I rented a car from Thrifty in the Anchorage airport and had a terrible experience. When I picked up the vehicle, it already had a small crack in the windshield which I documented with photos in their parking lot. Now, after returning the car, they are trying to charge me $919.68 for damage I did not cause. I provided them with my timestamped photos, yet they claimed the crack wasn't "clear enough" and asked why I didn't return the car. Shouldn't they be responsible for providing vehicles in good condition in the first place? I see that Thrifty responds to reviews with the same generic message, claiming they'll forward complaints to local management--but does anything actually get resolved? Based on other reviews, it seems like they just hope customers give up. I will be disputing the charge with my credit card and reporting this to the BBB and the Attorney General's Office in Alaska. If you rent from this location, document EVERYTHING in extreme detail and be prepared for shady business. read more

We made our reservation over a month in advance, for 10 days for a mini van as our family if 6 are all tall & would need extra space for luggage. We were delayed for our pick up, but Thrifty sent an email to reassure us, stating "delays are normal, but your reservation is still valid," and directed us to see the help desk. By the time we got to the desk it was after 2:00am. The attendant said, we missed our pick up so she did not have to honor our previous reservation, nor did they have the mini van we had reserved. She stated they were "sold out," even though our reservation had been for 10 days. (It seems to be the airport con in Anchorage b/c every desk stated they were sold out, but the garage was full). Even though they were sold out, she somehow proceeded to rent us a small suv @ OVER DOUBLE our original reservation price and nearly $3,000.00! She stated the new reservation was going to be around $1,100.00, which we figured made sense as our more spacious minivan was supposed to be $1,400.00. However! When she gave us the total it was over $2,600.00. When we questioned the price, she said the additional $1,500.00 was "taxes & fees" & that they were locally owned & therefore did not have to honor our reservation, even though Thrifty had assured us it was still valid. She also stated that they also did not have to honor the rate that we were given, as they are a Thrifty franchise, but they can make up their own rules and rates. Lovely welcome to Alaska. I need to know if their mini vans have bench seats in second row or not since we have a lot of luggage and 5 people. Line was like 40 people long with one person working at the counter. The rental car place next to it had a sign that said "price matching no line" so clearly it's an ongoing problem. If you rent from this place select the pay when you get there option so you can hop over to the other place. I've been in this line 30 min and everyone behind me is soooo upset. The worst ever. Also when I finally got to the front she said would you like complete, risk or basic insurance for additional $$ which is so shady because she didn't mention that you don't have to use that. Unfortunately, I did not review the abysmal reviews and legal claims against this company prior to making a rental car reservation for my husband. I made my reservation via the AARP Travel Center for $276, including all fees and taxes. I specifically declined insurance coverage because my credit card and personal car insurance both provide coverage for rental cars. My husband picked the car up and again verbally declined insurance. Upon his return of the car, I received an invoice via email for $440, which included $194 worth of insurance coverage charges. I call Thrifty and spoke with a very unprofessional representative who insisted that these charges are mandatory, which is absolutely false. The next day, Thrifty lifted the $1,100 hold on my credit card, leaving me with a final charge of $519, even more than the already erroneous $440 for which they invoiced me. They have yet to provide me with documentation or an explanation for this additional $78 charge. I have been forced to dispute these charges with my credit card company as recourse. However, I am also strongly considering filing a consumer complaint with the Alaska Attorney General's Office as this company's deceptive trade practices are clearly an epidemic based the many negative reviews reporting similar treatment. Minoru was the absolute best!!! We had the most amazing experience renting a car at Thrifty. We came to rent the car a few hours early and they didn't have a mid size SUV available yet - he told us that it would be more daily to be able to pick up early. We ended up seeing some other carriers had lower rates and he went out of his way to direct us to booking directly on the website with a discount instead of our old Expedia booking - he saved us hundreds of dollars for the car and we got a better car by doing this. Yelp 100 Challenge 2017 - # 67/100 Made a reservation online for a 13-day car rental. Our flight arrived at 4 am but their counter doesn't open till 6 am. Too many add on charges and I do not understand the airport concession fee if I still had to wait 2 hours for their counter to open. My receipt said that I received the car at 6:01 am and have to be returned after a week no later than 6:00 am. Mind you the clock actually read 6:01 am when the employee opened the counter. It took about 10 minutes to sign all the papers, so I don't understand why I have to return it 10 minutes earlier than that. It's the principle. I feel like I'm cheated. Maybe she wasn't happy I cut the rental time from 13 days to a week. I balked at the price I was given damn near $1500. Sheesh, I might as well buy a car for that price. read more

