This is a chain restaurant throughout the DMV, but I'd say that this location has the best decorations and ambiance than most of the others. The service is a hit or a miss depending on who you get, sometimes great and sometimes a bit slow. But not horrible. The food. So this is known for their ramen. I think that their ramen is solid, not amazing but good. Decent broth flavor and good chew in the noodles, I personally prefer a hotter broth, but it comes out slighter warmer than room temp (not my fav, but still good). The Chashu is usually good most of the time, tender and not too chewy, there was a few times that it was meh, but most of the time it's good! The ramen, 3.5/5 The Izakaya part. The yakitori is lacking. The chicken thigh should be the most tender and flavorful but it was so dry (how can you mess up dark meat?) and lacked depth in flavor. Chicken 1.5/5 The US Wagyu is mediocre. You can tell that it's US cause it's tough. Sometimes it's tender and great and other times it's a bit tough. Steak 3/5 The sushi. Mhm, the sushi is so expensive a bit overpriced doe what you get, and I'm not sure if it's worth it. Their special rolls are ~ $20 range, but the size of the roll is about the same as their "standard rolls" seems not worth that premium price. Usually at most sushi places their special rolls are larger in size and makes it worth paying more for. Even their standard nirgri prices are double than most places. This is definitely the spot to visit if you enjoy sushi and ramen. Akira has very friendly and helpful staff that allowed us to taste some items before we ordered. The eel avocado roll and crunchy crab roll were stellar. The Shrimp Tempura Ramen and Akira Ramen were our entree choices. My wife and I couldn't have been happier! It was perfect. They fry their edamame after cooking it giving it a really fun outside texture. The salt was delicious though got a bit much by the end. Kaarage Ramen - 3* nothing amazing here. I actually liked the side of kaarage chicken more. The wasabi dipping sauce it potent and really good mixed with their non-spicybsauce (think fry sauce). We went to my niece's favorite Ramen place for her birthday, and they made it a lovely experience. First of all, they roped off an area for a 13-person party that wasn't cut off from the room but still felt separated. Which felt like really smart use of real estate and decor elements to signal "separation." The staff was very kind to me, even when there was some confusion about our reservation (which someone allegedly called in to delay by 45 minutes, but no one admitted to). The Volcano Akira Ramen had extremely flavorful broth, lots of lovely accoutrements, and was visually attractive. It was actually a bit too big from my POV, but that was my only complaint. Definitely worth ordering. Other notable orders at the table included: - Tempura shrimp and calamari, both of which had more legs/tendrils than I'm used to see in fried appetizers - Sushi, including the "Empress Kiss" - I absolutely loved the smoked element. It made the entire table smell enchanting, and had a fun "performance" element. But the flavor profile of this specific sushi itself did not blow me away. The service was outstanding. We got there before dinner rush on a Friday. The rush coming in didn't impact the service and they are very polite. I have seen people say the food is pricey but honestly, it's actually not hateful and I have seen a lot worse. Food was very delicious, sushi was great, edamame was crisp and salty. They treated us and our daughter graciously and they made it special for her. We both got ramen and, despite all the unique things in ramen, our daughter ate everything which probably speaks to it's ability to appeal to kids. 5/5 we will be back! I've been to the Akira location in Rockville but was excited to try it out in Frederick after winning a giveaway of theirs. The giveaway win granted free 99 beers but I only had one (I need to bring more people out with me to share the prize!) I really liked the look of this place- clean and a traditional Izakaya feel. Menu- I was hoping for more small plates like an Izakaya usually offers. I ordered some Ramen and the Godzilla sushi roll. Just bad. From the decor which someone thinks is Japanese to the watered down ramen, this place has lots to convice you never to come here again. I've been to Japan and had great Raman. I've had good ramen in the US. But this place has no idea what good (or even mediocre) ramen should be. The broth is obviously from a can and it wasn't even hot. The noodles were purchased at Safeway. The two pieces of pork (in mine) were half cold and tasteless and the chicken bits (wife's) was fried sometime ago and let to sit and become soggy (go next door to Popeye's for much better fried chicken). It was just awful and we both left more than half uneaten. There was nothing in the bowl worth eating. Did I mention it wasn't even hot! Providentially as we were leaving their commissary truck was pulled up to the front door and we could see boxes and boxes of prepared and refrigerated ramen food stuffs being unloaded for the next batch of unwary customers. So there's no chef nor cook in the kitchen, they just take prepared items, throw them in the canned stock, and push it out the door as ramen. It's not. Go find a real Japanese resturant with cooks in the kitchen and get the real deal. It's not here. (But unfortunately I have not found such a place short of going to downtown DC.) The folks writing five star review are either fake or have no idea what ramen should taste like. Two bowls of ramen, one coke, 20% tip; $50. The service was good. It's not their fault. read more

