If you live in NYC and you want to feel panicked and rushed going to see a movie go to Alamo Drafthouse. They don't let people into the theatre if you're late. even if there is a train delay. My experience was okay, but with other options in the area, I don't think that Alamo is going to be earning my loyalty. City Point, where Alamo is located, has a massive marketing campaign branding itself "Brooklyn Born." Truth is, it could be a glossy shopping mall in Cincinnati or an airport terminal Texas. It has no character. Taking escalators up past Target and Century 21 sort of kills the vibe that they try so hard to cultivate with the old time-y theater aesthetic that hits you over the head when you walk in Alamo's doors. Honestly, do yourself a favor. Get a nice meal on Court Street, catch a movie at Cobble Hill Cinemas (a family-owned establishment), and then get a beer afterward at any one of the bars on Smith Street - better food, better experience, better price, and you're supporting local, ACTUAL Brooklyn-born businesses and people. I like that Alamo Drafthouse is so strict about talking and cell phones during the movies - that's amazing, and more cinemas should follow in their example. The theaters are pretty roomy, and the chairs are super comfortable. I also like that you can select your seats when you buy your tickets. For $16 (considering a normal movie in the city will run you $14/$16), it's not a bad deal for a very pleasant atmosphere. They've been open for three months now, though, and they definitely still have kinks. They NEED to figure out how to order food supplies properly. Our server was fine, but they were out of MANY items on the menu that were sold out. Pricing is definitely weird. My friend's soda was only two dollars left than my alcoholic drink, which was odd. We were really excited about the bar, but the atmosphere was really odd. We walked in and tried to figure out if we needed to wait to be seated or what. We finally just sort of wandered in and took seats, at which point I asked a staff member if that was what we were supposed to do and he just shrugged and said "sure." The bar is also very oddly set up, with a lot of wasted space and not enough seating. They have two giant tables in the back with almost no stools, which makes no sense. The server disappeared for long stretches of time, and getting water to go with our drinks was a struggle. I think that if you go here during peak hours, you're going to spend a lot of energy trying to get drinks, and definitely won't get a seat. read more

Where has Alamo Drafthouse been all my moviegoing life? No ringing cellphones & no texting during the feature, no talking, no small children (think there are exceptions at some matinees), no showing up late, no disruptive anything, & they WILL throw you out. Plus food (giant bowls of truffle parmesan popcorn). Plus alcohol. Plus comfortable seating & good sightlines from anywhere. Plus an excellent selection of movies, some mainstream (Rogue One), some arthouse-y (documentary on the band X Japan). Before the film, you get trailers for coming attractions interspersed with highly entertaining odd bits (foreign game shows, 1950s advice for teens, ads for long-forgotten toys) -- this isn't your local multiplex showing you an eternity of promos for junk food, the next blockbuster, or, gods help us, some crap TV series. Even if they didn't have a no-lateness policy, it's worth getting there early, & this is coming from a generally tardy person. You can buy your tickets online (reasonable prices too) & choose your exact seats. So far, I've been three times & am now spoiled for most other venues ... but see below. To be honest, it's actually been two times & a bit, since on #3 my husband, on his second visit, 15 minutes into the film, chose to swallow the contents of a perfectly good steak sandwich without chewing at all (no, don't know what possessed him; yes, he was perfectly sober; consequences not dangerous but very uncomfortable) & had to be hauled off to the ER for the GI equivalent of Roto-Rooter down his esophagus & some very puzzled looks from the doctors. While he was off dramatically trying to undo the damage in the men's room, the staff ninjas there got me, our winter coats, & even our food (their idea) out smoothly & -- I really, really hope -- with minimal interruption to everyone else. They could not have been more kind & helpful, but then they have always been great under far less trying circumstances. Thank you & apologies to everyone again: y'all were heroes in a really, really idiotic situation. I'll certainly be back once the embarrassment wears off, though Mr. Bezoar may have to settle for the multiplex or turn vegetarian. (Minor caveat: like pretty much every other theatre, the sound is full blast. It's not that bad during the previews & such, but when the feature begins, the volume goes way up & you will be blown out of your seat. Bring earplugs.) read more

