Decided to stop by while I was in the area to pick up an Italian sub sandwich with mayo and extra Italian dressing. Well, we ordered two. Then my hubby said their tortellini salad was a hit. I ordered my sandwiches and then walked around, taking in the location/store that my hubby had so many memories at. I see there is an area with slots in the connecting room next door. Upon arriving home only to find there was not any Italian dressing on either sandwich or surprisingly in the salad. The sandwiches and salad were dry until we added our own Italian dressing, and the salad is spicy, not refreshing at all. It wasn't until we finished eating that we did a search and found that the family sold the store a while back due to the passing of the original owner. We can say we tried it but will not return. Well I took Friday off and made this a bucket list to make a comparison to Old School Manny's deli and cafeteria. Surprisingly the food for their corned beef deli is delicious in another way. Quality was good it's not as greasy or thick as Manny's corned beef which you'll have a food coma if you ate a whole corned beef or pastrami sandwich over there here the way they make their sandwich is similar to Jason's deli if anybody remembers Jason's deli. Jason's deli was not bad but it wasn't greasy if you're the type that likes greasy salty corned beef if it's done right like Manny's then that's what you should go otherwise if you don't like that feel this might not be a restaurant or cafeteria to eat at. The corned beef in regards to quality their Mile high corned beef was light and delicious it's fresh too just like Manny's but not greasy and heavy. I have seen this on Facebook as well and they're Italian versus being a kosher Jewish and they've been around too but not as old as Manny's since they've been around since 1960 whereas Manny's has been around since 1942 and is as old as my parents. Ambience was very casual and friendly it was my first time I had a dress to the cashier it's not really a cafeteria style but you can still sit down and eat I would most likely come back also because of the prices since Manny's tends to be expensive for their sandwiches. This was expensive too but then again I ordered a chili and a tiramisu I was going to get a potato salad just to find out they had soups. If you're around Franklin Park in like Mom and Pop delis this is another good option and don't want to drive to Chicago for Manny's and an alternative to Jason's deli in oakbrook or in Chicago surprise I did not know the other Jason's deli at the four stars. Being an Italian deli it's going to be a bit more limited to certain kosher dishes so don't expect to have knish or matzo ball soup but they will have chicken noodle soup. read more

I had a taste for a hot pastrami on rye sandwich around my suburb area. So I yelped my wish and they brought me to this place so where we goo... I love supporting local businesses. Not only is this a deli place but it's also a liquor store too. They have plenty of parking across the street of their own private parking lot and when you get here it looks hidden from Manheim Road. It's been around on the 1960s when you go inside it's a bit outdated but the sandwiches will speak for itself! We followed the signs where to order. They slice the deli meats fresh as you can watch them make your sandwich in the middle of the store next to the registers and they also have a hot carousel of slices of different pizzas, we tried their sausage pizza. It was ok, your typical sliced pizza. They have 1/2 of wall of assortment of chips and different sizes too. Next to it are cold sides like olives, crab salad, I think I also saw potato salad and egg salad in single serving sides. Next to the deli, they have Italian desserts, like cannolis and tiramisu, and also an assortment of soups and chili. In the back of the room was a few tables to sit and eat your meal also, they have an assortment of liquor from beer and wine. When we sat in the back, it was nostalgic because we saw so many different kinds of refrigerators, Classic and New, with assortment of drinks and liquor And hard liquor sold behind the register. And on the other side in the back area, they had assortment of carbonated and non-carbonated bottled drinks. You can also help yourself with caffeinated or decaf coffee station as well. In the other room next to the bathrooms, they also have poker slots and more tables to sit. So making our sandwiches did take a bit little longer than your typical Subway sandwich place. They served it on styrofoam plates. This was a late lunch for us around two on a weekday, but notice there was a pick up of people waiting in line to place their order for their fresh sandwiches. I'd like to try some other sandwiches on their menu as they stated they have one of the Ultimate submarine sandwiches in town! Here is our order: Mile high hot pastrami on rye bread sandwich with half a dill pickle - hot pastrami was nicely thin and warm and piled on high and the rye bread was soft. The condiments I had was yellow mustard horseradish. I liked the pickle, it was cool and crunchy and a pretty good size and not too sour. A bag of Jays bbq chips A bottle of unsweetened iced tea Mile high corned beef on rye bread, sandwich r with half a dill pickle - hubby loved the corned beef thinly, sliced and piled on high. Bag of barbecue chips Pop Overall, I will definitely come here for the mile high hot pastrami and corn beef sandwiches can't wait to try their other sandwiches off the menu. read more

