Alarm Grid is the way to go for DIYers! I ordered a system from a certain large online store. About the same time, a friend of mine ordered the same system from Sterling at Alarm Grid. My friend got first-hand installation and monitoring setup, while I struggled a bit with my existing monitoring company - they just didn't seem to care that all of the TotalConnect features weren't working properly. The WiFi module that I ordered at the other place failed, so based on my friend's experience I got a refund on that one and ordered a replacement from Alarm Grid. After a couple days, I received a follow-up email from Sterling - just asking how things were going with the module. That night I chatted with their online rep and decided to change monitoring companies. After a few more emails between Sterling and me, we set everything up. He even offered a couple months of free monitoring to help offset the prepaid cost of the other guys. In addition, the "Ask Sterling" online videos and blog are extremely helpful and available to anyone, not just their own customers. Needless to say, everything is working great. The TotalConnect service was set up perfectly the first time around. I just got my window stickers and sign and will be happy to put them outside for others to hopefully follow suit. I purchased and installed a security system from Alarm Grid 3 1/2 years ago (May, 2013) and both the system and the service from Alarm Grid has consistently exceeded my expectations every day since then. My system consists of a Honeywell L5100 system, wireless door and window sensors, carbon monoxide and smoke detectors and 2 environmental sensors (water and temperature.) Installation was a breeze. The wireless sensors were very easy to install and test. I was concerned about battery life, but my concerns were groundless. In 3 1/2 years I have only had to replace a couple of batteries - most sensors are still on their original battery. I installed recessed door sensors for asthetics and recommend buying a good (~$20) drill bit if you are drilling above a door as a less expensive spade bit is difficult to use in this location. I installed both wi-fi and backup cellular communications, and these have worked flawlessly. When I experienced a lengthy internet outage the cellular system took over and the system continued to monitor and report events. (I receive a text every time the system is armed or disarmed, so I know that communications continued.) My system includes a zwave controller, and this is the heart of my home automation system. I installed several zwave switches and outlets and have the system set to turn lights on when there is an alarm. I also used this automation to turn lights on and off when we are out of town. With the web interface I have changed the schedule from remote locations - even other countries - as long as I have internet access. I included the environmental sensors just because I could, and they literally paid for the system. I put one in the laundry room and one by the water heater in a closet off the garage. I had a water alarm one morning about an hour before we were leaving on a 2 week international vacation. The washing machine hose had sprung a small leak and the alarm went off when there was about ¼ cup of water on the floor. I was able to turn off the water and avoid a water leak while we were gone for 2 weeks - definitely saving me more than the total system cost. Later there was a leaking valve at the water heater, which again triggered an alarm with very little water - allowing me to take action before any damage occurred. Finally, the temperature alarm went off one morning on the coldest day we had in Atlanta in more than 30 years. The alarm went off when the closet temperature dropped to 45 degrees (the garage is unheated) giving me time to take action to prevent frozen pipes. (No action was needed as the alarm went off at 6 AM after the coldest part of the night was past. Extreme cold does not last long in Atlanta.) Bottom line is the system gave me peace of mind. The service from Alarm Grid is unparalleled. They helped me configure the system and connect to the monitoring center. They are a small company, and monitoring is done with a larger company that is well staffed around the clock - calling quickly when there is an alarm or even for a low battery indicator. I only called Alarm Grid a couple of times - usually when my credit card number changed, and was very satisfied with each interaction. No contract is required for monitoring - service is month by month. Good customer service is rare today, with the great customer service from Alarm Grid being one of the exceptions. I recommended Alarm Grid to a neighbor and he has been very pleased with them as well. If you are considering an alarm system I strongly recommend Alarm Grid. I was in the market for a security monitoring system and obtained detailed quotes from multiple local and nationwide installers. However, my dad (who conveniently happens to work for a major manufacturer of security monitoring systems :) convinced me to go the DIY route, for two primary reasons - (1) cost and (2) control over the system. My monthly payment is about half of what others (e.g., ADT) charge ($20/month for Total Connect, vs $35-$50/month with others). Even more importantly, I have complete control over my security installation, and I can add/change sensors, modify alerts etc. myself whenever I need to (and at no extra cost, while usually you have to pay every time for making modifications to your system). My dad was kind enough to help me choose the exact monitoring setup I need (including the specific sensors). While making these decisions, he bombarded Alarm Grid with numerous questions, yet to their credit they replied very promptly and comprehensively. We mostly dealt with Sterling, and found him to be extremely knowledgeable and responsive, on issues ranging from choosing the