1-Star Review - Fox Rent A Car (Oakland location and corporate) My experience with Fox Rent A Car was so negligent and disrespectful that I feel obligated to warn others. I rented a car from the Oakland location, and from the very start the customer service was unprofessional and dismissive. The staff was rude, condescending, and made me feel like a burden for simply asking questions about my rental. The car I was given smelled strongly of cigarette smoke, which I reported -- only to be met with sarcastic remarks instead of help. Eventually, they gave me a replacement. A few days into the rental, the car started leaking gas. I contacted roadside assistance and was first told to go to the Burbank location -- only to be called back and told there were "no available vehicles" due to their fleet being "upside down." Then I was falsely told by a rep Adam (citing the general manager -Madeline,) that the gas leak must have been my fault, despite there being no inspection, no accident, and no impact. Even worse, I was told to return the car with a full tank of gas -- while it was leaking fuel. I asked to swap the car closer to where I was, and they tried to send me to Ontario, in the opposite direction of where I live (Oakland), causing me to be over 2.5 hours late for an appointment. I was finally allowed to switch the car at LAX after pushing back. Now, Fox is trying to charge me over $2,200 for damage I did not cause, with no real evidence, no proof, and no follow-up to the complaint I submitted weeks ago. To make matters worse, I have photos of the undercarriage which shows that I did not puncture the car. This company does not care about customer safety, misleads people into driving unsafe vehicles, and uses intimidation tactics to avoid responsibility for their own poorly maintained fleet. Rented this car to head to South Dakota, I was a bit scared of all the negative reviews so I was a bit extra cautious prior and day of picking up the rental. Because we were going on a 7-10 day trip we needed to make sure the vehicle was a 4Runner or similar in size to fit everything. The phone number gets you no where, so I went in person and the attendant assured me we would receive a 4Runner if not a Jeep model. Day of- I recorded a video of the vehicle at pick up and notified the attendant of any scratches or marks on the car prior to leaving the lot. Super quick, no hassle whatsoever. Car had a full tank of gas and was very clean. During- The car was wonderful, held up very well for the long drive and thankfully as we got closer to South Dakota the gas became cheaper! Returning- We made sure the car was washed and clean of any belongings or snacks from the road. Had no issue with drop off and did not have any "fees" added afterwards. read more

Fox is tempting because it's so cheap, but be warned. When we arrived at the rental car center, every other rental company line was short, except Fox. The Fox line was about 15 people deep and it took a solid 10 minutes to help each person. When we got to the front, our car wasn't even ready. We had made the reservation for pick up at 9am and it was 10:15am at this point, but they said we'd have to wait 15-20 minutes more. The agent called the manager on the lot and they said that it would be ready by the time we got out there so not sure what the mix up was. The car itself was great and the process to pull it out was quick. What is weird is that I got a charge for $1.46 on my card after the fact. Be forewarned: Fox takes full advantage of their customers and you can never speak to someone and never get your money back. I have rented a few times this year From Fox and a couple of times in prior years. I have never had an issue with the cars or the people at the counter. I have had a dispute on the billing twice and both were automatically denied. The first time I made a mistake when booking online. I called and could not make any corrections before renting the car and at the counter they just charged me more. When I called booking, they declined my request. This last time I rented, there was a significant amount of $430 in coverages which I had denied when making the rental online AND which I denied verbally at the counter. The counter person mistakenly (I think) selected that I approved every coverage, which I did not. I did not realize that when I signed, the counterperson make the wrong computer selection. I called billing, and I was not allowed to speak to a supervisor. I was told that a supervisor would call me back, but they did not. I went online and requested a review but never got a response. I had the charges reversed on my credit card, but Fox was able to recharge. I have never had an issue with the cars or the people at the counter before. The Oakland Airport location is now closed, so there is no manager to speak to. Three months later I am still trying to speak to someone who can address my issue. read more

