I have been riding past Alan's bike hideout for 2 years and have seen multiple bike enthusiasts crowding his entrance. I told myself I'm going to service my foldable bike here. This seems like a place that will take care of my beloved foldie. Then covid struck. Fast forward to tonight, when my son flew in from Philly with his bike. After my bike was stolen, I needed a replacement asap, but didn't have the money or spirit to splurge on anything pricey and new. After a few disheartening craigslist bicycle viewings (looking at overpriced, possibly stolen, rusty bikes), I found these great looking ones that all happened to be listed by the same guy. Of course, I was immediately suspicious that I was flirting with another hotbed of stolen property, but my concerns faded as soon as I met Alan, and realized he was just a guy with a serious obsession and love for bikes. He only buys unwanted bikes from garage sales, runs the serial numbers with the local police department to make sure they aren't stolen, and then provides the necessary TLC. There was an impressive array of fixed-up bikes to choose from - something for everyone in the family, ranging from children's to men's to women's bikes. I scored a hybrid in great condition for $120 (retail $260), and Alan let me know that if anything ever needed fixing, to just bring it back and he would take care of it. My father-in-law gave me his mountain bike as he had no need for it any longer. Knowing he hadn't used it for years, I took it for a test ride. After riding it for a few minutes I knew it needed work so I brought it to Alan to get it ride ready. He took a look at it and said that there wasn't much to do so he wouldn't charge me the regular maintenance rate. I came back the next day and man what a difference! He asked how often and what kind of biking I was planning to do. I told him probably light trails and every other week until I got in the groove of mountain biking again. He told me when I'm ready he'd buy this bike from me, as it was more for beginners, and he'd sell me one of his better bikes. I am a start-up biker, and just dropped in at Alan's bike shop today, to get a quick tuning of my newly acquired bike which I had assembled myself. For a start, it was a bit tricky to locate the shop, as 1745 is a whole big warehouse lined by shops on both sides. You will find the shop about 7-8 shops behind, on the left side. The experience itself was like a whiff of air, got a warm welcome and my bike was on the repair platform in the next minute! He checked on all the critical things which have the most possible chances of going wreck! Brakes, handle bar, gears, all nut/bolts, paddles etc. I was in and out in 15mins! Conversations were easy, and the advises and tips, pitch perfect! Didn't mind sparing a well deserved 20$ for saving some definite future problems with my biking experience!! I could tell from riding the bike that it was very well repaired and it drove like a new bike. Gears shifted smoothly and brakes worked excellent.
