Alcala is a little gem of a place; family-run, authentic, personal and satisfying. It's a slice of a classic neighborhood side of Manhattan - nothing slick or "cookie cutter" about it. Although it's conveniently a few blocks from Grand Central, Alcala has a homey feel. You don't go for the scene, stylish interior or the bar. They have a healthy following of regulars, they welcome everyone to feel like family and it's all about the food. Highly recommend any of their soups, have enjoyed most if not all of the seafood tapas on the menu. Canelones with shrimp and spinach in beschamel - a specialty of the chef/ owner - not to be missed! Everything they serve is made there, with pride. They take reservations. Check it out.

My partner and I enjoyed a date night dinner here! I read through some of the reviews and although I can agree they may not have been the best about refilling waters every minute (I think that is a very American custom normalized in American restaurants; if you go to Europe, they are not like this), but then if you want it, make sure to ask for it. The tapas were really great and surprisingly our favorite was the lentil soup.... it was SO GOOD that was the first dish we finished! The paella comes in second. A large portion and great seafood flavor. Overall it's not the stereotypical Spanish food, may be because the owner is from a certain region of Spain. Nice experience and honestly the vibe reminded me of somewhere you'd find in Europe itself. The menu is quite large, so if you need pointers, ask the staff what they recommend (what we did). The meatballs are in a gravy sauce and actually reminded me of Swedish meatballs vs. the red sauce meatballs that can be found at Spanish restaurants like Boqueria. They were very good, just a different take so be aware of that!

alcala_nyc is a hidden gem for anyone who appreciates refined Spanish cuisine without pretense. It's a perfect spot for a date night, a celebration, or just a dinner where food truly takes center stage. Sardinas a la Parilla were a standout. Fresh, simply prepared with just the right amount of char from the grill. The skin was crisp, the flesh delicate with a clean, briny flavor and taste of pimenton oil. Paella with seafood : The rice was perfectly cooked--al dente with a subtle saffron aroma--layered with fresh mussels, clams, shrimp, and squid. The flavors were rich and balanced, with just enough socarrat (that crispy bottom layer) to make it extra satisfying. Gambas al Ajillo (Shrimp in a sizzling garlic sauce), the shrimp arrive bathed in a fragrant garlic-infused olive oil with just the right touch of heat from sliced red chili. The aroma alone is enough to transport you to a seaside taverna. The shrimp were plump, perfectly cooked--tender yet with a satisfying bite--and absorbed the bold, garlicky essence beautifully. I love to come back to this restaurant again if I'm craving for Spanish food.

The best Spanish restaurant in New York! Delicious authentic food, great wine selection, and very friendly staff. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a wonderful dining experience.

Great food quality and great service. Cozy restaurant with Spanish food. Bread is served and it goes well with olive oil. Areoz Confotado was filled with ingredients, Chuletitas de Cordero a la Parrilla grilled lamb chops cooked medium was perfectly cooked and the most delicious lamb chops I've had. It was tender with a little bit of crispy areas. Pepito de Solomillo was like ground meat on garlic bread. It was good. Dessert plate, Variedad de Postres Espanoles had 4 types of dessert. Portion was on the small side, meant for 1 person, we each had a bite. Waiters were friendly. I recommend trying this place for good quality Spanish food.

I'm so confused by these bad reviews! Our weekday lunch was amazing! We ordered quite a bit for two people and ended up packing some of the items at the end. The soups were a standout, as were the boquerones. A bit on the pricey side, $185 for two people, with the caveat that we did order a lot and had some wine and sherry. Would definitely come back!

Overall great taste, flavor, service and experience. Service was great. On point ambiance.

By far the best personal food experience for first time out of State visitors from Louisiana. Menu choice authentic and found the final product quality exceeded all expectations. Hats off to the cooking staff and mostly to our well knowledged waiter / host Samual for his superior service, 5/5 Stars. Hand Salute

Very cozy place. A nice bottle of olive oil on each table.

We were a little bit disappointed there was no squid ink, but the dishes recommended by our server were pretty tasty. The restaurant is very cozy and the service is amazing. We will go back again, but need to call first to make sure they have the Arroz Negro!!

Great tapas, amazing service. Best fresh sea food around.

Amazing service , food is fresh ambiance is calm and refreshing. Recommend the sea food!