I was very much shocked to see these low ratings from many as I had nothing but good things to say about this car rental company from reserving a vehicle on one of the travel sites to getting there in the airport shuttle to checking in with them once we got to the check in counter to picking up the car and drive away from the lot and returning it at the end of the trip. When I reserved it, the type of car was specified as Jeep Grand Cherokee. When we got there, the lady said she'd give us Wrangler Rubicon which was quite shocking to us (in a way, it was a better option.) The whole check in process was about 10 minutes. The check in lady's eloquent speech and responses to my questions didn't have ANY gray area in any way; her transparency was everywhere in what she said. No hidden charges, no nothing. Walking to the lot where our car was located was only a short walk from the check in counter. The guy at the lot was also kind and above and beyond. He walked us through the process to ensure that we weren't left with any issues and/or questions. Upon completion of our trip, we came back to the same lot. There was a different attendant then but this lady was also pleasant to us and didn't give us any trouble. Since I bought a full tank of gas from Fox upon checking in (at a cheaper rate than major gas stations in the vicinity) I was able to return it with only 1/5 of gas left in it. And of course, there was no issue with that upon dropping it off. The whole Oakland Airport is so clean and this car rental facility is simply an extension of it when it comes to its cleanliness (even though the facility is at least several miles away from the airport.) Horrible Experience. I booked with anticipation. When I arrived they said they didn't have the car. I paid 500 dollars security deposit with my card. Since my dad was driving his name was on the lease. I only got partial refund back, and the rest was deposited in my dad's account, who does not live in the country. I called to have them refund ME, the person who paid for the car, the security deposit. They said there was nothing they could do because they needed my dad to call them. My dad doesn't live in my country, cannot call them, and can't wire me the money because his bank does not allow for that. I rarely write reviews but have to write this so other people do not experience what I experienced. The worker told me to add the plate pass (fastrak) for 13.5 a day because I told him I am going to drive to Napa and then to SF. He lied stating that the plate pass is cheaper because I will get tolled 10 bucks each way I ride the bridge. I find out later that its only 8 dollars and that you only get charged one way. Next he sold me the pre paid gas which they charge $80. He told me that whatever leftover gas there is, I will get reimbursement. He lied again because I later find out that you only get reimbursement if it is at 50% or 75%. I had about 45% when returning the car which sucked because if i knew the truth I would have gone to a gas station and spend $5-$15 to get it to 50%. So I didn't get any refund back on the $80. Everyone that was there had to wait for their car to get ready. He told us 20 mins but it took over an hour in which he called me back and said he is going to upgrade us since we were waiting so long. After the trip, I ended up calling billing department and after explaining everything, she told me that she can't do anything because I signed the documents. The problem with the documents are there are no documents. The worker tells you lies to have you do a bunch of ad ons and then you just sign electronically on a small device. So why did she even ask what all my issues were if she was going to tell me she can't do anything because I signed it??? Such a waste of time. Not worth it. Do yourself a favor. Go to any other car rental company. Stay away from them. They have a horrible business and even a worst customer service. read more

Excellent customer service from CHARNIKA. She was great and patient nice lady! CHARNIKA made the transaction very smooth and able to get me a car cause I came an hour early. She took care of me and helped me try to save money and gave me a lot of information about the tolls. Thank you so much CHARNIKA!! The Jeep Cherokee was amazing driving car and handled the rain road well! It's super big and very roomy. It made me thinking of trading my car for the Jeep. SUPER CLEAN! It looked brand new inside and outside. Patricia was super nice and patient as well! I came to drop it off at 6am in the morning. She was opening up and fill out the paperwork for my car transaction to be finished. It was very fast and smooth transaction. No hidden fees and I did get the receipt through email. I had my rental July 4 to 7 my flight was delayed and I called their agent and they said the person would be there till 1230 am (my flight arrived finally at 1150pm) THEY DID NOT WAIT. I would give a zero star if I could. Recently I booked a pre-paid FOX rental car from Expedia for two week at Oakland airport. The agent at FOX Oakland airport desk asked me where I was going. I said I would go to Berkeley direction. That agent falsely told me that I need to pass a bridge and I need a Platepass put on my car in order to get thru the bridge because no one at the booth to collect toll. I specifically asked him whether there was any fee or charges with it. He said no fees. He said when I went through the bridge, I would be charged $13. I asked if it was one way only or both ways. He said I would be charged both ways. But the truth of the fact is there is no bridge at all from Oakland airport to Berkeley. Also this Platepass charges $17.62 per day. The agent told me there was a $300 deposit for having it. If I did not use it, I would get it back. Because I repaid the rental, so I didn't check my receipt closely. I found it out after I saw only $60 was returned to my card. So I called FOX customer service. I was told there was a daily charge for having Platepass. It was not acceptable with such deceptive practice. The agent not only did not tell me there was a daily charge for having the device, but also told me there were no fees for having it. I had a great experience renting with Fox Rent A Car (through Priceline). No surprise fees, Priceline quoted about $100 for 3 days, and I added the $12/day insurance and that was all I paid with taxes and fees. At the counter there were 4 customers in line, I waited about 15min, and then spent about 5 min listening to the clerk telling me about the terms and conditions and then I was on my way! The return was just as seamless. Just showed up, unloaded the car while the person inspected the car and then I was on my way to the airport! I think the only "downside" which really isn't a downside is the walk from the counter to the car, because I was alone with my toddler, our bags and a car seat, so my recommendation to them would be to have some luggage cart available to use. 5/5, definitely recommend, will use them again next time I'm in the Bay Area read more

I like that there's an option of them filling up half tank instead of full if you aren't going to do a lot of long distance driving. Their gas price was definitely an actual competitive rate. I rented a Hyundai Accent for 2 days on Monday-Tuesday (2/28-3/1/22) thinking my final price would be equivalent to the Priceline price. However it came out to be more than double amount ($270!!) than the Priceline price ($110). This was absolutely absurd and thought it was mistake. So I called the fox rent a car corporate and they told me everything was charged correctly. Later on, I found out that they charged me their insurance when the front desk person never mentioned a single word about it. And also, they charged me prepaid fuel for a FULL tank when I only used 1/3rd of it. The rental car was in okay condition but had a bad cigarette smell (maybe they had a hard time getting rid of it). Inside the car was fairly clean. The car did its job. Anyhow, when I expected $110 for two days rental but ended up paying $270, I will never return to this company in the future. So shame I was charged so much for renting a small compact car, Hyundai Accent.