sensors, to tech support needed to install them, to billing and returning some extra sensors we ended up not using. Frankly, I was grossly puzzled by a 1-star Yelp review complaining about the lack of tech support - my own experience was exactly the opposite, as I got very fast and very thorough support every time. You can probably find the individual components of the system a bit cheaper elsewhere (but not by much, probably by 5-10% or so), but in my opinion it's simply not worth it - I prefer to deal with a single point of contact, who can provide decent support when needed, will take merchandise back without hassle etc. I believe Alarm Grid is fairly new on the market, but my expectations were strongly exceeded. Even after the initial purchase, I contacted Sterling many times, to get help with using Total Connect via an Android app, to get a certificate for my insurance company to obtain a discount on my home insurance, as well as on other minor things, and the level of service I got (usually from Sterling, and occasionally from his colleague Josh) was always superb. Echoing the other positive reviews out there. I was searching for a way to bring my older existing alarm system into the 21st century. I wanted an interactive system with mobile phone app control. After much research I found this company and have had a very positive experience. I contacted their sales team who were very knowledgable and told me exactly what to order. I now have Internet, phone and cellular backup as well as mobile application interactive control. Their monthly prices are very reasonable and there is NO contract requirement. The only challenging part was installing the parts they sent me but that only took me a couple hours since I don't usually mess around with alarm systems. Did a ton of research on home security before taking the plunge with a Honeywell Lynx L5100 for security, home automation, video surveillance. Wifi primary with GSM backup monitoring. We totally renovated our Chicago home in 2004 and at that time had a professional install a wired Vista 20P Honeywell alarm system. Then we decided to ditch our land line and that meant retrofitting our existing system or changing to a wireless system. After a lot of searching, we decided that we liked the quality of the Honeywell systems and that we didn't want to go through the hassle of putting in new wireless sensors and keypads since we had perfectly good wired ones. After some poking around, Sterling from Alarmgrid recommended changing out one of our keypads for a 6160RF which has a radio frequency transmitter and adding a cellular communicator so we could self-monitor without having a land line. (The panel is not close to an ethernet wire otherwise we would have gone with a system that used both the internet and cellular connections). The items arrived on time and my husband and I were able to replace the keypad and program the new one without any problems. We used the "backdoor" method described on the Alarmgrid website to determine the installer code for our system because (of course) the installer hadn't left that information for us. After a week or so, we decided to tackle the cellular communicator; this was a little more traumatic. We had to get an electrician out to fish wires between the panel and an area in the house where we could get a decent cellular signal (read: $$$ signs.) The old PROM chip was stuck in our panel but one (frantic) phone call to Sterling provided the critical tip on how to remove it. My husband wired the communicator and placed the panel in the appropriate position. This whole part took about 2 hours. Then I scheduled an activation appointment; it took about 30 minutes to get everything up and going. I've been very pleased with the professionalism of the Alarmgrid team. I wanted a self-monitored system and I didn't want high-pressure sales tactics, contracts, or high monthly fees. I paid a bit more for the equipment (vs Amazon) but I feel I've gotten better service so I think getting everything from Alarmgrid was worth it. Because of the new keypad, we can add Radio Frequency wireless sensors to our system and my plan is to add a temperature sensor for the upcoming winter. I will purchase that from Alarmgrid too because of the service I've gotten from them so far. read more

I began doing my research, and was initially going with another company, however they didn't offer the next generation hardware. I opted for Alarm Grid for that reason, and am exceedingly glad that I did. These guys have consistently been top-notch. They are very prompt, professional, and are great at what they do. Alarm Grid has been one of the best companies I have ever worked with. After years of suffering with ADT and their constant problems keeping my system running, jumping through their hoops to get it configured the way I needed it, and then the constant price increases, I decided to do some serious research onto alternatives. Enter Alarm Grid. I had read a lot of good things on both professional forums and DIY forums so I decided to take a serious look. Their hardware and service pricing seemed very reasonable. I already owned a base system and only needed to add a few components (things that ADT said wouldn't work, like Web interface and control). I decided to call them and see what kind of support I would get before even purchasing anything from them. They were great. They helped me refine my solution, actually showed me cheaper ways to get the functionality I wanted, and wound up cutting my yearly costs in less than HALF. That savings paid for the entire system upgrade. Once I received my new hardware, they were immediate in their response for questions I had during my self installation, and the promptly set an appointment for final "go live" configuration where a dedicated engineer called me and performed all the setup needed remotely and answered every question. The process was simple, fast, and