Would provide a zero star rating if I could! Never renting with Avis again! I typically rent with Enterprise but only rented with them because it was a bit cheaper and my credit card offered a special "preferred" membership to Avis but it wasn't worth it at all. When I got to the counter the First Gentlemen who helped me was friendly and nice, but directed me to the outside kiosk because I was a "preferred member" and didn't need to wait (even though we had already waited 10-15 minutes). The lady at this kiosk counter was a lot less pleasant and condescending in her communication with us but I've worked in customer service so just brushed it off as her having a bad day. But definitely didn't feel like a "preferred member" in that transaction. We rented the car for 2 weeks for a road trip. I rent cars often, both in the area and when I travel which is fairly often, but have never had an experience returning my car and being charged an obscene amount of money for them to vacuum the car after use. They charged me $250 for "excessive cleaning fees" for a little bit of dirt in the car. I've rented from competitors such as Enterprise and went on camping trips that actually elicited having a lot of dirt in the car from all our gear and was never charged an excessive cleaning fee ever! I called customer service and they were able to reduce the charge by $125. This is better than nothing but I honestly could've gone to the local car wash and vacuumed it for less than $2.00! What a scam. I looked online under reviews and general searches about Avis and Oakland airport Avis came up quite a lot with similar "excessive cleaning" charge claims. They should really be suggested to the better business bureau at this point. Point blank never using this company again or their partners (budget, Payless, etc). This is a terrible company and I will continue to go to Enterpise for all my car rental needs. 0/100 will not recommend to anyone I know. read more

Anyhow, I opted for the "suppliers choice "car, as usually car rental companies will list a few cars is an option and you will get to choose between one or two of their cars. But when the woman didn't even mention the type of vehicle I chose it should have been a red flag.... Long story short, she gave me the worst car on the lot!! They had PLENTY of vehicles available --in fact, their car lot was completely FULL! But, no.... she had to give me the crappies car not sure what her motivation was here... Seemed pretty spiteful to me... I almost went right back inside and asked to change cars, but by that point I was running late for appointments on my schedule. They should stop the practice of bait and switch. I ordered a VW Jetta specifically for the smart cruise control and lane assistance. They didn't have the car available. The counterperson (bored and condescending) booked me a Nissan Altima instead. I *specifically* asked about the cruise control (was it intelligent or adaptive or smart) and lane assistance. The counterperson said, well, the Nissan *was* a 2025. Bythe time I realized that the car did not have the safety equipment, I was on the road (from Corpus Christ to San Francisco). My trip was a lot more difficult than it should have been. I returned the car early, but Avis doesn't refund the difference. Apparently, that is part of the small print in the rental agreement. Maybe it is, but it is so shady and unprofessional. They made $100+ off me, and lost a customer. I will never, ever use Avis again. I would give zero stars if I could. Before you rent please read this. So I booked a car 5 days in advance through American Express Travel. When I arrived on the day I needed the car, I was told we have no cars. Delivered with ZERO EMPATHY OR CONSIDERATION by a 20-something staring into his phone when I got there. I asked what I was supposed to do, and he handed me a phone number and said, " Call this location. I said, "Why don't you call?" He said, "We don't do that." I said, "Why didn't you call me?" He said, "We don't have your number." The number was available had they called Avis. They made no attempt to do anything. He then said I had insulted him and that I was trespassing. You wait outside, I asked him for his name, but he refused. After I went outside, he locked the door and called the "manager". I went outside and called an Uber. Some 15 min later, another gentleman showed up, and guess what, the exact same thing happened. So I asked that guy about how he was treated with the same routine, no help, no empathy, no customer service. About 10 minutes later, it's 10 degrees outside, so yes, I was cold. The "manager," another 20-something, showed up. I said you need to talk to both of us. After about 10 minutes, he came out and said I told the employee I would "take him outside," which was a total lie. I am a retired law enforcement officer; I know better. The "manager told me I could not stand in the parking lot, I had to stand in the street. I'll never be back and never use Avais again. So the Uber drove me to the Enterprise about 5 minutes away. They had a car were very nice and I was on my way. After I returned, I was driven home by one of their drivers. He told me horror stories about that place and that the employees would give him the finger if he picked people up from there in the same situation. DO NOT RENT A CAR HERE read more

Very disappointed with Avis at Oakland airport. We received an email saying we could get rapid pick up without standing in line. We followed the link and it was to Clear where you have to pay $189 per year. We called to see if they give you a discount or pay Clear like Amex does but could not get an answer. We showed up at 2:40 PM for our 3 PM pickup and did not get to the front of the line until 3:40 PM. Almost an hour wait with no compensation. Yet when we drove up at 4:10 PM, about 20 minutes late they charged us $53 for one hour. Because of the delay, we missed an event we paid for in Yountville but do they care, I don't think so. We rent a lot from another enterprising [see what I did there :) ] car rental place and they do things so differently. Because my wife put in the rental in her name I could not put the car in my credit card, which is what I typically do. May try Avis again but if the situation is similar, we may be going back to another rental company. I hope we can fix this situation, we'll see! read more