I am torn on leaving this review. We had family in town and decided on this restaurant. We had a reservation for 7:30. When we got there, the table was not ready. We asked how long it would be. We were told for a bit, and that was it. It turned out it was about 5 minutes while they waited for a table to get up as they had paid already. If they had communicated the situation, we would have been fine. They just indicated a bit. It was a very unpleasant experience because it was EXTREMELY HOT in the restaurant. We asked about the temperature and was told that it was because of how the ducts are placed in the restaurant and nothing they can do. If that is true, then I would never return again in the summer. It is sad that by the time we walked out of the restaurant, it was cooler outside than the restaurant in July night. It was hard to enjoy a nice dinner in the heat! On to the service, it was ok. We had to ask for plates since we got 4 appetizers to share. We got sushi and also had to ask for little dish to mix the soy and Wasabi. When the food was delivered to the table by various staff, it was hard to hear and understand what dish it was. Always excited to try a Ramen spot! Happy for all the new things coming to Urbana, and couldn't wait to try this when I saw the sign :) Free surface parking, plenty of it. Went on a Wednesday night, around 7- party of 3 seated right away. Everything was clean (you can tell they clean their menus even, yay!) and a cool decoration theme- simple, but far from boring haha Shout-out to Klaudia! She was a delight and super attentive. Would come back just for her haha We will have to come back to try their sushi sometime, because we focused mostly on ramen for our first visit. We tried the Japanese Croquette (two pieces) for a starter. Knew we needed to save room, so we will have to try other small plates next time as well. The Croquettes were lightly breaded, perfectly fried, and very tasty. The only issue is they were served without a spoon and the corn beneath is harder to eat with chopsticks, unless you go a kernel at a time haha For our main dishes we ordered Karaage Ramen, Shrimp Tempura Ramen, and Short Rib Teppan Rice. Each of these seemed like textbook representations of what you would hope to be served. Tonkotsu is my favorite ramen base, so knowing that I ordered the Shrimp Tempura because I wanted that flavor, but don't like actually eating pork haha it's the perfect solution for me! Perfectly fried shrimp. The Karaage Ramen was also delicious (I had to steal a sample even if it's not the base broth I like personally haha), chicken and dipping sauce also what you would want them to be. Thank the lord that the wait time is now a reasonable time. When we first tried to eat here, we were quoted an hour to ninety minutes. Thankfully we were sat in ten minutes after a quote of thirty. Service was excellent, soon as the food was ready it was on our table. Which is idea for our hungry hungry bellies. I think the ramen could do with a little bit more heat in all honesty. It had flavour despite what others reviewers say, but I like a bit of heat. Maybe ask when taking the order if heat is desired. The tofus was also too soft, a more firm version would work. Huge mark up on the sake! And no option that I saw to order hot ramen. And the mochi could do with a little bit more presentation, not just taken from the freezer and put on a plate. Even though it was the second day and "soft opening" of the restaurant, we had awesome service. Other than have to wait a few minutes to be seated, we were still warmly greeted by the hostesses, and taken to a table right away. The food was decent, since we ordered the chicken karaage for appetizer with spicy mayo. It came out hot and crispy that even my kids enjoyed it. After my husband ordered the volcano ramen, which was not spicy at all. I ordered the classic Akira ramen which is a soy based broth. It was fine but the temperature of the broth could have been piping hot. When I eat ramen, I almost want it boiling hot. Then we ordered the chicken teppan with rice, which was enjoyable. I loved the freshness and quality of the chicken. After we ordered the beef wagyu, which was interesting since it comes with a "little show," where the waitress brings out a hot stone to cook the wagyu. Definitely a neat experience and worth trying. We even ended the evening, with Mochi ice cream. There was three different flavors: mango, green tea, and cookies and cream. It was a nice ending to our meal. The ambiance is clean and trendy, but still cozy for either a family dinner or couple's night out. There are even private rooms for plenty of large group seating. We walked in and I immediately loved the design, cleanliness, and layout. We sat at a booth near the window. I went to the bathroom before order and it was so cool. I loved the colors and ambiance. The light on the mirror was pretty awesome because you could change the brightness..I kind of want one . My husband ordered the kyoto matcha ipa, which he really enjoyed. We ordered a variety of sushi rolls and yakitori- corn and one chicken thigh. The have lables on the menu for those who have allergies, but the gluten free options are limited. They also have gluten free soy sauce, so just be sure to ask. They had a robotic server, which was pretty cool. Our food came out pretty quickly and looked fresh. What a disappointment. This restaurant is located in Urbana which is a slightly pricier area of the county so I expected this to be a somewhat elevated experience. Inside is super nice but god the food is awful. The waygu ribs and rice were a major let down. Rice was flavorless and came with no sauce. The short ribs had no bones like pictured and was also rubbery. The fried chicken was soggy lol then the buns had spring mix. One of the things my picky kids agree on is ramen but they are particular about what goes in it. Tried this place during a break in a soccer tournament. Got there a bit before the usual lunch time and were seated right away. Our server was very helpful and polite and got the kids just what they wanted. We've been to Tsunami in downtown Frederick several times but I wanted to try someplace new. Based on the reviews, I was expecting a lot more, but the food, atmosphere, and service were ok but nothing special--certainly nothing that merits prices that are across the board higher than Tsunami. We got the volcano ramen, and my companion said it wasn't that spicy. I sampled it and it was ok but not "wow." I got the palate teaser sushi, and it was a good specialty role, but again, not a $22 roll. They must have a beer and wine license only because there is no full bar/cocktail menu. I went back to look at the reviews, and there's a suspicious samey-samey pattern to a lot of them, all hitting the same beats (atmosphere! name your server! we asked them for recommendations! name some dishes!
