Omg we visited this place way long time ago!! I wanted sushi and we decided to revisit. It's the same owner with his smiley face behind the sushi bar!!! Yeah. We had so many good choices and chatted him up while eating. We were OTR truck drivers and only came home on occasion. But we would always come from Tacoma to eat. And now the quality is just as perfect. We were in in the afternoon and was empty ( caught them finishing their lunch). But we got great service haha. I didn't even get any pix cause we were so hungry haha. Miso soup and small dishes of the pickles and bean sprouts, Kimchee etc also accompanied! We love that feature. Sooo good. Till next time. I went to Akasaka on Easter with my adult son. I ordered the tempura meal. Everything looked good with good sized portions. The tempura coating was really thick though. The meal came with a nice pickle assortment, white rice and salad with dressing. 8 hours later I had bad diarrhea and missed work today. WE LOVE AKASAKA!! We dine in at least once a week. They have a great variety of sushi and other dining options. We have gotten omakase at the sushi counter and the selections are always very tasty and unique. They have fresh live geoduck and uni. Sometimes they have sea cucumber and abalone. When we dine in with my family, we usually do KBBQ. It is a La carte with a 2 order minimum. I always sneak in an order of geoduck sashimi. Service is ALWAYS the best. They are always so attentive. Our children can get a little wild, but they love to have them. The restaurant is dimly lit as to make it more intimate. They have sushi bar seating, tables, and booths. They also have private tatami rooms. Restrooms are always clean. 100% recommend. We think this is one of the best in Federal Way. read more

The outside of the restaurant was nice and clean. Parking lot is a bit smaller but still lots of parking. When I walked in the host lady was very nice and friendly. There was a few people sitting at the sushi bar for lunch. It wasn't too busy. I ordered to go and took 10 minutes. They have fresh water tanks that have geoduck , clams and oysters. There is a lot of seating in this restaurant. The prices are great! The sushi taste so good and fresh. I ordered 3 different rolls and miso soup. This is definitely some place I am coming again. Akasakas is the best Japanese restaurant anywhere. The owners are amazingly nice and friendly. My whole family has been eating here for over 35 years. We started when they had their first restaurant and followed them here! We are treated like we are part of their family and always made to feel at home. Now that most of their wait staff is gone since Covid Peggy has been doing the hostess, cashier and waitress jobs! So if you think the service is a little slow, believe me it is worth the wait. The best way to describe Akasaka is that it's "okay." My date and I ordered sushi and miso soup. The soup was alright. My avocado roll was the best of the three that I ordered. I didn't think the yellowtail tasted exceptionally fresh, and I've had much better Philadelphia rolls. Service was incredibly slow, and it didn't make sense, because there was hardly any one else in the restaurant. After we were seated and drinking our tea, our server actually came over and wiped the table off while we were sitting there. It was already clean, so it was just kind of odd. The place was definitely clean. It was also nice to be able to sit down inside a restaurant again. Sides were okay: fish cakes, radishes with fish, bean sprouts, kimchi, cucumber kimchi - nothing spectacular Korean seafood soup (1/5): served in a larger than life pot - more than enough for 8 people but not really flavorful or enjoyable. All the seafood inside was crazy overcooked and the crab was mostly just shells. Needs a bunch of salt, seasoning Chicken karage (1/5): one of my favorite appetizers but when it came out we were all disappointed. It was poorly breaded chicken wings on the darker side with no seasoning. Not what karage should be at all Omakase (1/5): Asked which sushi platter we should get and the waitress just said I'll get you sushi for 3 which ended up being omakase which I didn't know until I got the reciept at the end. Came here with my husband, his cousin and his wife for a sushi/Korean dinner treat. The experience was positive. The interior was a little dark to my taste but the food and service was great. There were a lot of tables and we prefer to seat in a traditional Japanese private area with warm towels to clean our hands. There's a huge selection of dishes to choose from the menu. We ordered salmon sashimi, sushi roll, bibimbap and beef hotpot. We enjoyed the quality of the food, the portion and the friendly