I rarely give 5 stars so I really liked this place and didn't expect it. I would say that this is solid 4.5. Very fresh fish and the nigiri had the proper amount (smaller than fish piece) of rice. The seared fatty tuna was delicious. Had the nigiri special and added salad for $2 at lunch. The dressing was very gingery (not overly though) and tasty and I liked that it was spring mix because it seems healthier. Would definitely eat here again and try some of their non sushi items. And the sashimi next time for sure! read more

First time visit dine-in review of Tan Tan Ramen only. I came in during happy hour on a weekday, so it wasn't busy at all, maybe 2 other tables with guests and no one at the sushi bar. Decor is pretty nice for the size. It's simple, clean looking, but the tables and seating is a bit tight, so it's def not covid or social distancing friendly if you're worried about that. At least the staff wears masks. Waitresses were pleasant and attentive at the right pace for being at 10% capacity. The Chinese sushi chefs did not greet or say anything at all, but I'm not surprised cuz it's most likely not a traditional Japanese run sushi bar. My food review is based on the Spicy Tan Tan Ramen ($13.50 at time of writing). I have to give it a 2.5 out of 5. The noodles weren't very soft and had an abnormal texture; definitely from packaged noodles. The egg wasn't soft boiled, more like a medium-hard boil (see picture). And way too much corn from the can for my liking. Now granted, it's a sushi place, but if they're going to offer Ramen, they should do it right or risk getting lower ratings from Ramen connoisseurs. I'm not claiming to be one, but I can tell good Ramen from not so good ones. *Will update review after trying the sushi next time. read more

VEGAN REVIEW! This classic sushi spot has a variety of good options for vegan and gluten free eaters alike! They have a variety of vegetable rolls that can be made vegan, plus some gluten free dishes that can be vegan as well. We ordered: -- Gluten Free Vegetable Tempura // The gluten free tempura batter was very light and didn't have that classic tempura vibe, but it was satisfying! The veggies could have been a little smaller to have a better ratio of batter to vegetable, but this was an enjoyable appetizer and something my gluten free partner doesn't often get to have! -- Gluten Free Agedashi Tofu // So the vegan version of this dish is pretty bare bones. The sauce and topping are both made with bonito, so not vegan. This means we legit just got gluten free fried tofu lol. After jazzing it up with tamari and sriracha it's actually really good, with a soft middle and crunchy exterior. I hope they find a way to make a vegan version of the sauce or even some other topping to make it more interesting for vegans! -- Buddha Roll // This roll is vegan without the eel sauce on top. The bean curd and avocado add such a nice flavor and texture! I really enjoyed this roll, especially with plenty of ginger and wasabi. -- Cucumber, Avocado Rolls // We always get the classics when we're out for sushi at a traditional place, and these were better than most! Lots of filling, avocado was fresh, not skimpy at all. -- Vege-Lover Roll // This roll is vegan without the cream cheese. It was our favorite of the night! The sweet chili sauce really made each bite exciting. Definitely a must get if you like a little sweetness. We added sriracha and it was amazing! We will definitely be back for more sushi at Aki! While there are still some hiccups eating vegan and gluten free, they are friendly and willing to make changes for specific diets. The food is fresh, tastes great and doesn't break the bank, either. Beverages are affordable, too. $5 Sapporo on tap, wine is under $10 a glass. The atmosphere is casual but refined and traditional; perfect for a lowkey date or dinner with friends. The service is friendly and helpful. If it's a Friday night or weekend, you may wait 10-30 minutes for a table as it is small. My husband doesn't eat fish so this time, we ordered the teriyaki chicken and the beef yakisoba, the meat was very dry, as if cooked straight from frozen or microwaved first. The teriyaki sauce is less than subpar as is the yakisoba. Because of the management listening and being kind, taking at least the yakisoba off the bill, I will go back for sushi and the OMG salmon, but never for cooked food again. For a local Japanese restaurant, this place is amazing! I ordered a variety of sushi and sashimi along with some shrimp tempura. Everything was nearly perfect. If I were to get picky about anything it would be that the tempura was a little greasy but that isn't all that uncommon. The Jalapeño Hamachi which is Hamachi sashimi with a slice of jalapeño and a dollop of what appears to be sriracha sauce had a fantastic flavor and just the right amount of kick to it. The Ebi and Unagi were on par with other sushi restaurants. Both were very well prepared. The stand out, at least for me was the Chutoro Sashimi. It was absolutely amazing! I came soon after Aki Sushi opened, and since I was solo-dining, I opted to sit at the sushi bar. I usually like to put the chef in the drivers seat, so I ordered the Sashimi Omakase. I was presented with at least 9 different cuts of phenomenal sashimi! I don't remember them all, but it included Ikura (Salmon roe), Uni (sea urchin), scallops, amaebi (sweet shrimp with the fried shrimp head), salmon, hamachi, tuna, and monkfish liver (foie gras of the ocean)!!! Saba shioyaki...yes!! I have been craving a proper mackerel meal and finally found it here. It's way more expensive than I'm used to, especially given that no Japanese side dishes are provided with the fish and rice, but I was still grateful to find it in the tri cities. It seemed like I was the only one who had ordered it in a while. Most memorable was the side salad that came with the fish. The dressing was typical. The sushi here is good. The primary reason I return. The customer service on the other hand is atrocious. Just today, I've come for lunch and sat at the sushi bar. I ordered the sushi lunch and sashimi lunch. The server looked at me incredulously and asked if I was sure. I replied and pointed at the two items on the menu and he continued to ask if I meant to order both because "it's a lot". The sushi lunch comes with 8 pieces and the sashimi comes with 10. The portions are not the largest and I enjoy the sushi. It's not the first that I've ordered this way and each time there's some reluctance and a bit of subtle shaming. I was one of two customers sitting at the sushi bar with a nice gentleman sitting two seats to my left. The same server came to him to ask if he was OK and if he needed anything else. For me, I was handed the bill without as much as a "thank you" or if I needed anything else. It's getting to the point where I don't want to come here anymore because of this poor service. This will be our last time visiting this restaurant. We arrived and were seated. The server did not mention the kitchen or service would end at 3pm. When another server walked around, she was rude and did not answer our questions. She told us No! And we were to request any additional orders now. And, our original server never returned. They served us our order and started to clean around us and remove condiments from our table. This type of service was unexpected and completely not what we pay for when going out to a restaurant. Our own children stated they do not want to arrive to a place with this type of service. read more
