Due to many last minute flight cancellations and delays, we found ourselves in Norfolk after a 16 hour travel day. We had a four drive ahead of us, and had "booked" a car online the minute we found out we were landing in Norfolk. When we approached the desk (at 11:45pm) we were told that they had no rental cars available, and that just because we "booked" online does not mean it reserves a car for you. They offered zero resolution in regard to us being stranded in the airport with no transportation or lodging after midnight. Avoid this company to avoid getting scammed. read more

My flight was delayed from JFK to Norfolk. I called this location to confirm they will still be open, the person I spoke with said yes, they will be there until 3 AM. Rented a car from Alamo for a few days while I was in town and as soon as I got in the car it smelled like smoke. The next morning I called customer support to inform them and asked to exchange the car for one that wasn't smoked in since I couldn't take it anymore. They informed me they reached out to the location and they would be contacting me directly. No one ever did and I was stuck with a car that smelled like cigarettes for a week. To top it off I randomly received a $38 charge on my card three weeks after returning the car. No explanation nothing. I'm assuming they are trying to charge me for gas? Which doesn't make sense because it was 100% full when it arrived. Makes no sense. Just seems shady. And they obviously can't get their customer relations together. Booked a full-size car at ORF thru Costco. At checkin (thru Enterprise) I was told they didn't have any full size cars so the agent tried hard to upgrade me for another $20/day. I demurred and said I expected to be given one class higher for the same rate; that's always been my expectation and experience and I've been renting cars since the early 1970s. The agent gave me a Nissan Kicks assuring me this WAS an upgrade from a full-size car. As I was scheduled for a COVID vaccination I didn't have time to waste. The Kicks turned out to be a SUBCOMPACT vehicle. It smelled like it had been soaked in cheap fabric cleaner. I'll have plenty of time at checkin to strap this on with the counter folks. Bait n switch scam going on. Rented car on Priceline for $62/day got to airport they insisted we had to be downgraded because the car was in the garage and needed 24 hours notice to book. When I asked about refunding the rate difference( we booked Audi luxury they wanted to give us a toyota) they said no they can modify. Since bad weather was expected we said maybe we can cancel and book the low tier model and they said they had no cars left except the toyota. We said ok just check us out, he gave us a price $200 higher! So downgrade and more expensive! Then he tells us the insurance we purchased wasn't insurance and we had to pay an additional 29.99 per day. This was a 3 day rental that cost almost $400! Then we went down and was told to meet the guy at the Enterprise desk. We didn't book with Enterprise! The rep asked how our experience was, we explained we were not happy about being downgraded and overcharged. I told him I will call to file a complaint he then said oh do you want the Audi? We were shocked! Since we were told it wasn't even on site. He hurried to give us the keys when we got to the car the windows were down, looked like someone was just driving it. I would give zero stars if I could. Landed after a long 7 hour flight with an impatient four year old to be told they're sold out and I have to wait at least an hour. Fast forward an hour in a half...still waiting and no car. Not to mention that the other 8 Rental Car companies in the airport have zero Cars available as well. End result- waited Over 2.5 hours to be shuttled in a van with ten others to a parking lot where we were given cars. I returned home after a 7 month deployment. I rented a 2018 Ford Fusion to get me from Norfolk airpot to Washington Regan. The car was a white and it was raining pretty hard outside. I only had the car for less than 5 hours. There was prior damage to the car that I missed. I returned the car to Washington Regan. Everything was terrific. Until I received a bill for $1,300 worth of damage. The damage was on the rear passenger wheel mount. I told them there is no way that I could've caused that damage. All I did was drive straight north on I-95 for 4 hours I didn't even stop for gas. I understand that I signed the vehicle had no prior damage but I was excited to return home from a long deployment. If you plan on renting with Alamo be sure to do a thorough walkthrough. read more

Made reservations 3 weeks in advance as I was traveling to attend a graduation ceremony. When we checked in at the counter, we were informed they had overbooked and were made to wait until cars became available. The waiting list exceeded 5 people, and it didn't matter that we had a reservation, it was first come first served. After 2 hours of waiting, we gave up and paid extra money at another rental company. I was drawn to this company for the cheap price, but I learned that sometimes your time is more valuable. In this case, I lost both, time and money. Overall, this place is extremely mismanaged. No point in making a reservation other than to guarantee them your money whether you get the vehicle from there or not. I do not recommend renting a vehicle from here. Giving 1 star because 0 star is not an option. read more