service. Story time!!! Food=Ok Server=Meh why ? Enjoy reading below First of all, we noticed the servers were all speaking in Korean with their co-workers, but the host greeted us in Japanese when finding a table to sit us in. Well she at least tried to warn the others to welcome the guest, but the others failed to do so. That's alright maybe they were to caught in their conversation. Food: The food I got was tempura udon they had one fried tempura on the side and two fried sweet potato in addition. My food taste great in my opinion when mixed together. However, when the one piece tempura ran out , you were just now plainly eating soup and noodle. The soup was still great, but now it was lacking something else. I think having 2-3 pieces of the shrimp tempura would have been better than adding two fried sweet potatoes instead. Also , make sure to ask for a few napkins because it is very oily. My family got the tonkatsu and beef teriyaki. They made me taste some , but it wasn't to my liking at that time. For me, the tonkatsu was a little dry and the breading was hard. I ended up actually mixing it with my soup to soften the meat. The baked dynamite I got was okay, it was just that it mainly taste like mayonnaise. Every scoop was either a piece of meat , cucumber then the rest was mayonnaise . Too creamy and had that after effect of just eating to much mayonnaise. Service : In the beginning the service was exceptional until the end it just felt like they were kicking us out. I understand they have to close in less than two hours, but that shouldn't be the issue, since there were only two groups at that time and we were even next to each other when there's more tables we could probably gone to have some privacy. My mom and friend felt awkward towards the end because the server just kept on cleaning and cleaning when we're not done yet(it's okay to take away things here and there), before we could even pay the table was wiped cleaned. She was so focused on getting the table done that she have forgotten the water that we asked at least three times. In the end out of the four people only 1 got a cup of water. We didn't even bother asking anymore since we just felt like that lady want us out as soon as possible . In addition, the combo they got was the $19-21 per piece which includes rice, salad and miso soup . My mom asked the lady about the soup because it was missing even towards when we're almost done. She just stated it's not included and walked away, but luckily I took a picture of the menu and showed it to her when she came by again. She just looked gloomy , no hints of smile or joy of working there and been served with a straight face the whole time (maybe she's tired , but that made our experience worst). We didn't have any privacy talking so we actually left pretty early (we could hear our 1 feet away neighbor). It would have been understandable if they were busy , but it was just us and the couple next to us. I'm guessing they put us next to each other so it's easier to clean and help us at the same time. Smart idea , but bad outcome. We can't help but kept over hearing them talk so that was another awkward situation. In conclusion, maybe it's just one of those days the server wasn't at her best , so we took that in consideration and tried to enjoy our food as much as we could. Although, the experience was not perfect , we still gave a good tip hoping that will make her night . I used to like it years ago. But I went recently and was very disappointed. Bathroom was not very clean and there were hanging dust balls coming down from the ceiling heat vents. Service was OK except for the busser loudly banging plates into a large bin at an adjoining table. Baked mussels were less than fresh as were the Maki rolls. Unfortunately a terrible experience yesterday with takeout. I wish all local restaurants well during these challenging closures due to covid, yet simultaneously grateful that curbside is still available for both the business and customers sake. Akasaka, there is no reason for horrible customer service to your curbside customers who are keeping your business open. Upon arrival 5/10, there were a handful of folks waiting for online orders, UberEATS/DD pickups, and new to-go orders. It took 15-30 mins for each of us to be acknowledged one by one. I waited over 70 mins for sushi rolls and teriyaki. A wait is expected, but not that long. A busy dinner is expected, but disrespect, dirty looks, eye rolls (at the fact the crowd was growing outside), locking the front door on us when frustrated, and ignoring everyone who prepaid for their food LONG time ago, is not ok. Advice: turn off the delivery services and stop taking phone orders when you get too