Rented to pick up at the anchorage airport, car was filthy inside and out, dark so had to turn on phone light and through all the dirt saw 4 areas that had scratches. Asked about connecting Android GPS no one could help me, next morning called and they said probably does not have chip so I would have to come in to get one. After going to YouTube was able to get it going, vehicle stopped or screen completely turned off se real times on the first day alone, very poor service. read more

Pepa assisted us with executing our car rental. we rented the "manager's special" which we discover was a tiny little vehicle with no back cargo. He offered us an upgrade at a reduced amount from what is usually offered. We declined until we saw the car. We did an immediate about-face and headed back hoping the other deal was still on the table. We all had a good laugh. This is without a doubt the worst car rental company in the US! After flying across the country for our first vacation to Alaska with three children, we arrived on time and proceeded to the Thrifty counter to pickup our outrageously priced SUV. We were interrogated by the nastiest employee that I have ever had the displeasure of dealing with. Pepe?! He was obnoxious, threatening and rude. When my husband asked why we needed to give him certain information, he basically walked away, came back and told us that we needed to walk away from the counter and wait until a car could be brought over (AKA known as we gave away your car). We sat with our exhausted children until finally I went back up to see when the car would arrive, only to have this incompetent representative, tell me that and I quote, "We are not going to rent a car to you!" He then proceeded to hide behind the door refusing to explain why?!!!! I have never seen anything like this in my life! FORTUNATELY WE WENT TO BUDGET AND GOT A RENTAL IMMEDIATELY FOR HALF THE QUOTED COST!!!! A manager came out and said that they could not rent to us, since PEPE (who is a huge menacing man) was threatened by the manner that my husband asked his questions??? The worst car rental experience I ever had. I rented an SUV for two weeks from the Anchorage Airport Thrifty. When I returned the car, the agent spent fifteen minutes inspecting the windshield (from inside, outside, driver's side, passenger's side) before she informed me there was a chip in the windshield. It was so small as to be barely noticeable (less than 0.5 cm line); it looked like a speck of dirt. Other rental car companies (eg Enterprise, Hertz) have guidelines about the size of defects on windows or body before the driver is charged, but not Thrifty. They don't account for routine wear and tear that occurs from simply driving. Since I waived additional insurance coverage and didn't report any damage to the car before the rental, I'm now being charged $244 ($75 for the repair; $144/day for loss of use for one day; $25 admin fees). Not enough for me to file a claim with my insurance company, but definitely enough that I will never rent from Thrifty again. read more

I'm really surprised by all the negative reviews for Thrifty Car Rental. I had a good experience with them. Previously, I had rented from a car rental place at the airport, which was fine, but the airport tax is outrageous. I decided to rent from Thrifty since they had competitive pricing and I dodged an extra 10-20 bucks a day in airport taxes. I ALWAYS do a thorough inspection of my vehicle and document every single scratch and ding before I drive it off the lot. As a result, I didn't encounter any issues with being accused of damages. This is the RENTER's responsibility. Folks who don't take the time to do a thorough inspecition are risking being nailed with charges later. This is true at ANY rental place. The cute little Eastern European gal who worked the counter was very sweet. She wasn't super-experienced, but her great attitude made up for her lack of knowledge. She took her time and went through the paperwork with me and we had no problems. All in all, I would recommend Thrifty without reservation. On caveat: My only complaint is one that I would lodge against ALL ANCHORAGE car rental places. In winter, snow tires should be standard. We shouldn't have to pay extra for a necessary safety feature. Car rental dudes of Anchorage, get with the program. Give us studs or give us death!!! read more