We tried a variety of dishes and each one was a hit (from the croquettes to the octopus to the paella). One member of our group doesn't usually like seafood and thought the octopus was delicious! The drinks (both alcoholic and non alcoholic) were also yummy. The staff were super accommodating as well which I really appreciated!! Of note, the restaurant bar stays open longer than the kitchen so make sure you check in with them on when the kitchen closes (it was around 10 when we went but things were still in flux so that may change!)

I was at this location of this Basque and Spanish restaurant a while ago with a group, with their…read moreoriginal location being in Harlem. The table we sat at was quite large, and I think it could have fit a few more people. The staff was friendly, and the lighting wasn't too dark, nor was it too loud. While I liked the atmosphere, I found the food, or rather specifically the tapas, to be not good at best, while the main dishes were better but also ranged in quality. The fact that the tapas we ordered were pretty closely priced to the mains means I would recommend the mains only based on portion and taste alone. To drink, a bunch of us split a bottle of wine from their large and pretty reasonably priced selection. The first tapas that arrived was something that I could not eat. This was the Pulpo Zarautz for $32, listed as octopus with garlic and merken seasoning served over mashed baby potatoes. The dish was small, and people thought it was OK as they found the pieces of octopus a tad chewy. They liked the spices but were surprised that the potatoes were a bit cool. The $24 Gambas Al Ajillo, with slow-cooked prawns, white wine, EVOO, garlic, and mermen, was alright. There was a handful of shrimp, and they were decently cooked, but the "ajillo," or rather, the garlic, was very light. Therefore, I found it a bit bland, which is almost never the case for this dish. I wouldn't recommend this based on price and flavor. Last and least of the tapas was the $22 Tortilla De Patatas, listed simply as a Spanish omelette. There was an option to add chorizo for $2 more, which we did. Along with the omelette, this also arrived with a few sauces and some pieces of crunchy bread, which were the highlight, as the omelette wasn't good either. The texture of the omelette was very different than any other Spanish omelette I've ever had. It was quite soft with a bit of chew, with a mild chorizo flavor. Along with the greenish color, it wasn't exactly appetizing. I wouldn't recommend this at all, but thankfully, that was the last tapas we ordered. My favorite of the main dishes was the Solomillo & Pebre for $28, listed as skirt steak topped with parsley and olive oil, with hand-cut fried potato and salad. While not the most tender, as it is a skirt steak, it was still well-flavored with the topping almost reminding me, to an extent, of a less oily version of chimichurri. The potatoes had a unique texture, being slightly crispy on the outside while remaining slightly soft in the middle. The salad on the side, which also arrived with one of our other mains, was a tasty mix and certainly more effort than a typical salad you find in many of these places. We also liked the $32 Costillas De Cerdito, with pork ribs in beer, mustard, and rosemary with hand-cut fried potato and salad. The pork ribs were flavorful, though I did find a bit of it to be a bit fatty, but some of that is expected with pork ribs. The mildly sweet and slightly rich sauce paired with the pork ribs. The same comments from before can be made about the potatoes and salad. Last was the OK Paella De Mariscos for $38, listed as rice cooked with shrimp, mussels, clams, prawns, and fresh saffron. The portion size was good, with a lot of mussels and clams in particular, and a handful of shrimp. Of the bite I had of the two large prawns, they were plump and juicy as well. However, the rice was both a bit bland and a tad mushy and felt a bit overcooked compared to many other paellas. There was some socarrat on the bottom as per usual, which was the best part. It's a bit difficult to rate this place. The spices, textures, and flavors were lacking from the overpriced tapas, and I honestly wouldn't recommend any of them. For the main dishes, they were tasty, but you can get a better-cooked skirt steak at many other places for a similar price. The ribs were decent, and the paella was just OK. If we only had the tapas, I probably would be giving this place a 1, but for the whole meal, an upper 2, rounded up.

The Brussel sprouts were crispy with a tangy dressing topped with dried cranberries and raisins. This dish had a nice balance. There were two-three fairly larger hunkers which we had to cut up but otherwise flavor was nice. Next came the top sirloin cooked to medium with a bed of roasted carrot purée and a salsa sauce. The sirloin was seasoned nicely and cooked to perfection- very tender! By far my favorite dish! The calamari was a bit of a disappointment. It was fried too crispy and lost the calamari taste.