The staff is very friendly and eager to help without disturbing the movie. They actually add to the overall enjoyment of the movie going experience. Before I started going to the Alamo I would only go to the movies maybe twice a year. So far I've been to the Alamo 3 times in 1 month to see Hidden Figures, Not Your Negro and Beauty and the Beast. This place has justifiable potential, and overall I can see the effort being put forth. BUT, it's totally missed the mark both times I've gone. They just can't seem to figure out the timely logistics of serving food, and the communication is terrible. First time we went, put in our order before trailers even started, and then had a comical runaround for the entire movie trying to get popcorn. Server was reminded twice and then we told a manager and then were told they'd run out, and then it appeared as the credits of the END of the movie started. We were also bothered periodically by confused serves trying to deliver other orders to us, which seemed to happening all over the theater. Second time, popcorn took forever, and the shake we ordered never came. Server nowhere to be found, told someone else, waited, and then our server appeared later saying they'd run out of this shake. Also the air conditioner was on. It's March in NYC. We have snow on the ground. Period. Don't think we will return anytime soon. read more

Very nice theater with food and drink service as you watch a movie. I enjoyed the movie and had a beer so that was cool. The chairs don't recline so you are in the same position the whole time, but I guess that's standard if you want to drink, you can't recline. The theater holds around 50 people so it's not crowded with overflows since each seat is picked by the consumer. That's good so you can sit where you want. I would recommend this place as a novelty movie theater when you want to eat and drink and don't have time to go before or after the movie. read more

I went to Alamo yesterday to watch Get Out and due to train delays due to a Snowstorm I was 5-10 minutes late and although I had reserved seats along with 6 other friends for a sold out email, they turned us away at the door due to their "Late Policy". One of my friends was already in the movie waiting for us and rather than bringing in business, they said they could refund their ticket also, instead of just letting us go into the movie theatre, which for a sold out show, was very empty!! I was extremely disappointed by the way that this was dealt with because no where on the ticket did it indicate that they had a "Late Policy". I've been to Alamo many times before and never had a bad experience. Also, I bought my ticket through Fandango, so they were not able to refund the price! I watched them turn away multiple people due to this late policy, so really all it is doing is losing the company money and more importantly the wait staff, who benefit make money from tips. Instead of getting to watch a film I paid to see and was 5 minutes late to, I instead spent 25 minutes talking to the employees about how ridiculous this policy was. It was overall a very uncool experience. read more

The bartender on duty recommended several delicious beers my boyfriend loved, and she told us all about the collection. Also the music was killer, great vibe. Most fun I've ever had in a mall. Every other theater in NYC offers senior tickets on-line. I don't know why they can't get their act together and stop discriminating against seniors. You can't get in to see a movie without getting a seat in advance in their small theaters, but you end up paying full price to reserve a seat. I was looking forward to this theater opening in my neighborhood but I've only been once because I refuse to pay full price. Plus, regardless of what they say, the servers are a distraction Also, not sure if this is true in all of the theaters, but only the front row seats recline. A bit disappointed, mostly with service issues. The seats were nice and comfortable, the view was good, and the theater was clean. I went there on my birthday with my husband to see Rogue One. We got to our seats and got our orders in for beers and two food items fifteen minutes before the scheduled show time. Kind of expected to at least get our beers within ten minutes. Five minutes into the previews I inquired about our order with another server who walked by. A couple of minutes later our server came by to confirm what our order was and informed us they were out of one of the food items. So, our ticket hadn't even been put in yet. Fortunately, our food and drinks were there with another five minutes. The draft beers were fine but I got the chips with trio of salsa and about 1/2 of the bowl of chips was tiny, broken pieces too small to pick anything up with, like you'd find at the end of the bag. Just throw away the crumbs or use them in something else, but please don't serve them with salsa and charge me for them. read more

