So....Will avoid in future. 1) Unexpected Payment for my over due (over 60 days) retest to PASS during COVID, man was very disagreeable and legalistic - very uncooperative Mr. Steve. The registration was due but my California renewal took extra time with a residence county change of address which required back and forth letters to the DMV gods in Sacramento. Older car. All explained to Mr. Steve, however no reduction from full cost for a 5 min retest. So... will avoid this treatment. Good- there were no additional hidden or unexpected services-but this is State required by his test only licensing. 2) Called yesterday, said open no line, came over but found a long line. We agreed I would come back at 9am ( I did not ask, he did not promise I would be served first, only said "yea lets do that"). Arrived at 9am, found two others being already served (must have opened a bit early). I was put to the end of the line and it took 40 min for retest. Quite unexpected, but once again Steve threw up the "no appointments, first come first served". So...will pay the extra $9 for an appointment other place where they seemed much more regular business like - i.e. customer service. So... AVOID - best to drive over the bridge 5 min away to the $30 plus $7 cert near home depot. You know they will give this or similar treatment as is to be expected from the crazies in Oakland!! I highly recommend staying away from this place. I decided to go here based on family members good experiences. Steve's personality is very artificial. Arriving to their place of business; he will compliment your car and say all the good things you want to hear & taking care of me quickly to be on my way. During my cars inspection, he asked many unnecessary questions and started making allegations of random dangling red wires on the battery terminal and OBD area. When challenged, he pointed out he isn't a mechanic and loves hotrods. Why talk all that nonsense if you don't know what to look for? Did I mention this place charges a whopping $60. What a rip off. These guys are cool, explained as much or as little as you want. I had 2 cars checked here and it was painless. Hint: go to the website and download the coupon. Last week, I received a notice from DMV that I needed to pay the annual registration fee, and that I also needed to get a smog check on my automobile. My 2011 Honda Fit is shown in the attached photo. I did not take the photo at Alameda Smog. Instead, I took it at Joshua Tree Nat'l. Park. Yesterday, I stopped at Alameda Smog and asked when they opened in the morning. I received a quick answer, despite the fact that the manager was already busy checking the smog on three automobiles. Yesterday's mission was to travel to the Honda dealer on nearby Marina Blvd., in order to replace a flat tire. The next day (today), I returned to Alameda Smog, and I was the first in line. I was shocked (in a good way) that the entire smog check took less than 10 minutes. The smog check was performed with the engine running, but the engine was not used to drive my Honda's front wheels. I asked the manager, "Don't you need to have the car's drive wheels (the front wheels) are sitting on the rollers mounted in the floor of your garage?" The manager responded, "They stopped doing that about 20 years ago." The manager told me that my Honda had passed the smog check, and that the results were sent to DMV. Hurray ! ! ! read more

I probably should have opted to take my car elsewhere after arriving at 5:42 and being told that they were closed by the man who was smoking a cigarette and pulled his cellphone away from his ear to tell me so. I told him I thought they were open until six. He told me the machine had already been turned off, but I could come in the morning at 8:00. I canceled my first appointment and promptly brought my car in at 8:00 to be helped by this same man. My car's backup system auto brakes if something is being sensed (including really dangerous items like leaves), however, you push a button to disengage the feature. This man tells me that something must be wrong with my car because it auto braked so he had to floor it to get it to move...lord help me. Just avoid this place. read more

Immediately upon pulling up I was greeted right away by the Tech even though he was in the process of another smog he made sure to address every new customer. The Tech was very communicated and kept me informed through the whole process. If you have a 2000 or newer vehicle be sure to check out their website as they have a deal and coupon you can use. One thing I would like to add is while I was there a young kid was attempting to smog his vehicle and it was a heavily modified import car but the Tech treated him like any other customer and was very helpful in informing him what he needed to do in order to get his car smog worthy. read more

I've been here before with no problems, but I got here today at 4:45 to get a smog check and I was told I was to late because there were two cars ahead of me and they try to get the last car done by 5. Reasoning is because he has an hour of paper work....so, ya. Says open until 6, but that's a little misleading. Change your hours on yelp or write that somewhere so people don't waste their time. Been here 2 times, both times were okay. Was lucky enough not to have to wait, especially since there is very limited space. However, I referred my dad to take his 2000 Camry here. This trip caused a lot of work that shouldn't have been needed along with additional costs. The tech checked the catalytic converter and looked up the part number and said it was for a 2001 camry. If he had moved his finger up 1 inch, he would have saw that it was also listed for a 2000 camry. So now we have a tampered record in the smog system along with having to pay for this smog check. Unfortunately the tech was an older person and my dad is old too, so both of them didn't look further. But I would expect the tech not to make this simple mistake. I went ahead and retrieved the numbers from the catalytic and downloaded the Appendix D-193-107. Checked the list and the model of catalytic converter did show for 2000 and 2001. Being prepared, I started looking up parts for the camry and trying to see how the current part was incorrect. Time wasted. We decided to take it to another smog shop and it passed. So more money spent. Be careful with this shop, they have different techs. Unfortunately you would believe the smog tech knows his stuff but him messing up, can cause you to spend over a thousand getting a new catalytic converter and getting it installed. Then failing again, when you bring back the same exact model. Unless its a different tech who knows to look up the model correctly. read more
