I recently purchased my first Cartier with Alan after much internal debate over which vendor to use for the purchase. Although Alan is not the cheapest option, the premium one pays over say Jomashop or eBay is worth every penny. The Customer service was exceptional. I first spoke with Sergio who explained why the price was slightly higher than competitors (full papers). I decided to order the watch and Sergio emailed me and soon called me back to ensure every detail of the order was correct. He was completely candid about the time it would take to procure the watch and apologized for what ultimately was a 2 day wait; which he had disclosed when I first inquired about the watch. When the watch arrived at their shop, Alan called me and helped arrange for shipping to a local FEDEX so that I wouldn't have to wait at home to sign for the watch. Alan also called when my bank failed to give him proper notice of the wire transfer and helped me sort it out so that the watch could be expedited to me. I read that Alan Furman provides great deals on watches but their service leaves much to be desired. That was our experience. I inquired about a 20K Rolex. We spoke with a gentleman who may or may not have been Alan. He was friendly and told us he could ship the watch to us in 2 days. Told him we wanted to check on thing and call him back. We call back ready to purchase the watch minutes later. A female answers and says he is not available. We give them our number and was supposed to call us back that day or the next. Never heard from them again After this experience, it confirmed my belief in you get what you pay for. As a result, I decided to go with a local authorized dealer in my city. I recognized that even though I would pay more money, I will receive that level of service that is afforded to patrons who will pay that much for a watch. read more

So here is the deal. His prices are good. Better than most. He's not an "authorized" dealer so he keeps prices lower to compete. But they lack in customer service and etiquette and that experience that one expects from a retailer when purchasing a $40,000 item!! I mean I get a warmer feeling and more of a thankful sincere appreciation when purchasing a $100 tie from Bloomingdales than a $40k watch from these guys. I'd give them 4 stars for price but id give them 2 stars for their lack of understanding of how to treat and cater to the luxury watch shopper. They need to learn this from places like Ritz Carlton or Bloomingdales or frankly any grateful appreciative store owner. read more

After signing in, we waited for only a few minutes before a technician came out. Misleading. I have a vintage Rolex that needed servicing and cleaning. I have had it for years and it has been a useful and enjoyable watch. I called A Furman in advance, and was referred to Darrell Whipple, who told me that they do all their repair in-house and that they could easily handle this. So I sent them my watch and about a week later Darrell sends me an estimate for $800. The estimate included a notation that because of age, the watch "cannot be corrected to its original accuracy." I called to speak with Darrell because I wanted to understand whether after $800 the watch would be a useful timepiece or just essentially a piece of jewelry. In other words, what was the degree of inaccuracy I could expect? Darrell couldn't answer that obvious question and kept referring me back to the written estimate, which of course had spawned my question because it was ambiguous on the very point that mattered to me. Darrell eventually admitted that he was the actually not the watch repair technician. When I asked to speak with the technician, I was told that wasn't possible because the guy doesn't want to deal with customers. After more discussion, I persuaded Darrell to ask the technician for some additional information so that I could decide whether it made sense to go forward with an expensive servicing that might not work. This took several days and caused me to suspect that the technician was not actually a Furman employee, but that Furman instead outsources repairs. When Darrell finally got back to me, I asked him that question and Darrell was evasive. Eventually, however, Darrell admitted that the technician is essentially an independent contractor who does work for a variety of shops. Maybe this won't matter to you, but it does to me. The internet is full of self-described vintage watch repair "specialists." I was reluctant to use one and preferred a local shop. But it turns out that I was just wasting my time and should have cut out the middleman. I asked for my watch back and will start over. read more