backed up and can't handle it. Making money on a busy day but losing long term business is bad. CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG! 30 minutes later, here I am. The line for takeout is about three customers deep. In the back, I can see two employees hustling their a$$ off trying to make online orders happen. Prepping ingredients, making huge batches of rice, slicing slivers of beautiful fish, etc... Yes, it's chaotic... Yes, I'm hungry... But who doesn't appreciate a good hustle? Even though I end up waiting an extra 15 min to get my order, it was worth it. Our takeout meal was legit so damn good. The chirashi bowl had an ample amount of delicious, fresh fish and perfectly seasoned sushi rice. The toro nigiri was well-cut and full of fatty tuna-y goodness. It was obviously a fresh cut. Seaweed salad had a nice sesame oil splash to it-- A slight Korean influence, which played out well. I came here for takeout and was (utter)ly disappointed! I don't want no beef, buuuuut my friend and I waited an hour for our takeout. We ordered a poki salad, Seattle roll, and a side of rice. Yeaaaa, your girl was craving something raw in her mouth at that moment, but clearly I was left unsatisfied. We weren't given an option to choose between salmon or tuna, the waitress decided for us. This is an odd place. The west side of Seattle seems to be shabu shabu free, let alone the Federal Way area. Akasaka has one offering of it at $45 for two. You can opt for beef or seafood but they insist you can't select half and half. There are no other options or sizes. Fortunately they give you 4 small sides and plenty of vegetables and meat. It's almost enough for 3 but not for the big appetite. Like most Asian restaurant in Federal Way, it is run by Koreans. Read: food is spicy! Although we are used to a plain broth for boiling, they put a massive piece of seaweed (our waitress spoke limited English so she was puzzled when we asked if she could remove the kombu before we cooked), a ton of jalapeno slices and yellow onions in the base. Our tongues were burning by the time we finished. They serve the shabu shabu with some sweet zucchini, sesame broccoli, kim chee and fish cake. I liked the broccoli but none of the other offerings appealed. The vegetables included spinach, Napa cabbage, tofu, udon, glass noodles, mushrooms (server didn't know the name of them but they weren't white or shiitake), broccoli, potato (???) and squash (weird). Overall, it was okay but the odd flavorings and choices of vegetable weren't the best. I was glad I chose the nabe yaki udon. I didn't care for the mussel or the fact that they submerge the tempura rendering it soggy but flavor otherwise was good. So my boyfriend and I just ordered off Uber ests delivery from Akasaka Restaurant. I ordered saki nigiri, and spicy salmon seaweed wrapped sushi roll. My boyfriend ordered 2 California rolls, as he is a sushi novice, and doesn't "trust raw fish". My saki nigiri was good, but very thinly sliced. I've Eaten a lot of saki nigiri before, and they usually come in bigger chunks. My spicy salmon seaweed wrapped sushi roll was delicious. It has great heat, and everything tasted very fresh My boyfriend liked his Cali roll over all, but said everything was not worth 30$, and he probably won't be back. I must have drove by this place hundreds of times. Many times I have even looked at it and thought, I need to give that a go, well... I did. For starters, don't judge a book by its cover they say, the outside is a bit misleading. The health inspection rating recently put on the door stated "excellent" and as it should be. For me it was a bit like a movie scene where they enter the Japanese restaurant and laughter is faintly escaping from the tatami rooms along the outskirts. I was enlightened before my senses even had time to adjust. I love the Japanese culture and their dedication to, well their dedication. To anything really. They have a sense of forwardness that we westerners tend to misinterpret for rudeness but really it is quite exactly the opposite in their mind. And I enjoy it. The staff is beaming with hard work and hustle and bustle at every turn. I also seemed to sense a bit of family-run in the environment. There is a difference typically in the staff when it has purpose and consequence involved. They are dedicated to this place and it showed in the outcomes. The food was marvelous, even the things I have never had before, the items that I didn't even order that were served up as complimentary side dishes before the meal arrived, and even the dishes I had to be shown how to eat (The Space Needle). Everything was completely fresh made to order and did not lack any details in its presentation.