Alamo Drafthouse - Cinema Near Me - Brooklyn, New York

The Alamo Drafthouse is a true gem in Brooklyn. While I've never been to the original location in Austin, the entire experience is unparalleled to any other theater nearby. The prices for food and drink are a bit steep but the experience more than makes up for it. The seats are comfortable and the ambiance is similar to watching a movie in your own living room. The thing I like best about the theater is the selection of movies. Of course, all the critically-acclaimed, new releases are showing here but they have a lot older films that are played throughout the year, as well. I've seen two classic films within the last few months, in addition to Lady Bird and American Assassin. If you do go the food route, despite the price, it's good. Or maybe I was just starving that night? lol... Either way, I recommend the drafthouse and feel fortunate we have such a cool experience right here in our own backyard. read more

I've been to Alamo Drafthouse twice now to see movies. I had heard a lot about how great the chain is so I was excited to get one in Brooklyn. The theaters are great. The seats are super comfortable and the tables are a lot better than other dine-in theaters I have been to. Screen and sound were good too. The service and food are where the lost stars come from. The first time I saw a movie there they were running a 15% discount while they worked out the kinks. I saw a 7:15 movie and the theater was packed. The drinks and food took a little bit longer but it was busy so I wasn't too worried about it. We ordered popcorn after we finished our flatbread (which was good) and our server picked up our ticket quickly, but the popcorn never came and we were still charged for it on our bill so we had to work that out with our waitress at the end. The second movie I saw was a disaster service wise. I saw a movie around 2 pm and there weren't a lot of people in the theater. We ordered drinks and flatbread about 10 minutes before the previews started. The drinks (two colas) took nearly 45 minutes to come and the flatbread came about 5 minutes after that. Every time the server for the row behind us passed by, he would bang into the back our chairs which was pretty distracting. While eating the flatbread, we decided we wanted popcorn as well so we filled out a ticket for that and a refill on our colas. After 40 minutes, the server still hadn't come to pick up the ticket even though it was upright and could be easily seen and the theater wasn't busy. We saw the waitress coming by with the checks so we took down the ticket because at that point we figured we'd be getting the popcorn after the movie was over. But the check came about an hour before the movie was over which we thought was pretty early. The theater itself is great and the food was good, so I still think it deserves 3 stars. I will probably go back for those things and hope that service is better next time. read more

Alamo Drafthouse... Hands down best cinema on the east coast. Anyone who gives it less than 5 stars is an entitled douche that can't see a movie without texting. After suffering the substandard projection at Williamsburg Cinemas this place is a Godsend. They know how to present a film, show actual quality new releases, cult classics, rare 35mm, and the 19th century morbid wax museum is genius. Staff is on point and genuine. Best of all - use your cell phone or chat? One warning before management kicks you out with no refund. Plus no admittance once the movie starts. YES! Finally a cinema not full of inconsiderate a-holes! Go to an AMC if that's your thing. Glad to finally have a place where I can actually experience a movie minus the crap. read more

This is my first Yelp review. The entire process of ordering food while watching a movie is great in theory, but in practice is unnecessary and distracting from the cinematic experience. I didn't appreciate the lights on beneath my table and the constant movement of servers back and forth during the movie. Trying to eat anything other than popcorn is not easy in the dark, the reason why popcorn is the tried and true movie snack since forever. Alamo fails on a few other levels. The seats were uncomfortably BELOW the screen so that one has to crane their neck upwards to watch the film, uncomfortable for me since I have some neck problems and prefer to view the screen from slightly above. The seats were not comfortable, straight backs that do not hug your neck or back. Very disappointing considering even standard stadium seating is more comfortable. Perhaps the worst part was that there was a CHILD in the back row of my showing of LOGAN this evening, a RATED R MOVIE! The child was doing what children do, talking and yelling non-stop. I even complained to staff, and they DID NOTHING! Very disappointed, next time I would speak to the manager but I thought saying something to a server would make a difference. If Alamo wants to be an upscale movie-going experience, this is not the way to do so. Very disappointing on a number of fronts. read more