By far the worst treatment myself or my family has ever gotten from any company period. We had a reservation booked. Called about 4-5 days ahead to explain that we will be flying in on a military flight and there is no set schedule. Our flight schedule says we could land as late as 3am. They rep on the phone said it was no problem and that we could pick the car up at any time. Great. Assumed notes were made. We also reserved the largest possible vehicle because we had 6 luggage bags and two dogs (moving from overseas). After traveling for 16+ hours we came to the airport via taxi from the military base close by to find no one there and no help. Other customers were waiting as well who eventually went with other companies who were still open (1:30am). We had to wait on the base in between a doorway because we had no where to go due to not having picked up the car. We came to the Norfolk Airport at 7am the next morning. We were explaining again the situation to the person at the counter. We were being blamed by the staff member that our "flight was late" despite telling him multiple times we have no control or much knowledge of the flight schedule until it actually happens and we called ahead to inform the company. He offered us a slightly smaller vehicle which was fine but we were still being charged for the previous day with no budging. And we got a $20 "discount". Which meant we were still paying the same rate we were going to pay anyway ($623 down to ~$600). We asked to speak to a supervisor but he lied and said she was not there yet and maybe she would arrive between 30mins and 1 hour. We were going back and forth (no name calling or cursing) talking in a normal voice in an empty terminal and he says "babe, I mean mam, this is all I can do for you". I said "there must be something that can be done. This treatment is not acceptable and we should not pay for the previous day, etc etc". The supervisor who was apparently not there yet, stormed out of the door that was 3ft away, snatched the rental agreement from my husband's hands and said "I'm not going to listen to you yell at my employee this rental is cancelled". So she cancelled our agreement, refused to rent to us and we were yet again stranded by this company. They didn't care what happened to us and did not want to help at all. I heard her later talking on the phone to someone that they had 23 cars going out at 10 and another 12-15 or something like that going out at 11. They don't care. They are making their money and don't want to help you or hear you. So I am wondering if it is company policy to whisper at employees instead ??? We went with Avis and they helped us immediately. Alamo has made our overseas move a living nightmare due to this situation. Glad to know this is one company that does not care about active duty military. read more

Would give zero stars but isn't an option so 1 will have to do. I reserved my vehicle through Costco Travel in advance. The reservation was confirmed by Alamo via an email sent to me. Upon arrival, February 11th 2019, I handed over my ID and Major credit card, VISA. **I do not rent cars with debit cards. Kyle at the desk I put my valid and current ID, and credit card. He then said, "sorry we can not rent to you." When I asked why, he stated, " I have no idea. We run your ID through our new system and you were not approved." He then said he would get his manager. George, the manager arrived several minutes later. I was then on the phone with Alamo customer service and was escalated to level 2 because I am NOT on a "do not rent list." ( it has been confirmed 6 times that I am not on any list by ALAMO representatives) The level 2 agent was baffled and new nothing about what "new system" he was talking about. The manager offers that if I had a return ticket he might be able to "push it through." ??? I read the contract front to back and it states clearly that a return ticket is ONLY NECESSARY when renting with a debit card. I was using a major credit card. ( chase Visa) George offered no other explanation although I told him several times I needed to know why my rental was being denied. He then told me no other company would rent to me in that airport either. I contacted Costco Travel, after each of the 3 Alamo agents could not understand it and were not able to reach anyone at the branch. Costco travel representative held with Alamo for over a half hour and was eventually hung up on by Alamo escalation. Costco Travel agent then made a new reservation for me with Budget. He stayed on the line with me as I easily completed the rental with the same ID and C.card I had just given to Kyle and George at Alamo. Something is wrong with a system that denies rentals giving no basis. I have filed a complaint with Alamo and was told I would hear from them within a week. It is now Feb.21st. 10 days later and no word from Alamo. I suspect they are busy with upset customers just like me who have been denied for no reason. What a joke. Oddly, I had just flown in to Norfolk and my ID and flight info surely passed TSA requirements so, I can fly on a plane but not rent a car?? This makes no sense. If I had to guess, I would guess that Alamo did not want to honor my reservation because I had purchased through Costco, at a discounted rate because there is no other reason at all. I have a clean background with no criminal charges in my life, ever. I am an upstanding human and I was given no reasoning at all. To date no one from Alamo has stepped forward to remedy this situation and no one that I have spoken with at Alamo's own customer care escalation team has any idea why this happened. That speaks volumes. I have spent over 6 hours on the phone with Alamo representatives and have all calls recorded because, their hold info states that they will "record my calls for training purposes." I guess if they can, I can also. Evidently they need training so I hope they listen to the 6 hrs worth of my calls and see that their own customer care can not understand Norfolk Virgina's odd practice of denying rentals to people with prior reservations without any explanation. read more

