Service was friendly but salad was "overdressed". My gyro meat and salad had half a bottle of olive oil on it and that's not including the Greek dressing. Food was delicious and as long as you don't order from dinner menu is relatively fast. I asked about one of the dinner plates and they said 45 minutes (it was during lunch time). This gem is located around the corner from my house, so whenever I don't feel like cooking, it's my go-to. Owned and operated by a Greek couple and a father, they serve mouthwatering meals six days a week. While I was in college, The Acropolis was under different ownership. I wasn't able to eat there much as I was paying my own way. It was good then, as it is now. The gyros are very popular and very good. Topped with generous amounts of meat, everything spills out of the pita. Extra napkins needed. When I want something more substantial, I order the pastitsio, a Greek take on lasagna. Savory and cheesy, it hits the spot. A little noticed item is the lemon rice soup. Tangy and thick, it's perfect on a cold winter day. My absolute favorite are their fries. Using a thick cut shoestring potato, these rectangles of perfection are fried until they are crisp on the outside, but still fluffy on the inside. It was delicious and rivaled any I have ever had before. The hummus appetizer was decent and was a generous serving. I was so excited about the rest of the meal but was quickly disappointed by the blandness of everything else. My salad was so tired. No tang. No zip. The fries were unseasoned. Decided to try this restaurant in Lafayette Indiana today. There were lots a great ratings and I love Gyros so I gave it. A whirl. As soon as I entered I felt the Greek presence of authenticity. The gentlemen asked me immediately what I wanted to order and I was shell shocked by the VAST menu. I went r for the Athenian style Gyro and it did not disappoint at all. The sheer size of the sandwich was impressive and the fries to boot were fresh and super hot! I also topped it off with a piece of Baklava that was super delicious as well. We ordered the Gyro with fries and the shrimp basket. The Gyro meat was very juicy and flavorful. It took less than 10 minutes from ordering to our food being ready. This is the place where I fell in love with Greek food. I started coming here as a kid and always ordered the gyro. I since moved away and have been gone for twenty years. During that time, I did a lot of traveling, including to Greece and the food at Akropolis was just as good as any authentic meal I ate in Greece. Upon returning home for the first time in twenty years, this was one of my first stops. While ownership has since changed, the food is just as good as I remember it. I've only ever ordered a gyro here because I just can't get over how good they are! They are so full of meat! I do look forward to exploring more of their menu. It also seemed like they were skimping on the tomatoes, onions and sauce, which didn't help with how dry the gyro tasted (I saw similar comments by other members on yelp). I called at 3:44 to order a gyro dinner and he was already in a bad mood so I ordered as fast as I could, he told me the food would be ready in 10 minutes but then realized I ordered the wrong rice so I called again at 3:47 to change it and he said the rice was "already made". I asked him if he just made the lemon rice in 3 minutes just for me and he said "yes" which is a total bs... The rice is always pre-made, so I told him if he could change it because I didn't want that one, he said "thank you" and hung up on me... Akropolis was purchased and the food is slightly different now. The interior was somewhat redone in the past couple years after the transaction, but it's basically the same layout and vibe. I finally got back and had a gyro and fries. The tzatziki has been improved. The meat is pretty much the same. Pita was not very soft. Toppings were good quality - tons of onions and tomatoes. On the whole this is an improvement as Meat and Tzatziki are the primary factors of import when judging a gyro. As a result, Akropolis has jumped one spot in the Greater Lafayette Gyro Standings. The family who owns and runs this restaurant couldn't be nicer- service with a smile for sure. The food is a really good bargain, definitely less expensive than the other Greek place in town. The portions are large and you definitely get a lot for your money. The veggies are fresh and the feta cheese is amazing. I tend to stick to the same thing every time but I've tried a few other things and everything so far has been really flavorful and delicious.
