Went in for an annual eye exam while wildfire smoke was in town. My eyes were kinda bothered by the smoke and the doctor saw it. The conversation should have stopped there. Instead health insurance was billed with a medical exam when its quite obvious what caused it: the smoke. I didn't need a doctor to tell me that. The prescription the doctor gave was for over the counter re-wetting drops. The purpose of my visit was an annual eye exam, not to diagnose why my eyes were partially red. It's fairly obvious why. I'm walking through in one of the most polluted cities in the world on the way to the optometrist. The doctor should have said "Wildfire smoke is irritating your eyes. Come back next week or when the smoke clears for an exam." This is how my old eye doctor would have handled this and he operated until retirement, had a great practice, was passionate about optometry. What do I get here? A business that operates like it's run by private equity. They did a bait and switch. Instead of what I expected to pay for an eye exam, they billed a more expensive health insurance co-pay. This seems more like a money making strategy and insurance fraud than looking out for my well-being. When I called for clarification the woman I spoke with was not helpful and she wouldn't reverse the health insurance claim. I was honestly frustrated when I found out there was no recourse and the woman I spoke with was not understanding. She didn't treat me as a person seeking health care, more like a customer that needs to go away. My Optic turned a $10 eye exam into a $60 health insurance co-pay on a whim. I didn't go in looking for help with my eye dryness due to wildfire smoke. I wanted an annual eye exam. I didn't ask for the services they billed me. The doctor didn't make it clear what was going on with billing in the exam room, didn't give me a choice. Had I been given the choice I would have opted out and come back later for an annual eye exam. I looked into this more and on the chart it says the doctor diagnosed me with "eye dryness due to excessive use of contact lenses." I hadn't worn contact lenses in weeks not did I wear any into the appointment. The woman threatened to charge me the full amount for the visit instead of charging health insurance as a possible conclusion. I think they are committing insurance fraud. This experience left me wanting to dispute the claim and still needing an eye exam, questioning if I should even go to eye doctors if the lot of them are going to practice business this way. They need to make it really clear they can turn your eye exam into a medical exam and give you the opportunity to deny or accept. Instead, it's confusing and you end up spending more money than you intended. When I was asking why the insurance needed to be billed, I felt pushed around. No one was explaining anything properly. This place used to have good customer service and good doctors. Now I'm not so sure. read more

Professional service with friendly and knowledgeable staff. The shop is modern and also pretty fun! I had a regular eye exam with Dr. To and was very overwhelmingly impressed by my experience. The quality of the patient education was exceptional, and I really felt heard and seen by my provider (pun intended). Parking is easy on the adjacent streets and it was easy to make an appointment online. Pricing was described in full transparency, and I was able to refuse additional services that didn't feel necessary or applicable to me. I was able to use my vision insurance very easily too. Questions were not answered with good explanation and it almost felt like the person was annoyed that I dare ask. I declined to order my lenses right at that moment because it just was so pushy and off-putting. Why the 4 stars then? Because I returned after trying to do my own research and met Angela. Thank you for taking the time to explain what the new type of coatings were, even drawing out the type of progressive lenses that were recommended with easy to understand explanations, and making the whole experience exactly opposite of the earlier one. I'm really late in posting this review, life got in the way. But I recently had my eye exam at another business and it reminded me to post about my experience at Myoptic. I had my eye exam in March 2022. I ordered new glasses frames with new prescription lenses. The lenses were ready about 3-4 weeks later, but when I went in, the optician informed me that there was a flaw/scratch on one of the lenses and if I wanted to, I could get them replaced, so I did that. Another 3-4 weeks later, now May 2022, I went to pick up the glasses with the new lenses. I tried them on, they didn't seem quite right, but the staff told me to give them a try for a few days and come back if there were any problems. There were. The prescription was not right, the lenses had this weird effect on my eyes and if I left them on for even a half hour, I got a headache. So, I called Myoptic to tell them, it took a few tries but finally I got an appointment to see the optician, to see if she could determine the problem. She concluded it was a problem with the prescription and not the lenses, so she asked me to set up another appointment with the doctor, so he could adjust my prescription. After another appointment the doctor, and then another few weeks waiting for the lenses to be ready again...By then it was June 2022. The prescription was still bad enough that I just could not stand wearing the glasses. I tried everyday for a week, and just kept getting headaches. Finally, I decided it's not working, I just have to tell them the prescription is wrong again. So I called. And I called. And I called. I called at least once a week for 4 weeks, left messages, and no one ever got back to me. Finally, I just popped into the office and told them the glasses were not right, and could they please just fix the prescription? The staff told me I'd have to pay for another exam. I said, no, this should still be tied to the original exam, glasses and lenses, and that this is their mistake. (In ten years of wearing glasses, I've never had to get my prescription adjusted, not to mention, multiple times, until I went to Myoptic). Then she said, "Well it has been 6 months..." Sort of alluding that I was trying to pull some sort of scam. So I explained the whole back story again... that all of these delays were not my fault and not for lack of trying to get in touch with them. By then I was really angry, it was clear they could not care at all that I had to go through so much, and STILL didn't have glasses that I could wear. It ended with her telling me that she would "look into it" and call me back the following week. I never heard from anyone. So, I gave up, because 6 months of appointments, calls, back and forth, back and forth, and in the end they want to charge me for another exam?!?! I'd had enough. With insurance, I paid more than $300 for glasses I could never use. It was a terrible customer experience, a complete waste of time and money. I absolutely do not recommend Myoptic Sellwood. They're happy to take your money the first time, but if your glasses don't work for you, good luck trying to get them fixed. read more