I love Alamo and I love almost every location I've ever been to. This location had a wonderful desk, and pick up. Drop off was hell. Our flight was at 6 am and we arrived at 4:30. The return lot is outside the main parking. It was hard to find and GPS directions are incorrect. It took 1 and 1/2 trips around to find the lot. The return lot was over flowing and there was NO ATTENDENT! You just park where ever if you lanes are full. They dont open till 6. You drop you key in a drop box and hope all goes well. Then you drag your 3 suit cases 1/8 to 1/4 of a mile to the departures drop off sidewalk, only to find Southwest isn't at the departures on this side of the airport. You need to drag you stuff through the airport and search for Southwest on the otherside. An ATTENDENT is needed or at least better signage! read more

Thank goodness there were other rental desks still open but I ended up paying $271 since I didn't have a reservation. My reservation with Alamo was $140, I am so MAD that I had to pay double!! The sad thing is that I could have made reservation with a different company for $120 but chose Alamo since they are suppose to be open til 1AM, in case my flight was delayed. ++From this experience I learned that I need to reserve at two different rental companies just in case one is closed or if they don't have a car available. read more

Watch yourself and carefully listen to the agents here. The rental check-in was painless and quick, which was nice. However, as the agent was rapidly reading the terms, he tried to sneak in basic insurance onto my reservation. It sounded more or less like: "I have you in a Chevy Cruze, unlimited miles, you have chosen to return the car with gas yourself, **basic insurance**, and returning on Sunday at 6:30AM. Just sign here and you're all set." Luckily, I travel enough to know basic insurance is extra and not included in my rental agreement. So I had him go over the terms again and stopped him when he attempted to pass over the insurance. When I asked if that was free with Alamo, he said no and that it would be extra....$15/day extra! I politely declined but now I know to be careful at this location. This was the first time I've had an agent try and sneak in daily insurance and it bothered me enough that it has me considering the other rental agencies for the next trip into Norfolk. The car itself was practically brand new and was located on the bottom floor, which was convenient. But since all the rental cars are located in the same garage location, I have no need to stick to Alamo just because of convenience. read more