more importantly set up the way I wanted it. In the time I have had the system running (over a year now) it has been totally problem free. The few times I have had triggers, the call center was immediately calling me sometimes before I could get to the panel to fix my mistake. If you either have an alarm system already installed that isn't monitored, or if you are a good DIY (Do-It-Yourself) person, this is the company to use for setup and subsequent monitoring. The fact that it is very inexpensive is secondary to the truly outstanding customer service and support that they offer. I worked with a technician named Frank over the phone to get my pre-existing system set up for Alarm Grid's monitoring, and his patience, knowledge, and helpful attitude were remarkable. There were even a couple of things I was considering glossing over just to get the install completed, but he unselfishly recommended that we take care of them and did not rush me. Once some companies "have you" as a customer, they often tend to treat one as an account that is simply a money source, with little personalization and little care. I have found that Alarm Grid, despite its stand-offish, industrial name, is peopled with caring, competent native English speakers who actually care about the quality of the installation and service. BTW, one of the reasons I was willing to "gamble" on them is that there's no contract -- you're not locked into a year with them. I would venture to guess that they never had anyone cancel. I had a 16 year old Vista 20P system that I installed when building my home which I wanted to update in order to add modern remote monitoring capabilities. After poking around the net for a bit, I kept bumping into AlarmGrid. I had a number of questions about the best way to get what I wanted, so I decided to go ahead and ping AlarmGrid, since they had the most technical data available, free for the taking. I could not be happier or more impressed with the assistance I received. Joe, Jorge, and Dylan worked with me via email and chat and were enormously helpful. When one wasn't available, another was. I don't think I ever went more than an hour or two before receiving a helpful reply from one of them. The night before making the needed hardware upgrades, (which BTW meant losing all of my previous programming), I created my account, paid a 1 month fee, and included some of the details about my new hardware. The next morning I received an email indicating the needed accounts and radio activation's had been set up and they were ready to help when I was ready. Once the hardware was installed, I applied power to the system and the new cellular link powered up along with everything else. About a minute later, my phone rang, and it was Jorge. They saw my system come on-line so he called to help with the final set-up. He was able to save me a bunch of time by interviewing me and setting up the zones, custom alpha descriptors, etc., that I wanted, and with the push of a button, he programmed my system. Bingo. Done. Again, I'm very pleased with the service I received even before I was a paying customer, and so far I've had no problems with the self-gold monitoring plan I'm on. read more

Another VERY happy customer with Alarm Grid. We got several quotes from local security companies - all quite expensive (twice the monitoring charge as Alarm Grid), required contracts and didn't allow me, the homeowner, any real control over my system. These other companies all offered services contracts for an additional $5-$6 a month to come out whenever I wanted something changed/added, etc. I wanted to be able to program my system and I didn't want to have to call someone anytime I wanted to add a keyfob or change a battery. I was able to purchase my alarm system directly from Alarm Grid and install it myself. I really appreciated being able to do this. I didn't have to take off work to meet an installer. It saved money and I have a better understanding of how the alarm system works. (We aren't "scared" of it per se.) The online videos were helpful as well as the FABULOUS customer service. Also, we were able to link several sensors that had already been installed in our home by the previous owner. And, we will be able to add features as our budget allows - like a water detector in our attic where our hot water heater is installed; gate sensors, etc. My husband thought I was crazy to install a security system on our own. Now he's bragging to his friends about the money we saved. We have the internet based wireless monitoring, with old-fashioned landline as a back-up. We also have the TotalConnect feature. Our old wired security system's motherboard bit the dust recently, and I began to research my options. Luckily, I found Alarm Grid. I was very impressed with the videos that Sterling has done on youtube. So I purchased a Lyric system from Alarm Grid. Sterling saved me a lot of time, money, and aggravation by recommending the purchase of the 5800C2W which allowed me to reuse almost all of the wired sensors that were already installed in the house. If you use the 5800C2W, I highly recommend watching Sterling's video. You'll then understand the quirks of linking it to a Lyric system. Activation and registration for self-monitoring with Total Connect 2.0 through Alarm Grid could not have been easier. When I was looking into purchasing an alarm system I had three main features that I needed to have: 1) It needed to be a DIY system as I am one that prefers to do everything myself when possible and I did not want to have a central station monitoring and contacting the police/fire when it goes off to start with, but wanted to be alerted myself so that I can initiate the calls. 2) It needed to be completely wireless as my entire house is completely finished and running wires is nearly impossible. 