 50-wine-bottle wall display, disappointingly, did not highlight any sake, although warm sake was available from a 10L box / dispenser/heater machine. The host/ server was polite and helpful, but most of my interaction was with the chefs. Unfortunately, toro is only available on weekends. So, I ordered a selection of maki and nigiri, to allow the chefs to demonstrate their abilities. After receiving the order, one chef prepared me a quick amuse-bouche of shredded surimi atop asparagus and covered with fired salmon. Not bad, but a little unwieldy for just a single bite, once the server brought me a cloth napkin, fork and disposable hashi. Surprisingly, neither the server nor the chef suggested sake with my relatively large order. I assume the paper napkins were reserved for the "Lunch Special Only" crowd. The miso soup and iceberg salad, standard fare for a lunch special, were unremarkable. For the main, the 10 nigiri and two maki were well presented, except the saba and unagi seemed a bit uneven (photo). The remainder were very good: the hotate and hirame, and tamago, the classic method to evaluate a chef. The two simple makis were part of a lunch special, but well prepared. I was eating at the sushi bar, but I was only able to have a few words with the three chefs, as they were quickly and efficiently plating their preparations, and easily outpacing the servers - at one point seven beautiful plates sat atop the sushi cooler, waiting to be served (photo). For a restaurant that was only 25% full, this surprised me, but they are only in their second month. So I ended up going back here a few times for take out in the past few months to give it another go and it seems my original review may have been harsh, or they improved their suppliers because since then the sushi I have gotten has seemed very fresh and not smelly. I've also tried some of their thai entrees and while they aren't great, it's comparable to Tomo which is the next closest type of restaurant nearby to me. I did just try their crab rangoons again on x-mas eve, and I don't understand them really, they're more like a pierogi rangoon, not very crispy at all. The sushi is delicious, I've never had a roll here that I didn't like. I would definitely recommend the spicy crunch scallop, yellowtail scallion, and eel avocado rolls. The lunch combo is fantastic deal. The servers here are always polite and attentive--just don't expect much banter. The atmosphere is what really puts Sawa over the top. We just went to this place for my mother in law's birthday. She picked the place. Being that we live near New York City and experience with another Japanese restaurant in Albany, I didn't have high hope. But I was pleasantly surprised by the food! This was honestly our worst restaurant experience in years. We understand providing leeway during the pandemic, but this was grossly incompetent restaurant management. 1 - There were 3-4 servers for roughly 18-20 tables. This should have been completely manageable. In a span on 5 minutes we had 3 different servers ask us if we put in our drink order yet. One even deferred to us and the table next to us as to who was seated first and who should be served first. 2 - We received one appetizer 40 minutes after seating and another 60 minutes after seating. The rock shrimp was brought to us cold. We received our sushi over 75 minutes after seating, and observed it sitting on the counter for at least a half an hour before it was given to us. 2a - Eighty minutes after being seated, we were presented our final appetizer. We rejected it as we had already been served our entrees. We then watched the server give said appetizer to another table near us as an apology for waiting so long for service and food. 3 - We ordered drinks that never arrived and watched servers repeatedly provide customers with the wrong beverages. 4 - Servers did not know what was on the menu. We had to point to what we wanted and explain what it was. They were bringing plates to different tables and asking if the table ordered it because they didn't know the menu nor who ordered what. 5 - It was FREEZING. Everybody at tables surrounding us were wearing full winter jackets and noted how cold it was to us. All the tables around us experienced the same issues we experienced. I can't even tell you if the food was good or not because of how terrible the service was. The manager should be immediately fired and someone who replaces them needs to be competent enough to train servers on what tables they are assigned to, what's on the menu, what etiquette is, and how to operate a restaurant appropriately. We recommend instead going to Akira, which is right around the corner. We are going to come back in 6 months to try this place again, when they hopefully get their act together. read more
