My car's starter had a problem and they were able to fix my car by the next day. It's been a few months now and I haven't had any problems, so in terms of service and the quality of the work done, I have no issue. Price was okay (they actually ended up charging me a little bit less than the original estimate), but let's be real here: if there was actually a cheap mechanic out there, everyone in the greater Bay Area would be going to him. My one complaint was that they removed my old license plate frame and replaced it with an Alameda Auto Lab frame without asking. Yes, my old frame was the standard one I got from the dealership when I bought the car, but still... I was not too pleased about that. My alternator needed replacing ASAP. I looked on Yelp and found Alameda Auto Lab in the desired location I was looking for near my work and with decent Yelp reviews. I dropped my truck off at 12:30pm on a Friday for the replacement and an oil change. It was completed at 4:30pm that day with a courtesy call from the shop. I was delighted. The staff was personable and knowledgeable on a variety of makes and models. They also have a fantastic oil change special on their website that does not charge extra if you have a truck or non average model. Prices are reasonable in general too. I will definitely be back. After Toyota Of Alameda closed I wasn't sure where to take my car for quick, dependable, service. I've had some problems in the past with Royal Auto Repair, so I decided to try Alameda Auto Lab based some positive Yelp reviews. This is going to be another one. Robert was very accommodating in doing my repairs on short notice. He found that I needed an oil change (which I knew ahead of time) in addition to the maintenance that I took the car in for, but I never felt like the shop was looking for additional expenses to stick me with. Repairs were done quickly, for an extremely reasonable price and they even gave my car a long overdue cleaning. We didn't know the area and our car broke down. Between Yelp reviews and some from a local parents group this place came recommended. These folks are clean and organized. We got back on the road for only 77 bucks!! They could have ripped us off as we know nothing and don't live near by so not likely to be regulars but...they didn't. This is the only auto repair shop I will go to. I drive 30 miles to have them service my car. When I drop my car off there I get a call telling me how much it is going to be and it will be ready the next day. I will admit to being in a slight hurry once and it was repaired and ready to go that same day. I drive a Honda and it runs great. This auto repair business charges reasonable rates for basic repairs and maintenance. They replaced my brake pads, air conditioning gas (freon), oil and brake fluid. But were not able to find the cause of my "Check Engine Light" problem. That brings them down a notch, in my book. However, I get the sense that this is an honest business, because the prices they charged were lower than most places and they performed good work for most of the services I needed. Let me just say that I went into Alameda Auto Lab with very high hopes and a completely trusting attitude. The owners are family friends and I just *knew* they would take good care of my car. I was very sadly mistaken. I took my car to this place several times, a few of which were uneventful oil changes. However, the times I took my car to them for repairs (window was stuck, car was making a rattling noise,etc) I felt totally cheated. They never fixed ANYTHING. I repeat, ANYTHING. They claimed they ordered and replaced the window's motor, but the minute I got the car home, the window began acting up again. Also, they claimed they investigated the rattling noise my car made, and 1/2 a tank of gas and several days later, they simply gave the car back to me and said they couldn't find anything wrong...? The car made the noise until the day I sold it, which wasn't long after. It seemed like every time I took the car to them, it came back to me with a different problem. I would definitely advise against taking your vehicle to Alameda Auto Lab. I surely would not trust them ever again. read more

I used to take my car here because of the positive reviews and proximity to work. My last experience however completely ruined my trust in the business. I took it in to get my brakes checked, and was told that I needed new pads and rotors resurfaced. After I picked up the car and paid for the service, which was expensive for a brake job, I continued to hear noises. I thought I was paranoid, but took the car in another shop for a second opinion anyway. I was surprised to learn that the rotors were clearly un-resurfaced and front brakes were almost out. Got the job done, and paid nearly half the price. While experiences will be subjective, I would recommend customers to explore options. read more

Went in for a tune up and came out with a bad stop light switch and no break lights. I believe the lights were working before we brought the car in. Even better, the mechanic (Luis) left my wife leave at night with no break lights rather than keeping the car one more day and fixing them. I don't get this, the part is about $50 plus another $50 for labor. If these guys had a clue about customer service and business sense, they would have agreed with the customer, fixed the lights, and gained a new customer. I took my car to get checked out today as my headlights have seemed dim while driving at night. The team did a thorough assessment and let me know that the lights were fine and only seemed dim because of some dust covering the lights (I drive on dusty roads to get to work). They cleaned off the dust and showed me that the lights were fine. Also, they did not charge me! I offered to pay or leave a tip but they kept declining. I went there based on Yelp reviews for a reparin on a Volvo S80. I had a terrible experience. Went in with a front end and tire replacement job, as well as replacing a light bulb. When the car was picked up, none of the climate controls worked. No heat, no AC. Car was returned to the shop within minutes. The owners tried to fix the repairs but were unsuccessful and denied any responsibility. They told me to take the car to the dealer. The dealer found that the climate control software had been wiped off the system and it cost $200 to diagnose and repair. I returned to the Autolab to give the owner the chance to take $200 off of the the $1039 repair that I paid for, but they declined to accept any responsibility and he declined to pay. I'm certain that there was no problem with the climate control when the car was brought in, and I can't say what was done to break it, but while the car was in his shop it stopped working. I hope this post saves someone else from a bad experience. read more

I was too lazy to try and change the burnt out bulb on my headlight. I tried... But, I couldn't find a way to get the bulb out since it was packed in there with no space around it. So, I decided to keep the money local. Glad I did. I brought my car I with no appointment and it looked like they were cleaning up for closing time. BUT, they took me in. I thought I'd encounter that iffy service since they looked like they wanted to go home. BUT, I chatted it up with the owner/manager, I should have bothered to get his name... I found my mechanic. I moved to Alameda in 2006. Fortunately I found AAL in 2007. At the time my 1990 Celica needed some radiator work looked at. The bozos at Ryneck Auto at marina village tried to sell me an all new radiator and wanted to do a $100 evaluation, I got a second opinion. I went to AAL for my next oil change and had them look over the car. They did the evaluation for free and said they would only charge me if there was something to fix. [honesty I need from a mechanic.] When i returned they said they hooked the car up to the pressure test and it had a loose clamp on a hose and coolant was leaking out slowly. They tightened the clamp and filled the coolant free of charge and my car magically stopped over heating! I saved over $400 with that oil change! [100eval and 300 radiator!] That same trip they noticed my fan broke free from its welding and put some plastic zip ties on it to keep it in place! Fantastic guys. In late 2007 I sold the Celica before it broke on my again. [I got it detailed by Mikes Auto Detailing in Alameda: See my other reviews] I bought a used 2003 Mazda6 which had a lowered suspension. I liked it for awhile, but decided to get the car raised. I took it to AAL for the service. The price was reasonable and it only took a a full 24hrs to finish the job. Everything was done as expected and I've been happy with the job. It's been 3 months since the service. No squeaks or hiccups. I also got a full synthetic oil change for a reasonable price. They use only Castrol oil. I also got my rear brake pads replaced and had them check the front pads. They were honest and told me I'll need new rotors up front, but the pads were only at 50% so I have about a yr until its necessary. They said the rear rotors would also need replacing next time, but the new pads would likely go about 40k miles so that's yrs from now. HONESTY. All i want from my mechanic. I would recommend these guys to my mother. read more