I rented an suv at the Tulsa airport June 11 - June 13 2025. I had to go to muskogee for legal matters. That part of oklahoma,as anyone living there knows,sudden heavy rainfall is common. I did also pick up a pet,that was in a carrier the whole 1.5 hrs to the airport. I told the girl at drop-off I got mud on the floor mat passenger side. Not the carpet,the floor mat. There was mud splatter outside the car. As I said several sudden heavy rainfall. When I read the contract​ to say excessive. I can't see any of that as excessive. Representatives that day were aloof and impatient with our questions and failed to fulfill their job as customer service representatives. We asked about pricing and toll coverage etc and he was quick to point us to the website instead of summarizing it for us. Fast forward to today, Ive been back and forth with them regarding my drivers license that Im assuming fell in the rental. Not only did I make the report, went to their location, and checked in about any follow up to no avail. No one called back and I find out today they erased my report without follow up. Absolutely awful drop-off experience at Oakland Airport Avis. I've been an Avis Preferred member for over 25 years, but after this recent experience, I'm seriously rethinking ever renting from Avis again. I pulled into an open return lane -- which was empty -- only to be met with immediate hostility from the return attendant. Instead of a simple request to move to a different lane, she threw her arms up and snapped, "Didn't you see all of the cars on the other side? Why did you pull in here?" I offered to move the vehicle myself to avoid any issues, but she insisted on doing it herself while continuing to be rude and dismissive. When I asked why I was getting so much attitude, she doubled down and gave me even more grief. I then politely asked for her name, and she refused to give it. Only after asking multiple times did she finally say "Tina." This is not how loyal, long-time customers should be treated. I've never experienced anything like this in all my years of renting cars. They are running a car detail fee scam. My wife I went to the beach so we did have some sand on our feet which did get on the floor mats. When I returned the car the agent said all was good but two weeks later I got a letter in the mail saying I am being charged $125 for extra cleaning. I can only reach an overseas customer service line, who are nice but have no authority to make a common sense decision. I have called 5 times and emailed twice and nobody will give me a number or call me bfrom the airport location. Beware of false fuel charges at this location. I fueled up on my way to the drop off and the tank was full. My receipt shows 8/8 fuel which is a full tank. Then they charged me 18.99 for a fuel service fee. This happens from time to time and I know that from my experience as a President's Club Avis member. You can call customer service and get the fee credited but you'll need the address of the gas station, the amount of gas in gallons and the cost. Make sure you get a printed receipt whenever possible so you can avoid this scam. read more

I rented a car from Avis, which I picked up via Budget at the Austin TX airport. The car windshields were dirty inside and out, and there was pet slobber on the back windows. I was in a hurry, so I didn't complain. When I left my motel the next morning I noticed there was dog hair on the back seat, but I didn't care because I was picking up my son and his dog. I covered the back seat with a blanket for our non-shedding Bordoodle and we started driving. I returned the car at the Oakland CA airport. Today, I received an email from Budget saying "Dear Avis Customer" you owe us $250 for cleaning the car. I called them and they refused to delete the bill saying the car had dog hair in it. Their website says pets are allowed, the car was already dirty, and even if it the dog hairs WERE my fault how does it cost $250 to clean a car?!?! I will never use either of these companies again. Buyer beware. I've rented cars for over 20 years and recently did a pickup in Sacramento and drop off in Oakland with Avis. I was very disappointed with their dishonest dealings and customer service. I drove the car through rain, it is the Bay Area, and Avis charged me $450 to clean the car, stating that it was excessively dirty. I reached out to their customer service over email and the phone but they stood by the assessment that the rain debris constituted the need for excessive cleaning. It took them one week to respond to a message and we went back and forth for about four weeks; ultimately they stopped responding. Luckily, I paid with my AMEX until, wait for it, the AMEX coverage does not cover cleaning fees/charges that don't involve a collision. So then I disputed the charge with AMEX but Avis came back saying that the charge was valid. My hands are tied and there's nothing I can do other than warn other consumers to go with another rental agency. read more

My husband went to talk to them and instead of giving him options (like cancel current rental and do a walk-in rental instead), they told him too bad, bye bye. My wife and I rented an SUV to go from the Bay Area to Tahoe for the weekend. It wasn't until we were already driving up on the Friday night that we realized the car didn't have working A/C. In the evening that wasn't an issue but during the weekend up in Tahoe and especially on the ride back down passing through over 100 degree heat in Vallejo & Fairfield, that was pretty unbearable. There were AVIS locations up in Tahoe but since it was a busy holiday weekend there wasn't any cars available for us to switch out to. The car drove fine otherwise but actually the main reason we rented was because our current car didn't have working A/C. When we returned the car in Oakland, the manager shaved a day's price off our rental total which was nice, but I think we much would've prefered the A/C. A/C seems like a basic feature these days. Some would suggest we should've tested everything before we left, but besides looking for dents and adjusting mirrors, that's probably something folks don't check and I'd argue it's up to the rental car companies when they inspect and do maintenance on their cars. read more
