Bern wanting to go to for about a year. Today we took a drive there and had the best corned beef sandwich. We added the Swiss as suggested. Boy was it tender and delicious. Even the pickle was good. Definitely will go back and try other sandwiches on the menu.

I had a taste for a hot pastrami on rye sandwich around my suburb area. So I yelped my wish and they brought me to this place so where we goo... I love supporting local businesses. Not only is this a deli place but it's also a liquor store too. They have plenty of parking across the street of their own private parking lot and when you get here it looks hidden from Manheim Road. It's been around on the 1960s when you go inside it's a bit outdated but the sandwiches will speak for itself! We followed the signs where to order. They slice the deli meats fresh as you can watch them make your sandwich in the middle of the store next to the registers and they also have a hot carousel of slices of different pizzas, we tried their sausage pizza. It was ok, your typical sliced pizza. They have 1/2 of wall of assortment of chips and different sizes too. Next to it are cold sides like olives, crab salad, I think I also saw potato salad and egg salad in single serving sides. Next to the deli, they have Italian desserts, like cannolis and tiramisu, and also an assortment of soups and chili. In the back of the room was a few tables to sit and eat your meal also, they have an assortment of liquor from beer and wine. When we sat in the back, it was nostalgic because we saw so many different kinds of refrigerators, Classic and New, with assortment of drinks and liquor And hard liquor sold behind the register. And on the other side in the back area, they had assortment of carbonated and non-carbonated bottled drinks. You can also help yourself with caffeinated or decaf coffee station as well. In the other room next to the bathrooms, they also have poker slots and more tables to sit. So making our sandwiches did take a bit little longer than your typical Subway sandwich place. They served it on styrofoam plates. This was a late lunch for us around two on a weekday, but notice there was a pick up of people waiting in line to place their order for their fresh sandwiches. I'd like to try some other sandwiches on their menu as they stated they have one of the Ultimate submarine sandwiches in town! Here is our order: Mile high hot pastrami on rye bread sandwich with half a dill pickle - hot pastrami was nicely thin and warm and piled on high and the rye bread was soft. The condiments I had was yellow mustard horseradish. I liked the pickle, it was cool and crunchy and a pretty good size and not too sour. A bag of Jays bbq chips A bottle of unsweetened iced tea Mile high corned beef on rye bread, sandwich r with half a dill pickle - hubby loved the corned beef thinly, sliced and piled on high. Bag of barbecue chips Pop Overall, I will definitely come here for the mile high hot pastrami and corn beef sandwiches can't wait to try their other sandwiches off the menu.

The American and Italian subs were delicious. The service was great. The ambience not bad they are renovating.

Old school deli and bar. The service is very friendly and has a lot of return customers. The deli is in the front with seating in the back. Otherwise, there is a bar attached to the side. The prices are very reasonable for the sandwiches, but a pricey for the sides. They do have daily sandwich specials also. On Friday, it's the egg salad sandwich. I got the egg salad sandwich on French bread with gardinera. The egg salad was good and a lot. It was hard to eat on French bread, though, but that won't stop me from getting it again.

We get the steak sandwiches on Monday's. Couldn't skip the pizza's by the slice this time. Food is always delicious and fresh. The staff are friendly and the prices are great as well.

After an early start & some physical exertion, my Boss recommended we go and get a bite. We were close to Al & Joe's, so off we went. Got there and sure even, various fire departments were doing some cross training at O'Hare, decided to get some great Italian food. Noticed that today was Corn beef or Pastrami Day at A&J. We went ahead and got us some Corned Beef on Rye Bread with all the "fixin's". Besides there Subs, Pizza's Anti Pasto sides, the list goes on! I have yet to be disappointed by A&J! Staff has a great sense of humor. The Seating area on the side is so retro in a great way. Will stop by there, for cocktails too. Looks like I may need to skip dinner tonight. Established over 62 years and going strong. Yum. P.S. Heal fast Joe! Cheers & Mangia!

So I had to find a new Italian deli in the area and this place had an authentic Italian sub on the menu with prosciutto, Genoa salami, capicola, provolone cheese, Italian dressing, lettuce and tomato that I added raw onions, hot giardiniera and mayo. It's a deli/mini mart/gambling machine/cafe with friendly service. The meats were skimpy was my first thought, see my pictures. My first thought after taking the first bite was WOW this Italian hoagie bread was perfect/fresh with that great chew/pull. Even with the skimpy meat the whole combination with me tweaking the sandwich was so fu#king delicious I got a second one to take back to WI for dinner. The area probably has a better Italian deli the residents will tell you but I'm in town once a year so next year I will try another Italian deli until I find one to start a new tradition like my old friend for many years that is no more. My final thought is that the price point is similar to the chain sub restaurants with a high quality sub sandwich and why anyone in the area that goes to a chain with this gem is beyond me because they do an authentic Italian sub very well.

The beef wasn't that great, the peppers tasted like they had been soaking in tomato sauce all day. Meat lacked flavor. BUT the beef isn't the reason for the trip. It came as a great recommendation! We didn't have it for a while since we live the low-carb life but were thrilled to learn they do a "sub in a tub". I love their tuna salad/sub. Their bread is soft, back when I could eat it. They don't overfill it with mayo either and add some mild peppers or hot on request. I like that they don't have onions at the deli so it doesn't overpower everything else. My husband typically loves the club. They rolled a generous amount into a container and I used scissors to quickly and easily cut it. It was a perfect lunch and I have enough for another tomorrow! For $8, or $11 for a generous tuna scoop, you can't beat it. Staff is also quick and friendly at the deli, as well as checkout. Johnnie's is an icon, just based on the experience of listening to that guy talk. Ah, but he's long gone, and new ownership abounds. But the beef is still great. One of the best beef sandwiches around, combos that are seasoned just right, and Italian ice That hits the spot on a hot summer day. I think the hot dogs are just a throw in, and the fries are decent. But it's the beef that keeps bringing you back. Not much ambiance, unless you want to stand and watch the cars roll by on North Avenue, but the smell of the sausage cooking is intoxicating. The price of the beef has gone up, and I swear it's a tad smaller, but if you're in the neighborhood, nothing hits the spot quite like a Johnnie's beef sandwich. I can still hear the big guy...."Whaddah need, gimmie a beef, wet, sweet and hot, That'l be nine fiffy two, bag it, next!" I miss him...

Choosing an "off" night (example: a weeknight) or during a less-than-ideal time (example: during a snowstorm) will give you the quickest experience for Johnnie's as the line can get LONG and parking is terrible (tiny lot). Note: this was my second visit as my first attempt, on Father's Day 2025, was a magnificent bust. We had no line and plenty of seating this time! They have a big menu, but save the cute stuff for a follow-up visit and get a beef (& hot dog is really hungry). Do yourself a favor and get an Italian Ice too, time of year is irrelevant. You can thank me after your tastebuds recover from being overwhelmed. Is the food THAT much better than other spots, you ask? Not handedly, no. But the whole experience, especially if you wait in line (in the sun as there is zero shade), is what makes this place great. It really is a delightful Chicago experience. Put Johnnie's at the top of your list this summer, plan accordingly, and ENJOY!