A really fun optometry shop (photo booth and treat dispensing machine, what?), it's unlike any other shop that i've been to. The choices of frames that they have cant be beat. Loved the Anne et Valentin frames especially. I also appreciate that they pick the brands carefully. If you need style help, ask for Krystal, she helped me pick out frames and narrow the choices down so we were out the door in minutes when it would normally take me ages to decide. Also thankful to Justin who helped me square out my prescription from california and got me an early approval with next year's coverage. Although I didn't get my prescription from here, I met Dr. Summy To who is a fabulous human being. I highly recommend this shop! Will definitely go here again for my next eye glasses need. read more

My first yelp review, but I am disappointed. The receptionists rarely answer the phone, return phone calls, or make eye contact. The glasses lens quality is poor as and just the lenses, are $700 to replace. Outside the warranty date, the UV coating cracked making the glasses useless. I was asked if I ever used a T-shirt to clean my glasses like it was my fault the UV coating cracked. Not worth the money. read more

I think I've been in denial about my eyesight for a while now. Between my boyfriend pestering me to get my eyes checked, and recently turning 30 (ugh!), it seemed like it's finally time to cave and get things checked out. Myoptic made the whole process not just stress-free, but actually enjoyable! Setting up an appointment was super easy and can be done online. I even filled out all of my personal/medical info online so there was no paperwork needed on appointment day. When I arrived at Myoptic, I was greeted and offered a drink while they checked me in. First they tested my peripheral vision, then they took an optomap photo of both eyes. No air puffs, no dilating, no discomfort. After the first two eye tests, Dr. Sagina O'Halloran went over the photos (so cool to see your own retinas!) and then did more tests to determine what prescription I needed. There was no pressure to buy their frames, but I fell in love with a pair of Garrett Leight California frames and bought them. Oh, did I mention that they have a TON of frames?! Tables and drawers full. They also have a photo booth you can pose with some frames to see how you like them. So fun! Anyways... I came back the next week when my glasses arrived at the store. In addition to making sure I loved my glasses and the prescription felt right, they gave me a very nice case for the glasses, cleaning cloths and cleaning spray. After each appointment they promptly sent an email with relevant info: prescription, invoice, care instructions... I love it! No papers I have to worry about losing. I really can't say enough good things about Myoptic. Every single person who works there is so nice, and it feels like they go above and beyond to make sure you're comfortable and happy. read more

Years later my family bought a house in to south portland and I'm happy that their newest location is near us. What an amazing group of patient centric folks! I had some sudden, unexpected things happening with my eyes that were quite troubling, but had no way to understand how serious the issue was. I went online to attempt to get a new patient appointment but I saw that was a few weeks out, so I called them and I am so glad I did! They got me in that day, and Dr. To was amazing! They got me in right away, made me super comfortable while my eyes dilated and then completed the exam. Luckily, it was nothing serious, but they scheduled a follow-up in a month just to make sure. I can't say enough about how much I love this place! I usually have such a hard time finding a pair of frames, but not only do they have the best selection in town everyone went out of their way to help me find the perfect pair. Most other places have the same black/brown plastic frames, but there so many fun options to choose from. I went with a more adventurous pair than I'm used to (based on their advice) and I get constant compliments on them. Aside from their glasses Dr. O'Halloran made the exam so pleasant. I usually hate that puff of air durning the exam, but luckily their brand new equipment doesn't do that. I have really bad astigmatism and thought I couldn't wear contacts, but Dr. O'Halloran checked around and found me several different options for contacts. I've been trying for years and no one has been able to do this! Aside from all this she spotted something that might be of concern and requested information form all my previous exams to make sure I was fine.