3) It needed to be able to communicate either via WiFi or through cellular service given that I do not have either a landline or VoIP system, we use cell phones for everything. After scouring through countless web sites and reviews of different systems, I decided on the system to purchase that met all of my criteria. Once my decision was made on a make and model, it came down to whom to purchase from. I am one of those people that prefers to do as much as possible through looking at web sites and via e-mail, and after contacting multiple companies, the outstanding service that the people at AlarmGrid provided solidified my decision to go with them for both the hardware and monitoring services. I must say that their responsiveness and honesty in making decisions about various sensors really made the difference for me. After placing my order I received notification that everything but two sensors that I orders were in stock and they had shipped out everything and would ship the other two sensors as soon as they received them. Two days later I received my first shipment (oh and a couple days after that received the other two sensors.) Now on to the fun stuff. After e-mailing with the folks at AlarmGrid I decided to bench install the system first to get all of the sensors configured and labeled as to where they would go. The installation of the adaptors (WiFi and GSM) is incredibly simple and within a matter of 15 minutes was ready to program my first sensor. 30 minutes later, I had 10 door/window sensors programmed in and ready to go (way to easy...) Once that was done, a quick e-mail to AlarmGrid to program the WiFi/GSM and TotalConnect and I would be set. So at about 7:30 p.m. I fired off the e-mail and to my surprise at around 8:30-9:00 got a call from them letting me know to call if I wanted to active it (now that it service that I don't think I would have gotten anywhere else.) About 10 minutes later it is up and running and I am into configuring the web based monitoring services. How cool is this!!! Now it's just a matter of getting the sensors put in place and tinkering with the alarm text and e-mail alerts. Once they were all in, I tested every one of them and can honestly say this system is great and the help from the folks at AlarmGrid was awesome. As I continued to play around with the system over the next several days, I also found that AlarmGrid has more information posted on the products they sell including manuals and FAQ's than any other company and site out there and everything is incredibly easy to find. I am a customer of Alarm Grid out of San Jose, California and can offer my testimony of their value, service quality and technical skill. I had my new construction home pre-wired for alarm prior to contacting Alarm Grid, but before the alarm installation could be finished the installer moved and left me hanging. I had ADT, FrontPoint, Comcast, ATnT, and others all come out and talk to me about completing the alarm and bringing up service. Most of them wanted me to switch to their wireless system, abandon my hard wired install, either receiving a few free sensors or paying a much higher setup ($1,500) price to get the equivalent of what I already had wired for. I don't know how I came across Alarm Grid's website initially but I contacted them to kick the tires but was welcomed by the owner taking well over an hour to understand the state of my home security and recommending hardware to complete the installation. I verified the prices Alarm Grid offered the hardware for and it was comparable or better than anywhere else I could find online. I bought the equipment and attempted to complete the installation but could not. Sterling went again the extra mile to find me a local installer who would take over the home security installation (almost impossible to find on your own as no one wants to touch someone else's setup after it has been started). He could not have made a better recommendation and the crew of guys came in and within 2 days had everything running perfectly. (Incidentally, the initially installer had miswired so much of the install from using the wrong Ohm resisters, wires mislabeled, insufficient power for the number of zones I had... there was no way I or Sterling could have known how to fix the problems over the phone). Once the installation was complete I brought the system up with Alarm Grid and it is amazing. I have remote controls, keypads, mobile/tablet applications, web access, everything and more to arm, disarm, configure, view logs from anywhere. I have compared it to my friends who have ADT and ATnT, the HoneyWell portal blows them away, all for half the monthly fee, and no contract so you can cancel anytime. I could not recommend Alarm Grid any more than I already do. I am not receiving any incentive to make this testimony and while I could get a free month for each person I bring over, I really am so grateful for their service that I do it freely without any hand out. I would like to share my review of Alarm Grid services. It's a long story, but the background is key to understanding the "World Class" surprisingly not so well known company and why I consider it world class and probably the best monitoring company, or just plain company out there. I bought a new house in a new development. Shortly after moving in, the peddlers came knocking on the door at all hours, during dinner, nearly bed time and paid no heed to the no soliciting policy, but they are called peddlers here and wear a county or state issued "Peddlers ID" badge. The first company, and I'm sure I can say their name, but they are recognized as #3 is some ratings and managed to get enormous exposure through a popular TV show. The peddler was a very nice guy and had a great script. The features and looks of the product very appealing, you almost couldn't say no, and you really don't get a chance to, the peddler presses a button and announces the installer is on his way over right now - great business model, but shady. The contract