I typically dread car rentals whenever I travel, but here at the airport Thrifty I was treated with exceptional customer service. A big shout out to the employee (I think his name was Pepe or Pepa or something like that...) for making everything very smooth. I rented the car through Thrifty online, and he made checking in and paying on the spot simple. I was not hit with any unexpected fees, just $33 for a full sized car, and he informed me of the $200 charge on my credit card as a security deposit that would be returned after the rental. My car insurance card wasn't good enough. Who the hell carry's that. Also Thrifty's website does not tell you that when reserving the car. The Thrifty rep realized this after I showed him. After 15 min. I left and rented from Alamo, got a cheaper rate by 3 buck. I travel a lot and rent a lot for work and personal 15-20x a year. I have never run into this problem before. Hands down the WORST rental experience of my life. This place is horrible. The area where you pick up your car is very dark so its easy to miss any problems you might see. The desk people are never outside to help you in the evenings. When I returned my rental, they tried to pin damage on me that was preexisting. I had circled it on my paper but didnt get their sign off (as no one was there). They then told me they would consider not charging me and would call me back only for it to end up in collections! I used to rent from them all the time for work but that will NEVER happen again. I have also advised my colleagues to stay away. TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. No decency at all. Avoid. I will never rent from this agency again. The man at the counter must have the worst customer service skills anywhere. He acts like he hates his job. He is mean, condescending and rude. When walked up to the counter and told him we had a reservation. His reply was, "Give me your ID". So, as my husband handed him his license, my husband said, "Here is my driver's license". The agent's reply was, "OH, is that what this is?" When I handed him my ID & license, he literally threw my license back at me. Later when my husband said he wanted me to be able drive too. The agent said it would be $10 more a day.. My husband told him him that he has the Blue Chip Rewards program, which allows me to be added at no charge. The guy raised his voice & told my husband that they are aren't corporate, they are locally owned & they don't do that. I showed him my phone stating that is shows it was part of our reservation. He then said to give him my license. The same license that he had just thrown back at me. There is so much more that happened & the way he talked to us was very unprofessional. Bad experience with these guys. We were told very insistently when we picked up the car that roadside assistance (at the rip off price of 7.99 per day) was mandatory. Tried to argue but was told that this was the policy of the branch owners and not up for discussion. Found out after the fact that I was lied to (by two separate clerks). Watch out for these people as they don't seem to be doing business honestly. Now I'm left trying to get my 40.00 back. On top of that the car had 36k miles on it - the most i have ever had on any car i have rented - and was worn out on the inside with windshield wipers that were likely original as they were totally not effective. I've traveled to Anchorage for business for several years, and had been a loyal Thrifty Customer. Unfortunately, my last experience there has left me somewhat soured on them. When I made my initial reservation, I mis-read my arrival time, and my flight arrived early - so I was at the rental counter approximately an hour an fifteen minutes early for pick-up. The desk agent informed me that they had no mid-size cars available, as I was early, but the did have a full-size that they could put me in for an additional $25 per day (!!!). I told them that I was a Thrifty Blue Chip member, and asked if they could work with me... Alas, the answer was "no" - they told me I could either wait until my appointed time, or pay for the upgrade. I checked back twice but each time, they still had no mid-size car for me. I sat stewing for the full hour and 15, until 12:00 and 3 seconds. Returning to the counter, they of course had no mid-size cars, but at that point they upgraded me to the full-size for free. So... in the end, I get the larger car for free, but rather than being a happy customer who is writing a 5-star review for an employee with a can-do attitude who comped a loyal customer, I'm writing a 2-star review. Thrifty - Anchorage Airport, you missed an opportunity to impress! Almost forgot - I'll also add that upon my return to Washington, I got a letter informing me that I hadn't returned the car full (I had, and had receipts to prove it), and that they were charging me an additional $22.xx for 3 gallons of gas! This charge was removed, but only after I scanned/emailed the receipts. No fuel shortage was noted by the attendant when I returned the car... Because there wasn't one! read more