Old school deli and bar. The service is very friendly and has a lot of return customers. The deli is in the front with seating in the back. Otherwise, there is a bar attached to the side. The prices are very reasonable for the sandwiches, but a pricey for the sides. They do have daily sandwich specials also. On Friday, it's the egg salad sandwich. It's strange that I'm not finding a review written for them. I've been buying subs sporadically since I was a teenager. Sometimes when taking framily to the airport, a classic sub sammy with a tourist, or a leisurely meal solo during a not too busy work day. Speaking of which, always a prime spot to grab a sub since you can always find an open seat if dining in. Just keep in mind they do not keep waiters on hand. All purchasing occurs at the counter. Over the years A & J's have had their share of ups and downs as seen in the many reviews across the web. Pre-pandemic I wasn't too keen because of issues with bread freshness which could be related to those working their shop or supply issues at the time. During the pandemic though they were one of few available eateries for those of us still having to hit the road. We could rely on them for a decent sandwich and a cold beer. For some time now, I feel as though they have been in a renewed prime. Submarine sandwiches, to-go prepared salads (Cole slaw, macaroni salad, etc) or pizza by the slice, it's all tasty goodness. Also there is a ton more relationship building with customers with the random conversations that come with ordering. Personally, I am no fan of olives but on their slices, it is quite a-okay to be honest. With the pandemic came a difference in charges but nothing so awful that it should stop you from buying. I'll provide an example. The other day I took broil for subs and beers and he loved it. We got the following; two bags of snack sized Krunchers chips, an eggplant parm sandwich & a large two meat sub w/ add-on cost for cheese. Two sides of differing salads (macaroni salad / Cole slaw). All of that with tax for about $35. Had enough sandwich leftover for a second meal. If there was anything that could be gripe worthy, it'd be the oil used in their giardinera. I'm not a fan of gmo soybean oil which unfortunately many markets are switching usage to mainly because of the cost vs EVOO/ olive oil. GMO soybean pimps had been hard at work (even pre-pandemic) getting the restaurant industry to make the change. It's an oil that is not heart healthy but is hella inexpensive. read more

I've been eating here since 2005. Family owned and operated. I mostly get subs, for work, but occasionally order an entree. I've had the egg plant parm quite a few times and it is delicious. Their pizza is mediocre though, if I'm being honest. But to completely erase that fact is this, you will be very hard pressed to find a better sandwich anywhere. Period. From the fresh sliced cold cuts to the wonderful bread! The service is, and always has been, fantastic. Also I strongly recommend the chicken breast salad and get the balsamic dressing. The first time I went to Al & Joe's was in the mid- 1970's. I was a Limousine Driver and always looking for a new place to get food. Al&Joe's was a small Italian food store and they had a reputation as a go to spot with the Drivers. They only had six different sandwiches three Italian and three American. I had one of the American sandwiches and it was totally delicious. Since then my Family and I moved to Franklin Park and I have bought sandwiches there. It has changed from a food store and became a deli and liquor store. The sandwiches are top of the line which is something to say As there are two awesome places to get sandwiches less than a mile away beginning with Ozzy and Cochiaro's . I recommend. All three of them will not let you down but I think Al & Joe's is the best! read more

Got there and sure even, various fire departments were doing some cross training at O'Hare, decided to get some great Italian food. Noticed that today was Corn beef or Pastrami Day at A&J. We went ahead and got us some Corned Beef on Rye Bread with all the "fixin's". Besides there Subs, Pizza's Anti Pasto sides, the list goes on! I have yet to be disappointed by A&J! Staff has a great sense of humor. The Seating area on the side is so retro in a great way. Will stop by there, for cocktails too. Looks like I may need to skip dinner tonight. Joe, who recently passed, was loud and funny and had the best personality and energy . He talked to everyone and he was one of those people you can stand there and talk and listen to him all day long . Gia, his daughter, whom we consider a friend , is a wonderful person with a heart of gold . She makes the best subs that's for sure . We have been going there for so long that she knows just how I like them . I can't say enough good things about things about their gnocchi in vodka sauce !!! My husband and I love coming here. Our go to sub is the American. The bread has a crunchy exterior with a soft interior. Their mayo is so good and I'm pretty sure it is made in house. The meats are fresh and good. I just wish they would put more meat on it. Their prices are high. The large pictured here will cost you $12 and some change. Exactly the type of establishment one may say we are slowly losing to fast food junk & chains... My uncles grew up round these parts & always talked about Al & joes - so I met a buddy here for lunch today & had an absolutely killer sandwich on fresh tasting, crispy yet tender bread for a nice price. Real sell beyond just a great meal, was the folks were so kind & nice + the shop/deli has a really nice corner store atmosphere. We hung out for a while and just chilled. Wow! It's been 10 Years since I wrote a review for this place. They now have a killer corn beef sandwich and their subs are one of the best in the city and suburbs, I just flat out love them. Great bread, fresh sliced deli meats, excellent cheeses and fresh veggies makes for a wonderful sub. I see from their take out menu that they now have a bar with dinner starting at 4 PM. Good for them. I may have to try that in the near future. Beware that there are now two lines for ordering sandwiches. So if you want a corned beef sandwich you'll have to order from the corned beef/pastrami line. Then if you want a sub you'll have to go over to the sub line and wait in that line! Couldn't the sub folks just turn around to the corned beef sandwich folks and say make a CB for this guy waiting in the sub line? I should take away a star just for that silly inconvenience but both the sandwiches are really good so I'll leave it at five stars but be warned. Pizza slices too! read more

I always like trying Italian Subs at random neighborhood delis & this one was spot on. Their Italian is generously dressed with some kind of dressing or oil mix & boosts flavor and the bread was soft & fresh. I saw that they were mostly known for their Corned Beefs & Pastramis, so I had to also give those a try & I'm glad I did! Both were stacked thicc with a bunch of sliced goodness. The sandwich that stood out to me most was the Corned Beef. Literally just melts in your mouth. I would definitely come back for another Corned Beef. The only downside was the price. I think it was around $14 each for the Corned Beef & Pastrami. This is more than their usual price due to a meat shortage & them also having to pay more for ingredients because of Covid-Tax. Unless I'm really craving that Corned Beef, I'd probably just wait till prices get back to normal. Nonetheless, still 5 stars in my book! read more