choices, three years or five years. Somehow three years really means 42 months. The change your mind clause on the contract was 3 days! So not only do you not get the real opportunity to sleep it over or talk it over or see how it fits in your budget, they are on a mission to seal the deal. I had them change the 3 days to 30 days, and I am so glad I did. So many issues with performance, faulty fancy stuff, 30 false notifications a day about motion at my front door. I told them if it happened one more time, out goes their equipment. Before the 30 days was up I had the equipment removed, they are nice enough to leave all the holes in the walls and ceilings. They did their best to offer incentives to not cancel. And never refunded my money. I needed an alarm system and thought about the DIY route. Remembering that I went to school with someone that owns an alarm company, I gave him a call. He was helpful, told me where to order from and his account number to get the dealer price, wasn't much cheaper than other methods like Amazon, but was a better route as the salespeople were knowledgeable and very helpful. During my research about what equipment to buy, cost, brand name and all that, I ventured on to YouTube for some much needed guidance for installation and set up. There are a few out there and I was shocked and amazed to discover the Alarm Grid videos. They literally walk you through EVERYTHING you need to know, do, and consider and EXACTLY how to install your own DIY system, the very system that came up number one in my research. I mean every little detail and never, never a pitch to do business with them, you can even call them for FREE advice or have them walk you through any issue. Many of the videos where conducted by Sterling, an outstanding customer service guy, technical guy, and I wasn't even a customer! Almost like a celebrity to me, like he should have his own show on the DIY channel. I actually had to ask him - what's in this for you guys. He briefly touched on their monitoring service, but never suggested or pitched why you should use theirs. It was amazing and surprising. After playing the videos several times, being walked through the total install, step by step, item by item, suggesting things I had not considered, all this assistance and totally free. My system was up and running quickly. I did use the holes left by the shady folks and that worked out. While it was not being monitored, I did buy the equipment to use two communication protocols, Internet and GSM cell service. I was now shopping for the least expensive monitoring service, some advertise no contract and very cheap "as low as" so much a month. I called a few of them; the amount of up selling was annoying and a huge turn off. I was settled on one company, you had to input all your information online, not once but several times, trying to reach someone was difficult and the excuse was "well sometimes the information doesn't go through" I thinking if you can't rely on them getting information through a form on their website, how bad is their monitoring? Then it hit me, like a ton of bricks, why didn't I contact Alarm Grid, they were the most helpful and from watching the YouTube DIY videos you wouldn't even know they provided monitoring because they don't shove it at you, the videos exist to help. I called them and got everything set on the phone and online, couldn't have been any easier - and their pricing, better than others and not an extra $2 for this or $1 for this, one price for a package of exactly what you want. I wanted to use Total Connect, no problem. I am slowly automating the house and the more stuff I add to the alarm system, they are quick to accommodate. The price is half, maybe less than half of the peddler's product and my system does all theirs does and I own it! In researching security systems, equipment, and options online, Alarm Grid often appeared in searches via Google and, having now worked with them to install and establish monitoring of our system, it is apparent why they are present in all of these searches. The articles and information on their website have been a tremendous help in understanding all of the critical pieces of a security system. The advice in the articles was always presented in a non-biased manner; other websites always seemed to be trying to selling you something, first, and providing information a distant second. With the information on Alarm Grid's website, I was able to select, purchase, and install all of the components necessary to monitor a 4,350 sq-ft house. Based on this positive experience during installation, I selected Alarm Grid for monitoring, as well... and I am glad I did. Having been convinced they employ robust monitoring/central station technology, I was happy with the broad selection of monitoring plans that are priced very competitively and fairly (with no contracts/extra fees!). Response and activation upon ordering was prompt, courteous and professional. The activation went very smoothly... and the end result was a security system with all of the features I was hoping to achieve. Sterling and the crew at Alarm Grid are great! I have dealt with other large online DIY alarm companies and their support isn't usually the best and hold times are huge. Alarm Grid has great online chat and they are always able to help and answer my questions. When i have called them i got through right away. Product arrived quickly. I purchased my DYI Honeywell alarm system and devices from another company. I had a question about getting it set up that the other company was clueless about. So I googled the problem, and there was Alarm Grid on the web with a thorough answer. So I purchased a couple of components from Alarm Grid. Alarm Grid's assistance did not end there. Sterling (who has to win the all-time-best customer service award) answered all of my questions and offered all kinds of helpful info and advice.