If it were not my car smelling as if someone right next to me was smoking, my experience would of been far better. The smell of cigarettes so was bad I had to buy an air freshener and use Lysol wipes in a attempt to rid the smell. While this helped, it still was not enough. In addition, the interior was not as clean as i would have hope for. I will say that I was pleased with the staff. Only giving one star because ZERO was not an option. While driving our Alamo rental car late at night, we struck an object in the road that we initially thought had caused no damage. But in the morning we determined that it was damaged--maybe too damaged to finish our journey of over 600 miles. (We were on a highway bridge over the Atlantic Ocean that had signs posted stating "NO STOPPING." But we did stop momentarily to inspect for damage.) I called Alamo Roadside Assistance around 9 am to request help, was promised a replacement vehicle would be brought go me, but we would have to wait until after 1 p.m. when the local facility was due to received some returns that would meet our needs. When no one called back as promised, I called again around 1:30 and found out that the local facility CLOSED at 1:00. But Alamo was still supposed to bring us a replacement and take away the damaged car. Tow truck was due to arrive at 4:25 p.m. No tow truck arrived, so I called again around 5:30 and was again told that a replacement would be brought. The final tow truck arrived around 9 p.m. but with the stipulation that I had to accompany the tow truck to the Norfolk Airport (80 miles away) to receive the replacement which "Liz" at Norfolk Airport refused to release under any other conditions. It required that I drive the replacement vehicle back 80 miles, in the dark, in the rain, across unfamiliar territory. The tow truck driver was nice enough, but he was not told the address of the hotel where I was at; he had to call me to ask. Nor was he told that he was to tow the damaged car to Norfolk Airport. And none of us (my wife rode with us) knew where to drop the car once we got there because no one at the Norfolk Airport's Alamo facility was available to answer the phone. My visit to my family reunion was ruined because I had to babysit my phone waiting for return calls that never came and promised service that was chaotic at best. We survived the ordeal, but concluded that Alamo's POOR CONTINUUM OF CARE makes us want to NEVER USE ALAMO AGAIN! I wonder--like an earlier writer--if ALAMO's service was slipshod because we rented through Hotwire, a discount travel site. read more

I made a reservation weeks in advance only to be told that I could not take the car because the address on my (valid) drivers license was not current. While I can accept that this might be Alamo's policy for rentals, this should be clearly stated at the time reservations were made. Moreover, no attempt was made to help me find an alternative rental, and the staff were completely unsympathetic and unhelpful. Made a (paid) reservation for a mini-van 2 months before my trip, and so I thought picking up the van after my flight would be a breeze. I was wrong. I landed in Norfolk and have now been waiting for over an hour on a vehicle that I had reserved 2 months prior. I received an email from Southwest that our flight arrival to Norfolk was going to be delayed until 1:30 am. I checked Alamo's website, which showed that this location closes at 1:00 am, so I called Alamo to make sure they had our flight details and requested a call back to confirm that someone would be available. No call back. No one there at 1:30. Completely closed. A sign at their desk referred customers to National. It was closed too. Hertz, which officially closed at 12:30, had a representative waiting for arrivals from our flight. Not so Alamo (or National). Thanks for nothing. Never again. read more

First, I would like to say that I had GREAT customer service when I picked up my rental. I just needed to drive from NYC back to Norfolk, Virginia because I had to drive down a few boxes. I had the car for less than 24 hours before I returned it to the Norfolk International Airport. The attendant at Norfolk International Airport gave me a "receipt" when I returned the rental, which turned out to be a fraud. But then almost month later I get charged for a whole week instead of a day AND I get charged for a toll the day AFTER I returned the car. Since I borrowed and dropped off at different locations, each location is blaming the other and requesting I call the other branch. Even customer service keeps redirecting my call. I keep on getting the run around. So what was quoted to be $64 plus tolls turned out to be $370 + $65 + tolls. And I'll probably never get that back. So be aware when you get a rental. Ask for receipts. And triple verify the information. read more

Highly disappointed. I made a reservation to pick up a rental with Alamo at 12:45 am on Dec 26th. Since they close at 1am I called to confirm that they would be there because I will be pushing it close to their closing time. They ensure me that they usually wait 10-15 min if I provided my flight information when I reserved my car, I did. My plane lands at 12:30, I am happy because I have plenty of time to make it. I find myself along with 5 other customers standing at an empty counter at 12:45. An employee at another rental counter informed us that they had already left. Sadly he did not have any rentals available. How so when you have several reservations and it is not even closing time. After speaking with the other customers I learned that they had reservations also, some had also confirmed and others had trouble getting someone to answer the telephone. Coming in from CA after midnight with 2 young kids, expecting to pick up a rental and not really destroyed my mood, my pockets and my plans. Alamo left 5 families stranded, I wasn't the only customer with small children. We all had to find an alternate solution (a taxi) to VA Beach and Portsmouth. Alamo this is poor customer service, I will be calling to cancel my reservation and I expect not to be charged. I will never rent from you again and will encourage others not to also. Closing prior to 1am was unacceptable and unprofessional especially when you had reservations. If your employees felt the plane wasn't going to make it shame on them, because closing time is just that, closing time. read more
