This place has decent middle eastern food if you are looking for cheap, college food. This place is located on St. Joe's campus on City Avenue. We came right when they opened. We ended up getting a desi cheesesteak and baklava. It took awhile to get our order. The place has seating but no public restrooms. A lot of college kids come here to pick up their foods. The desi cheesesteak had good amount of chicken. I really liked how the chicken was cut into pieces. The cheesesteak also had fried onions, chili and other spices. The bread was pretty basic. The baklava wasn't worth getting at all. It was very big but tasted like it was bought at Costco. It definitely didn't taste freshly made. read more

On the hunt for shawarma as always, stumbled upon this place in an area I don't usually frequent. Service was really nice and he helped me decide what to get, which was the lamb wrap. The meat was nice, I haven't had cheese with shawarma meat before so that was interesting and I didn't mind it as much as I thought I may. The wrap itself was pretty substantial, which made me feel better about the price that was a little higher than I would have wanted. I do with they offered other sides than fries and onion rings if it's going to be included, like a salad. And it took probably double the amount of time I was told, which I don't fully understand as when I was there I was one of like two customers. If you're in the area it's a good option. I ordered the Mixed Al Sham Entree ($20.99) and the Double Burger ($10.99), and the experience was extremely disappointing -- especially for a place that presents itself as a Middle Eastern restaurant. The Mixed Al Sham Entree came in a surprisingly small portion. For $20.99, the serving size was very underwhelming -- not even enough to fill a normal one-time meal box. For a Middle Eastern entrée (which are usually generous), this portion felt especially unacceptable. The Double Burger was the biggest shock. What they delivered was not a burger by any standard, and definitely not something you'd expect from a restaurant. It came with only two large, unseasoned, unsalted beef patties and two tiny low-quality buns. No cheese, no lettuce, no tomato, no pickles, no sauce -- nothing. Just two dry patties between two small non-burger buns. When I called the restaurant, they said "that's how our Double Burger is." When I mentioned I would leave an honest review, they suddenly offered accommodation -- but at that point it felt too late. This place is labeled as a Middle Eastern restaurant, but the food quality, portions, and presentation did not reflect that at all. The rice, not so good. The rice seemed as if it was sitting for a long time. The food is kind of pricy but I'm sure that's due to inflation. I would definitely be back. Love love love this place! Super fresh, quality ingredients and well seasoned! My favorites are the falafel and salmon cheesesteak & wrap. Sooooo good and excellent portions, it's always enough for 2 meals. The fries suck lol but it's not a big deal. Delivery orders are always correct and pretty fast. I've also tried the west philly location and the food is consistent. For some reason the grilled salmon platter comes with rice that isn't very seasoned but it's still really good. Currently my favorite middle eastern food place in Philadelphia. Absolutely amazing food and great service. Everyone from the staff and owner very nice and friendly. This location have plenty of seating for small group. Location is very clean as well. Kitchen is open, so you can see them cooking. Food is fresh and very tasty. When you go, order what everyone else is getting. Shawarma or kabobs. I was in the mood for wings and fries just as the city shut down. The wings are huge mungous fatty and just nasty. I believe they were cooked just to time so soggy skin and that meat that's just just at white. It was PACKED I was the only nut not getting Shawarma. So go with the crowd, add some rice and be happy. FINALLY something to keep me motivated to attend grad school at SJU!! Al-Sham chicken and rice - and the insurmountable debt I am incurring - are definite motivation to finish up my master's program. I accidently came about Al-Sham as I was driving to the nearby Starbucks. I am so glad that my parking space had me face toward them because I was able to finally get some delicious Halal food. Having grown up eating at the Halal guys in NYC, I was very skeptical of what this place could offer. I cautiously ordered the NYC-style chicken and rice, and boy was I NOT disappointed! It came in a container filled to the rim with delicious rice and salad, with the chicken hot off the grill just wafting it's delicious scent into the air. I could barely wait for it to cool down to take my first glorious bite. Needless to say, it was amazing. Now, was it JUST like the NYC Halal guys platter? No. But it is absolutely worth a trip over to the corner shop if you are in the area. It is also a much more satisfying option to the Larry's across the street or any of the other fast food in the area. The platter itself was about $9, and I had leftovers for a second portion. On my second visit,I had the chicken pita sandwich, which was JUST as amazing and HUGE! So make sure to come hungry! As for the shop itself, they have plenty of seating and are centrally located if you want to just walk over from the SJU campus. The same food you could find at any food truck local neighborhood store or other halal place in Philly The service behind the counter was lacking as well. However when I went to order from their extensive menu I had ONE question about an item that I was not familiar with. When I politely asked about the dish, both the young lady who took my order and the male cook showed soooo much attitude and when I asked. They were impatient and short with the answer shrugging their shoulders and claiming that they "did not know" what the ingredients were and proceeded to speak in their native tongue with one another. Though I thought they were rude I still placed my order as I had skipped breakfast and by lunchtime was pretty hungry. It was also considered memorial day so not much was open. I see this as a place where maybe some folks who aren't familiar with "ethnic" food might feel like they're trying something different. I think they cater to that crowd. The meats tasted like what you'd get in a hotdog. There were very few veggies, too. Where they do well on is value. Way more food than what you'd get for the same price at Popeyes and the like. We found this gem on City Ave after a concert at the Mann. We love Mediterranean food, and this place was open for dinner late on a Saturday night. You order at the counter for takeout or there are a few tables in the restaurant. We ate in. We split a chicken shawarma salad and a serving of baba ganoush with pita. Both were delicious. Best baba ganoush I've ever tasted. There was so much that we took more than half of it home. The tossed salad with chicken shawarma was also big enough to share, with leftovers enough for two lunches the next day. read more

Al-sham is a corner spot with basic seating on either side of it, nothing fancy but very clean and a nice spot to drop into. Now the food, started off with a Tabouli salad, cucumber yogurt and paired with a Chicken Shawerma with a seasoned brown rice and garlic sauce. What can I say, after the second or third bite I was transported back to Amman or to the Becca valley , this is authentic middle eastern food, fresh, flavorful, wholesome and delicious!