This place is HUGE and beautiful. Went a few days after they opened to see Moonlight. We had to wait forever to get out drink order and then our snack came halfway through the film. The server dropped off our check near the end of the film but never picked it up to run my card. We had to stay over half an hour after the movie was finished while they ran our check and weirdly they were still serving customers after the film was over and they were doing the LOUD and annoying sound check for the next showing. They were giving 30% off all food while they ironed out their service, which is kind but they obviously have a long way to go. Seems like they are understaffed and under managed. The queso was not good, the chips were stale and the soda was flat. :( All in all a poor experience in a beautiful new theatre. I hope they can iron out their service and kitchen issues. read more

I love this place. The food is excellent-- from the really fatty, bad-for-you stuff to the vegan bowls- it's all so damn tasty! I don't think I've ever had a bad or unpleasant server, either. Lately I haven't been 100 percent into the movie picks [December picks], but I'm sure that will change with the release season. I am kicking myself for not starting a campaign to make the "Black Panther" shake a menu standard. While I'm happy to see the Berber wings made the jump, that shake was a religious experience for me. Went here with my husband for the first time this past Sunday to watch La La Land. We got to our seats about 15 minutes before the movies was supposed to start, and my husband ordered a beer from our waitress straight away. He then had to remind our waitress about it, and it probably took 15 minutes in to the movie before it showed up. We then ordered a drink for me and some hot wings. The drink showed up after another 15 minutes, and it probably took an hour into the movie the hot wings showed up. They were really delicious though! We then ordered another round of drinks and a sandwich to split, the waitress came and picked up our order and then.. nothing. That second order just never showed up. It wasn't on the check that they give out by the end of the movie so I guess they must have just thrown out our order? Either way, really disappointing. read more

Great experience. Just a few warnings for future customers. If you're late you will not be allowed in. Buy your tickets from the company's website, not fandango incase an emergency comes up. Reserve your tickets ahead of time, don't bank on walk-in availability. Food is pricey, so prepare to pay "movie theater prices". When you buy your tickets through the company's website, pay attention to the small grey bars in front of the seat options, these are the tables, and if you don't plan correctly, you'll be sharing a table with a stranger. Time-square was too packed with people in the movie theater, therefore I decided to come here on Christmas to watch a movie... Best choice I ever made! I was an hour and a half early to the movie theater so I was able to sit at the waiting area nice and warm! As for the service, it was impeccable, the front desk person was friendly, and the food I ordered came out quickly, the movie started on time, and the waiter was very attentive to the needs of ALL of the people watching the movie. Just a bad idea. By the time your order is served up room temp, the lights are out and you are encouraged to consult the menu and ask for any other items by writing on a card dimly lit by puck lights under the desk cum table. Waitstaff can't seem to split checks; in our case, they ran the credit card too many times until it didn't work anymore, then asked for another. But the thing is, this place screams how it takes film seriously, and then ruins the end of the movie by attempting to collect your check with the lights out during the last 15 minutes! The whole thing is over-designed to allow a theatre to be a restaurant, or worse, a place to run up a bar tab in a dark room with plushy seats and a big screen -- and that just doesn't work. I would give this zero stars. We were excited to come here tonight for the first time and due to traffic were 5 mins late to the movie and they were unyielding in not letting us in due to their zero tolerance late policy. We have never been here before so were not aware of this policy. Even after speaking with the manager they said they have this policy (despite the fact we already paid for our assigned seats) to minimize distractions during the movie. Are you kidding me?!?!? You supposedly have waiters and waitresses delivering food and drinks all movie and you won't let us simply walk in to sit in our seats? How is one more or less distracting than the other?? The picture quality of the screen was amazing and the theater was clean. But they have a LONG ways to go to get their operation together.
